This 1981 classic from Activision shows a game ahead of its time with excellent gameplay, even if it doesn't really resemble a hockey game today. Check opponents, score goals and play with a two player team in a 3 minute game. Hockey games today have licenses from the NHL and play on the PS3 and Xbox 360 game consoles, this classic on the Atari has imaginary teams that you can name and call your own. CGR believes that our blue and red team is the 1991 Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins with Mario Lemiux and Paul Coffey! Booya, take that green and yellow team! Retro sports games are often more enjoyable for me than the new ones with all their HD graphics and official licenses. The simplicity makes it twice as entertaining, since nothing distracts from the fun.
The blue and red colors, always reminded me of guys playing in their Spider-man Pajamas....

Such a beautiful and appropriate intro. I have to say Mark i was getting worried there for a bit. Those pansy bastards in the yellow and green were skating all over you but in true Pittsburgh fashion you game back in the last half to beat them like a rented mule. SCRATCH MY BACK WITH A HACKSAW, THE KITCHEN IS CLOSED!!!! lol Mike lang is a legend. I hope to see more Hockey Nights in the Game room. Nice review and even nicer mug lol. Work on your deke though, partner and GO PENS!!!!!!!!

This is a fun game for 2 players, but I wish the characters could skate faster. In the '80s when I was a kid, I used to play this game with my neighbor all the time. We played hockey together in real life too.
I have NHL Hockey (1991) for Genesis, and 94 right to 98, then 99 on PS1 and so on.
Another favorite of mine for the 2600. In fact my username is a combination of my two passions - Atari and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Damn! I know those 4 guys are tired going from end to end the whole hockey distance like that.😭🤣🤣😂😂😂😂 That's like a one on one game of basketball going full court.
This was a great game, played it on the Activision Anthologies for PS2.
I really enjoy the faster speed mode, the standard speed is too slow for me.
Please review Activision Anthologies, I think it would be a perfect review, plus it be one of the better ways for people to get introduced to atari classics.

Think there where more then one hockey game on the NES. But this was the best one. You could start a fight and stuff. Real fun! =)

i had the official 09 penguins stanley cup glass pint glass and i was playing video games. put the glass on the floor so it didnt fall and break. had a bottle on the table that fell onto my glass and it broke the glass. DOH! cant find that glass anywhere.

Ahoy, if you enjoyed this game I suggest giving Ice Hockey for the NES a try, you get a team of 5 and can start massive brawls by fighting over the puck... Best hockey game ever...

the key is not to fight with the computer at all..get the puck and shoot it off the immediate wall from center ice...I regular beat the puter 50-0 57-2
I have never played this game. Neve rplayed an atari for that matter. Great use for the atari though. The Atari doubles as a coaster too lol.

PAUL COFFEY...Jaromir Jagr is more like it! Him and Lemieux made more highlights together that year than Coffey did in all his years after!

Great review. The Flyers are my team, but I liked hearing about your Penguins mug. I definitely saw some "RUTHLESS TRIPPING" in that game against the computer. (See the commerical for Ice Hockey with Phil Hartman).
Good comeback on the computer too. You almost sealed that one away with a late goal (would have made it a two goal win) but you shot it just outside the post.

You call that Hockey? Only 2 players per team? Worse the Atari Baseball.
Intellivision had a real looking Hockey Rink and had 4 Players (1 of them was the goalie) you could trip the other teams players and it had penalties and it came out Before the Actvision Ice Hockey. Even the Sound Effects or the Puck being knocled around were pretty realistic for non digitised sound effects and when you scored you would hear the crowd cheer , no lame off key beep.
