Bismillaah, Very true, and even in Indonesia, a muslim majority country, this happens too. We can see in social medias, people comment on religion as "Arabic" or "Backwards" or say "Go ride your camel" and the likes. While those who follow their desires, are viewed as "progressive" or "modern". And sadly, these people who comment on religion are university students, educated people.. Of course this is not an absolute case (not every educated person are like this here of course), but more and more of these kind of people pops up everywhere, and they voice their thoughts in every channel/media. These people are thinking backwards. They see the truth as falsehood, and strive against it. And they see falsehood as truth, and strive to it. There is so little ta'zhiim for religion in the medias today.. Allaahul musta'aan..
And sadly also, I found the cure (radd/refutations) for most of the syubhat and syahwat I found being spread on people here, in channels/lectures that talks about misguidance in the West.. like on university issues, western ideologies, secularism, feminism, and the likes. That shows how true the hadith that says the ummah will follow the sunnah of Rome and Persia/Christians and Jews.. to the point that we in muslim societies have the same "diseases" that they have.

Especially when most people don't have a good reason to believe that this deity exists. For example: the Quran is supposed to be the exact word of Allah revealed to Muhammad (a merchant in Mecca) and would be the message from Allah for the whole of humanity. If the whole of humanity was supposed to hear this message, why was it then only revealed to one person in Mecca? Why didn't the angel Jibriel also reveal the word of Allah to other people in other continents, so everyone was informed and shouldn't only rely on hearsay? With the importance of its message (how to live life so you won't burn in hell for eternity), the method of its revelation seems a bit unreliable and a bit unfair towards everyone not living in the middle east. With this method of revalation, it was also very easy to adjust the words to make it fit someone's else agenda. This could be Muhammad himself, or someone who wrote down his words because he couldn't write himself. To remember the whole quran word by word, as revealed by the angel in the cave to be written down later on by other people, Muhammad must have had superhuman memory. Nobody is able to remember that much text word for word. This makes me believe that Muhammad actually made it up himself. Maybe he did really believe that he was a prophet, but I think that would be just like people nowadays who think that they can talk with ghosts. They really believe themselves too, but with tests it can be shown that they simply project their own spiritual thoughts and assumptions on this abstract idea of a ghost. I do agree with you that some people have really low and silly desires. Just look at all the nonsense on TV and pointless luxury products. But some people have larger desires that actually serve a greater good (the whole humanity), while not being religious. They often have a humanistic worldview, which is based on undogmatic moral reasoning.

Just try it as a leap of faith, and be open. :) Plenty prophets were sent to guide all the tribes, and nations. Some listened, but most people didn't listen, and were antagonistic. I think the wisdom behind revealing the Quran to a certain group is that these people were more receiving of the guidance; as for other tribes/nations around their reception of the message might not have been the same. That's just from what I think, Allah knows best. Also, someone who hasn't received the message isn't accountable for what they don't know. On the other hand, we have been given the ability to think, so the least expected of someone is to have acknowledged their Creator, as it is in our fitrah (innate predisposition), and reject the worship of others aside from Him. The surrounding society/culture/religion(s) of a person often corrupt this fitrah. The ayat (verses of the Quran) of revelation didn't need to be memorised by Prophet Muhammad (SAWS), instead it was like writing into a ROM. Allah lifted him from the responsibility of memorisation. Even if he (SAWS) did (and he didn't), there were followers around him who memorised, and wrote them down. Till this day, there are millions of huffadh (people who have memorised the entire Quran by the letter), and memorising at least certain portions is incumbent upon all Muslims. Moreover, every year in Ramadan, angel Jibril (AS) would go over the Quran with him (SAWS), which was done twice in the last year before his (SAWS) death. The morality you are supposing is too subjective, and constantly changing. Objective, unifying morality, and reality come from a unifying source: revelation.

