Burning of the Witch 17:57 (Final Part) She's now on fire, screaming in agony but still angry, and wants whoever burned her, Dead!
9:40 The reason the track becomes "electro rock" as you described is because this particular music plays when you reach an ending safe house and statistics flash up on screen. The "digital" twist to the music is designed to engage the analytical part of your brain in order to make you pay attention to the mathematical feedback the game is giving you so you know what you did well or what you struggled with, allowing you to take this information into account as you play the next round. The same thing happens at 14:16.
@@wesleyward5901 You do realize that there is an analytical part of the brain right? It's called the left brain. The thing of engaging the left side of the brain is that you focus on the analytical parts, accompanied by the "electro rock" type of music and you start focusing more on the information the game gives you. That's at least what it does to me, music is a big part of how you perceive something and how you feel.
@@HoughStone Is it really that difficult to understand? The music at the moments I highlighted has a significant change. It goes from a classic horror soundtrack (strings, piano & choir) to an electronic soundtrack using synthesizers. If you listen carefully you can hear morse code style beeping in the background similar to the digital beeping that accompanies text when it is being auto typed/scrolled on screen (like in text based RPGs). All of this is being done as I said to engage the analytical part of your brain. The horror soundtrack is designed to evoke the EMOTIONAL part of your brain as it creates fear and tension as you play the game. However, when you reach a safehouse and it is time to evaluate your performance during the round by looking at your statistics, the game doesn't need you to be EMOTIONAL, it needs you to be ANALYTICAL. It needs you to stop FEELING and start THINKING. That's why the soundtrack takes a digital twist. When the average human hears digital synth noises it evokes a more objective and logical mindset as we generally connote these noises with technology, data, processing and analysis. I really don't see how this is so difficult to understand. This is basic music theory.
The best part of the song is heading the tank ingame, yeah. The song really REALLY does a good job at conveying "impending danger" but when the impending danger can be heard OVER the song its just perfect
0:22 - The main menu theme. 3:53 - Plays when the Tank (boss enemy that randomly spawns) starts chasing you. 6:40 - Plays when a Tank spawns in the final run to the rescue vehicle. 9:20 - Plays when at least one survivor makes it to the rescue vehicle and the credits (game stats) roll. 14:16 - Plays when at least one survivor makes it to the saferoom (the transition between chapters in a campaign). In game, these soundtracks don't transition abruptly like in the video. 15:41 - Plays when the Witch (another boss enemy that randomly spawns) spawns but is currently just crying in place, minding her own business. 16:16 - Plays when she chases a survivor that startles her by getting too close, shining the flashlight on her or hurting her. 17:57 - Plays when the witch is on fire, she will chase the survivor that set her on fire regardless of who startled her.
Pretty much why I could not and never will get into L4D2. The tones are completely different between the two games. Starts with the very fact L4D doesnt have a single day time map. And I despise the characters. L4D characters felt authentic. L4D2 characters are so stereotyical (and written so) that they feel cringe.
@@ItsKatsuragi L4D1 has no daytime campaigns? Blood Harvest literally takes place while the sun is rising, and The Sacrifice takes place during an overcast morning.
4:56 It's very fitting for the game itself because The "Tank" is a very extreme example of how severely the Green Flu can mutate a person, so much so that the result is a Hulk Zombie resembling a mixture of a Man and a Silverback Gorilla. The doom and gloom vibe highlights how severe the infection is and the extremities of it's mutations. The way he is revealed in the intro of the first game is a good example.
Nah man that tank has way way more muscle mass than a gorilla Surely skinnier legs but tanks arms aren't covered in fur and it's real size of the muscle
I never noticed the radio in the menu theme, makes it seem like there are other survivors trying contact someone(s) else but they just aren't getting anywhere.
