We talk about return to sport, but in these types of situations the more important thing to focus on is return to life. Even if his legs were amputated I think Tiger would still try to play golf, but let's first let him focus on getting healthy and back to day to day life before speculating on if his career is over
Edit: for those wondering about his recent spine surgeries, part of the initial trauma assessment includes evaluating the spine and neuro status, so they at least check for major injuries. Now certainly a disc or something could have been affected but that wouldn't be top priority during initial trauma eval unless it were causing major neuro problems

Well said Doc, After one of his back surgeries I remember Tiger saying golf was the furthest thing from his mind. He just wanted to get healthy - I'm sure he'll take that same approach & work hard (as always) to obtain that goal.

When I see stuff about not “life threatening,” and compartment syndrome and comminuted long bone fractures, am I just hyper scrutinizing to think of fat embolism and reperfusion problems?

      Brian,
Don’t forget to really emphasize neurovascular compromise. Nerves and blood supply! The P’s. Also the direct insult of the location and type of fracture. Great job though.

If the mind is right, the body will follow. His mind hasn't been right for some time now. He's making mental errors that he never made when he was young. Is anyone talking about him fighting through chronic pain and substance abuse? That's what Tiger needs help with. Golf is probably an escape from reality.

Could you please do a video on the fight between Valdez vs Berchelt that happened last week. Many commentators were saying the fight should have been stopped at the 4th round, but it wasn't. The knockout that ended the fight in round 10 was quite scary. I would appreciate your thoughts on that. Thank you!

Back in university, I had broken my tibea and had a rod inserted in my leg the same day, then a few days later my leg was like twice it's normal size. They discovered I had compartment syndrome and had to slice open my leg to release the pressure.
Due to compartment syndrome, my lower leg had muscle deformity and nerve damage that caused foot drop and hypersensitivity from my foot up throughout my lower leg. Not to mention, the pain was a 10 out of 10. Never hurt so much in my life.
I got rid of the foot drop after a lot of physical therapy, but still don't have full control of my big toe and limited dorsiflexion in my ankle to this day (11 years later).
Compartment Syndrome is very serious. Wishing Tiger the best!

Every surgery (he had over 30) made the pain worse. I've seen it first hand, be careful about your feet. You don't realize how important they are until they're taken away.

Thank you for the explanation of Tiger’s injuries. I wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. It didn’t happen but I still have great interest in these topics. I had shattered my foot in a fall years ago. I understand what recovery feels like. I know Tiger will be given much better care than I ever received. I always liked the man. I watched him acting human before the entire world. He remains a sports hero, to me. I agree, that he will need to focus on well-being first. Our bodies usually tell us how far they will let us go until they let us know that healing takes time. I wish him an excellent recovery. Please stop judging the man.

You said that having to cut through the fascia was concerning to you, but didn’t really explain why it was concerning or the possible risks with that. Could you explain more why needing to cut through the fascia is a big deal? Does it not really heal well? Is he going to have muscle problems later? Is there a risk or nerve damage with pressure build up?

Hyundai's GV80 was put in a live rollover test instead of using lab dummies. And TW was the volunteer driver who was trying to cover 1 hour driving distance on hilly roads in less than 30 minute time! Result: despite the heavily damaged to the engine compartment following impacts to trees and signs, also despite the severity of several rollovers, the rest of the GV80 remains intact. Score: A+++ for its structure and Hyundai should be proud of that!

Good information. Should have went more into detail about faciotomy and how brutal they look. Also he will need a wound vac over the faciotomy for healing. Skin graphs may also be needed. How do I know this? My son was in a head on collision with a drunk 10 years ago. He still can't walk normal and still has pain and loss of feeling. He also is missing 3 ligaments around his knee. Tiger has a long road in front of him. I'm sure he's getting the best specialists available. Unfortunately my son didn't. Search unusual orthopaedic injury hip fracture dislocation of hip Dr. Ebraheim, on RUclips. Thats my son's injuries.

No signs of Woods braking around a dangerous curve, multiple car accidents in his life, and DUI’s. Warning comes before total destruction. Glad he’s alive, but this guy seems to need help, whether spiritual or therapy from substance abuse. Hope he gets what he needs to avoid these perilous situations.