But someone doesn't need to worship a god or prophet to be a basic decent human being. I'm not religious, but I'm able to respect my mother perfectly because I have no reason not to. It's very strange and a bit scary when people need religion to behave like a decent person. Forgiveness isn't something trancending at all. When someone does something wrong that will for always affect you, real forgiveness is not justified. You can just go on with your life, but the wrongdoing can never be undone. Like if someone stabs you with a knife, forgiving them would be the last thing you would do. On the other hand, if someone simply lied to you for something small in their own interest. Forgiveness can be given when they understand their own wrongdoing. This is because their mistake doesn't have long lasting consequences for you. It's in the best case a way in which the perpetrator realises its own immoral habits. How can you even in your right mind pretend to have the moral highground by blaming me for nothing at all? I love people who are loving people. Not a violent, child bride raping, victim blaming person who lived about 1400 years ago, who was on his quest to spread the idea that he had spoken to god in order to gain political power. Any person who requests to be given the highest amount of love in order to give guidance, is not worthy of such love.
Secularism isn't about worshipping one's own desires, it is simply about establishing a law and society that treats all people the same regardless of religion and a law that isn't based on beliefs such as forcing women to cover their heads or banning pre-marital sex or criticism of religious beliefs. Instead, the laws are based on more pervasive moral principles such as honesty, respect for other people, treatment of all people equally in front of the law, preventing exploitation of people in the name of religious authority, freedom of speech and belief, etc. Considering the example of LGBTQ campaigns that you mentioned, the media simply emphasizes that people from such communities are not harming anyone by following their desires, and therefore there is nothing wrong with what they're doing. Where the media and society gets bigoted, is when they try to force down certain beliefs dowm people's throats without giving people the chance to question them or educate themselves about it.

It's in the name, a-theism, a is the prefix, to mean without. Without theism. It is not a faith, it is the absence of faith. An analogy that may help - in a court of law, someone is found not guilty. Importantly, this is not the same as being found innocent, it just means the evidence to prove guilt is not there. Also, to say Sharia Law, is just like saying "law law", I know it is common colloquially, just thought I'd raise it as a sidenote. Hope this helps resolve the confusion.

I can see where you're coming from, but I have to say it's a bit of a stretched assumption to say that "secular" minded people are operating solely in accordance with their own desires. Certainly it must be stated that ALL people have secular ideas and values alongside any religious conceptions they may or may not have. There's nothing religious in your preference for one model of car over another, but certainly there can be more entering into that decision than your mere desires. For example, I might choose to buy a pick up truck in response to the demands of my job, or one might elect to buy a minivan rather than a sports car(even though they may have a stronger desire for the sports car) to meet the necessities of family life. Additionally, insofar as secularism is present as a legal philosophy in any given society, while the direction of certain legislative actions may align with the desires of certain individuals within that society, in general the ideal case would be that the central impetus behind the legislation is the preservation, protection or adminstration of individual and collective rights, as opposed to a mere reactionary response to any given individual's personal whims. Of course, broadly speaking secularism creates an environment wherein individuals are by and large, more free to pursue their personal desires than in any other system of social organization. However, it must also be recognized that this moves in both directions, and individuals are equally free to structure their lives in accordance with their own religious and spiritual ideals, and that these are accordingly, equally personal decisions, ultimately subject to the same essential forces as their irreligious contemporaries. Namely: the interaction between lifelong conditioning and a sovereign individual will. Most people are born into their religions, but all people must choose to stay with their religion, change it, abandon it all together, or if they were raised without one, as I was, either choose to adopt one or not to. The key difference between secular philosophy and other forms of organization is the degree to which the external society should be expected to favour, discourage and/or impose any given choice or set of choices on the individual members of the society. Given that you are a member of a faith that carries the belief that each of us is created with a sovereign will and must thereafter choose whether or not to subject that will to another, higher will(Allah's) and follow the precepts laid out via a prophetic lineage, it seems to me that secularism as a political philosophy need not be viewed as necessarily oppositional to your faith in any special way.
Because of Europe's bad historical experience with "religion" i.e Christianity, they had to secularise and even borrow science from the Islamic world. They preach their historical experience of religion, such as "religion versus science" as a global absolutism when really this was just limited to medieval Europe. Islamic history undermines their secular principles as the Muslim world did not have a negative religious experience which is why there was never a secular indigenous revolution internally within the Muslim world - instead it was imposed externally by colonial secular powers. Secular morals such as political correctness and LGBT issues are the morals imposed by the establishment via the Media. The Media, like the Church before it, is nothing more than a means of influencing public opinion and indoctrination. Like the Church used to use terms like "righteous" to praise people and "sinful" to condemn communities but today, Secular media and religion uses new words such as "backward" and "tolerant/modern". Secular religion is guilty of all the points it throws at traditional religion.

instead of looking for morality in "yourself" look for it outside of "yourself" i.e you should take a cognitivist stance with religious/moral language which means "good" is something out there in the world rather then a non-cognitivist stance where when you say "it would be good to do that" all you mean is "you should do that" then you will realise what morality and ethics of religion is about.
An atheist believes that there is no God. A secular person may follow a religion or believe in God but their life is not dictated by the rules of religion or with God conciousness.

