  • Watch in high definition! Classic Game Room HD reviews the Atari 7800 ProSystem from 1986! The Atari 7800 Pro System was originally supposed to be released in 1984 but was delayed due to the market in those years. After the success of the NES in 1985 the Atari was released in 1986 to an un-enthusiastic public. The Atari 7800 has an excellent variety of arcade games like Xevious, Ms. Pac Man and Robotron 2084. Numerous original Atari video games like Desert Falcon and Ballblazer are available for the system, as well as favorites like Choplifter, Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong. This hardware review features the Atari 7800 game console, the American Atari 7800 controller, the European Atari 7800 controller, the Atari 7800 instruction manual and an Atari catalog from 1986 called "Get the Atari Advantage!" The Atari 7800 is backwards compatible with Atari 2600 games and plays the library of 2600 classics like Yars Revenge and Berzerk! Classic Game Room loves the old Atari consoles and collects Atari gear. Check out CGRHD Atari 7800 reviews because Classic Game Room is an Atari 7800 reviewer reviewing Atari 7800 games. Learn a lot from CGR episodes like how to play Atari, how to hook up Atari and where to buy Atari games, hardware and accessories.

    I just realized, 2600 + 5200 = 7800!

    • @yorgle11
      @yorgle11 7 лет назад +16

During development, the designers originally called it the 3600. Some 1983 technical documents refer to it under that name.
They were basically ditching the 5200 and starting over with 2600 compatibility as the starting point, so I guess they thought "3600" was a number that made sense.
Marketing later decided it needed to be a bigger number than the 5200. In an interview (which I listened to years ago, so this isn't an exact quote), one of the designers described the thinking as something like "2600 compatibility with 5200 graphics, so 2600+5200=7800". He wasn't a marketing guy but that was his take on it. (Technically it wasn't really 5200 graphics, the new GPU was more powerful than that)
I think that's also why the color of the 7800 logo was typically written in purple. The 2600 logo was red, 5200 was blue, and red+blue = purple.

Its a real shame Atari screwed themselves over. If they just released a successor to the 2600 earlier and had more original titles other than arcade ports, they could've become a main competitor to the NES. Who knows, maybe today they would be releasing the Atari Bobcat 124800. I hope one day they surprise us and come back to the video game market rather than making plug and play consoles of their past glory.

I remember being a tiny Weeaboo, back around '87 or '88. My very first console was the 7800, and being around 4 or 5 years old at the time, I found the stock controllers easy to handle for my then small-child hands due to the size and shape. On Friday and Saturday nights, my mom would sit up late with me and the two of us would play games like Galaga and Ms. Pacman together. However, time rolled on, systems changed, games changed, and my mom eventually stopped playing video games while I kept at it. Of course, that doesn't mean she won't go off and play Galaga against me if we find it on a classic arcade cabinet somewhere for old time's sake.

Atari 7800 is the best vintage console. If the video game crash of 1983 didn't happen there would have been a lot more games for it and it would have kicked the Colecovisions ass.

When I was little I was really into how the graphics looked so I always liked the Master System better than the Nes and the 7800, but now I think that the 7800 is the funnest system of them all, and some of the arcade classics on the 7800 to me are very impressive in graphics, and for them to be impressive with the boss man doing things so cheap, you have to wonder if the 7800 was in different hands. This could have been the better 8 bit system, sales wise. Viva la 7800!!

I got a Atari 7800 as a gift from my parents around 1990 I believe , it was bundled with like 20 games in the box as well, I enjoyed many of the games such as dark chambers, desert falcon, pole position, donkey Kong jr, Mario bros, galaga and chop lifter, i wish I still owned them all, ended up selling everything at a yard sale for 30 bucks! I believe I had midnight mutants as well as ninja golf! Such ashame, I’m hoping to track down another console if I can find a good price on them! Love this video though, you’re straight to the point and honest about you’re reviews without sugarcoating any kind of bullshit.

