- Three floorplans, three techniques, and one video down for Build Like a Nerd Season Two! This month (as my health and child allow) I will be once again uploading a new in-depth tutorial daily. I have a list already, but if you have a suggestion I would love to add it to the schedule if I can. Starting off with floor plans seemed like a good idea since I mention copying floor plans regularly in these videos. If you find this video awesome, please leave a like and let me know what style you would like to see covered!

thank you so much!!! was tryin to figure out the math and I'm so bad at it lol
That's really helpful! You once explained why it's the 32 inches and this was a revelation. For anyone who is wondering, 32 inches are 81cm. Calculating with 80cm is just fine 👌
And happy new year to everyone! 🍀 Specially the little drummer ,😊
Thank you! I totally forgot about showing how to convert to metric in the video 🤦🏻♀️ and little drummer man says thanks haha
Oh I didn't expect you to convert at all, I did it for me and thought I share it for convenience 😅 I can follow your videos just fine 😊
You're welcome little drummer man 😃
Omg!!!! Thank you!!! Can you please explain how to calculate with cm?

As someone who's built using floorplans multiple times before, figuring out the dimensions has always been a struggle. So this is a major help. Many thanks and I hope you and the Bean had a Happy New Years!!
Glad I could help, and a happy new year to you and yours as well 💙
Thank you for taking the time to do this! I've played the sims for years but building has never been my strong suite. I really need something to help me visualize what I'm doing for anything to turn out halfway decent, but you're the first builder that I've come across that doesn't knock using blueprints and floorplans. I feel like I can actually use the hoard of pinterest pins I've been collecting and make the buildings actually look good now.
Happy to help! Believe it or not, I used to be one of those people (awkward, I know) because some part of me felt like it was cheating. I know better now 😅 Even if your end goal is 100% original builds, using floorplans is great for learning new techniques and styles. I hope you're able to confidently build through your pin collection 💙
I typically use already existing blueprints when I build, I can’t really imagine an entire house plan/layout so having something to work from is very important to me. I typically use the roof, the room dimensions (roughly) and then make it up from my imagination. I tend to use the size of the fridge/stove on the floor plan as a size indicator, since that’s one tile in game. Sometimes I have to make things bigger just so the sims can walk around properly.
She's back! Furnish like a nerd would also be so fun =)
I have no idea how that video would work but I wasn't sure about this series either so I guess it's worth a shot 🤷🏻♀️
If anyone is capable of doing deep dives into furnishing styles like "mid century" or "modern"... :P
I just want to say thank you i will be watching in the near future on the roofs cause i do have a hard time with them. thanks again
Yeah, when I'm building I sometimes make rooms way too big. Only when I'm making something that references something in my memory though, rather than something which references something real. I am totally going to use the measure by measure style you showed here! That seems amazing and I really want to experiment with building from floorplans. :)
Building like a nerd series is my favorite. ❤ Also, how have I been playing since the Sims 1 and never knew the tile was 32"? That's a game changer cause I LOVE building from floorplans. I remember being a teen and buying house plan books specifically for the sims. 😅❤❤❤
I don't know if there is an "official" number, but it's what works best for me so I'm hoping it helps others, too! Thanks so much for the comment and happy building 💙
Thank you so much for this
I’ve had a sudden urge to want to play sims again but I just want to build but I’m better at decorating than actually making a design. I thought doing a floor plan would help but I just didn’t know how to start
I'm glad this could help! Thanks so much for the comment 💙
I'm trying to redecorate my apartment using the sims and this has been SO helpful! Thanks so much!!
You're welcome!
Omg this helped me so much. I actually used your method with a floor plan and my house wasn't huge😊
Fantastic! I'm so glad this video was helpful, and enjoy your not awkwardly gigantic house 💙
Thank you for making this, I keep it in a little playlist for when I'm stuck on a build
You're welcome! I'm glad it's been helpful 💙
Omg thank you so much. You are now officially my fav sims builder from now on.
You're so welcome, and thank you 💙💙💙
I got so excited when I got the notification for this video lol it’s great
Yay! Glad you enjoyed it 💙
I just found your channel and I’m LOVING this video.
Welcome! I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos!
Ok, I know it sounds daft, but I hadn’t ever thought of the “open” end of a half hipped roof *just being valid as a gable* 😮 to my brain, it was only ever an unfinished side to be hidden inside another roof piece. 🤯
I enjoyed watching your videos. I can build from a floor plan no problem but I like to build homes I use to live in.. Like the homes I grew up in so I have to do my own floor plans and by memory. It takes so long. I had finally got the first house I ever grew up in but then something happened and I lost everything 😢 all my games were gone everything on my computer. We had to restart everything again on my computer. My son had to put something new in it for me. I don’t know much about computers. Now I can play sims4 again and build my house again but I got to get my mind right to do it. I know it’s going to take me forever 😂 I would rather someone else build it and I could just decorate it😂 I use to like building and was pretty good at it but now I’m just not that good anymore 😂 I will save this video so if I need to reference back to it😊❤🏠
I'm so sorry to hear about your computer crashing! I'm glad you're back though, and hopefully this video can help when you're ready to build again. I do know you can look up houses on Zillow and sometimes, if they've been listed recently, the pictures will include a floorplan. It's kinda hard emotionally to see your childhood home again but the floorplan helps, speaking from experience 😅
For house 2, there's DEFINITELY a basement, because you can see a window at ground level on the exterior view.