Jews, Christians, and Muslims should support one another to uphold conservative values that prioritize family and the worship of God. Medieval thinking. My belief in secularism isn't about desires. It's about an enlightened rationalization that humans disagree. Religious humans REALLY disagree. But some time ago, stewards of peace came up with this idea that said "Let's keep religion out of public life. That way, no one should feel oppressed". With secularism, we can agree to disagree with no fear of retribution or violence, as in the time of Mohammed after he left Mecca. Now in 2020, secularism is the road that multi-culturalism drives on SAFELY. It's how things will be in the west. If you don't like this peaceful approach to public life, ISIS would love to have you.
In the Islamic understanding of religion, Secularism is definitely one. The word Deen can mean what one follows, beliefs, or is obligated to. The Quran even uses it to refers to a king's law. _...Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother _*_within the religion of the king_*_ except that Allah willed..._ *(Quran 12:76)* In Western tradition, definitions of religions can be categorized into two types; Essentialist/Substantalist (focus on one/two essential characteristics and features, such as reacting to what is 'sacred'/'divine' or belief in supernatural/transcendent/non-human existence), and Functionalist (focus on psychological or social effect of religion). If the definition is very narrow there will be obvious counter-examples most will agree are religions, if it is very broad then many ideologies and philosophies would count as one. Unless we are talking about a narrow definition which denies the existence of non-theistic religions, then it is very easy to argue that Liberal Secularism is in fact a religion. You can find plenty of Humanists, who hold views very similar to vocal and mainstream proponents of Secularism, expressing their hope that the 'Humanist religion' (Religion de l'Humanité) will one day become the world religion, and Humanism has legal recognized as a non-theistic religion. What happens with Secualrism is a materalistic interpretation of man's purpose, and selecting this materalistic interpretation to manage and arbiter politics and public affairs. George Holyoake known as the Father of Secularism (the guy coined the term) defines Secularism as: _Secularism accepts no authority but that of Nature, adopts no methods but those of science and philosophy, and respects in practice no rule but that of the conscience, illustrated by the common sense of mankind._ *(Pirnciples of Secularims)* Graeme Smith, a Professor of Public Theology, provides an other definition: _Secularism is a way of thinking about the world and life which makes no reference to supernatural beliefs. Obviously this entails a rejection of religious beliefs. The world, and our life upon it, are to be examined, reflected upon and studied without reference to anything beyond what can be known by human beings here and now. It is a way of life or interpretation of life which only refers to the natural order, never the supernatural._ *(A Short History of Secularism)* Garrett Sheldon, a Professor of Political Science, defined Secularism as: _A philosophy or worldview that emphasizes worldly, human (“secular”), as opposed to spiritual or religious, perspectives in explaining society and politics. Often referred to as HUMANISM, a secular approach dismisses or ignores God, the divine, the supernatural, and other religious viewpoints when discussing or participating in politics._ *(Encyclopedia of Political Thought)* --- In short, Secularism is a principle that denies the authority of all that is non-human or non-transcendent in managing human affairs, based on the belief that the human mind/desire is the only basis to determine truth and morality in this world. Also, another note is that it is very well-documented that different cultures in history had their own concepts of gender, sex, and sexuality. Islam is not based on the 'sexual orientation' social construction or such, nor does it classify people into "straight/heterosexual" or "gay/homosexual". All societies regulate the expression of certain sexual desires into behavior, based on their own theories of human nature and sexual morality (which Islam is very through on). The thing is that Secular Liberalism completely lacks a metaphysical basis and is based on nothing and cannot stand under scrutiny. At least post-modernists are honest enough to acknowledge this epistemological failure. Progressives today like to present a ridiculous and unfounded ethnocentric, self-aggrandizing, and historically revisionist narrative. It is very similar to Feminism's "Patriarchy" which was historically used to justify imperialism. It goes something like this: _[For many thousands of years, among countless of cultures which, people with our category and concept of LGBTQ++ have been subjugated and oppressed. Only recently were they freed by us. Since we are the most moral, most enlightened, and smartest people of all time, only we were clear-minded and brave enough to discover this oppression and stop it. Yes you can make laws out of what you belive in whether its Islam or christianity or anything, secularism means not one religious groups take control of the state or part of it, if you are a Muslim yo can elect someone to represent your values, in the US gay marriage was debated and then the elected president decided, in Saudi Arabia you cant do that, someone who is Christian or a jew isnt represented in that government and therefore he is at risk. Allah the Exalted said, أَفَرَأَيْتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ إِلَهَهُ هَوَاهُ ... Have you seen him who takes his own lust as his god, who abides by his lust, and whatever his lust portrays as good he implements it, and whatever his lust portrays as evil, he abandons it! Allah's statement, ... وَأَضَلَّهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى عِلْمٍ ... And Allah left him astray with knowledge, has two meanings. - One of them is that Allah knew that this person deserves to be misguided, so He left him astray. - The second meaning is that Allah led this person astray after knowledge reached him and the proof was established before him. The second meaning includes the first meaning, but not the opposite. Allah said, ... وَخَتَمَ عَلَى سَمْعِهِ وَقَلْبِهِ وَجَعَلَ عَلَى بَصَرِهِ غِشَاوَةً ... and sealed his hearing and his heart, and put a cover on his sight. so he does not hear what benefits him, understands not what would lead him to the guidance and sees not the evidence with which he can be enlightened. This is why Allah said, ... فَمَن يَهْدِيهِ مِن بَعْدِ اللَّهِ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ﴿٢٣﴾ Who then will guide him after Allah? Will you not then remember? Allah said in a similar Ayah, مَن يُضْلِلِ اللَّهُ فَلاَ هَادِيَ لَهُ وَيَذَرُهُمْ فِى طُغْيَـنِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ Whomsoever Allah sends astray, none can guide him; and He lets them wander blindly in their transgressions. (7:186).
"But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah ? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people" [28:50]

