Which on the one hand amazing, but on the other makes them kind of forgettable. I can remember every damn riff on Rush’s “Hemispheres” for instance. Even on the 10+ minute tracks. The difference is songwriting capability. I listen to Mastadon and dig the riffage, but after a while begin to be lost in a wall of sound which rarely coheres. And not in a Deafheaven or My Bloody Valentine type of way where that makes sense. With Mastadon I am desperately looking for that Randy Rhodes melodic riff to stand out, but it never does. Having said that, I like Crack the Sky and OMATS.

Fair enough, I wasn't too keen on Show Yourself at first but it's a grower - still, it's nothing like the level of Blood Mountain or Crack the Skye though
I think the whole point of The Motherload was to be so poppy as to almost be provocative. The music video reflects this, it's like an amalgamation of a bunch f metal and pop clichés.
Himmelslaub blood mountain is their best IMO. Crystal skull has one of the heaviest riffs of all time. Circle of Cysquatch, colony of Birchmen, Hubters of the Sky, Pendelous Skin, Wolf is loose... amazing shit
Blood Mountain was a change from their Remission and Leviathan sound. Just like every album after Blood Mountain has been too. When a band changes their sound drastically enough, it can become very dividing. That's why some fans who knew Mastodon for those earlier albums would see Blood Mountain as a bit strange. I also think it's their dryest sounding album. That doesn't mean it's boring, I'm just saying that I feel oddly dehydrated whenever I think about songs from that album. Don't know why.
7/10??? Motherload the worst track??? You tripping lately man. You need to give these albums more listens before the reviews. I wasn't all that high on the Hunter, but this album seemed to perfect their catchyish stuff with more progressive stuff after I gave it a lot of listens. Shit like a 9/10 for me.
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man. Light 6 from me. I found the entire second half pretty boring and by about the 8th song I just wanted the album to end. The chanting at the end of Aunt Lisa is the first thing in a Mastodon song that's made me physically cringe.
You do know he gets albums weeks in advance before they come out right? And that he spends multiple times listening to them in a short space of time right? So he's probably listened to this things at least a dozen times before he made this review right?
The motherload is prob one of my favourite songs on this album, I seriously don't understand how you could compare it to nu-metal...that is just such an insult
It's sick that this band can't even dissapoint and instead, sounds fresh at each new album, for the most part. One of the best bands of the early millenium.
Fuckin' love it. Comes right out of left field and adds a level of fun to an already awesome track. I think the whole album is solid and the band make no bones about who their influences are. I implore everyone to search RUclips for the 'Making of Once more 'round the sun', as well as 'Crack the Skye track-by-track' and watch how these guys interact with each other. They're switched on music lovers that have managed to capture something very technical, interesting and accessible without losing integrity. Haters gonna hate...all the fuckin' time.
Exactly! It adds a level of fun to the song and album. It wasn't meant to be taken seriously. These guys have no shame about what they do and that's why I love them
@@palbo4 "These guys have no shame about what they do" This IS the band that released a music video for Steambreather later that has a dude using a giant fucking magic nose to inhale people who discover their evil occult rituals. And the music video for High Road is a bunch of LARPers. I guess I never stepped back and thought about it but uh, yeah you're absolutely right they are fuckin dorks. And I LOVE THEM for it.
When I first got into Mastodon what I really loved was how their albums revolved around a unifying idea that drew tracks together and created a sound that carried from beginning to end. Songs were part of a greater whole and added up to even more than the sum of their parts in a way that very few bands are capable of doing. The last couple of albums haven't done that and if anything seem to have become slapdash in their design. I appreciate that when they wrote the Hunter they didn't have the mental or physical energy to write a thematic album, and there were parts of that album that I liked but it never drew me in like past albums. I have only listened to the latest album once but there were a number of offputting elements (first amongst them being aunt lisa) that haven't encouraged me to return to it. I started listening to mastodon ten years ago, I know they've changed, and they have said that they were excited to grow, for which I commend them. I wanted to change with them but I guess our different ideas of Mastodon were too far apart. That's obviously just an individual response so I'm not saying they were wrong to make this compositional shift but for me it hasn't been rewarding.
