- Classic Game Room HD reviews Donkey Kong Junior for Atari 2600 VCS! Is this the worst version of Donkey Kong JR. ever or is it the best? Donkey Kong Jr. was released in the arcades by Nintendo in 1982 and found its way onto numerous video game consoles in the following years. DK Jr. is on the Atari 2600, Atari 7800, ColecoVision and Nintendo Entertainment System just to name a few. Witness three rounds of Donkey Kong Jr. as found on this Coleco produced Atari 2600 game cartridge! I love how DK boogies when Junior is climbing.
I had this when I was a kid, had lots of fun with it
great review
Nice review man. I still need to pick up a copy of Rubber Knees Jr. some day.
lmao this comment is almost as old as i am but is still gold 😭
Donkey kong Jr. sounds like an old printer when he moves.
I always thought donkey Kong Jr. looks weird.... it looks like a hairy tall man running around. Creepy as hell.
I love the Donkey Kong sprite in this game. He's so funny looking. :3
Nice review as always. I grew up on the Colecovision version. Unfortunately DKJR looks a bit like a dingleberry in this :P... Is dingle berry one word or two? Hmm....

I spent many wasted hours on this game when it came out. Atari was the shnizit! This cartridge probably made a ton of money back in the day! Cool review!
I am surprised than CGR doesn't habe yet an Atari Jaguar, I would really love to see some reviews about that System.
what a strange looking Sasquatch
i have the atari 2600 dk jr so when u were talking about what it said i was reading along
Many quarters...good memories...
i have turbografx ultimatedeathmechawarrior. its easily the best 'psuedo 16bit' gaming destructo bot ever made.
great video btw, SasquatchKong was always a firm favourite of mine
I could not stop laughing at DK Junior's sprite
I subscribed because, clearly, it was the right thing to do.
@jimbox114 To my understanding, most of the home ports are missing the supposed "pie" level from the arcade original. The Colecovision version flips a couple levels around.
I had NO idea this game existed on the 2600
DK Jr. looks like he's using one foot to propel himself as if on a scooter when he's running.
Well, at least Donkey Jr. doesn't move as slow as a snail in this version.
I had this one! mine was the brazilian CCE version! great game!
Now all we need is that TurboGrafx16 mech and Nintendo Steam and i would be happy
Only Donkey Kong Jr. I've played was the NES version. Remember playing Donkey Kong on Atari 2600 and I actually enjoyed it in spite of its barebones simplicity... But from the looks of this game, I doubt I would have enjoyed Junior on the same system.
Nice review, though.
I can't wait for the Giant Robotic Turbografx-16 to pwn all! Heh heh.
Nary a good arcade conversion on the 2600
They reckon that Coleco made a really bad job of Donkey Kong Jr on purpose, to make their ststem seem far superior.
@Doug Thompson coleco dumbed it down on purpously to make the colecovision look even more BADASS
i wouldn't be surprised, this is really really bad. I undersetand the limitations, but man, this is atrociously bad for graphics.
Has the electrical screen? NICE B+++
Atari 2600 was introduced in 1977. At that time everything was so expensive... first importantly MEMORY... so there you have it. They could hardly design something like NES back in '77 at a reasonable price. 2600 was designed to play things like Combat with 2 players, 2 missiles ad 4 blocks onscreen :-) and I believe the company predicted the system to last till '79 or '80 not more...
The climbing sounds like a cut yell
People just should look at these home ports like they aren't ports and are original games, that's why I love Pac Man for the 2600.
I really love this game I don't care about the limitations for some reason maybe because I'm autistic but I freaking love this game
DKJr. arcade game was always very tough!!! I had this JAPAN clone machine that plays (the plastic it was made from was very very cheap 'cause it hada funky smell to it) 10000 games (actually it was 56 games in many different levels). There was a math DKJr. game on this machine that was so fun. This clone ALSO had an excellent adaptation Of the DKJr. arcade.
MECHA-Turbographx and rubber knees FTW
Oh yeah, the POWER PLAYER! I actually thought that had 10,000 games! But it didn't, it had 70 something games, a handful of them not released from the NES, and game a few games some strange configuration. Mario Bros. POW was called AFRO. That thing broke, sadly, because it was so cheap.
"That'd be like Microsoft making games for Playstation"
Well, that aged well..
Remember 2600 chipset is very limited as for how many pixels it can actually draw on the screen. Obviously you cannot even use any video buffer. All you have to do is draw the graphics on ONE scanline at a time. Even more, you have to share the time with other code. Add only 128 BYTES of RAM and you have it. 2600 Donkey Kong look very good.
Turbografx 16 Mechanized Death Machine, that's your best upcoming console yet, move over Coleco X9000!
Does that comment mean you'll be doing TG16 games in the near future?
no amount of woodgrain goodness will save the 2600 version. that's great!
I really like the sound in this game.
OR DO I?
what Champ1993 said was Atari's Slogan.
this is what you're forced to play in hell, over and over and over...
I want a Turbo Graphix 16 Death Machine!
I don't know why somebody market your comment as poor; it is true. The Intellivision DID have a 16-bit microprocessor.
it's over 9000!!!!!!!!
Mark should review the remake of Halo for the 2600
@RawHunterX: They spat on it back in 2000, viewers of the show said "**** you, Jaguar has a good game: Tempest 2000." Which they reviewed after, then never went back to the Jaguar again. Ever.
TurboGrafix 16 Mecha-Death Machine...can't you unlock that in one of the 1000+ Armored Core Games?
@crisisded It Will Be A 2600 Joystick Controller With 2 Buttons Insted Of One
New turbografx16?
@SadoKaden, and ironically, Mario is a villain in this game.
lol the begining music of the game sounds like Bach - Toccata et fugue
Don't you agree?
@fpvshitsonhsv and that's what was awesome back then, we didn't needed much to enjoy our games, right now it's all about graphics and we're getting more like interactive graphic novels/movies rather than games (don't get me wrong, new games aren't that bad, but they doesn't have that special magic old games had, making them at best mediocre)
More like 5% of the Donkey Kong Jr Experience.
Quincyhughes: GO BACK TO THE 80s AND ASK THEM WHEN WE HAD JUST INVENTED THE GUI!!!! That was close to the best graphics for a home system ever. It was the most awesome thing to come into the world. Now being spoiled by the PS3 and XBox 360, people like you never consider how things were in the past.
The 7800 is better then te Colecovision version IMO. The Colecovision version is missing a level as well which is odd.
@SadoKaden, mmm, perhaps, only an evil person would squash little mushroom looking guys, and stomp innocent turtles and take those same turtles out of their shells, LOL!
true
@crisisded i wasnt even aware that anyone thought that angry video game nerd first said it....but yeah, that is true, people have been saying it ever since they were able to form contrasting opinions and ideas
Am I the only one that thought DK Jr. looked like a giant mutant turd?
i like this game :) to those of you who say the sounds are annoying: in real life they are not that annoying. you have to play a game in real life in order to be able to judge it -_-
If this version of donkeykong jr will (along with a shrinked atari 2600 hardware system) be ever put in a table top handheld,i will accept that as an alternative way for playing it that way instead, because i wouldn’t accept to play such version at home on the big screen, If i want to play donkeykong jr at home then i rather play the nes version, now considering the hardware limitations of the atari 2600.and the fact that people were used with such huge limitations of those table top handhelds, the atari 2600 version of donkeykong jr would fit well to such old handheld,
The same can be said about the first donkeykong game on the atari 2600,it would be so cool to have just that verstion of it on a game & watch or on a table top handheld as well just to play it on the go at atari 2600 quality,
So if somebody would like to create game & watch and table top clones of it and stiff an atari 2600 shrunked chipset inside it along woth donkeykong and donkeykong jr in it along with donkeykong labels on it,i will be definitely sold for it.
Because with a color dot matrix lcd screen and proper controls, that would be waaay cooler then those actual game & watch versions of it,
So let’s hope it will spark ideas by modders to do just that, because that would be really cool.
@MonsterJamAthuzest Only if the controllers are worth a damn... then I'm sold.
classic..the only game mario is an antagonist.

