  • Street Hawk is an American superhero television series that aired for 13 episodes on ABC in 1985.
    More popular outside of the US the Street Hawk toy history is complicated and includes him sort of being a member of GI Joe!
    From the opening narration:
    Jesse Mach, an ex-motorcycle cop, injured in the line of duty. Now a police troubleshooter, he's been recruited for a top secret government mission to ride Street Hawk -- an all-terrain attack motorcycle designed to fight urban crime, capable of incredible speeds up to three hundred miles an hour, and immense firepower. Only one man, federal agent Norman Tuttle, knows Jesse Mach's true identity. The man...the machine...Street Hawk.

    Wow, I can't believe there were only 13 episodes, I feel like I grew up with this show. 😁I loved Street Hawk's raw, gritty feel. You actually felt like you were there with him and his motorcycle. Knight Rider just didn't have that same appeal even though KITT was super cool of course. Airwolf was by far the coolest vehicle

  • @andrewtaylor940
    @andrewtaylor940 4 года назад +207

    I remember reading that while shows like this, Nightrider and Airwolf had different executive producers/creators, the behind the scenes production houses were the same. Much of the same people were making the shows behind the scenes. Especially the vehicle teams. What killed Streethawk was the unexpected extreme costs. See Nightrider had two hero cars, but the stunt cars were mainly off the shelf Pontiac’s that needed minimal redress for stunt shots. Just some black paint. You didn’t need to see KITT’s unique features in stunt shots. They burned through a stunt car every 1-2 episodes. But they could mostly be salvaged and combined to get one workable car out of every 2-3 destroyed. Airwolf while expensive had very stable predictable costs. Just helicopter fuel and maintenance. Streethawk was burning through 6 motorcycles per episode. Just trashing them. The hero bike was a heavily modified Honda XL500. But because they so tricked it out, they had to put a lot of work into each stunt bike. Swapping the fiberglass body shells took a lot of work. And they stupidly used a base bike that was fairly uncommon, so they were chewing through them faster then they could find them.the fantasy was that the Streethawk bike had three modes, street, off road and super speed. This created a ton of production headaches. They had to keep six bikes prepped because they would fly apart during stunts and need to be reshot. The costs quickly started escalating.

      Thanks for the info! But, while Knight Rider started off cheaper thanks to write-off Trans Ams that couldn't be sold as new for one reason or another, they too eventually ran into a wall of not being able to score cheap cars for stunt shots (one of the reasons for so much model work in season 2 and the first half of 3) and began using a custom stunt rig with just a replica body shell on top.
      I can't imagine the headaches Street Hawk's team dealt with.

    • @andrewtaylor940
      @andrewtaylor940 4 года назад +12

      @@pennygadget7328 I wish I could find it again, but somewhere out there is a video that includes one of the production people talking about how the bikes used to just come apart. They could get maybe one shot out of them. No bike that they ever jumped could be used again and they could barely get usable parts from the carcass.
      Nightrider running out of available cars is kind of mind boggling. I mean the show literally introduced the brand new Pontiac. It was a giant Firebird commercial. It's not like they were hunting old garages in Alabama for a workable Dodge Charger.

    • @pennygadget7328
      @pennygadget7328 4 года назад +9

      @@andrewtaylor940 It wasn't a matter of difficulty so much as sheer cost. There was a bunch of stuff going on re: access to the cars (people in the company didn't want Knight Rider to use their car in case the show flopped and hurt the brand so it was all under-the-table at first) and after it ended up a hit they got great deals on cars that couldn't be legally sold as new (open roofs during a drizzle, the transport carrying them was involved in a fender-bender, etc.) since it was exactly what you said: a big, prime-time commercial. But that well eventually dried up.
      Even with cobbling cars together with the scraps, one of the most common points of damage were twisted chassis thanks to the jumps, forcing them to get replacements. They couldn't afford to buy brand new cars at near-MSRP on the show's budget, thus the re-usable stunt rig was born. :)

      Lassi Kinnunen maybe ‘gently’ used

    • @andrewtaylor940
      @andrewtaylor940 4 года назад +3

      Lassi Kinnunen Part of the problem was KITT was based on the earliest version of the car. By season 2 the production cars were seeing enough significant styling changes that it increased the workload dressing them out. Even if they weren’t 100% accurate to the hero car.

    Street Hawk was syndicated in Indonesia in 1989. I remember watching every episode. Later I learned that it was an attempt by the national channel to compete with the then newly launched, only private channel which had Knight Rider, Airwolf, and MacGyver. The national channel kept buying short syndicated series because they were much cheaper than syndicating more popular, longer series.

    As a kid in the 80's in Ireland, I loved Street Hawk for a whole lot longer than the show aired. I had a Lego Street Hawk in my Lego games. It was just a black bike and a black minifig with black helmet and (oh what a glorious day it was when I got a set that included it) a black visor, but it was my Street Hawk. I have no idea why I loved it so much. Maybe it was just easier to build in Lego than KITT?

    Street Hawk got me the worst spanking of my life: 1985, England, a birthday party had ended, we were waiting for our parents to pick us up so the host put the tv on while we waited... Street Hawk! A show I'd only heard of... a legend! But halfway through my parents turned up. So, being seven years old, I threw a tantrum, demanding that they let me watch the rest. It seems there's no sin worse than embarrassing my mum. On the drive home she and my dad discussed my punishment. By the time I got home I was so scared that I ran upstairs, up my bunkbed and cowered in the corner. But there was no escape.

      NO, it's still not Airwolf because the government wanted Airwolf back, but it was kept hidden by String Hawke. Again, like Toy Galaxy said, Street Hawk was funded, operated, controlled, etc by the Federal govt. There was not hiding Street Hawk because it was made to be mass produced for the Police if is passed the initial tests.