This pretty much sums it up for me. Leviathan was such an amazing album because it was an album, not just a collection of songs. Blood Mountain was good but at the time I felt they could do better which they did with Crack the Skye, again another album. They still write amazing riffs and there moments that blow me away but I don't get that sense of escapism that Lev and CtS offered. Any band that writes an album like Leviathan will always have my respect and I will always keep an ear open for their new releases, but maybe no with the same enthusiasm I had previously.
I think the reason why this album is getting more praise than The Hunter is because that album weeded people out and everyone else still felt satisfied after Mastodon went in this new direction.
im not so sure, i think its just a much better album. the hunter felt like a halfway point. they still tried some dark, sludgy and downright weird stuff on the hunter. it felt like an album that couldn't fully decide what it wanted to be. OMRTS sounds like mastodon is more committed to their new direction and has learned to write tighter rock songs
@@gotpezz Gonna agree, as a guy who's only really into their newer stuff I have to pick out tracks in The Hunter. Like, Blasteroid is jarring coming off Curl of the Burl, the tracks feel less coherent because they are all OVER the place in tone. Not necessarily bad but it's gonna be harder to digest. Like, listen to fuckin "Creature Lives" in contrast with most of the album, even Spectrelight right after it. You're right, some of the album is their older stuff that's a bit harsher or weird, some of it's the newer poppy stuff, so it doesn't really resolve cleanly for most people. And then a bunch of them that are trying to be approachable are just weird as hell. I still love that album but, yeah it's a bit experimental in how much it varies all over the place. That CAN be good, lots of variation can be fun. It's just harder to do well and is always going to put more people off. Meanwhile, this album? I don't know how to talk about music properly but, I hear the coherent musical theme throughout the album that The Hunter *aggressively* does not have. Once More Round the Sun is a smooth ride through the countryside. The Hunter is a very odd sightseeing trip through Yellowstone, that suddenly becomes Nevada, and then Vegas, and suddenly we're chilling in fuckin Germany or something. Yeah it's all a road trip but *what is happening?*
Yeah like I feel the opposite of everything he feels haha! He says the album doesn’t open strong with the first three songs, and I goddamn LOVE those songs!!!
I couldn't disagree more. To me, the only real weak point of the album is the title track. Everything else just rocks so hard. I can't stop listening to it. Good review though.
I actually loved The Motherload. That was the first Mastodon song I ever heard, and I especially love the guitar solo just because it feels shrill and sharp but not too harsh. I do agree with a lot of the review, you make good points Bananthony Mango.
sorry man. Motherload was one of the best. I cannot trust in someone that disliked Tread Lightly; and Ember City is the best of the album. As Brann said a THOUSAND times, they do what they do for themselves. You should do music because you like it, not to record another Remission or Leviathan every 2 years.
+striderscanner The problems with any review is that music is highly subjective to the listener like any art. Movies are the same way, although outright terrible versions of any art is universally panned. I enjoyed the song as well and think it's a very good moment on a great album. I've always wondered why critics and reviews of different media is even a thing. He doesn't like it, but say 10 people do.... so what is his value other than an opinion? cheers-
I've watched almost every one of his reviews but at 2:38 he said motherload is the worst song on the album and it was the first time he ever pissed me off, I know everyone has a right to their opinion but you're really a casual Mastodon fan I you don't like this song. It has all the elements that make great Mastodon songs especially a nice tight disciplined solo.
That's what makes his review better than yours, he isn't an avid Mastodon fan, so he can critique their music without the shroud of bias that you have. You like The Motherload because you think it's Mastodon's sound; it's good to you simply because it sounds like what you like in Mastodon. Anthony, however, judges the music solely on whether it's good or not and not based on how (insert band here)-like it sounds.