lolweb
laugh out load well eating bread
wow...
Yeah he does look like a sasqauch
I forgot about Atari and Coleco producing games for one another, Man hard to think about something like that now, it would be funny though if it did esspically since there would be really no console war and those annoying Fanboys would finally get a life and shower too.
for a 2600 those graphics look like final fantasy XIII.
it's 8-bits
HAVE YOU PLAYED ATARI TODAY? ;)
Intellivision version was better just like almost any Intellivision version of a game that is also on the 2600, the only exception was Frogger, The Intellivision version ha d an annoying delay in the control of Frogger so even though the graphics were better on Intellivision the horrid controll made the 2600 have a slight advantage over the Intellivision version of Frogger.
i have rubber knees
well it could be worse the controls could suck as bad as the gfx but i guess thats what atari gets for letting coleco make there copy of the game.

Dracula?
if you say so, am i a stereotype now?
Maybe he has buns of steel...
Oh dear... I'm really sorry to burst your bubble here, but contrary to so-called "popular" belief, "What were they thinking?" is NOT an AVGN original - it's a phrase that has been in existence since the development of language a long, long time ago. No doubt many people have said it before and many more will say it again.
Nothing against you, sir. Just thought to toss a bit of reality into the proceedings before this became another one of THOSE discussions.
oh yea, it's even less like 1%
The NES version looked alot better. It also didn't sound as annoying :-P
Needless to say but that game cartride is thousand times better then the game itself☹️🥲
:)
haha im no hitman im a shit man
Atari 10600? Whos With Me It Will Play Atari 2600 Atari 5200 Atari 7800 And Its Own Atari 10600 Game Cartridges
review resident evil 4
Colecovision version is about 80 million times better than this. I have both.
Wow, that looks NOTHING like the arcade or NES version.
you should jeck out AVGN
That is such a trendy little saying for little kids.
Because Japan.
8 bits
ha ha ha ha NO!!!!
Holy... This version looks and sounds really bad. I had the Colecovision version back then. It's much better than this.
I'm glad I never played this. Saved me some disappointment. Junior has no fruit to drop on the bad guys. Donkey Kong on 2600 was more fun.
Sorry, Atari
so this shared the same fate as 2600 Pacman eh?
the NES version is the best
very bad gaphics!! i like the NES version better!! (good game but i really don't want to play this game on Atari!)
Wow...the 2600 was really awful...what were we thinking? I mean, this is about 10% of the real game. Ugh.
Annoying sounds
What a horrible port of this game! Almost as bad as DK for Intellivision. The Nintendo/7800 ports are far superior to this. This game looks like it only cost $5 and a half hour to create.
