Hey, I actually have a Mac Mini on its way to my house right now to use for that exact setup, and I can tell you that Sidecar will almost certainly not be usable as a primary display. However, Luna Display does. It’s an adapter and free software. The adapter retails for $80, but they have 10% off codes all the time. Right now the code is “LIKE-A-PRO”. It even works after a reboot if your device has FileVault turned off. Or, if you leave FileVault on, you can blindly type your password in and set it to open Luna at launch. If you can’t find anyone to tell you more about Sidecar as a primary display, I’m willing to give it a shot once the public betas are out. Just reply to me here if you want me to. (Public betas come out in July)
No One I would love to try this. Can you use your iPad as a main display for your Mac mini using Luna Display? How well does it work with the pencil input? Do you still need to connect a keyboard and mouse to the Mac? Can you use the Folio Keyboard from the iPad to type text? I have so many questions:3
John Mateu In two days when the Luna Display adapter arrives, I’ll answer the ones I can’t now. But here’s what I’ve got for you: *Can you use your iPad as a main display for your Mac Mini using Luna Display: * Yes. Luna advertises this exact setup and gives detailed instructions for setup on their website. There are caveats, though, which I’ll go over. First, you do need a display to set up the Mac Mini. This isn’t an issue if you’ve got a TV, just plug in an HDMI cable and set it up there. You’ll need a keyboard _and_ mouse to set it up. Of course, you can get a cheap mouse and/or keyboard and return them after setup. Luna warned me that some customers report issues with the sleep/wake functionality with a “headless” setup, and so had to disable sleep mode entirely, leaving their Mac unlocked until it loses power, making for a similar security risk as disabling FileVault (more on FileVault below). *How well does it work with pencil input?* Everything I’ve seen has shown it to be fantastic. Not from personal experience yet, of course. But every review video has given Luna the crown for best touch and pencil input. *Do you still need to connect a keyboard and mouse to the Mac? Can you use the Folio keyboard from the iPad to input text?* Well, that depends. Like I said, you need to for setup unless there’s an optio to turn on the accessibility on-screen keyboard during setup, but _after_ that you don’t have to have a mouse, since this can be controlled via touch, Apple Pencil, or an iPhone app like Remote Mouse (makes your phone into a Force Touch Trackpad, basically). If you turn off FileVault, you can use your Smart Keyboard Folio as the only keyboard. But there’s one issue if you leave FileVault on. Since Luna requires a Mac app to run, after a restart or the Mac, you won’t be able to see the screen. You _can_ type your password in blind as long as you have just one user (or perhaps by using keyboard commands first if you’ve got more than one user). But that will only work with a keyboard you can connect over Bluetooth or USB. Since I own a Brydge keyboard for my 2018 iPad Pro, and that supports USB typing, I can leave FileVault on. But unless you buy a different keyboard, you’ll need to disable a pretty important security feature. Without FileVault, your data can be pretty quickly compromised by anyone with physical access to your Mac. Once you’ve signed in for the first time after a reboot, though, then you can use any keyboard connected to your iPad as an input for your Mac. I’m curious to see what keyboard commands you can use though, because some will definitely be preempted by iOS if your keyboard is connected to the iPad instead of the Mac. For example, Alt-Tab will switch apps on the iPad instead of the Mac. I’ll let you know in a few days how the setup works for me. Fingers crossed!
Hello everyone. I already have a Luna Display and I am using it with MacOS Mojave. It works fine but I have some complaints as, I am not able to wake up my Mac using Luna Display and the pencil does not support scrolling. TeamViewer works way better in terms of the ability to wake up. Also Luna does not have any on screen keyboard, which is available in any app. I am not completely satisfied with Luna but I think that with Sidecar, Luna is even necessary anymore. So far I have failed and I hope someone can show me a way to do it. Even after spending $80 on Luna and $129 on the Apple Pencil, it does NOT work.
I did update to Catalina, but the sidecar features is missing. I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro and they never said the sidecar is not compatible with it.
For sure yes. You see the keyboard button on the iPad screen, it is to summon the on screen keyboard on iPad, that mean the input from iPad will be sent to Mac, that means you can type on whatever keyboard connected to the iPad to type in sidecar

My 11" iPad Pro has received more love but now with Sidecar support I will be able to give them both the same attention as it will be a fluid exchange to work on both devices. I can't wait. Thanks for the video. Although I use oversee to view most RUclips videos I've been watching AppleInsider for a while now.
This new feature will make me purchase new Apple hardware. But this video didn't answer my main questions. 1. Can the Apple Pencil (4:31) be used as a generic mouse to click and double click? 2. Will all my 3rd party software work on Sidecar or will only "well behaved apps" run? 3. Will the wireless feature work only over wifi or will it also work over the internet so I can view my macOS apps remotely?
Dang it bruh .. None guide saying that this sidecar only works when it placed side by side. Was wondering why my iPad did nothing unlike his, then I figured out coz I put my iPad on my lap, my MB on laptop standing. It's good utility anyway, just still a bit hard to use and buggy.

