- Classic Game Room season 1. June 22, 2000. The boys at CGR review FROGGER for the Atari 2600 VCS Video Game System. This is an old school classic retro arcade hit from the 80's where you pilot a frog through several lanes of traffic and over obstacles in a rushing river. Frogger came out in the arcades and was quite a huge success, now it's a classic and on many game consoles like the Atari 2600, 5200 and Xbox Live Arcade XBLA for the Xbox 360. We're not sure if it'll be out on Playstation 3 PS3 or Wii, but Frogger was a huge pop icon back in the 1980's and is still famous today. Classic Game Room was the original classic video game review show and started in 1999 online by reviewing games like Frogger, Dig Dug and Ms Pac Man..
Classic Game Room reviewed Atari, NES, Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Dreamcast and Playstation... too bad they didn't get to Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 or Wii. Now Classic Game Room HD is covering the new systems.

They did use a "professional" studio. They did it with a company I think.

This was one of the early episodes of the CGR. "Frogger" was released in 1982 for the Atari 2600, and it was a decent port of an arcade classic which was first put out by Konami in 1981. Pretty decent game. I remember the tabletop arcade version as a kid and it wasn't too bad at all. But the 2600 version takes the cake.
Holy crap! He's absolutely right about the river currents. I've loved Frogger ever since I was 9 years old and I NEVER thought of that.
It's not every day you realize something that's so blatantly obvious and you spent your entire life completely failing to notice!
It won't hurt my enjoyment of the game, in fact, it makes me like it more, because now it has that fun quirk to it.

You can stay on the same log and go off screen and then end up on the other side of the screen. Just figured that out today lol
I never thought about the currents going opposite ways. Although in the arcade game, the ovals were actually turtles. Since turtles are live, they can swim against the current. It may not mean anything but just a possibility.
This is a classic. It is on SNES and on PS2's Midway Treasure Arcade series.
As the river has current flowing both left AND right, that probably explains why he dies if he jumps into it, it's no ordinary water, it's magic water! (that kills frogs)

Awesome review guys, I have frogger for SNES =P and my dad played the game alot back in the arcades, along with Pac/Ms/Baby Man.

I just bought the Atari Flashback. And while it did include 'Frogger,' I was upset that it wasn't the original Atari 2600 version. Yea. It was nice to play it again. But if nostalgia is supposed to be a factor, it would have been nice to see the version I played as a child.
Yeah, I found that with a few flashback games. I assume it had to do with licencing issues. Also, maybe they wanted the flashback to appeal to a broader audience so they used upgraded versions of games.
On my flashback 9 gold, space invaders was very different too. I think the original 2600 version may have been considered too difficult, so they used an easier, better looking version.
Flashback 9 is the best version because it has an SD Card slot so you can add your own games. I've got 3 versions of frogger on mine.

FROGGERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. opened my eyes to the world. and taught me not to get run over, or i would die.
Well I take back what I said. I'm still not as good as GLC, but I can hit level 5 now on a regular basis, I just needed some more practice. I love the ditty in this game when you start it up/finish a level.

at least Frogger wasn't as disspointing a port as Pac-Man was for the 2600.

I love Frogger, but I was playing this on my Atari the other day and I suck at this game. I don't remember ever being very good at this though. I guess we can't all be as good at this as George Costanza is in Seinfeld.
1st: that's a game for children and children are creative, they don't care about that, it's only an adults' concern;
2nd: the old consoles were more limited in terms of memory and processing capabilities;
3rd: a smaller frog could look too squared;
4th: the frog is the main character, it shouldn't be too small...
So, in my opinion that's a great game, very well coded and with a good, funny, entertaining and educational theme. Miss my childhood and Atari 2600 times...

One thing I never understood is the size of the frog in compared to the car or semi-truck. When was the last time you saw a frog that big?

If Frogger wasn't a frog and was a newt, it would be called Newter(XD).
This is what the video game industry has forgotten, games are meant to be fun, no matter how insane the idea, if it's fun, and people like to play it, it's a good game. Graphics are only meant to enhance the experience, I look forward to when developers recall this detail.

This game is pretty good for the atari 2600. However, the starpath version is the best for it imo.

frogger is a australian green tree frog and australian green tree frogs are some of the weakest swimmers in frog-kind and it does place in australia in the western australia and the northern territory

naah, the traffic on the highway doesn't do that in australia hahahahahaha. that would worsen australia's 22 million population! it would be more like 500,000 population if traffic did that yeah! this game doesn't make any sence and it's unrealistic, because how often does a frog try to cross the highway, then jumps in to the river floating on shit and logs and drowns in water where frogs like to be in. but it's still fun!
