  • Today in the second installment of my affordable dream car series, I am looking at the Ford Mustang GT. An American icon, the Mustang was finally launched in RHD for the UK market a few years ago - to coincide with the release of the sixth generation car. A big upgrade for the Mustang as a whole, just how is this car in my first drive of the V8 on UK roads?

    This is the best "real world" review of the mustang on the internet so well done. It's interesting to read that when Ford Australia initially pitched for the Mustang they were given an allocation of 1000 units by Ford HQ which was over what Ford Australia thought they could sell. Some execs were worried that they would only shift 500 or so units in the whole model life. 5 years later they have passed 26,000 units. I had my first drive of a mustang a few weeks ago and was seriously impressed. It's not an M3/M4, it's a different beast and pitched perfectly at the market segment it's aimed for. Its fast enough, sounds great, looks great. It's special enough for the average bloke (and increasingly females ) to feel a real sense of achievement and pride in owning one without breaking the bank. It can be modded by people with OCMS (obsessive compulsive modification syndrome) or left bone stock. Either way it performs it's intended function of bringing a smile to the owners face. That's the whole point of owning a car like that.........innit.

    I just bought a new RHD Mustang in the UK. Unlike many main dealers, Ford's will happily add various after-market modifications so I opted for front parking sensors, sports clutch spring, short gear shift and x-pipe resonator delete all of which I think were sensibly priced. The car is now returning for ARH long-tube high flow headers (that will amplify exhaust sound and power). This is a fun car drive and if you have children, at least two of them will comfortably sit in the rear so it is an immensely practical car to drive.

Most older multi stories are a problem. They were built for Austin 1100s , 105e Anglias and original Minis. It's also a bit of a pain trying to overtake tractors on country roads, and I wouldnt want to have it if I lived in a big city where parking is constantly tight.

    I lived in the States for a couple of years and placed an order for one before they came out, didn’t even drive one, read a great review and it said all you need options wise is the Performamce pack and that’s what I did. Not sure what that would equate too in the UK but it was summer tyres, stiffer anti roll bars and the 6 pot brembo’s up front and optioned the cracking recaro bucket seats.
    Owned for 20 month, 20K miles, 5 track days, the car was faultless and so full of character, I loved it.
    To an English bloke in the USA you need to do the V8 thing and so glad I did, if we had stayed over there a Corvette would have been next on my list. After moving back to the UK bought a 996 c2 which I love, more nibble than the Stang but miss that rumble and soundtrack of the V8, I love to see them on the road in the UK but have not chatted to any owners as yet.
    Great review of a car that oozes character and contrary to belief I think handles well, only downside in the UK to ownership is the Petrol prices.
    Keep up the great reviews on a superb channel.

    The great thing about the Mustang is that it's a very fun car that is relatively affordable. You are mostly correct that in The States seeing a Mustang isn't a special occasion. In the USA what makes a Mustang special, and gets attention, are the higher performance editions & years they were produced. The new coyote equipped mustang is impressive no matter where you see it.

    Well done and well said and perfect car to start the Affordable Dream Car series! The spec on this Mustang is spot on! What a beautiful car! For me, the Mustang does not become relevant to own until Mustang GT with a manual transmission all the way up to the less affordable Shelby Mustang GT 350. The Shelby Mustang GT 500 is an AMAZING example of what a Mustang can be but it does not come in a manual and it is even less affordable than the GT 350. I would have LOVED to have that V8 growl and crackle every morning but right now, as a family man, I needed car with room for my family and the back seats in the Mustang are just not usable and even here in the US with my "2 car garage" there is no way I could fit a Mustang and another car in my garage :( For me this affordable dream car would mean I would need another house to put it in because there is no way I would park it on the street. Wonderful review, to me here in the States I have always thought of the Mustang as the poor man’s Aston Martin, not quite as pretty, not quite as fast and certainly no where near the price. Old MG’s and Triumphs had kit car interiors, felt as though at any moment the entire dash would fall off into your lap, but these beautiful lil Britts were about one thing, having fun! Even today when you see a MG or my favorite the MGB, the driver has a big smile on their face and that’s what Mustang is all about, I Love my giant F150 with all my heart, but I never smile when I see a Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, but when I see an old MG, Triumph, Beetle or any Mustang I smile, because I know the person behind the wheel is smiling. No car will ever approach the beauty of the old Jag E Type, to me it was just simply the most gorgeous thing ever to come out of a mind, inspired by God himself, but the Mustang is a very pretty car, that will hike up her skirt and run through a meadow with a smile on her face!👍

I paid about $2600 for it out the door, and loved it for a couple yrs. before I had to move to an uncertain job 2000 miles away and decided to give it to my Mom and just keep my motorcycle for my new life in CA. I wish I had it now, cause it would be worth about the same $ as the one you were driving here. I've had the pleasure to drive a friends ecoboost 2.3 with Mountune upgrades and must say "that" is the version I'd buy if I were buying a newer one. The feel of the more balanced weight dist. with the same power as the V8, makes it feel much more nimble, not to mention the fuel economy. It's not as important to me these days to make lots of noise, even on my MC.