It would be awesome if the iPad could pull the Mac screen instead of just having the Mac screen pushed to it like lunar display. This would give you the ability to use the iPad screen as a monitor for the Mac mini without having to first hook the Mac mini up to a separate monitor and mirroring.

Ill definitely be using sidecar for graphic design work. I am excited to see how fast the actual release version will be. I am using Duet display at the moment, but its not completely satisfactory to me since its too slow.
Correct me if I’m wrong but you still have to set the display arrangement. Unless the Mac and iPad has some secret magic going on which they did not tell about in the keynote, that would be awesome though.
How do I get the touchscreen and sound to work on the iPad? I got it working as a 2nd display, but I can't use the iPad function. No sound comes out and when I touch the screen it does nothing.
I have iPadOS for my iPad Pro ..is Catalina necessary on the MacBook or Mojave will do? Don’t want to upgrade my MacBook as I’m afraid of bugs and software compatibility..and I need the MacBook to perform with no issues as I work with it..thanks!
Wireless mode does not provide "imperceptible" lag. From my experience it's pretty janky. Is this because I'm pairing with a late model 2015 iMac and not a new MBP?
Do you know if you have the option to use the Ipad as the ONLY display for your MacBook? so that I can turn off my MacBook display and put it in my bag but work with it on the Ipad?
Hi, do you know how to calibrate iPad Pro or it doesn’t need to calibrate ? I’m work mostly video and photo. Was thinking to get an extra monitor or iPad Pro...
I think it’s quite useful, but there should be perceptible lag or frame drops. If you look to the PC world both Steam and NVIDIA managed to make in house streaming usable for gaming. So this should not be a problem.
I have MacBook Pro and an iPad. I turn on Airdrop on iPad and go to "sidecar" application > both are connected to same iCloud account > I see my picture pop op (iPad) but what to do next??? How to mirror my screen ? Kindly help. It would be much appreciated... Thanks in advance.

I used the Astropad Studio for a year and I must say it is great. Although it just lets you to mirror your mac on your iPad and it’s a bit expensive, but the features like custom short keys and the very small latency are really good. I can't wait! I have a monster iMac pro and just ordered an iPad pro. The goal is to be able to use sidecar so I can use a pencil with the iPad for working but getting the power of the iMac pro.
Will all iPads work, or just the ipad pro?
The latest ones and all the pros get the update, so yes
@@brayanrodriguez7096 how about iPad Mini 4?

Can you hear the sound of the MacBook through the iPad or no?
Thanks, do you know if it uses Wifi Local Network, or it uses the internet traffic for that? I was thinking to use this setup for a live stream, but internet in the location will me quite limited

Is it possible to switch desktops on the iPad itself?
Hi I have an older Mac Book Pro running Catilina 10.15.6 and I can't find my iPad Pro 11" in the display preferences or Air Play drop down's. How can I get it to work. Your video said at the beginning you would cover all aspects of connecting it. Am I missing something?
Can you use it in vertical orientation?
Ill definitely be using sidecar for graphic design work. I am excited to see how fast the actual release version will be. I am using Duet display at the moment, but its not completely satisfactory to me since its too slow.
Correct me if I’m wrong but you still have to set the display arrangement. Unless the Mac and iPad has some secret magic going on which they did not tell about in the keynote, that would be awesome though.
How do I get the touchscreen and sound to work on the iPad? I got it working as a 2nd display, but I can't use the iPad function. No sound comes out and when I touch the screen it does nothing.
But where can you download the new updates?
Also, can it work on a mac ( not a macbook )

Was thinking to get an extra monitor or iPad Pro...
i dont have an ipad
so can i connect my Imac 27 and make my macbook air as a second monitor with catalina?
Is it availble on ipad pro 10.5? Thanks in advance
I think it’s quite useful, but there should be perceptible lag or frame drops. If you look to the PC world both Steam and NVIDIA managed to make in house streaming usable for gaming. So this should not be a problem.
Will this work for older iPad Pro

how to connect/set up iPad (via sidecar feature) so you can work on FCPX on the MacBook and the preview is on the iPad?
i have IPad OS 13 and Mac Catalina installed. I use Mac Air 13" and 5th Generation Ipad. I don't find an option to connect my Ipad when i click on Airplay button at the top. Is there any separate setting for sidecar? Both my devices are connected to same wifi.
I used the Astropad Studio for a year and I must say it is great. Although it just lets you to mirror your mac on your iPad and it’s a bit expensive, but the features like custom short keys and the very small latency are really good. It would be nice to compare sidecar with Astropad ( plus Luna Display).
Why you use libratone zipp 2 instead of homepod? Is the sound better?
im using macbook pro 2015 does it have sidecar?
