- Classic Game Room HD reviews DONKEY KONG for ColecoVision. This Coleco game from 1982 was actually packed in with the Coleco Vision game system for a while. Nintendo's Donkey Kong is one of the most famous and well loved video games of all time. How does the ColecoVision version of Donkey Kong compare to the arcade original and the Atari 2600 and Atari 7800 versions of Donkey Kong? Solid graphics and colors make the Coleco cartridge of DK look sharp and fun to play. The game suffers from some twitchy controls and a lackluster difficulty curve. This Donkey Kong review features gameplay footage from the video game being played showing how to play Donkey Kong on the Coleco. This is an easy game to collect today and remains a classic. Nintendo's Donkey Kong and Mario have now been featured in hundreds of games on primarily Nintendo produced game systems. It's always a treat to see Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong on Atari and Colecovision. Classic Game Room HD is the retro reviewer reviewing ColecoVision video games and hardware. How does this compare to Donkey Kong on the NES and Atari 7800?

I love the simplicity of old school games like this one
I remember playing this system around '84-'85. Ah, memories.
When I was a kid I thought the flames were ducks. Many fond memories.
I love the sounds of this awesome game
This was one of the best Xmas presents ever. I was "the first kid on my lock" to have one ; ) I still have it. It still works. ColecoVision was the king of Arcade game ports. I own a bunch of them. They captured the essence and playability of the games. the SFX are classic. I can't tell you how much fun I had playing it.
Oh, man. ColecoVision was the first game console I ever had. Donkey Kong for ColecoVision was the first video game I ever played. These graphics actually looked great to me when I first played it. Ha, old school!
hey man ur vids are amazing. You cover evrything from the early years to this gen, I FRIGGIN LOVE IT. keep it up dude
I'm 17 now, but I remember this was one of the very first game systems I played. I'm thankful my dad kept his around to this very day. Such a classic, I could never get tired of Colecovision
One of my first games! Loved this as a kid.
Seeing a Colecovision in 1982 was probably as impressive as seeing the Dreamcast in 1999. Great graphics for it's time!
I remember being 9 years old and this ad coming on during the break in Happy Days. Now remember at that time no Arcade home ports looked even close to the their Arcade counterparts. It was just the norm back then. The Arcades were superior and home games were second rate quality. So then I see this ad for Donkey Kong on Coleco Vision. I couldn't believe what I was seeing! That can't be the home version! Now to me back then it looked identical to the Arcades, but today I see the flaws.
@InecomCompany
Mark, there were two different versions of the ColecoVision Donkey Kong available. The very first issues had a 24K ROM chipset, and slightly different audio and visual attributes as opposed to this 16K ROM version you used for this presentation: the 24K ROM has a maximum time bonus of 8000 points (the 16K ROM: 99000 max timer bonus), and the broken ladder glitch for the 1st board yields different results.
I remember getting Colecovision for Christmas and I was the happiest kid ever. What great memories this brings back. Ah.. the 80's.. great times, great music, and low gas prices and a strong economy. THe good ol' days...
Good review!!! I'm going to check out the 7800 version now :)
collecovision had kickass graphics for its time.
i really like those sound effects, they work well with the music.
Being this was packed with the console that I got Xmas in 1982 I played it on my Grandam's TV for hours. And I'm very good at the actual arcade game. So it comes full circle ; )
Nice review. The game fun to play for a while.
With minor differences from the arcade game when it made the big scene in the 1980s, I remember this game very well.
this was the only colecovision game I had back in the day, and it kept me busy for hours!
On several flash versions, there's a "push up" the ladder issue too.
I'm pretty sure this was a launch title for the Colecovision and came packed with the system. In 1982 this was so much better than Atari 2600 or Intellivision.
Only found this on the Spectrum 48K
Donkey Kong is truly a gamers
classic.
Yup, it came with ours! Memories! 11 years old. This was so amazing at the time. Heck I remember the tennis game with 2 bars only going up and down. How the world was going to change with technology....we heard on the news that computers were coming someday and would change everything, but it sounded too futuristic to really imagine. And here I am hanging around with my iPad, iPhone, etc, anywhere I want to be.
I remember Coleco appearing on the Simpsons. :P
I completely agree with supazns. I probably wouldn't normally watch classic game reviews, but these are just awesome. Funny ending btw. ;)
The first video I watched on this channel!
What's funny is that the best version of Donkey Kong I've ever seen is the hidden game inside Donkey Kong 64. It actually has all of the levels.
Nanofuture87 Switch now has arcade DK
I didn't know anybody else who had an Adam Coputer a while ago! You are totally right! That is the best version.
