  • I have been watching a lot of Charles Dowding an English horticulturalist and author who has pioneered modern no dig and organic soil management since 1983. He has an excellent RUclips channel showing how to make your own compost for vegetable gardens, ideally digging as little as possible so as not to disturb the soil. Since my Hügelkultur attempts ended in complete failure I am now trying something I hope is more suited to my Vegetable Patch. Fingers crossed for a good winter crop.

You've been putting in the work, and it shows, you'll get your return on that. It's all looking great man.

Wow, what a nice environment, it’s too bad, though, that you have to cover everything, but, gotta do what you have to do. It all looks so lush and healthy, worth all the effort. Composting sure requires a lot of space, I’ve only got 2 bins and end up giving the lion share to the city in my green bin. I will tell you that keeping my leaves from the fall have been the greatest to keep my soil damp, I will never throw them away again, they are golden!

Thanks Nena. I might need to raid some of our inner suburbs that are lined with oak trees and get a trailer full.

Great job Simon, well done buddy, MATE don't get me started on bloody rats around the place, I'm fed to the guts of the stinking things, they just keep coming, you get rid of 2 and 5 take their place, seriously. Good luck with them mate. Seeya Rob

Hmm, decomposing pine bark chews nutrogen from your compost. D'you have lots of coffee grounds to throw in to compensate? ☕
Yiur gardens are looking great. I need to do this style because I live on an island national park. Rock wallabies enjoy salad 😕

Pine bark does indeed. I think from what I have watched once it breaks down with the manure and green waste the result is good for vegies. Fingers crossed. Now Rock Wallabies, that is something I do not have to deal with. Would be a nicer problem to have than rats I think. I would probably grow some crops just for the wallabies.

Did you think of leaving a gap between the boards

Might have to drill some big holes to let the air in. Always the way. When you finish you read it needs ventilation.

We've missed you!! My goodness, talk about extreme measures to keep your gardens protected, wow. I'm so sorry you're having to go to such lengths to try to keep your gardens producing. It's such a shame when all you want to do is supplement your diet with nutritious food and nature continues to work against you. Will the rats burrow under your beds or have you fortified the ground too? I wish you EVERY success with your efforts. I don't know about Aust., but here, things are so expensive a family MUST be able to supplement their diet. If you can afford things, it seems they aren't available. There will be some, with connections, that won't be as hard-hit as others but the rest of us are left with no options. It seems like the world has turned upside down and inside out! I pray your efforts are successful and you and your family stay well. Blessings to you and yours, g.

Why are you adding already composted horse manure?

Straight out of the paddock. Adding to the wood chips and garden waste to make compost.