quick edit bc im stupid, its extremely reminiscent of any folklore style description of sirens. it feels familiar because it harkens to the childlike memory of having a mother sing you to sleep, unintelligible words but a melody you can feel drawn into before you even walk. you just dont know its a modern day siren until its too late and you realize it wasnt a person calling you forward imo its meant to explain the feel of the start of the game/ starts with an unknowable but familiar string of notes to a voice, building the feeling of unease, while slowly warping slightly and becoming more and more filtered through a radio, turning the unease to dread when you realize the somewhat familiar voice you heard so clear seeming to maybe be friendly, becomes not a person but the echo of one, leaving you feeling much more alone than you expected, after looking for hope in the voice, dragging you deeper into the unknown
You nailed it on the monsters within saying that it “Hinted a bit of hope but it’s buried under uncertainty” That song plays at the end of each campaign in the first game, but each campaign are all just parts of the same journey of the survivors, so you have your victory, but there’s still a long road ahead
It's also because each survivor in L4D series is also infected and they spread the desease, yet they are immune to becoming a "zombie" themselves (I put quotation marks on the zombie because they are not a typical living dead zombies we get used to). Which is why when the survivors got rescued by, for example, a helicopter pilot, surivors have to shoot him and crash land somewhere. It would count as spoiler, but sadly this fact is only known through the tie-in comics and not from the game itself.
@@inspector_beyond it is hinted in the games if you pay closet attention to the survivors lines though, wich is the way L4D handles 90% of it's story telling.
@@pixavier9746 Especially in the second game where the survivors are called carriers by the military in the end and military requested the special helicopter for them (which i guess either with carrier pilot or the one that have the pilot isolated from the passengers)
The RUclips algorithm is very odd... I was randomly served this video while I was looking up 'Amazon Fallout reaction'. Either way, I'm happy to have seen this one video and become a new sub.
To give context: The first is the main theme, which plays on the main menu. A gentle way to set the mood for the rest of the game. The second is the theme of the strongest infected in the game. The Tank demands a lot of attention when it arrives, and so instead of getting a brief sting in the ambience like most infected, it gets its own grandiose theme as long as it bears down on you like a roided gorilla. The Monsters Within is the music that plays at the end of a mission. The subtle section plays during the credits after a whole campaign, and that last sting is what plays after the individual missions in that campaign. And finally… Witch! is exactly what you said it was. It’s a song meant to get you on edge. Witches are the only other infected that would be considered a boss and for good reason. That first part with the atmospheric vibe plays when you’re near one, usually accompanied by its distressed crying. If you get too close, or antagonize it in any way, it runs after the one who disturbed it and mauls them until it or its victim is dead, which is what that second section is played during. The third section plays only when you are the one being mauled by it. Edit: I was wrong about the third part of the witch’s theme. It plays when she’s been set ablaze, though I’m unsure why.
Hi no offense or anything but the third section of the witches theme actually only plays when you set her on fire with a Molotov or use of incendiary ammo in L4D2
I think that third part plays when the Witch is on fire, because fire is a counter to it. You literally "burn the witch!" In a way, it seems like the music stops representing _your_ fear, and starts representing the Witch's.
I could be wrong but I thought no music plays when you are near a witch because you are supposed to make no noise or basically be 'invisible' to the witch because you have to turn your flashlight off. Surely playing that music would be contradictory to what is happening in-game. It feels more like the first part is when you set her off. I'm probably wrong, its just how I see it.
@@xd3athclawx554No, there’s the unholy wailing when you are really close to the witch, for example you turn a corner and see her only a few feet from you, or quietly as you approach.
0:23 the L4D main menu reminds me of that one guy that commented on this theme capturing the story about a mother singing this to her baby in a stroller, She was at the evacuation center as one of the guards took a notice upon hearing her humming, Saying how much her humming calms her baby before making it going to sleep. but soon after realizing that the mother is infected, the guards had no other options but telling her to leave. However the mother requested the guard to give her a radio before she go, locking herself in a nearby building in order to make sure nothing happens to them. Knowing she would soon be turned into one of them, the mother uses the radio. Giving her one last time to sing for her baby. As the guard activates the radio, with the baby slowly fall asleep... The mother then was already turned after giving her last lullaby. Which can be heard after the radio was cut off near the end of the song
The first theme itself encapsulates the feeling of hopelessness, despair and death, the lullaby could probably be someone about to turn into an infected singing her last notes and it really fits with the Left 4 Dead aesthetic since the world there is basically gone, devoid of any living human beings and the song is there to tell us "there's no hope, were all gone" or you could say the song tells you that you're left...for dead
Fun fact that I don't see poeple mention. This soundtrack was done by the same composer as Team Fortress 2. He has some pretty impressive range, especially when you see his work for Portal 2 and Half-Life Alyx. Oh yeah, his name is Mike Morasky.
