  • A common issue in S55 but can affect N55 too! I was unfortunate enough to be the first one out there with the exhaust camshaft issue in N55. Luckily, this issue was resolved under the warranty but it was a close call.
    Have you ever heard about this issue in N55? Have you experienced it in S55? Please share your experience in the comments!
    I hope you enjoy the video.

    What a hassle you've been through. Nice you did not give up. Lucky everything went well and the car is doing fine. Good job with all chasing.

    My X3 35i N55 has been making this sound for around 2 years ever since I’ve gotten it. Drives me mad in the morning when cold but goes away same as yours. The only videos I’ve found besides this one have inconclusive findings or blame something such as the vacuum pump. Thank you so much for sharing!

    All I can say is that I'm glad you're an N55 M2 owner because you've really done a great job of uncovering things, working on things, modifying things, etc, and I think you're great resource. May it always be so!

      Thanks. I think this isn’t a common fault but I already heard back from a few people that they have the same sound coming from their cars. Luckily it looks like it’s not serious and you can live with it.

    I had a similar issue with crankshaft - not too disimilar to yours but where the car was always making this sound. shavings metal found in the filter etc. I took the car to Evolve in Luton and they diagnosed the problem first time and fixed it for a reasonable price.. highly recommend those guys they are probably the best experienced M car mechanics in the uk mate. cheers

    It's an 09 328i n52. I've had the car 2 years, and this sound just started happening at 130k miles.

    Thank you so much for sharing. I am driving 2011 BMW X3 35i and I am pretty sure I have having the same issue as described. My car has the loud tapping sound every time it warms up from cold and the tapping disappears when oil temperature gets to a certain point. Unfortunately my warranty expires long time ago, I will need to fix myself one day. I have been driving with this issue for 4 years now so I guess it is ok like many BMW services folks claim. Thanks!

      I know you can’t expect from all staff at the dealers to be petrol heads but i can’t stand incompetence and people just not care about client at all. It is a wider issue these days I’m afraid. People don’t appreciate jobs.

    My S55 been doing this for over two years. I had to pay 200€ for the inspection and was basically told it's normal and nothing to care about. I was under warranty then and despite trying to convince them with videos that the sound is abnormal they just said I was hearing the "noisy" injectors. I have a video on my channel if you want to have a listen (Title S55 Tick).

      Definitely the same thing. I’m not sure what are the long term effects but I think eventually the camshaft can be damaged.

      @@MDrivesN55…same as yours. Mines a 2018 M2 LCI.
      What was the mileage when you noticed the tapping?
      I’ve seen another video from BMW Doctor which suggests that the tappety sound is normal for a BMW.
      As for the BMW dealerships, I wouldn’t go near them with my car. Biggest waste of time and total rip off, bunch of lying thieves.
      My car needed an alignment recently, they said my front toe arms were ceased. To which I thought bullshit, as I’ve always sprayed them with wd40 regularly. They wanted £250 per arm and some £400 labour to replace them, in order to carry out a 4 wheel alignment.
      I ended up taking it to Suspension Secrets for their camber plates, solid front control arm bushes and rear toe arms and full fast road alignment…guess what…there was absolutely nothing wrong with the front track rods, as they adjusted as normal, and now the handling is next level.

      @@SuperExige I think it was about 20k. I think people talking about injectors sound as tapping sound. Maybe that causes some confusion.

    I had this issue on my S55 engine on M2Comp 2020. I got a new camshaft on mine. It was very bad BMW said. It was allready a PUMA case from BMW Germany when i had the issue so it got sorted very fast in my case.

    I have a similar sound on my M235i, but the noise it`s much lower then yours, i can hear it only in my garage, outside, nothing can be heard.
    It has around 105k km.
    Just changed the valve cover and VVT motor, if i knew about this, i would have asked the mechanic to retorque the bolts or even purchase new bolts.
    I guess if it isn`t that loud maybe... it`s safe? :)) Although now it will remain on my brain and i have to fix it...

    I’ve had my 2018 M2 LCI from new. Now with 48k mikes on the clock.
    I’ve always changed my oil out at 5k-7K, as well as when the service was due to keep the warranty with BMW.
    I never prescribed to the 10-20k service regime recommended by BMW, as ai wanted to keep this car very longterm and wanted to look after the engine.
    I also did the diff and gearbox oil at 20k…I’m due to flush these again.
    I’ve always waited for the engine to get up to 90degs before I start to explore the rev range.
    I would “like” to think my engine and components are in good shape, with minimal build up of carbon etc wear and and tear considering the regular oil changes.
    I would be interested to know whether the cars exhibiting problems are one owner or a number of owner cars.
    Just curious how previous owners may have looked after the cars, did they allow proper warm up cycle before pressing the loud pedal.
    Maybe none of it is related and it’s just common issues with engine even though the Dealers say it’s not.

      @MDrives  8 месяцев назад +1

      I’m a 4th owner but the first owner had it for almost two years and then it had two shot ones. All services in. I bought it with 13k miles on the clock.

    • @SuperExige
      @SuperExige 8 месяцев назад

      @@MDrives I bought this for my 50th Birthday..to keep…so I wanted new…and not have to wonder how previous owners had driven it. I wanted to drive it and to look after it properly. Regular oil changes and warm up cycle are a must for these engines.
      I’m compiling a list of components to renew now, at 50k-60k…as a precaution and preventative measure, rather than wait for these components to fail. They’re well documented on the net, so I’ve started collecting bits, and will swap them out when the weather gets warmer in the new year, just to give it a midlife refresh ☺️