I'm actually really confused when people tell me they don't like The Hunter or Once More Round The Sun. I can see some arguments with some of the weeker songs on these albums but as a whole I actually really like them. As far as the band goes, nothing will top Crack the Skye for me. That is one of my altime favorite albums. Its very prevalent that their earlier albums have been strikingly different from their latest releases but I find that to be very pleasing. I don't like when my favorite bands stay the same forever. I find that with each new album there are things to love and things to hate. With The Hunter, I personally love songs like The Sparrow, Stargasm, All The Heavy Lifting, Creature Lives, and Curl of the Burl. These songs have incredible atmosphere and are real trips while other songs like Thickening and Drybone Valley really not tickling my fancy. With OMRTS I actually love the rhythm thrown down in Tread Lightly and I think its a strong opening. The chanting in Aunt Lisa is a little annoying but the riff behind it is awesome. Chimes at Midnight I liken to The Sparrow from The Hunter because if the trippy, floating atmosphere it gives off and I love it. High Road I feel has one of their most weighty riffs just calling for the head bang whilst gritting tour teeth. I could do without its the chorus however, it feels a lot lighter than the rest of the song, not that that's bad. Overall I think they are great releases that show the band is stretching their legs a bit, wearing their influences on their sleeve while still remaining heavy. I love Mastodon and everything they have put out and eagerly await more music from their camp.
Behold, I am an all powerful lich for I will necropost the 6 year dead! 'Cause I have to express my appreciation for your choice in avatar. Your avatar and mine are the two album arts in competition for my favorite of all time. (Once More 'Round the Sun for yours, The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull by Earth for me, in case one of us changes em later). I have no idea what the hell it is but if I ever got a tattoo and had way too much money, that green, demonic nature spirit thing is what I would get. I want a high quality print of it from whatever the original is, I'd frame it on my damn wall. It does look a bit weird when you fully open the album liner and see it transition between the square pages to the other demon, but I still dig it. The transitions are the only issue with that, each of the 4 frames look amazing. Uhhh, album. Motherload is amazing, I have a picture disk vinyl of it where the B side is an instrumental version of Halloween. I'm kind of basic in my ability to describe what makes music good to me but, one of my metrics is asking myself if I just like a few tracks, or if I can enjoy the album front to back without skipping tracks. I skip around sometimes only because I've listened to this album so many times and, Feast Your Eyes is probably the track that bores me the most? Kinda repetitive, but it works alright in the whole composition. I can't describe what it is but this album gives me happier memories than a lot of music I listen to, it's this weirdly upbeat and fun metal album for me. When I hear that acoustic intro in Tread Lightly, or the upbeat drums in Motherload, it just makes me smile. I listened to stuff like Boards of Canada to enjoy that melancholic calm with a bit of happiness, same with a lot of ambient. Few other emotions that'd take a bit to get into, often negative, angry, kinda depressed stuff. But Once More 'Round the Sun has none of that for me. It's weirdly relaxing. Also what I REALLY don't know how to explain is, none of Mastadon's other songs or albums have the same vibe, they're good at keeping that kind of thing distinct. Ramble ramble Mastadon is amazing, and I probably make old fans angry because I'm firmly a fan of their newer stuff and struggle to get into the older stuff. The Hunter, Once More 'Round the Sun, and Emperor of Sand all the way. I have to pick songs out of The Hunter to enjoy, but this album? Whole thing, kickass. There's a reason every new years if I comment on it on social media I'll quote the title track and album name in general. It's just entered my vocabulary, along with "Curl of the Burl" though that one's hard to say without feeling like a dork.
I still remember the day, many years ago, when I heard the opening guitar sequence of "Aqua Dementia" from Leviathan. My mouth hung open for about two days. It's just not the same, but I still like their music. Even parts of The Hunter.
This record is a lot more fun if you just take it as it's own thing and don't compare it to Mastodon's other stuff to judge 'heavy-ness'. Just put it on and enjoy.