I still have my 7800. I bought it and a bundle of 40 CIB games as new old stock, about 26 years ago. It still works great! Atari Age really supports this console with a lot of great homebrew titles, some of which are ports of Arcade games ported to the 7800 by people in the homebrew community. For example I bought their release of 'Frenzy" for the 7800. A port of the classic Stern Arcade game (sequel to 'Berzerk'). The cartridge also contains a great 7800 version of 'Berzerk.' This cartridge uses the Melody board, reproducing the original robotic speech samples for both games. 'Beef Drop' is an excellent port of the Arcade game 'BurgerTime.' I own that one too. There have been so many homebrew/aftermarket games for the 7800 that its library of games has nearly doubled since 2010. The same thing has been happening with the Jaguar, with many Atari ST and Amiga games being ported to the Jag. Oh wait, you posted this video in 2009.
Hold on to any 'Ballblazer' carts that you come across. Atari Age offers 'Pokey' versions of some of their releases for the 7800. The Pokey chip was a sound chip Atari used in some of its Arcade games (and in the 5200 console). But if a person wants a 'Pokey' version of a game then they have to provide their own Pokey chip. The quickest way to do this is to send Atari Age a 'Ballblazer' cartridge when they place their order. 'Ballblazer' was the only release to contain this chip. I predict that 'Ballblazer' will become rare and expensive due to this. My mint CIB copy I refuse to part with.
Oh, and I have that same poster. It reminds me of Sega during the days of their Master System console. Many games for it came with a poster, which doubled as a catalog if you looked at the other side.

I got a 2600 brand new from Fedco in the early 90s and actually sent away for that T-shirt sometime in the mid 90s when I was in junior high. The promotion had been over for some time, but I actually got a letter from Atari stating that I would not be getting the shirt. I thought that was cool they took the time to write back, and in high school when I took graphic arts one of the T-shirts I screen printed was my own Atari shirt!

I had one of these. I knew it wasn't going to stand against the NES. But as a loyal 2600 player, I had to stick with my side even in the declining years. Forgetting that it didn't do so well, I had a lot of fun with it. It had great classic games like "Pole Position" II, "Ikari Warriors," and "Crossbow." Even though its "Kung Fu Master" wasn't quite as good as the arcade version, I still enjoyed it. Thanks for the video. I liked it.

The games press at the time (winter 1986) were reporting that Atari were planning to unveil the 7800 for it's UK Launch at the Christmas Atari Show in the Royal Horticultral Hall, Westminster, London, where it would be the centerpiece of the show, expected UK launch price £69.95, lot of USA software and some UK titles ready for UK launch
Bob Gleadow then convinced Atari the 65XE was a better fit for the UK market, so Atari went with that, finally releasing the 7800 much later.

Atari 7800 was my first game console, my parents bought it for me and my Brother because the games were cheap. We actually went through 1 or 2 duds before getting the one that still works today. I remember it being cool at first, but loathing it later once all my friends got NES's, Sure NES games were 60$ and 7800's were 20, but every NES game was 10 times better.
Still, going to flea markets and yard sales, getting shoeboxes full of 2600 games is a memory I'll always cherish.

That's the ticket. lol Maybe someday I'll get out one of my game systems, but I don't see it happening anytime soon though.

My baseball game I have, I have more season sets for it, than I can count. I covered every era of the game & I have all the greats from Ty Cobb to Babe Ruth & the 1927 Yankees Murders Row lineup, to Willie Mays, & Hank Aaron & all the way back to 1914 & the deadball era. As for my wrestling game, the one thing I love about that one is, I can bring NEW wrestlers into the fold anytime I want. I can also invent new wrestlers & bring them into the fold as well. Plus I can & have, invented new & wild & crazy match concepts for my federation & best of all is, it didn't cost me a thing. Imagine that. No high cost at the mall, no waiting in lines, no fighting the traffic, & best of all is, I don't have to wait till the holidays before it becomes available & usually at a ridiculous high price. Whenever I come up with an idea, (usually while fishing behind my house,) I go back in the house & sit at the table & put the idea together & next thing ya know, NAILED IT!!! And the rest is history. I even have up a forum where we can post at. I've been at it for 32 years & I'm just getting started. Any night my tag team can raise hell & piss off the humanoids, that's a damn good night. lol

awesome i never knew it was backwards compatible. I wonder why it wouldn't play 5200 games?
I never even knew backwards compatibility was a thing until ps2. the 7800 was about 15 years ahead of its time.

I love the 7800. It only had 59 games and its biggest flaw is that it's missing many arcade classics like Pac-Man, Zaxxon and Burgertime, but the HUGE plus is that it contains the definitive ports of many games. Some may ask why I prefer the Intellivision version of Pac Man over the closer NES version, for instance. One word: Uniqueness. Now with the advantage of emulation and game collection packages, the only point of playing arcade ports is uniqueness to the Arcade, and the 7800 has that.

