    Back in the day, I called Coleco's 800 number for Colecovision SO often they literally recognized my voice without me telling them my name. They knew me well enough they gave me the occasional "scoop". I knew Donkey Kong Jr was coming before the official announcement, same for them winning the bidding war on Dragon's Lair.
    Their original intent with DL was to duplicate the arcade laserdisc to use with a home version. They were debating internally whether to sell a Colecovision branded laserdisc player with DL or to sell the laserdisc and an expansion module that hooked up to an existing laserdisc player, the latter option complicated by there being no clear market leader to make the expansion module compatible with.
    Oh, what might have been. To have a truly faithful arcade port of the technologically cutting-edge, phenomenally popular Dragon's Lair at home was practically UNIMAGINABLE....

    My friend had a Coleco Vision. I was blown away by Donkey Kong after having only played it on the 2600.

  • @kenwheeler3637
    @kenwheeler3637 3 года назад +10

    Donkey Kong was always, and still is, one of my favorite games. So when the ColecoVision came out with DK as a pack-in it was a must have. Plus the graphics for all the games for so much more advanced looking than the 2600 and INTV. I remember ordering Zaxxon from the JCPenny's catalog and that it was significantly more expensive than the rest of the CV games. Think it was $45 vs $30.

    • @geraldford6409
      @geraldford6409 3 года назад +3

      Yep, same here. Sears, JCPEnny, Wards Catalogs were the Internet /Amazon back in the day
      Pretty much the only issue with Zaxxon was the jerky scrolling (and CV's monochrome sprites, which was standard for most games, so can't ding that)
      But for 82-83, the detail level and small pixels allowing smooth diagonal graphic detail was amazing for the day, vs the HUGE "pixels" of the 2600/INTV
      Big complaint I have with homebrew retro releases- rather than just trying to replicate the arcade game again, a better approach would be to do sequels with the look and feel of the original, but with new mazes/screens to learn and play.

    • @richardadams4928
      @richardadams4928 2 года назад +1

      @@geraldford6409 Gonna respectfully disagree with you somewhat, Mr. President. My problems with Zaxxon, besides the jerky scrolling, were that I hated that the gun turrets had no gun barrels (petty? Maybe, but it bugged me) and the HIDEOUS sound. To me, the "explosions" sounded more like a slamming door.
      I had the Radio Shack Color Computer version programmed by Steve Bjork, and I liked it MUCH better.

    I loved the celecovison as a kid. My fav games were miner 2049ner, space fury, venture and Mr Do. My mom used to love pepper II. I bought the Coleco mini and was disappointed. It’s nice to see that the community still support this great system.

    The first time I saw the Colecovision, I believe it was in August of 1982 at the Canadian National Exhibition. I had never heard of it before. There were people lined up to play about 30 Colecovisions set up with Donkey Kong. I couldn't believe it was a home system. I was a big fan of Intellivision and had it for 2 years by that point. I seriously considered buying it that autumn, but eventually just went to home computers.

    I met you in Phoenix for Game On Expo 2019. I own the number 2 Phoenix system that is fully autographed by the CollectorVision team responsible for the Phoenix. My name is in the Phoenix manual. I was the guy from Canada with the long hair who brought up Phantasmagoria 2 at the panel convo with you, Metal Jesus and the other personalities. Great to see your review of the Phoenix. I own 3 Phoenix consoles...the black autographed console from run 1, the ADAM console from run 1 and another black sealed console from run 2 which I will never open. Keep making great vids, and I hope to see you again at another retro gaming show. You were very nice to talk to after the panel chat and you signed my ColecoVision Game book. And yes, I still have that special HANCOCK ATARI participation collecitble you gave out. God Bless friend!

    I imagine others have noted this, but be forewarned: the Phoenix does not work with some modern flatscreens. The developers say they are addressing this, but that’s been their stance for a long, long time. That said, I connected my Phoenix to a Sony Trinitron (these games were developed for tubes!) via a HDMI to composite adapter and it’s spectacular. The Phoenix is fabulous, and I’m so glad to be one of the lucky few to own one. Three can’t miss but perhaps lesser known games are Frenzy (as John points out), Pepper ll, and Oil’s Well.

    One of my memories of the ColecoVision is how much I did not like the controller. Being able to use a "normal" controller for the games would be a great improvement.
    I checked out their site to see if they were still selling them, and it looks like you are one of the lucky few.
    I am fortunate enough to have a real ColecoVision and a fairly large cartridge collection, so I won't cry too much.