I'm agreeing with almost everything said here. Really liking the CD and great review. Best songs so far for me are Asleep in the Deep, Aunt Lisa (minus the cringe-ending), and Feast Your Eyes. Blood Mountain is my favorite CD by them, but this is a very consistently enjoyable record. Its getting pretty tiring to hear from all the Leviathan fans stuck in the past, but basic music fans (Songs for the Deaf worshipers as well) will always be there when bands evolve their sound. Strong 7 for me
At a certain point my brain shut off with music and I learned to appreciate The Hunter and Once more Round the Sun. I was almost offended at The Hunter given the big departure from the masterwork of something like Crack the Skye. Almost everyone can agree that Crack the Skye is just on it's own level. But The Hunter was them stepping back and trying something else, and Once more Round the Sun is a compromise where they have a bit more interest in being Mastodon but still catchy as hell. The thing is I feel like The Hunter was a good break for them in retrospect. I hope their catchy direction gradually works back towards Crack the Skye territory and then they release another concept album that is mind-blowing and the best of their career. The Hunter implied that their best was behind them, but Once more Round the Sun implies that their best is ahead of them. If you combined the new understanding of music they have now, with the understanding that they had during the classic era of Remission to Crack the Skye, and create a new album out of that, it'll be the best Mastodon album ever. It's just a shame that Crack the Skye already dealt with the biggest tragedy of the band, because now the personality is a bit more distant. They need to find touch with the things that really pain them as people and musicians and tap into it on an album that blows minds and combines the best elements of their early sound and their current sound.
I'm not really feeling this one, though I like it better than the Hunter. Diamond In The Witch House is a kickass track! Still, it seems like Remission will always remain my favorite Mastodon album!
Well, you said that The Haunter was the beginning of Mastodon going into more straightforward music. I'd say it was Crack The Skye with really a lot of calm music, more molody, and - of course - less rape commited on the ears of people listening to it. Sure, The Haunter had shorter songs, more catchy riffs, but all in all Crack The Skye was a prophecy of where Mastodon is heading. I like Once More 'Round The Sun. The two singles were great and I'm still singing along the High Road's chorus. Ember City and The Motherload also have massive, engaging choruses. The ending song gives me the feel of Leviathan mixed with Blood Mountain with this really brutal thing going on, heavy shit and all. All in all, I'd give it an 8 but I see your argumentation for 7 you gave. And also, it was the first time I saw your channel, movie, you and I really liked and enjoyed it. Do you do reviews of The Black Keys or Jack White and this kind of music?
I was actually going to say the same, Crack the Skye was really where I felt like Mastodon's music started to take a pretty major turn. I'm on the opposite side of the fence, I haven't really been that hot on Mastodon since they decided they wanted to explore a lighter side of their music. Everything that got me excited for them the first time I heard Remission is more or less gone these days and the band, as many times as I've seen them, rarely spends any time on their material from Blood Mountain and before live. I don't think their music is bad at all, but I think it's fundamentally less interesting because they went from another vein of sludge metal that was around the time blossoming into something new and exciting, and wound up embracing a more melodic sound, something that's plentiful in the post-Neurosis world of sludge metal. Some of their earlier tunes like March of the Fire Ants and Circle of Cysquatch were an interesting mix of influences with Mastodon's unique brand of technical and progressive sludge metal, Once More 'Round the Sun sounds like a band almost entirely removed were it not for their iconic vocals.
You're not alone. I always felt that Mastodon just sounded like mud. Just dirty, and icky and... yes, middle-of-the-road. Nothing special, in my opinion.
I have fallen in love with this album as of late. It really took a few listens to get in to but man, it's great. Favorite tracks are Asleep in the Deep, Chimes at Midnight and Diamond in the Witch House (kind of reminiscent of Blood Mountain and so very dark and unsettling towards the end.) I also really like the Motherload's chorus. About the chants at the end of Aunt Lisa. . . eh, it's very silly, but the instrumentals behind the goofy vocals are fantastic.
Great review man! I disagree with a lot of the intro material but that's what makes your reviews so fun. This album is a great follow up to the Hunter. More progy. Love it!