What Al-Khidr did certainly will look brutal and merciless if you had no knowledge of the future and the unknown that is why even Prophet Moses PBUH which as like many other Prophets Atheist always questions their moralities was furious about what Al-Khidr did and lost it "[Moses] said, "Have you killed a pure soul for other than [having killed] a soul? You have certainly done a deplorable thing." [18:74] , then Al-Khidr explain the reason behind it "that he was gonna torment his parents and turn evil and by killing his as a child he is pure and shall enter heaven without judgment"and all the other actions he did before that looked evil before like making a hole in the poor people boat and building the wall over the kids home.

Very true, and even in Indonesia, a muslim majority country, this happens too. We can see in social medias, people comment on religion as "Arabic" or "Backwards" or say "Go ride your camel" and the likes. While those who follow their desires, are viewed as "progressive" or "modern". And sadly, these people who comment on religion are university students, educated people.. Of course this is not an absolute case (not every educated person are like this here of course), but more and more of these kind of people pops up everywhere, and they voice their thoughts in every channel/media.
These people are thinking backwards. They see the truth as falsehood, and strive against it. And they see falsehood as truth, and strive to it.
There is so little ta'zhiim for religion in the medias today..

And sadly also, I found the cure (radd/refutations) for most of the syubhat and syahwat I found being spread on people here, in channels/lectures that talks about misguidance in the West.. like on university issues, western ideologies, secularism, feminism, and the likes.
That shows how true the hadith that says the ummah will follow the sunnah of Rome and Persia/Christians and Jews.. to the point that we in muslim societies have the same "diseases" that they have.