    I got the same nostalgia as you for the coleco vision. First console i ever played, and yes the game was donkey kong. My mother's favorite games were space panic and congo bongo. I had caveman but it glithed so never got far, the smurfs, double cardrige robin hood/ sir lancelot, zaxon, cabage patch kids and others tha i can't remember right now. Even if i was living in quebec we had acces to these awesome video games. I got games on emulator but with a keyboard its not the same. Thanks for this video Jonh 😀

    Never played on a ColecoVision as I was just a toddler when this was released. It clearly suffered from bad timing as it was released around the time of the videogame crash. The games look like a significant upgrade from the Atari 2600, the first console I did get to play. Appreciate you sharing this gem with us.

    I didn't have one as a kid, but I had an uncle who had one, and got to play a number of games. Lady Bug and Pepper II were always lots of fun, and the ColecoVision version of Spy Hunter was my favorite on the system! I'll eventually hunt an actual cartridge down, but they can be pricey! I did pick up another CV, had to rebuild the power switch and replace the controller port IC, then add an A/V mod, but combined with the AtariMax flash cart, I'm all set to enjoy real ColecoVision action now and set some score records!

    From what I understand the Phoenix has the Super Game Module hardware built-in. Is that true? There are many homebrew games for the ColecoVision that require it. I just sent Toby at CollectorVision an email requesting another batch of consoles be made. I missed out. Interesting that the ColecoVision has the same internal hardware as the Sega SG-1000, but the ColecoVision versions look better. The MSX also shared the same chips and such, but it had more RAM than a basic ColecoVision.

    Frenzy was my favorite and I still play it from time to time. It's the closest to the actual arcade version than any other Coleco game. Props for the H.E.R.O port which Metal Jesus never mentions even though H.E.R.O. is one of his favorites.

  • @robertgijsen

    Out first console was a Videopac... 7000 or something, known as the Odyssey 2 in the US. I think I was 5 years old. We had that for only a few weeks when my dad could trade it in for a ColecoVision. And wow we were blown away. I loved that system. Renting games (which wasn't common in Europe), playing them all weekend long, wow great memories. The thing I regret the most of all my computer-history looking back is that we sold the ColecoVision to raise money to get an MSX2 which was hot in the Netherlands. And of course at the time we didn't blink an eye, as the MSX2 was superior in it's own right. But looking back... Oh my I feel so bad I don't have that machine anymore.
    My favorite game was Tarzan. It's hugely underrated in my opinion, for the time and the hardware it was a big game with quite some depth to it.
    I own an IT-company now which logo's font is hugely based on the ColecoVision font. I've never told my companion why it's that font, be just liked it, but for me there's a whole history behind that 😊

    Nice review.
    Another CV Geek here.
    I had my first CV in preorder May/June 1982, got mine August 82
    Phoenix= Beautiful system, heard about it a few years ago, hadn't ordered, regret that. OTOH, it usually takes a few revs to debug software and hardware, add missing features
    I've been doing retro console collecting since the later 80s, buying up closeout 2600 and INTV carts at Odd Lot (smaller precursor to Big Lots) after the 83-84 Crash then others when ebay hit around 99. Bought CV, 5200, Vectrex and other multicarts and SD card interfaces when they first hit ~20 years ago
    Some Phoenix improvement suggestions: at least 2x USB ports, 2.0 fine for low cost. 4x ports even better. This would allow use of any USB controller or retro controller with USB adapter.
    Either built in Wifi and BT or ability to use USB wifi/BT adapters, to allow ROM downloads and BT controllers, and maybe BT headphones.
    Ethernet port or compatibility with common USB Ethernet adapters, again for filesharing or ROM download via Internet from the Phoenix servers, easy purchases.

      @@maniaque37 Thanks for the info. The lack of response from them turned me off quick. I used that earmarked $ for a Super NT instead.

    There's a trick with Donkey Kong if you go halfway up the ladder and then go up again you speed run up the ladder

    Good video!! Cool looking system! Wish I would have grab one up! Never had a Colecovision system! I had an Atari 2600!

      Thank you, the 2600 was great. I recommend tracking down a Coleco for some of their arcade games.

    Now that you have the Phoenix, you should download Zaxxon Super Game. It's the same as regular Coleco Zaxxon, but with many more levels and added sprites.

    I didn't know anything about this. I emailed them as soon as I saw this video. They said this
    "Thank you for contacting us,
    There is no more Phoenix for sale currently. There is no plan for another batch.
    There is no waiting list as well. Pleased follow us on Facebook and watch our website. If there is any cancellation, we will announce it there.
    We are now the original coleco team we are a new team.
    Thank you."
    I'm bummed out :(

      The 2nd batch has created quite an interest. Hopefully they will consider a 3rd batch.

    I am after a retro Coleco console for some time, and this is the first I've heard of this excellent machine.
    Being in Ireland means it's extremely difficult to hear about such things, let alone get hold of one.
    Now it seem they're all sold out.
    Darn it.