I always feel like critics misrepresent the Mastodon narrative. While Remission, Leviathan and the rando LPs compiled into Call are nice, critics have been firing the "Mastodon is too accessible now" cannons since Blood Mountain dropped. Metal at large, is stifled by the need for excessive subgenres, and departure from anything deemed "accessible" (or, honestly, anything less pretentious.) Anthony's opinions are just opinions, but I have a feeling he's too invested in Pitchfork and it's ilk to really give the last 4 Mastodon records any sort of listens with fresh ears- since they aren't called Leviathan II.
If they do I won't be sad but I won't be happy either. I love new Mastodon and old Mastodon. I don't get why people don't like it but I like such a wide variety of metal and rock that I can't dislike them.
I think Once More 'Round the Sun is their best effort yet in what THEY want to accomplish with their music. Although they are obviously looking to be more accessible with certain tracks, they still maintain their drive and direction; they are always seeking to prove they are capable of delivering some of the best progressive, heavy and melodic music WITH impressive vocals. They are continually improving on these abilities in the studio and in the live setting (with some hiccups here and there). Brann's vocals have developed into some of the more impressive factes to their overall sound and, again with everything else they do, keeps improving over time. Brent made a comment in an interview about Crack the Skye as having a creepy 70's rock feel to it and I think they've expanded on that idea and amplified it on this album, so much that it seems more like the sequel to CTS rather than The Hunter. They way I see it, Mastodon is like a fine singlemalt scotch whisky...the more they age, the better they get.
The fact that they're called a Sludge Metal band confused me when I first ran across them, because this album was my introduction. Honestly? I think it's making less and less sense to say a band has a genre. It was always a bit shaky, and it can be more accurate depending on the genre. Also depends how broadly you're speaking. Death Metal? Tons of subgenres. Sludge Metal? That's a lot more specific. Then there's the genres that are really adjacent to each other in a lot of cases, like Drone and Stoner Metal. Lots of interplay between those, then Stoner metal steps close to or into Doom Metal a *lot*. Some people see all this and say genres are pointless but, idk. It's fun to talk about and useful for finding similar stuff. Lot easier to look up "Stoner Metal Albums" than it is to look up, "Music that sounds like Electric Wizard", and you'll get more stuff out of the former search query.
What did he imply by the ''no matter what you think of blood mountain''? Whatever he meant, I still think the guitar solo on Pendulous Skin is the best solo Brent have ever produced!
The outro to Aunt Lisa is one of the highlights of the album. Completely caught me off guard and the chant strangely fits nicely into the song. That's not even mentioning the monster riff behind it. Dam that riff churns.
Alot of people bash metal when it goes for a more radio friendly sound, but i think that is a probably the best thin that can happen to radio. If the radio stations played this I'd have no problems listening to it again.
I actually liked the Coathanger's chant at the end of Aunt Lisa, but for the most part, I agree with your critique of the album. It's nowhere near the heaviness of Call of the Mastodon or Remission, and it wasn't as colorful as Crack the Skye, but the accessibility of this album means that I can introduce this album to more of my friends, and get them into the band. I'm pleased with their work.
Great review, man. I do agree on which songs you liked and which ones you didn't. I think I was really enjoying the album from the start since I actually enjoy their more catchier side (I really liked The Hunter) but once Aunt Lisa came on I was almost ready to forget the album. I was glad though, to hear better songs coming after that one. Anyways, great job as always.
I don't listen to music anymore (just anime soundtracks) but I watch all of your videos, then when I talk to people about music it sounds like I'm a big expert.
gotta say out of all the reviews i've watched i probably disagree with this one the most, lots of really stand out track on this album just gotta look past the few duds in the middle
Please review Riff Raff's new highly anticipated album, Neon Icon! I'd love to hear what you think of it! Keep up the fantastic work, your reviews are some of the best among music critics.
I had never heard Mastodon until recently, came across this album on youtube and listened to it start to finish. I loved it, have been listening to them pretty much non-stop ever since. I was surprised to find out it's considered by many to be one of their worst albums but I guess it has more to do with a love people have for their early more heavy stuff then anything about this album really being bad
this was the first Mastodon album i heard so i feel like i have a biased opinion. but i think it has some of their best vocals ever, the drum fills are godlike as usual and the overall production just seems perfect. Can't believe he thought Tread Lightly was bad intro, one of the best songs on the album come on.