This was so educational! I will definitely be watching your other videos when I have the time, especially the roofing ones! Lord knows I need help with that😅
Thank you so much and happy New Year!!🥰
Perfect! So glad you're enjoying my videos, and happy new year 💙
I've been looking for a video like this! I love building off floor plans. I'm surprised to hear a grid tile is supposed to be 32". That seems huge compared to a sim. A sim fits nicely in one tile. If you draw a box around a person, it's more like 18-24", which is what I use in my calculations. In terms of doors/windows, 32" makes sense (I believe that is the standard width of a door). Huh. Now I'm thinking they made sims too big. Isn't a sim the same size as a refrigerator? I'm much smaller than my fridge, and I'm not a small person...
There are definitely a lot of problems, no matter what dimension you decide to go with. 24" might make more sense for the Sims in regards to height and overall size, but standard interior doors are 32" (yes I just went and measured to be sure lol) and your average walk-in shower is going to have at least one dimension that's 36" or more 🤷🏻♀️ but the whole point of this channel is I take things way too seriously, so I'm going to stick with my 32" probably forever lol
So I think I worked out the cm / m part. I hope it helps and I hope it works because math is not my thing.
For example: one room is 6 x 5 m.
One tile is 81 cm, so around 80 cm.
So that means you can go two ways with the 6 m wall:
- 600 cm : 80 cm = 7,5 tiles so I think round it up to 8 tiles(or 7 idk for sure)
- 6 m : 0,8 m = 7,5 tiles. So I also believe 8 tiles
The 5 m one.
5 m : 0,8 m = 6,25 tiles so 6 tiles.
I hope this helps. Please if this is not correct, feel free to correct this! I’m trying to help and to help myself too. 🙏🏽😊
81cm is right! I'm so used to feet and inches I didn't think to run the conversions in metric as well but I hope the information still helped💙
@@sahm_and_bean ooh that’s okay! I mostly use american plans, so this was REALLY helpful! Thank you for the video😍
“Nope, that’s worse, never mind.” Big mood 😂
It was extremely helpful, thank you very much 💕
Im trying to design a few houses im interested in to see how i could redesign them
Oh, I love doing that with real estate listings lol
I am absolutly bad with Math so I was a bit confused as to why you multiply all the rooms with 12? And if I build after any floorplan, would I always Multiply it with 12?
All in all, great Video and helps me a lot to finally build all those Floorplants that sit in my bookmarks since forever. :D
It's to convert the feet to inches. Since every foot is 12 inches, you'd have to multiply the feet by 12 to get the right number of inches. There are other ways to get to the answer, but I felt like working in just inches was best for this video.
@@sahm_and_bean ooo I get it! I am EU based so I use metric-system :D
This helps a lot as most of the Floorplans use the US System. Thank you so much for explaining!
Oh, metric is so much easier! I wish we used it but also the headache to switch systems at this point almost isn't worth it.
@@sahm_and_bean yea I can imagine!
where did she get plus 6 and plus 8 im confused
It's been a minute since I made this video so I'm not sure. What's the time code? If I can watch it back maybe I can fill in some gaps here.
thank you I found a house I really liked and I just can't understand how to convert it to the sims 4
Hopefully this helps!
I know it’s gonna sound dumb but what about a layout that doesn’t have measurements. How would I come to measure that?
Not dumb at all! Usually there's something you can use for a general scale, like doors or kitchen appliances. Start there and see how far you can get. If there's really nothing, then at that point I'd use it more for layout inspiration than a copy-it-verbatim floor plan
@@sahm_and_bean I was checking the layout again, and it says 749 square feet how do I measure that? The reasoning is this is going to be my first apartment and would like to have a plan in mind
Ohh, I see. Each tile is about 7 square feet (32" ≈ 1.7ft, and 1.7ft^2 ≈7sqft)
Edit: so to finish out the equation, take your 749sqft and divide it into 7sqft to get 107 tiles. If you have tiny living that can easily help you count up to 100 tiles, although unfortunately it stops counting after that.
@@sahm_and_bean thanks so much you have been a lot of help
are there any good websites for floor plans ?
Check out the links in the video description!
The architectural designs website is the best in my opinion
