Wanted to pop in and say hi! Somehow ur channel/this reaction popped up in my thumbnails (probably cuz it was a Pearl Jam reaction! lol!!) Loved the reaction and your sincerity. FAR too many out there are faking it!! UGH!! Anywhoo, I have been following music reaction channels for quite a while (a couple years). 3 channels/people specifically. are my go-to's because they keep it real af and you definitely seem to fit that bill!! It's much appreciated, and I subbed for that reason!! If u don't mind, I'd love to give u a few nuggets of info on PJ and this performance/the entire PJ Unplugged performance episode....
1.) Eddie's voice was straining in parts due to being very sick with a BAD head and chest cold that night. So yes, his voice was strained in parts, but sick as he was.... he still KILLED the entire show!! In vids of other songs from this same night, you can see the cold sweat glistening on his forehead due to his fever! Poor guy! lol
2.) You said that u noticed Eddie's singing isn't "practiced" it seems to flow naturally.... that's cuz fame and fortune was never his motivation or his goal. He sings from his soul and music is his release. (he's said that himself) He just needed an outlet to express himself and writing and singing was
3.) He never had voice lessons or anything like that. So today, 30yrs after this performance, if u check out current live performances.... you will notice how he has to change the placement of his facial muscles/jaw etc to compensate for some of the damage he's done to his vocal cords through the years. Don't get me wrong, he still sings beautifully and with passion (and I love him and PJ dearly!!). But it's evident that he's altering/compensating or rather.... that he now has to actually "work" at his singing. And I'm saying all that as just an observer with no actual singing experience! lol!! It's simply noticeable visually but.... NOT audibly!!
Important to note: Eddie and the guys of Pearl Jam always write with a purpose and this song is a PRIME example. It was inspired by the horrifying real life suicide of 15y/o Jeremey Wade Dell of Richarson, Texas in front of his teacher and 30 of his classmates in 1991. The song is NOT about Jeremy, just inspired by the event and was written by Eddie Vedder in an effort to raise awareness for the need for better teen suicide awareness/prevention programs. Their goal is to help others while also expressing their thoughts and feelings on life's issues and at times, current events. They consider their gifts to be of importance, consider their platform a great responsibility and try to use it to help people. You can look back through their entire 30+ yr catalogue and you will not find one song about partying, wealth, fame, T&A or anything even remotely like that. Don't get me wrong, I was a teenager in the late 80's so I love me some "Pour Some Sugar On Me" by Def Leppard (and all the other smut-themed anthems of the 80's! lol!!) BUT.... PJ is just special. Keep going with them AND consider checking out the other 3 of the 4 "Greats" of Grunge. It was a short-lived era, in part due to Kurt Cobain's suicide. In case u don't know who the 4 "greats" were I'll list them for you along with one of their biggest hits to help u on your journey. The 4 "greats" (in NO specific order) were....
1.) NIRVANA - breakout hit: "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
2.) PEARL JAM - breakout hit "Alive" although "EVEN FLOW" should be ur next PJ reaction! (official video)
3.) SOUNDGARDEN breakout hit: "Black Hole Sun".... lead singer is the late great Chris Cornell who is known as "the Voice" of that time period and was deemed that by none other than Steven Tyler (lead singer of Aerosmith), Ozzy Osbourne and James Hetfield (lead singer of Metallica)
4.) ALICE IN CHAINS - breakout hit "ROOSTER".... fun fact, their name is a play on Alice In Wonderland.
Sorry for the long azz comment. Just wanted to share the information that I know to maybe help you on this journey. Look forward to seeing the channel grow!! Peace and light....

This is so great Tina! Thank you so much for the kind compliment of my authenticity! I try to make these videos from the stance of a MUSIC LOVER who just happens to have vocal training and insight! I did not know a lot of these facts that you listed about Eddie and PJ, thank you for these! I sure appreciate them and I know my audience will as well. I look forward to see you chime in on future posts!

Vedder is a true talent, even now the guy sounds better than 99% of anyone out here. What happened to the drummer supposedly is that he didnt get along with the bandmates and they basically ousted him. Who knows what they didnt get along about, but the fact is he was part of the rise of Pearl Jam so he is a damn legend himself!

@@michaelwatson266 I dont really give one damn if he was or not, all I am going by is his skill on drums.
If he was some kind of addict thats his damn problem, all I know is the music I heard and the drums I heard. My comment was based off an interview and it came straight from Vedder's mouth.

@jensz9360 I meant that's what they fought about and that's why he was kicked out of the band.

@@michaelwatson266 I didnt hear Vedder say any of that. Where did you hear that from? Sounds more like a RHCP issue.

The drummer was (is) Dave Abbruzzese, and he's widely regarded as the best drummer to have played with the band. Unfortunately, the rest of the band didn't get on with Dave's personality, particularly Eddie and Jeff Ament.

Wow, that's great insight! I loved his drumming for this pearl jam era, although personality is a big factor in a band!

In an interview he confirmed he had a cold on that day. He wasn’t trying to excuse anything, but he said it freely.

  • @michaelwatson266

Eddie had a bad chest cold that night and didn't know if he could even perform. Could be where the strain is coming from 🤔

  • @L.R.KNIGHT
    @L.R.KNIGHT 2 года назад

Also, I think Eddie's strain at the end is intended at the end. It's meant to come from an extremely dark, emotional, raw, painful, chaotic, desperate, deranged and horribly tragic moment in time
That needs to be felt, and nobody can pull that off any better than he did.

  • @L.R.KNIGHT

That drummer is Dave abbruzzese. He's amazing. A top notch player. As Brian Forrester said, Dave was , by far, their best. But he'd be anybody's best. The smoothest I've ever seen, heard, and modeled some of my style after.
Matt Cameron has been their drummer since 1999s Yield, I think. He is also Soundgarden's drummer, and worked with Eddie , like with temple of the dog (hunger strike is their hit single), and at shows and all... Matt is a great drummer.. but he's really choppy. He's so stiff, it feels sloppy, even though he's tight.
There are rumors, like Dave was the heroin catalyst for the band, or, was a harder abuser than even Mike mccready, the lead guitarist.. who was deep into heroin abuse.
    Whatever the reason, they clashed.
Personally, I can believe degrees of those rumors, and I can also believe he was the one who left. I lean more towards the latter. I think he left and got out of dodge. He seems to be healthy and happy now

The vocal strain as you call it wasn’t a little deal either. I don’t know very many singers that can belt out those kinda vocals I can’t recall one at all to this very day. No one can play that song as good as him. I’ve noticed over the years and as of recent that non famous singers can actually sound much better then the original singer did.No one can play this song better then Eddy that’s a fact 💯 vocal strain or no vocal strain. Eddy played from his whole heart playin unplugged. Personally it’s my favorite recording live and by far the best performance ever, why because it’s raw and real and also had millions of people watching it live on MTV which I myself watched this performance live when it was aired originally. To me this live performance is by far better then the recording that was made in the studio. You also mention he had better vocals in the past but those were not unplugged performances you can’t even put those ones in the same category technically.

    • @simplysinging5115

From what I understand, it had to do with a story that Eddie read about a boy who killed himself infront of his classmates. Thanks for joining the conversation!