Especially when most people don't have a good reason to believe that this deity exists. For example: the Quran is supposed to be the exact word of Allah revealed to Muhammad (a merchant in Mecca) and would be the message from Allah for the whole of humanity. If the whole of humanity was supposed to hear this message, why was it then only revealed to one person in Mecca? Why didn't the angel Jibriel also reveal the word of Allah to other people in other continents, so everyone was informed and shouldn't only rely on hearsay?
With the importance of its message (how to live life so you won't burn in hell for eternity), the method of its revelation seems a bit unreliable and a bit unfair towards everyone not living in the middle east. With this method of revalation, it was also very easy to adjust the words to make it fit someone's else agenda. This could be Muhammad himself, or someone who wrote down his words because he couldn't write himself. To remember the whole quran word by word, as revealed by the angel in the cave to be written down later on by other people, Muhammad must have had superhuman memory. Nobody is able to remember that much text word for word. This makes me believe that Muhammad actually made it up himself. Maybe he did really believe that he was a prophet, but I think that would be just like people nowadays who think that they can talk with ghosts. They really believe themselves too, but with tests it can be shown that they simply project their own spiritual thoughts and assumptions on this abstract idea of a ghost.
I do agree with you that some people have really low and silly desires. Just look at all the nonsense on TV and pointless luxury products. But some people have larger desires that actually serve a greater good (the whole humanity), while not being religious. They often have a humanistic worldview, which is based on undogmatic moral reasoning.

Plenty prophets were sent to guide all the tribes, and nations. Some listened, but most people didn't listen, and were antagonistic. I think the wisdom behind revealing the Quran to a certain group is that these people were more receiving of the guidance; as for other tribes/nations around their reception of the message might not have been the same. That's just from what I think, Allah knows best.
Also, someone who hasn't received the message isn't accountable for what they don't know. On the other hand, we have been given the ability to think, so the least expected of someone is to have acknowledged their Creator, as it is in our fitrah (innate predisposition), and reject the worship of others aside from Him. The surrounding society/culture/religion(s) of a person often corrupt this fitrah.
The ayat (verses of the Quran) of revelation didn't need to be memorised by Prophet Muhammad (SAWS), instead it was like writing into a ROM. Allah lifted him from the responsibility of memorisation. Even if he (SAWS) did (and he didn't), there were followers around him who memorised, and wrote them down. Till this day, there are millions of huffadh (people who have memorised the entire Quran by the letter), and memorising at least certain portions is incumbent upon all Muslims. Moreover, every year in Ramadan, angel Jibril (AS) would go over the Quran with him (SAWS), which was done twice in the last year before his (SAWS) death.
The morality you are supposing is too subjective, and constantly changing. Objective, unifying morality, and reality come from a unifying source: revelation.

But someone doesn't need to worship a god or prophet to be a basic decent human being. I'm not religious, but I'm able to respect my mother perfectly because I have no reason not to. It's very strange and a bit scary when people need religion to behave like a decent person. Forgiveness isn't something trancending at all. When someone does something wrong that will for always affect you, real forgiveness is not justified. You can just go on with your life, but the wrongdoing can never be undone. Like if someone stabs you with a knife, forgiving them would be the last thing you would do. On the other hand, if someone simply lied to you for something small in their own interest. Forgiveness can be given when they understand their own wrongdoing. This is because their mistake doesn't have long lasting consequences for you. It's in the best case a way in which the perpetrator realises its own immoral habits.
How can you even in your right mind pretend to have the moral highground by blaming me for nothing at all?
I love people who are loving people. Not a violent, child bride raping, victim blaming person who lived about 1400 years ago, who was on his quest to spread the idea that he had spoken to god in order to gain political power. Any person who requests to be given the highest amount of love in order to give guidance, is not worthy of such love.
Secularism isn't about worshipping one's own desires, it is simply about establishing a law and society that treats all people the same regardless of religion and a law that isn't based on beliefs such as forcing women to cover their heads or banning pre-marital sex or criticism of religious beliefs. Instead, the laws are based on more pervasive moral principles such as honesty, respect for other people, treatment of all people equally in front of the law, preventing exploitation of people in the name of religious authority, freedom of speech and belief, etc.
Considering the example of LGBTQ campaigns that you mentioned, the media simply emphasizes that people from such communities are not harming anyone by following their desires, and therefore there is nothing wrong with what they're doing. Where the media and society gets bigoted, is when they try to force down certain beliefs dowm people's throats without giving people the chance to question them or educate themselves about it.

An analogy that may help - in a court of law, someone is found not guilty. Importantly, this is not the same as being found innocent, it just means the evidence to prove guilt is not there.
Also, to say Sharia Law, is just like saying "law law", I know it is common colloquially, just thought I'd raise it as a sidenote.