I really enjoyed this album. Although what I thought was funny was how our opinions clashed and agreed at the same time - my favorite songs were The Motherload and Ember City. But anywho great review - keep 'em coming!
I havent given it too good of a listen yet (only really listened to the album in its entirety twice. Usually takes more to get a good opinion cause then i really understand the lyrics and message of each song), but it's pretty fucking fantastic. Leviathan is my favorite though it took me a while to grow on me because of the sludgy style but if i started with once more round the sun (which i didnt only because people recommended leviathan to me not this one), I think I would have liked the album as much as Crack the Skye (my second favorite so far) but not more than it. They're both very accessable and for a people who don't enjoy metal as much as I do I feel that I can recommend this album to them. Every genera of music has that album or band that opens the doors to a wider variety of artists and groups. For me it was Megadeth and their album Rust in Peace. For someone who didn't listen to as much heavy music as I did, Once More Round the Sun seems to be the album and though I hope they do something heavier again for fans like me (who are obsessed with Leviathan and Blood Mountain) Mastodon may be the band that opens the doors towards other Metal bands and subgeneras. That was just my personal thoughts on the album. Maybe someone wants them to keep going down this road and thinks this album was 10/10 their best work, maybe someone hated this album and want to burn it while blasting "The Island", but overall, I enjoyed it and thats my opinion.
review Saor - Aura, Casualties of Cool - S/T or Dead Congregation - Promulgation of the Fall, please! These are few of the best albums of the year so far (atleast for me).
The only song I personally didn't care for from this album was "Aunt Lisa". Other than that, I really enjoyed this album. In my option it's one of the best releases for the genre in 2014.
Mastodon throws more riffs and ideas into each record than some artists do in their whole careers.

much prefer The Hunter to Once More Round The Sun.
Sounds accurate
im not so sure, i think its just a much better album. the hunter felt like a halfway point. they still tried some dark, sludgy and downright weird stuff on the hunter. it felt like an album that couldn't fully decide what it wanted to be.
I legitimately adore every album they've made for different reasons.
Yeah like I feel the opposite of everything he feels haha! He says the album doesn’t open strong with the first three songs, and I goddamn LOVE those songs!!!
What's not metal about a chorus of church girls saying "let's fucking go"
sarcasm? lol
Reubyn Carter no it's dark and rock n roll as fuck
Brendan Edie Yeah I guess. I prefer the old mastodon though. Workhorse for days
"No matter what you think of Blood Mountain" What's being implied here?
I couldn't disagree more. To me, the only real weak point of the album is the title track. Everything else just rocks so hard. I can't stop listening to it. Good review though.
Lol I thought the title track was one of the best songs on it.
Hated The Hunter, loving Once More 'Round The Sun.
Thanks, dude.
Oh, and I'm glad they're using the good old A tuning again.
JackCarver10
I think the crazy variety of Mastodon's gear adds a flavor too. Like, it's not just a les paul through a marshall stack.
JackCarver10 There were a few A tuning songs on The Hunter
I actually agree with this. The Hunter bored the fuck out of me
Jonah Ellert wait, huh? they literally do play les pauls through marshal stacks. uwotm8.
the motherload the worst song? really? IMO one of the better songs on the album.
I agree with this review, however I like "The Motherload" very much.
He doesn't like it, but say 10 people do.... so what is his value other than an opinion? cheers-
Yeah, the riff is great, Brann drums are amazing, and the interlude rocks
you thought motherload was the weakest track? odd, it was the best one imo
I've watched almost every one of his reviews but at 2:38 he said motherload is the worst song on the album and it was the first time he ever pissed me off, I know everyone has a right to their opinion but you're really a casual Mastodon fan I you don't like this song. It has all the elements that make great Mastodon songs especially a nice tight disciplined solo.
motherload owns, i agree!
same
Definitely disagree lol. The lyrics to the song are pretty trash, it's basically one of the least "mastodon" mastodon songs I've heard
As an unbiased listener- the lyrics are meh, but the instrumental portion is👌. Especially the solo.
