The AtGames ColecoVision Flashback: Kind of Awesome, But Kind of Missing Something

  • The ColecoVision Flashback is a retro gaming console released by AtGames in 2016. It is a compact and portable unit designed to look and play like the original ColecoVision console from the early 1980s.
The controller design is based on the classic ColecoVision joystick, which was known for its sturdy construction and precise control. The Flashback includes two of these controllers, so players can enjoy multiplayer games with a friend.
Overall, the ColecoVision Flashback is a nostalgic tribute to a classic gaming era, aimed at both casual and hardcore fans of vintage video games. This little unit is pretty cool, but it's missing something very specific that ColecoVision players are sure to notice.

Back in 1984 (approximately), we finally got an Atari 2600 and games. These were cheaper all of a sudden, and even poor people like us could now afford games (we had no idea the videogame crash was a thing). Space Invaders was $5 at the local Toys R Us. A year later, we got a Colecovision. Man, that system was my favorite.

Being raised by a single mom, I guess she felt bad we lived in a bad neighborhood and she worked long hours so she got me every gaming system in the 80's starring off with the Sears woodgrain Atari 2600 and of course ColecoVision god I remember that joystick felt you we're holding a 2 litter of pop. They also sold a steering wheel for the driving games I put the wheel on the coffee table with the gas pedal on the floor can't remember the name of the game I got with it but your on some alien planet driving around gathering crystals to refuel your spaceship and my favorite Tarzan game where you climb trees and punch giant Apes in the face, good times!

Hi Jon, it's surprising how many people even from our generation never heard of Colecovision. I had friends who had the 2600 and later the Intellivision and I didn't have anything at the time. But after the Colecovision came out, and being a fan of their handheld stuff, I hounded my parents for it and got one for Christmas. I was the only kid I knew who had it and still have it to this day 40 years later. I might set it up every 5 years for an hour or so, but its just one of those things you look at and is a direct link to your childhood.

I had an Atari 2600 as a kid and loved it (obviously !) but by 1982 I'd moved onto the ZX Spectrum home computer (not so big over there in North America but huge here in the UK). I was aware of the colecovision at the time through computer/video magazines but I had no idea how much better it was than the Atari. Watching this video almost makes me want one. If there was HDMI connectivity I might have tried to get hold of one, but those joysticks look like a nightmare !

The biggest issue for colecovision was the video game crash. This system was great for the time period. Games looked better than any other system at the time. The second biggest problem was the Adam. They were quick to release it before working out all the bugs. They had so many issues in the beginning that Coleco was never able to win back favor with the consumer.

Great video, Jon. I had a ColecoVision when I was a kid. They always did a good job with the arcade games. I missed out on that CollectorVision Phoenix(Updated ColecoVision System) that came out awhile ago but am hoping someone like Evercade will release a volume or two of ColecoVision games. I would even be happy if ATGames re-released the ColecoVision Flashback as long as it had HDMI. Thanks, thumps up'd, and subscribed.

I guess I'll be the first comment saying that yes, my family DID have a Colecovision when I was growing up. We went from the Atari VCS/2600 to the Colecovision. Some of those games you were playing I remember playing on our Colecovision. I picked up one of these Flashback consoles a few years ago to give to my brother as a gift. Of course, I had to try it out first to, um, make sure it was working. Yeah, that's it. :D
As for should you do more coverage of Colecovision? Absolutely! And thanks Jon.

I remember getting a Colecovision lot from a garage sale in the mid to late 90s. Dam Busters was the game that intrigued me the most, but I could never really get into, because I only got a part of the documentation. The part that was the most interesting, the mission briefings in their little envelope, but not the actual manual or overlays.
So it was a game I could load up, flip through the different views, scour the missions, but could never for the life of me figure out how to play.

Kicked myself for selling it on eBay in the early 2000s for $100 for everything. So I did not hesitate to buy the when someone else sold their old Colecovision set for $20 at a garage sale.

Much like you, I never had a Colecovision. I played one a few times because I had a cousin who always had the coolest tech before any of us did. I too loved the more vivid colors and variety of games it had. I have one of those Colecovision Flashbacks, and it's difficult to navigate with the controller. If I recall, the original one had more flexibility to it, more pitch and seemed to be more versatile in your hand. I would like to see a review on it, I've been tempted to get an original.

I still have a ColecoVision with a dozen or so games. Mr Do, Pepper II, DK, DK Jr, Mousetrap & Popeye were my favs. Coleco owned the “home” console licensing for DK at that time and purposely made the 2600 version poor to make the ColecoVision look that much better.