It seems to be the defining characteristic of your ideology and I feel any other debate topic would probably lead back to religion.
I can see where you're coming from, but I have to say it's a bit of a stretched assumption to say that "secular" minded people are operating solely in accordance with their own desires. Certainly it must be stated that ALL people have secular ideas and values alongside any religious conceptions they may or may not have. There's nothing religious in your preference for one model of car over another, but certainly there can be more entering into that decision than your mere desires. For example, I might choose to buy a pick up truck in response to the demands of my job, or one might elect to buy a minivan rather than a sports car(even though they may have a stronger desire for the sports car) to meet the necessities of family life. Additionally, insofar as secularism is present as a legal philosophy in any given society, while the direction of certain legislative actions may align with the desires of certain individuals within that society, in general the ideal case would be that the central impetus behind the legislation is the preservation, protection or adminstration of individual and collective rights, as opposed to a mere reactionary response to any given individual's personal whims. Of course, broadly speaking secularism creates an environment wherein individuals are by and large, more free to pursue their personal desires than in any other system of social organization. However, it must also be recognized that this moves in both directions, and individuals are equally free to structure their lives in accordance with their own religious and spiritual ideals, and that these are accordingly, equally personal decisions, ultimately subject to the same essential forces as their irreligious contemporaries. Namely: the interaction between lifelong conditioning and a sovereign individual will. Most people are born into their religions, but all people must choose to stay with their religion, change it, abandon it all together, or if they were raised without one, as I was, either choose to adopt one or not to. The key difference between secular philosophy and other forms of organization is the degree to which the external society should be expected to favour, discourage and/or impose any given choice or set of choices on the individual members of the society. Given that you are a member of a faith that carries the belief that each of us is created with a sovereign will and must thereafter choose whether or not to subject that will to another, higher will(Allah's) and follow the precepts laid out via a prophetic lineage, it seems to me that secularism as a political philosophy need not be viewed as necessarily oppositional to your faith in any special way.

The way extreme secularism try to marginalize Religion or even eradicate it shows clearly that the former is a form of religion to it's adherents.
Because of Europe's bad historical experience with "religion" i.e Christianity, they had to secularise and even borrow science from the Islamic world. They preach their historical experience of religion, such as "religion versus science" as a global absolutism when really this was just limited to medieval Europe. Islamic history undermines their secular principles as the Muslim world did not have a negative religious experience which is why there was never a secular indigenous revolution internally within the Muslim world - instead it was imposed externally by colonial secular powers. Secular morals such as political correctness and LGBT issues are the morals imposed by the establishment via the Media. The Media, like the Church before it, is nothing more than a means of influencing public opinion and indoctrination. Like the Church used to use terms like "righteous" to praise people and "sinful" to condemn communities but today, Secular media and religion uses new words such as "backward" and "tolerant/modern". Secular religion is guilty of all the points it throws at traditional religion.

instead of looking for morality in "yourself" look for it outside of "yourself" i.e you should take a cognitivist stance with religious/moral language which means "good" is something out there in the world rather then a non-cognitivist stance where when you say "it would be good to do that" all you mean is "you should do that" then you will realise what morality and ethics of religion is about.

Jews, Christians, and Muslims should support one another to uphold conservative values that prioritize family and the worship of God. Despite our differences there is a lot of overlap esp when compared to the mainstream narrative of consumerism. I'm not against secularism per se. I understand the terms but agree with what you said there is a pseudo religion of "Secularism" that can't be questioned or disputed esp in mainstream culture or politics.

Medieval thinking. My belief in secularism isn't about desires. It's about an enlightened rationalization that humans disagree. Religious humans REALLY disagree. But some time ago, stewards of peace came up with this idea that said "Let's keep religion out of public life. That way, no one should feel oppressed". With secularism, we can agree to disagree with no fear of retribution or violence, as in the time of Mohammed after he left Mecca. Now in 2020, secularism is the road that multi-culturalism drives on SAFELY. It's how things will be in the west. If you don't like this peaceful approach to public life, ISIS would love to have you.

