- I have noticed a big difference in some of the potting mix bags I have been buying so I thought I would do a test on 5 commonly available mixes.
I have planted out 3 seeds in each pot to see how well they grow in my greenhouse so as similar conditions for each pot as possible.
Scotts Osmocote Premium $12.13
Scotts Performance Naturals $13.28
Seasol Advanced $7.11
Garden Basics Tomato and Veg $4.54
RichGro Black Marvel $10.11
Please keep in mind that this test is specific for my greenhouse and conditions and may not reflect other environments. Seed Quality can also vary.
I have tried to make the conditions as consistent as possible.
I have received no sponsorship for this comparison.
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
I've always believed that you get what you pay for in potting mixes too.
😉
try using 50% or more river sand in mix. all the bagged so called potting mixes are almost all wood/bark. besides the fact that plants arent supposed to grow in bark, all that organic matter either dries out too easily, becoming hydrophobic, or it can become a smelly wet mess, especially for perenials.
Thank u for this video, i was confused to buy soil from Bunnings warehouse, now this helped me a lot.
Glad it helped. The cheaper ones are pretty crap to be honest. Need a lot of compost to build them into a good soil base.
Hi Simon, with your hanging baskets, I saw a vid on Gardening Australia where Sofie lined the inside of the basket mat with an old potting mix bag turned inside out and snip about 9 holes in the bottom for drainage but it stops the basket liner from drying out too quick. I haven't tried this myself she seems to swear by it. Wow I need some catching up to do haha, your place is looking great mate. Seeya Rob
An excellent experiment Simon. Surprised me the difference in stem thickness. I see your lettuce is firing well. Well done mate.
Thanks Les. We even have some tomatoes on the vines in the Green House already. I think the way to go is make the whole backyard a Greenhouse.
Hey Simon! Good to see you. Nice experiment. I guess it just goes to show that you get what you pay for. On the other hand, it doesn't hurt to get what you can afford as long as you keep growing. I don't know what's going on down there, but as we have had a terrible growing season (which has come to an end) and produce is pathetic at best and the price is outrageous!! So, if you want decent veg around here, you need a greenhouse and you need to grow your own. Hope all is well with the family, blessings always, g.
Thanks Gail. The weather has gone a bit crazy for sure. We have endless rain atm which is very unusual for us.
I like your greenhouse.
Thanks. It was my final build after the Shack, Chicken coop, outdoor Kitchen and Pond.
Like most of the eastern states, we’ve had very unseasonal weather here in SE QLD.
I’ve tried most of those potting mixes, but have found Rocky Point Premium to be superior to all of them.
It’s reasonably priced, given its quality, but not available in “Big Green”. It is freely available in independent nurseries.
I’ll not buy Osmocote after being inundated with gnats that grew in the mix.
I’ve not seen that one in Melbourne. Will keep an eye out.
@@simonhahnel8092 I concur with the gnat problem from the Osmocote premium mix. Very annoying when used for indoor plants. I had to check daily for the creamy white larvae on the mix's surface and squash them before they matured. Similar problem with Richgrow's tomato mix.