It was good at the time and its still a great game. Plus there is a secret warp only on level one to get you to the top right in front of DK.
First you go up the broken ladder, then come down and move mario one step to the left of the ladder and then jump to the right. If done properly, mario would disappear from the gameboard and then reappear up next to DK, But time it right or DK can whack you with a barrel when you appear.
Thanks for reminding me about a great game for the colecovision.
No conveyor belt level on this version? (If so, it's still an upgrade over the Atari 2600, which only had the first two levels).
The game that started it all....as in the whole Mario and Donkey Kong series and still is going today.
I love this game!
Donkey Kong looks like he's frowning. he's all like: "Oh, I know Jumpman is going to kill me so i'm just going to throw barrels and just stand here like a puts and do nothing. :( "
Donkey Kong also found it's way onto the Adam computer, but that's a story for another day. 🤣
DK 2 on the SNES is my personal favorite. Nice art direction, excellent music, great level design/gameplay, it's a solid platformer.
theme music for classic game room is awsome
Its still impressive to see a Dreamcast in 2013.
I had this when it first came out. I really liked it back then. It's pretty good for it's time, but it didn't have the cement factory level.
DONKEY KONG FOR GAMEBOY WAS THE BEST.
Very fun
The 7800 came out in 1986 and this was the very first Coleco game ever made in 1982. That could explain why the 7800 version is better. This game brings back great memories though. I remember feeling like the coolest kid in the neighborhood when I got my Colecovision way back in '82.
more classic hardware reviews!
can you use the genesis controller on the ColecoVision?
OMG I have ColecoVision and its so kool... I have frogger, mousetrap, donkeykong, pepper2 and a bunch other games
I'd say there's something missing in this version... a sixth platform in the first level!!!
This is the first game i remember playing. I could never get past the third level, but then again i was only 4 years old.
memories =)
will you make insrtutios for this game( donkey kong)?
This was the first version of Donkey Kong I ever played
This DK version was MIND BLOWING in '82.
The Atari 7800 was made a couple years later than the Coleco, so why wouldn't it have a better version of a game? It's clearly a more powerful system. And sure, we know why the 7800 DK was better... it was made in 1988!
Oh, and to answer your "whats the NES version" like issue, the 7800 version is a translation of the NES version, so it's like that with better graphics and sounds. It has all the same odd little changes and deletions. Funny, huh?
Donkey Kong on a non nintendo system? *Head explodes*
RebelTaxi this was before Nintendo ever made consoles
Of all the people see here I did not expect RebelTaxi
hey what the FUDGE are the broken ladders for lol?
Hey Mr. Mark seeing this review it really makes me strongly urge you to try out the Donkey Kong Country Games for the SNES/ Virtual Console or even the new Donkey Kong Country Returns for the WII, I believe you'll like it...
Pretty impressive for a 1982 home console, and the NES version wasn't that much better than this one.
Colecovision was a beast for its time.
looks pretty cool I only have the crappy 2600 version
Showing this in HD makes no sense.
I loved playing this game. Thx!
looks like a pretty good port
They tell you that Cranky Kong is the old DK.
Everyone here should check out the version for the gameboy. One of the best 2d plat formers released on the gameboy, and maybe of all time (i know i love it...)
I would love to see a gameboy review of this game, maybe someday :D
Your right, the NES and 7800 should have definitely had all four levels. Especially the NES since it was Nintendos own game.
2600 version better? OUTRAGEOUS! I can play this version for hours on end - It's a good cart to play for Hi Score - I can do 4 hundred thousand + on a good game. The only thing I can fault this for is missing 3rd level. I like the controling of Mario here.
Donkey Kong and Colecovision got in a legal battle early on because of Universal studios claiming that Donkey Kong is too similar to King Kong. It turned out that Universial got in trouble from this because a few years earlier they had won a court case saying that King Kong is now "free game" and they were just trying to get a few extra bucks from these (at the time) small companies.
why was the pie factory always discluded in the home versions?
memory shortage
Yes, memory limitations. ColecoVision cartridges only up to 32K ROM.
That level did exist on the Coleco Adam data pack version as that had a much larger ROM capacity of 256K.
Because it was copyrighted to Atari Home Computer port.
@1xWertzui The cut scenes were made for the GameBoy version ;)
The reason this got onto a Coleco Vision is because the NES didn't come out until 1985 and this was released in 1982.
Nes 1985? Do you mean 1983
@@Torentino_Ian_no_channel_2006 No
do you notice, that peach is on top now?
are you going to review Donkey Kong 3? please do... I'd like to see what you think of it.