In the Islamic understanding of religion, Secularism is definitely one. The word Deen can mean what one follows, beliefs, or is obligated to. The Quran even uses it to refers to a king's law.
_...Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother _*_within the religion of the king_*_ except that Allah willed..._ *(Quran 12:76)*
In Western tradition, definitions of religions can be categorized into two types; Essentialist/Substantalist (focus on one/two essential characteristics and features, such as reacting to what is 'sacred'/'divine' or belief in supernatural/transcendent/non-human existence), and Functionalist (focus on psychological or social effect of religion). If the definition is very narrow there will be obvious counter-examples most will agree are religions, if it is very broad then many ideologies and philosophies would count as one.
Unless we are talking about a narrow definition which denies the existence of non-theistic religions, then it is very easy to argue that Liberal Secularism is in fact a religion. You can find plenty of Humanists, who hold views very similar to vocal and mainstream proponents of Secularism, expressing their hope that the 'Humanist religion' (Religion de l'Humanité) will one day become the world religion, and Humanism has legal recognized as a non-theistic religion.
The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy suggests this general definition:
_A religion involves a communal, transmittable body of teachings and prescribed practices about an ultimate, sacred reality or state of being that calls for reverence or awe, a body which guides its practitioners into what it describes as a saving, illuminating or emancipatory relationship to this reality through a personally transformative life of prayer, ritualized meditation, and/or moral practices like repentance and personal regeneration._

Separation of church and state is non-sensical; as you cannot separate man's purpose from man's affairs. What happens with Secualrism is a materalistic interpretation of man's purpose, and selecting this materalistic interpretation to manage and arbiter politics and public affairs.

Garrett Sheldon, a Professor of Political Science, defined Secularism as:
_A philosophy or worldview that emphasizes worldly, human (“secular”), as opposed to spiritual or religious, perspectives in explaining society and politics. Often referred to as HUMANISM, a secular approach dismisses or ignores God, the divine, the supernatural, and other religious viewpoints when discussing or participating in politics._ *(Encyclopedia of Political Thought)*

In short, Secularism is a principle that denies the authority of all that is non-human or non-transcendent in managing human affairs, based on the belief that the human mind/desire is the only basis to determine truth and morality in this world.
Also, another note is that it is very well-documented that different cultures in history had their own concepts of gender, sex, and sexuality. Islam is not based on the 'sexual orientation' social construction or such, nor does it classify people into "straight/heterosexual" or "gay/homosexual". All societies regulate the expression of certain sexual desires into behavior, based on their own theories of human nature and sexual morality (which Islam is very through on).
The thing is that Secular Liberalism completely lacks a metaphysical basis and is based on nothing and cannot stand under scrutiny. At least post-modernists are honest enough to acknowledge this epistemological failure.
Progressives today like to present a ridiculous and unfounded ethnocentric, self-aggrandizing, and historically revisionist narrative. It is very similar to Feminism's "Patriarchy" which was historically used to justify imperialism. It goes something like this:

Yes you can make laws out of what you belive in whether its Islam or christianity or anything, secularism means not one religious groups take control of the state or part of it, if you are a Muslim yo can elect someone to represent your values, in the US gay marriage was debated and then the elected president decided, in Saudi Arabia you cant do that, someone who is Christian or a jew isnt represented in that government and therefore he is at risk. Allah's statement,
... وَأَضَلَّهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى عِلْمٍ ...
And Allah left him astray with knowledge,
has two meanings.
- One of them is that Allah knew that this person deserves to be misguided, so He left him astray.
- The second meaning is that Allah led this person astray after knowledge reached him and the proof was established before him.
The second meaning includes the first meaning, but not the opposite.
Allah said,
... وَخَتَمَ عَلَى سَمْعِهِ وَقَلْبِهِ وَجَعَلَ عَلَى بَصَرِهِ غِشَاوَةً ...
and sealed his hearing and his heart, and put a cover on his sight.
so he does not hear what benefits him, understands not what would lead him to the guidance and sees not the evidence with which he can be enlightened.
This is why Allah said,
... فَمَن يَهْدِيهِ مِن بَعْدِ اللَّهِ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ﴿٢٣﴾
Who then will guide him after Allah? Will you not then remember?
Allah said in a similar Ayah,
مَن يُضْلِلِ اللَّهُ فَلاَ هَادِيَ لَهُ وَيَذَرُهُمْ فِى طُغْيَـنِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ
Whomsoever Allah sends astray, none can guide him; and He lets them wander blindly in their transgressions. (7:186).