  • @barcham
    @barcham Год назад

ColecoVision was the best of the early consoles. They also had a different controller that was like a pistol grip with buttons under each finger, and there was a curved shield in front, to hide which button you were pressing from your opponent, because the buttons each selected a certain play in the football game and the pitch in the baseball game. It was an amazing system, but like yourself, I never owned one, but one of my friends did, and we used to spend hours on Friday and Saturday nights playing each other. While this unit is very appealing, without Donkey Kong, it is a no sell for me.
Trivia for people who were unaware... Donkey Kong was supposed to be named MONKEY Kong, but someone made a typo and the rest is history! 😲

The Colecovision was soooo close to arcade quality at the time and I would play the demos in the stores at the mall I lived near. I took home the pamphlets and drooled over the pics. The Achilles heal is the joypad on the controller and this plug and play version is slightly worse. I have the version from Sam's Club with a few extra overlays and it's ok. I totally understand Nintendo games are missing, but why couldn't they get Mouse Trap, Lady Bug, Mr. Do, Burger Time, and Tapper??? It would have made this mini close to perfect for me. That said, Princess Quest is a surprising and solid Homebrew game! I have always hoped for this to get hacked so we could add roms, but it has never happened. Nice overview video.

I’m 72 years old (baby boomer) I was around when it all started. I was a Atari fan, I have owned just about every console and computers they made. The Colecovision was actually pitted the Atari 5200. The graphics on the 5200 where better because the colecovision’s graphics were very cartoonish and the sounds were abut tinny. I have a colecovision which I purchased at a yard sale for $20 it came with about 10 games and the Atari 2600 adapter. I played around with it and I know both the 5200 and Colecovision had awful controllers. I still liked the 5200 controllers better, I never had that much trouble with most games, you just had to get use to it. The Colecovision controllers joystick would acutally break. I now play my 7800 most of the time it’s Donkey Kong is just about arcade perfect with all the screens. I would like to see you do more on the Colecovision !

Christmas of ‘82 I got a 2600 and exactly one year later my best friend down the street got a ColecoVision.
The “crash” was something none of us knew nor cared about.
All I knew was I felt cheated. It felt, to me, as though he had a legitimate arcade system due to ColecoVision’s superior graphics and sound.
However, I noticed how very often my friend wanted to play my 2600.
Well…of course I had around about 40 games and had about 7 or so.
But, I recall being jealous and blown away by Donkey Kong and Xaxxon!
My personal favorite however was WarGames! Great game! I wish they could have included that on this unit.
That single game is the only reason I want a real ColecoVision to this day.
I had a perfect emulation about 20 years ago on my iMac but I’ve not found a satisfactory replacement since. And now that I’m on iOS and iPadOS exclusively, I’m sure I’ll never, going right back to grabbing an actual unit just and only for WarGames. Heh

I really loved this flashback system because although I didn't have a Colecovision,, originally, I did have an Atari 800xl, which shares titles through it.
The problem, however, is that after a year, the first port stopped receiving the signal to move left. So, both controllers will not move left in the first port, but both work perfectly in the second port.
For the single player games that I purchased it for - Montezuma's Revenge and Gateway to Apshai - they're now unplayable.
If anyone has a suggestion about that, just let me know.
    Thanks!

@@GenXGrownUp Yes, the great surprise of those fantastic games included was the reason I bought it, but as I looked about online in regard to the problem that was encountered - there wasn't much, if any, relative support.
I did actually check to see if any pins in the port were misaligned, or if anything was loose or detached when opening it up, but everything looked new and the same as I could tell.
Aside from calling Best Buy's Geek Squad, I spoke with a video game repair guy online who told me what indications to look for on the mother board and such, but still - nothing was found.
And so, for now - as disappointing as it is, I've just kept the Colecovision in a storage locker.
A few months ago, I almost actually purchased a used one online, but held off for the time being.
Hopefully, the issue can be fixed at some point in the future.

To me at least, this is probabaly the best flashback system to get. The colecovision had some great games on it, & unlike other consoles, where the 2600 flashbacks are missing a lot of recognizable titles that defined the system, & the intellivison one the same problem, the colecovision flashback has a bunch of games that I feel really defined the system. And unlike the atari flashbacks, the homebrews on the colecovision flashback are actually really well done. The best flashback, for me personally, to get in the modern day!