I'm okay with 7/10 but I completely disagree with The Motherload being the worst, in fact it's one of my favorites but hey that's just my opinion.
I wouldn't give any Mastodon LP less than 9/10.
I would agree with you if you scratched everything after Crack the Skye.

Cannabis Corpse - From Wisdom To Baked
ChunkiestCastle couldn't agree more!
+ChunkiestCastle I'd give this album a strong 5.
I like The Motherload and i like The Hunter album too... All their album from the 2000s are better though
daan pauwels emmm all their albums are from the 2000's
In this case i meant The Hunter and OM'RTS are from '10s
Really surprised you liked Ember City but not The Motherload. I found them to be similarly QOTSA-esque in their heavy beauty.
Going Pop? Bro... going mainstream doesn´t mean going Pop, that´s a huge different.
Do people not like Blood Mountain? I thought that was their most acclaimed album, it's amazing. Dare I say even better than Crack The Skye
Aaron Page Its my favorite
Aaron Page It took that album quite a while to grow on me, but I don't think I've ever seen someone actually dislike it.
+Aaron Page My favorite one.
+Aaron Page blood mountain is my favorite album :3
Leviathan is their most acclaimed album. Blood Mountain is brilliant though. Probably my favorite from them.
+Jack Towers i haven't checked out the whole album but the opening song is a killer. Mastodon is slowly growing on me
Behold, I am an all powerful lich for I will necropost the 6 year dead!
Upvote
on a scale of one to ten how big of an influence is Tim and Eric on your editing/comedy?
I'd give it 5 bags of popcorn.
What if 10 was the worst?
This record is a lot more fun if you just take it as it's own thing and don't compare it to Mastodon's other stuff to judge 'heavy-ness'.
Just put it on and enjoy.
Electric Wizard
When I first listened to this I liked it, but it wasn't wowing me. Now it's probably one of my top 15 albums from 2014; really grew on me.
Strong 7 for me
Every Time I Die - From Parts Unknown!
This record gets better the further you dive into it, similar to the crazy psychedelic trip depicted on the album cover.
What are your thoughts now that EoS and CDP are out?
Mastodon doesn't have a single bad album, not even a regular album, they're all very strong records and usually masterpieces.
Blood Mountain is my favorite Mastodon album *Shrug*
i liked the chant in aunt lisa, such a jarring contrast but it somehow worked, made me laugh and i dont think thats a bad thing
My eyes went straight the copy of 'Dopethrone' behind you, no offence.
I can see you becoming a producer, the way you describe music would just be so fitting when working with artists to help shape their own creations.
The needle drop reviews a wide variety of stuff, you might want to look in "rock." I don't know how people hear about so, so many bands. It's amazing.
You called it the "haunter" twice in your comment. why?
The Hunter*
I still think The Hunter is an amazing album.
I've always found Mastodon to be pretty middle-of-the-road. And Baroness. And Torche.
Just sayin'.
+1.
Mastodon was great up to and including Leviathan, but otherwise, yeah.
Baroness and Torche yes.
You're not alone. I always felt that Mastodon just sounded like mud. Just dirty, and icky and... yes, middle-of-the-road. Nothing special, in my opinion.
Oh...
I really liked early, sludgier mastodon much more but I'm glad they're still heading in a good direction and their newer music is still pretty good
I have fallen in love with this album as of late. It really took a few listens to get in to but man, it's great. Favorite tracks are Asleep in the Deep, Chimes at Midnight and Diamond in the Witch House (kind of reminiscent of Blood Mountain and so very dark and unsettling towards the end.)
I also really like the Motherload's chorus. About the chants at the end of Aunt Lisa. . . eh, it's very silly, but the instrumentals behind the goofy vocals are fantastic.
Chimes at Midnight and Asleep in the Deep are by far, my favorite songs on the record!