@AdGarUK It's not mirrored, it's just that the first level has one less platform than the arcade version (5 instead of 6), so Donkey Kong ends up on the right hand side. I think this is due to resolution limitations of the console, in this case meaning that to get the graphics looking ok (not all squashed up) they took the platform out. This was done on a couple of other ports of Donkey Kong as well.
@LegoKing345 its a home console made in the 80's, direct competitor of atari and the intellivision
You need to find the Adam Computer version of Donkey Kong. It was the best and hardest version of all. It had the most creative levels and best gameplay with better music.
WOW! Has NO on e seen Donkey Kong for ColecoVision. I have played DK1 on the ColecoVision one hundread times
I just picked this game up for $5
With the NES version. They had it ported to the GBA too. That or if you just happen to have Animal Crossing (for the GameCube in case no one else knew that themselves), it has that in it once you get it.
Was the colecovision 8-bit?
Yes, as was the Atari 5200, 7800, the NES, Atari computers, and the C-64..
Everything before the Intellivision and Genesis was 8 bit
Why would it be surprising that a gaming console released in 1986 would outperform a gaming console released in 1982?
@@scooterahlers6719 - atari 400/800 were also 8 bit
Dunno why, but I always liked this classic version better than the one on NES and Gameboy Advance. Even though the color on the ColecoVision wasn't as bright or shiny, and the characters were a bit more pixelated... I just remember having so much fun playing the Coleco version of it... perhaps classic just never die! Q:)
idk why but i think it looks so much better with donkey kong on the right of the screen on the first stage
where i can download this on PC?
the sound is very funny, and the man play so awesome, ¡learn me"
Skill levels 2 and 3 also start you off with 3 lives instead of 5.
I can remember playing the Atari 7800 version - it was far better than the colecovision graphically. I also had it for my Commodore 64 (not the Ocean version), it was just as good.
@LegoKing345
This was somewhere after Atari and before NES.
...early-mid 80's...
Pretty good option for it's time because a lot of the arcades were becoming crowded with drama and smoking.
This Donkey Kong in this game is apparently not the same one in these games, the one in Mario Kart Wii is this ones son.
Donkey Kong is cool, but I prefer the Arcade one, which is very nice to play in person.
i love donkey kong for nes i play it on my wii (and i dont have hombrew i got it for virtual concel)
It's been a while since I played it, but I don't remember the controls being particularly bad. You just use the d-pad and a button.
Nanofuture87 no d-pad....
I reached level 8 with a score of 6600 ,the hit detection feels cheap ass, mario can fall trough platforms if they are too close to the ground and hitting fire balls & barrels with a hammer requires pixel precision, but it's still a nice conversion of it.
@daninotmyself Becuase this is Classic Game Room . . . CLASSIC Game Room. He reviews classic games along with with new ones. Besidees, this game was freaking awesome back when it came out, and it was the first game Mario as ever in.
yeah =)
but what about the original arcade game or the Game & Watch versions? Speaking of versions, i think Donkey Kong for the GameBoy is TOTALLY worth it!
the arcade version is soooo hard D:!
@phrixil True, and that reminded me that back then, Arcade games were what PC games are today. Think about it. Back then, every company was trying to match the power of the average Arcade Cabinet, and in general Arcade Boards were more technically impressive than any system on the market. Now, the PC is always one step ahead: If you have an ultimate PC it's more powerful than a PS3 or Xbox 360, neither of those could run Crysis on max settings. Newer consoles will probably try to match PC too...
why is the game mirrored?
well i do have the Game & Watch version (in a collection for DS though). My high score for Game A is 3215.
If you ask me, i think this looks better than the nes version.
i could never get to the top on the NES version =(
At the time, this was the version of Donkey Kong to have. I remember being so jealous of kids who had it. But, yes there are some things in this version that are not faithful to the arcade: such as when you can just "step down" the steps on the elevator level. You do that in the arcade, you die.
I can already tell you: Donkey Kong Jr. on the 2600 is awful....yes, even worse than the 2600 version of Donkey Kong.
Still a solid port for it's time. The 7800 is overall better but the sound is horrible.
What a wonderful thing the so called NES turned out to be... :D
Yay! Another Colecovision review. Too bad the game is a little bit of a bummer for the Colecovision. The Atari 2600 version is pretty laughable though, I own it and Donkey Kong looks totally messed up in it.
I own the 7800 version of Donkey Kong JR, but not the original.
@TheEscapedBalloon its not the arcade version and only has 3 levels before it brings you back to the main screen lol.
the flame things are called fox fires
hailrealfknmetal fire foxes
