  • Last spring was cold and miserable. Our direct sowed seeds did poorly. This season we plan to plant out our seedlings in a new Greenhouse. Now the rats and possums are locked out and we can get a head start in the Greenhouse we may have a better harvest.

The respect you show to your chooks is wonderful to see. They obviously trust you and are completely unfazed by the noise of the drills and tractor. It was also nice to see the cockatoos in the background waiting for their turn.

They are pretty chill. When I was training the dogs not to eat them they were completely clueless. Picked up 3 more today. A Leghorn, Silkie and another ISA Brown. All sleeping in the coop at opposite ends. Was funny to see how the original 4 reacted to the new additions. They would not go near the coop all day. I had to collect them all in the end and load then in. Near dark I then let in the new chickens and there was minimal clucking then all peace and quite. See how they are in the morning will be interesting.

Think I might need to get a few more. They don't help nearly enough.

They love the man with the shovel, it’s interesting too that they’re not bothered at all with the power tools, you’ve taught them well!

They are quite used to my noisy ways. And they do love a shovel, pitch fork and even a garden trowel. No matter how quietly a sneak into the back yard to work they find me almost instantly. Just slows me down a bit. Very entertaining though.

Yep. As soon as I pick up a shovel they appear from everywhere. I think they have ESP.

Haha, the chooks are saying, we can help dad. You must of taken a mortgage out to buy the timber Simon, boy the stuff is expensive these days like everything else. Great job mate, coming together nicely, bee and insect hotels are great, I made a few. Seeya Rob...............I've been thinking of making a bat box for micro bat we get around here for them to roost in away from predators and out of the weather.

I am using fence rails. Cheaper than structural timer so only half a mortgage. We have the small bats here as well. Appear at dusk each night. Lots of hollow trees for them here so should be OK. Just need to sort it out with the parrots.

Ah Simon....... That's a gentle grade compared to the 25-40 deg slope ranging over my mountain property. lol

At least on a steep block you usually have good views from the top.

@@simonhahnel8092 lol True, but GETTING to the top can be a real chore. There's this gully and the climb has to be closer to 60 degrees. Of course I could go the long way around and take the ridge line..

    What is a bee sanctuary?

Somewhere for bees to go and rest when they need to. Think I made a mistake though by gluing in the cane. I just read that you need to remove them to maintain the environment. I have now ordered a Bee Hive. Something new to learn.

I did not know that bees needed breaks too! It will be interesting to see your new hive set up!