    Anyone who owns the current Mustang owes it to themselves to get Koni's Special Active dampers.
    I test drove two Mustangs back to back with and without the Koni dampers and the difference was huge. It completely transformed the ride and handling of the car.
    The standard car had a very harsh ride especially the rear, and like Jay has said, also a bit floaty as you push on. Meanwhile with the Koni's the harshness was completely eliminated, but itstead of it now being soft like you would expect, it actually maintained a reassuring firmness (as opposed to being jarringly stiff like the original) and had much improved body control.
    There was some turn in understeer I experienced on the standard car. That was fixed with the Koni's.
    I also felt like I could flow with the car through the bends and down the road as I had more of a feel for the car and a trust in what it was doing at any given moment.
    With the harshness gone you really gain a confidence in driving the car as it doesn't get upset over bumps anymore and the feedback from the road is much purer.
    So yes the Koni's make the Mustang more comfortable and gives it more body control, but the key takeaway here is the confidence it gives you in the car. If you enjoy driving these cars like they should be driven, that is the one thing that will make you enjoy it the most as you can fully use the car without being scared of it.
    Usually with suspension upgrades you expect some compromises, but with these dampers it improves every single aspect of the ride for every different type of road that I drove it on.
    It turned the car from something I couldn't wait to get out of, into a car that I wanted to take home.

      Really? I would argue that you’ll see more flashy cars in Yorkshire than other parts of the uk. Really depends what part though. North and West Yorkshire have some of the best cars I’ve seen in the country. I believe 2 of the only rhd trackhawks in the uk are in West Yorkshire. Seen a few challenger hellcats up here too and a jeep set
      North Yorkshire is an entirely different animal. Go to Harrogate or York and you’ll spot at least 5 supercars in a day easy. Seen a Porsche 911 carrera 4s and 3 lambo urus in the past 2 days
      Loads of rolls Royce up here too and plenty and I mean PLENTY of mustangs especially in Harrogate they love em over there.

    Here in the States, I see a lot of base-spec V6 solid rear-axel Mustangs. They seem to be daily drivers for people. But mostly, you see the GTs. The solid axel version are more common. But the 2015 refit with 4 wheel independent suspension are very popular.
    Saw a young man sporting the 2.3 badge on his Mustang. And he was with a group of young men showing off their Japanese tuner cars, in a parking lot. So, even though it's a bigger car, the handling and the turbo motor seems to appeal to the drift crowd.
    For a guy my age, 53, I'm really attracted to the GT Premium Convertible, with the 10 speed auto and the 3.73 Torsen rear end. I live in Texas, and the call of the Western highways seems to beg for a V8 rumbling through the canyons. No need to go nuts and race through them. Just cruise with that 10 speed auto. Should be epic with the top down.
    But, I honestly feel I'd enjoy a Lexus RC F with a sunroof even more. It's a much more refined and nimble car. But, if I decide on a ragtop, Mustang is the way to go.

    It's nice that it comes in right hand drive, but I really prefer the dodge challenger. Sometimes a worse car is just better 😎

    Two Mustang drivers I have known, both bought not for speed or take off times but for the history and the total romance of these cars.
    This was a great and honest review by Jay Emm and if I was looking for another car of ANY sort it's one of these babies for the sheer joy of it. Love this, super review.

    🐎💨The 1984-1986 SVO is my favorite Mustang of all time. It wasn’t until 2005 (fifth generation) that I would take notice again of the Mustang. When the sixth generation Mustang was revealed for 2015, I knew I had to finally buy one.

    I rented a soft top mustang in L.A. in '17, 3ltr v6, pretty slow, crap on bends but 34mpg and very comfortable.

      Greg RSVR I did the same every time I went to the states as a mustang was my dream car and they kept giving me the v6 as was absolutely crap and I would never buy 1 , then last year when I went to Florida then gave me the V8 And man what a difference 😂 the v6 is not even in the same ball park not even in the same league , and the V8 blew me away it blew me away that much , I now own 1 😁👌🏼 give the V8 a go

      With the GT it’s not just the engine that gets upgraded. The suspension, brakes, tires, exhaust, wheels also get upgraded. Ford is now providing upgrades to the ecoboost models as well (exhaust, suspension, brakes etc). There is a ecoboost HPP that has like 330hp and other speed goodies. The V6 option has been dropped since 2018 models came out.

    As an American I've grown up with Fords My dad had a 67 fast back when I was four I currently have an 06 Roush charged 4.6 liter have never put a penny in it other then normal service. My car here in Idaho turns heads ever place I go and I always get the thumbs up. I paid 18k in 2011 it had 13 thousand miles on it. To this day it looks like new.

    It’s fine on the roads it’s the car parks, particularly multi level ones, that are the issue.

    Jay, don't sleep on the 2.3L EcoBoost Mustang, I think you need to find one and review it💡 Slightly detuned Focus RS engine is no slouch in the Stang 👍

    • @stevencrowley110
      @stevencrowley110 4 года назад +2

      Klasse Act those motors are awful in terms of reliability, ecoboost / focus RS owners here in the states complain like crazy and have experienced a ton of issues. If you want a car you can really beat on, you want natural aspiration.

    • @klasseact6663
      @klasseact6663 4 года назад +1

      @@stevencrowley110 yeah, I live here too was and the RS had its issues with the wrong head gaskets used but haven't heard alot of issues other than that but surely there's more. As far as needing a NA for beating on, well, the VooDoo engine has been a disaster, much more than the Ecoboosts.

    • @Silverhks
      @Silverhks 4 года назад +1

      Seriously, don't underestimate the Ecoboost. Yes it's down on power, and doesn't make those lovely rumbles, but the weight balance difference makes it's a much different car. I would even say I prefer it in the twisties or autocross. Once you get to a track the power of the v8 is hard to beat though

      Its detuned for this the far bigger heavier car why? Economy maybe? Whats the kerb weight of these out of curiosity.

      Klasse Act good point but the voodoo engine was very experimental and most people don’t have gt350s anyway. the 5.0 on the other hand is fairly reliable. I don’t talk down on the 6 cylinder ecboosts, those are great motors but they’re unfortunately not available in the stangs . The 4 cylinder eco boost on the other hand seems to be a ticking time bomb