  • @notthehelper6289

The only problem with the 7800 is that it does not have composite video output (mod is available but not standard) or stereo sound. That was real behind the curve when this was finally released along with the 2600 JR.

(just looked at an Atari Advantage poster in my 7800 Donkey Kong)....wish we'd have gotten the controllers advertised in that poster!
I was able to find an old beat up 7800 box with two units inside for $4.99 at a local Goodwill about 20 years ago. One didn't work, but the other worked great. And it STILL works great! Right now I have about 20 titles. Other than the sound chip and the stock controllers the games tend to look and play great.
Never regretted getting one....especially at THAT price :)

1:25 "how many modern game systems will still be working in 22 years?"
My answer? 99% of gamecubes (obviosly), the majority of dreamcasts. Probably most origonal xboxs (what will kill it is the cd tray motor). Most Wii's, if you take care of it. I'd also say that a good number of PS3slims will last that long.

especially wiis will work for a long time. it had the lowest failure rate of that generation of consoles, at only 2% - compated to 6% for ps3 and 22% for xbox 360

I am now the proud owner of the atari 7800 with games such as donkeykong, dkjr, mariobros,ms pac man, atari 2600 popeye & sky skipper,i can’t wait till i get pole position in the male for it😁
With all these nintendo games aside from non-nintendo games on it along with it’s backward compatibility feature,it’s a cool design, the atari 7800 formed a serious threat against nintende’s nes on paper😁👍

Nah, definitely not, the system did not have much to offer in comparison with Nintendo. They should have thought this through and release something that was competitive with Nintendo instead of this complete obsolete technology that looked like nothing.
We see this patern constantly in history. Nintendo did not thought their decision through either, so they sticked to this obsolete technology with catridges, which is why they got what they deserved also and several developers switch over to Sony (and later Microsoft), which is an effect that is still visible, for they have been stoped working with them ever since then, and the same thing with Sony and the PS3, thinking people would buy it anyway after the success of the PS1 and PS2. Actually even Sega had a similiar problem when they grow so big in such a short amount of time even though Segas technology always was the best, so they made some very serious mistakes...

Yours is the original manual that mentions the Home computer adapter. I have three revisions and only see that on the earliest one. Does yours have the expansion port on the side? Note: some have the opening with a port, some just have the opening, and some have neither.

Most older games were infamous for difficulty (thus the phrase "Nintendo Hard"), in order to stretch the replay value of a game, this was done in arcades for the same reason. Nowadays you get a standing ovation just for starting the game...with no emphasis on local multilayer (Thus why the WII and games like Smash Bros are outselling EVERYTHING)

I was born 85 so i got a NES for my 5th birthday, it was already cheaper since it had a couple years already, and this is when i got into video games. Completely missed the Atari generations but i tried some games later on, and even in the NES era it really didn't hook me up at all. Tried again with GAME ROOM on 360... there is barely 1 or 2 games i tough where ok... Obviously its too old for me. Im not a big retro fan but i still like to play games from my childhood on NES or SNES, even N64 to a degree. But emulation does the thing just fine :)

A small library didn't matter back then. Everyone I knew had a console and were lucky if they owned 10 games. The only console I remember for its library is the 2600. That console was old when I was young but every time I bumped into someone who owned one they would have at least 20 games.

I'm sure this has been said before, but I don't wanna look through 724 comments. The Atari 7800 was not canceled by the game crash (not directly). Time-Warner was getting weighed down by Atari in 1984, so they sold the company to Jack Tramiel, founder of Commodore computers. He wanted to focus on Atari's line of computers, as those were his forte. Little did he know, the NES was coming. When it came, he had to compete in the home console market. So to be stingy, he finally launched the 7800!

its the tc-8188, most people say its a terrible rip off (it looks like a psp) but i think the people who say that dont truely respect the retro games it delivers. it comes with a 120 games in 1 cart along with tv cables and a 2nd controller. ive checked myself and all the 120, 119, 112, 25, and 33 games in 1 carts ive bought for it are real nintendo games and there are no duplicates. i feel the system is underated by the people who review it, because it has brought me countless hours of gameplay

The NES was released in North America in 1985. It was basically a redesign of the Nintendo Famicom, which was released in Japan in 1983. Maybe what you saw on screen was the game's original copyright date, which if it was an arcade game could well have been released in 1981. Donky Kong, for example, was released in North America in 1981.
Games ported from arcade machines to home consoles usually had two copyright dates. When the original arcade version was copyrighted, and then the port.