Alan Kramer Asleep in the Deep is just gold it's like I've even heard it before. Tread Lightly is really good as well.
Metal at large, is stifled by the need for excessive subgenres, and departure from anything deemed "accessible" (or, honestly, anything less pretentious.)
Anthony's opinions are just opinions, but I have a feeling he's too invested in Pitchfork and it's ilk to really give the last 4 Mastodon records any sort of listens with fresh ears- since they aren't called Leviathan II.
+Wynn Helm (Mr. Degradation) He gave this a positive review sheesh what more do you people want
I think Aunt Lisa is a monster track, it's like this albums "Circle Of Cysquatch"
I think Mastodon is just trying to have fun with their music instead of trying to cater to close minded people
Dear Mastodon,
Please go back to Remission style. We miss you.
Sincerely, your fan.
Love your comprehensive reviews. Do you think you'll be reviewing the new Zeds Dead record?
To me this album just showed how much of a range they have as musicians, the album wants to be in its own box away from as was said “Sludge Metal”.
REVIEW: The Haze - Deep Field
Diamond in the Witch House KILLS, great tune.
Please review the latest Burzum album - The Ways Of Yore
Will you be reviewing Linkin Park's "Hunting Party"? I would love to hear what you have to say about it.
Kyler care to elaborate on that, because bashing without argumenting is a pretty shity thing to do
He already said he's not gonna review it.
He can just review True North by Bad Religion, it's a better version of Linkin Park's tryhard 90s punk copycat sound.
I don't listen to music anymore (just anime soundtracks) but I watch all of your videos, then when I talk to people about music it sounds like I'm a big expert.
I love this album but you NAILED the thing about the Aunt Lisa chant. I hate it.
You don't really listen to Mastodon's musics throughout the years, huh?
Lol, you're a moron.
What is the record behind him with black and white horned guy at the cover?
gotta say out of all the reviews i've watched i probably disagree with this one the most, lots of really stand out track on this album just gotta look past the few duds in the middle
Are you kidding? The opening High Road riff is one of my favorite guitar riffs of all time, fucking fantastic.
Will you ever review Mastodon's older stuff??
I would argue High Road IS their most crushing riff ever.
Please review Riff Raff's new highly anticipated album, Neon Icon! I'd love to hear what you think of it! Keep up the fantastic work, your reviews are some of the best among music critics.
Nice review. Can you review the new every time i die record, that would be awesome.
Yes, From Parts Unknown needs to be reviewed
I knew someone would say this but sorry to be an ass but chimes at midnight... Not chimes at night
I'd love to see you review the Red Fang albums
yesss!
Any chance of reviewing Boris' "Noise"?
Surprised you liked this so much
Is the Maleficent Cage in the background?
I had never heard Mastodon until recently, came across this album on youtube and listened to it start to finish. I loved it, have been listening to them pretty much non-stop ever since. I was surprised to find out it's considered by many to be one of their worst albums but I guess it has more to do with a love people have for their early more heavy stuff then anything about this album really being bad
Anthony, you should probably review the last The Polish Ambassador album, it's very different from his debut albums
Needledrop , why you delete Apathy- Connecticut Casual video ? Just finished listening to the album and was looking forward to your opinion... :/
So, Anthony, are you going to review the new SEPTICFLESH anytime soon?
I thought The Motherload was great, one of those songs that sticks in your brain and you find yourself humming it. Great album!
this was the first Mastodon album i heard so i feel like i have a biased opinion. but i think it has some of their best vocals ever, the drum fills are godlike as usual and the overall production just seems perfect.
That Dopethrone LP is distracting. I want it.
Should've put Neurosis instead of Electric Wizard
review young widows' "easy pain"
review Saor - Aura, Casualties of Cool - S/T or Dead Congregation - Promulgation of the Fall, please! These are few of the best albums of the year so far (atleast for me).
The only song I personally didn't care for from this album was "Aunt Lisa". Other than that, I really enjoyed this album. In my option it's one of the best releases for the genre in 2014.
