- Bike thieves are a big problem across the United States. We tested how long it would take for a thief to snatch a pricey bike. We loaned a $2,500 Trek mountain bike and security expert Jason Cecchettini planted hidden GPS and radio tracking device. We locked the bike to a signpost and soon enough, a man used a wire cutter to break the lock and take off with the bike. A wild chase ensued through the streets of North Hollywood. Using the tracking devices, we followed the thief and confronted him. #InsideEdition

Wish there were many cops actually doing this undercover work for us to have a safe place - Especially here in the Netherlands, if random bicycles were monitored and changed(so they don't spot them) then the thieves of bicycles would be either behind bars or think twice before stealing it

It makes sense to have some urgency in case of every common crime they could do something about. Any common crime is likely attached to an organized crime system which could be connected to any other crime in the area which nobody has evidence to exclude them.
And what if those thieves have a gun? Cops lose their life over a couple grand?

It's a lock. All locks can be defeated. A lock screams "NOT YOUR PROPERTY, DO NOT TAKE", not "steal me". This applies to all locks, not just expensive locks.

I just had my motorized bike stolen 5 days ago and owned it for 13 years. Was in a garage hiding behind my Honda Civic, and some punks unplugged the opener, disconnected the opener from the garage door link, backed the bike out around the car, hit the drivers side mirror and stole my hard earned ride. Now, a new bike is locked with 3/16" chain to a floor jack and 2 jackstands and also has a cutproof U bar lock on it. I hate bike thieves!-John in Texas

It's all about opportunity: if someone sees an unlocked bike, they might get tempted and steal it. But, all it takes is to have a lock, or even the illusion of a lock, to differenciate between someone who just saw an opportunity, and someone who left their home with the intention of stealing a bike.
Reminds me of what that robber said when a reported asked him WHY he robbed the bank? He replied " Because that's where the money is!" and looked astonished that someone would ask him such a question.
For those who think these were actual scenes, they actually were. This is why you never leave your vehicles unlocked, locked to a certain object, etc.
What is safe, you may ask? Fishing wire is not going to be a 10/10 priority, but it COULD work.
Zip ties, have actually a 5% chance of keeping your vehicle secure. I do not recommend doing it, unless it is an act.
I could obviously be wrong, but just know how much of your stuff, and vehicles, can be stolen, in just a blink of an eye.