Having the experience of playing Left 4 Dead helps enhabce the nostalgia for this music. Hearing the Tank's theme, knowing he is closing in, fight or flight kicking in, the screen beginning to shake as his growls gets louder, perfection. I'm always kind of blown away by people who have a musical mind so it was cool to see and hear your outside perspective.
The first part of the witch theme plays when witch is nearby, the second plays when she is startled and going into chase, and the third is when she is burning.
The witch is really quick and i just noticed that this moment right here 16:15 sorta sounds like bare feet sprinting towards one, and then the theme proceeds to ramp up right after. I imagine it's the witch sprinting towards one and then upon noticing you just feel pure terror.
What makes left for dead unique is that they use music to tell whats coming at you, Tank! is the best example. There are also short music ques unique for each special infected, it tells you what lurking and it describes them well
I remember getting left 4 dead for Christmas 2008 while I was staying with my mom in the hospital going through cancer and I was able to bring my Xbox 360 and play with her while i was staying and I shall hold that memory forever! Super special soundtrack and game to me ❤️

@@teranyan I do all around prefer left 4 dead 2 since I find that it has even more variety but I will agree that I over all preferred L4D1's version of music and overall feel of desolation. But at least we can play the first games maps on the second one.
@@teranyan I agree with this, I think it’s partly due to the fact that L4D takes place after the fall of society, whereas L4D2 takes place during the fall. We see this in how L4D everything’s already gone, all the cities abandoned, you’re basically all that’s left, which lends itself to a really, really creepy atmosphere. Likewise in l4d2, we see the bombings, the fires starting and spreading across cities, and the only parts truly fully gone where the military isn’t still fighting yet are the more rural areas.
Is no one going to mention this man’s breakdown? His depiction, skill, attention of small details, passion and expression. Good job man first time seeing you on RUclips. Great video man love left for dead.❤ New sub
No seriously! The witch theme stops me dead in my tracks every time! Like an "oh shit" moment because she could be lurking anywhere, and if you're the one to disturb her...good luck. Valve upped the ante in L4D2 with the wandering Witches 😂
Both the soundtrack and ambience of Left 4 Dead are shit hot! Also, it's not just the instruments that all encompass, 2:09 those very subtle ominous radio interference and broken transmission sounds near the end. Considering what the campaigns are like, where you battle your way through each chapter, and right at the end, you radio for help. Just imagine if you got all that way and then tried to call for help, but the signal was just dead, or no one responded... Creepy AF! 😯😳🥶
Incredibly fascinating to listen to you describe the emotions the music evokes, and then basicaly decsribe the exact events the music is for on a 1-1 basis. Definitely earned my sub 👍🏻

@@endless013 The thing is though I have seen others set her on fire, but maybe because of the dynamic music thats different for everyone I never heard it. @@justdery17I think L4D was more focused on despair and a dust of hope rather compared to L4D2 where it was more of a upbeat kind of thing. L4D was more serious, while L4D2 was the one that was more for joking around and lighter. You only got to see one part of the map that you got to see the sun out of L4D which I thought was a pretty cool idea, which was the end of Blood Harvest when the Military runs over the fence, showing there was actual hope(of course not if you've read the comics). If you listen to a lot of L4D2 soundtracks, they got a bit more of an upbeat sounding to them, hell, you even got to fight at a concert playing tape recorded songs to go with it! So in the end, I gotta disagree.
the music also serves as an important game mechanic as audio cues are your best friend. in the map hard rain storms happen that cover up the sound on purpose so you don't hear the cues for the special infected or hordes. makes it very easy to get caught off guard and die quickly.
I really loved your reaction to the Tank and Witch tracks! I also really loved your addition to the main theme with your violin and learned a lot of new things. This was amazing
i've been playing left 4 dead for about 7 years, and i've always thought the music was cool, but breaking it down like this has given me new appreciation for what it brings to the table.
18:47 you were entirely correct with that. the Witch is a boss enemy you can encounter sometimes, it's a crying woman that sits or wanders areas of the game. her crying is very loud (along with the first part of the song WITCH! playing as you get closer), and you have to avoid her by not looking at her, getting too close, and avoid shining your flashlight on her. if a survivor doesn't stop these or shoots at her, she becomes enraged and starts chasing the survivor. she downs the survivor instantly and will constantly rip the survivor apart until the others kill her. the second part of the song with the drums plays while she's enraged
Man, love your form of reaction content because it's not like others, you actually have genuine insights and play yourself! Glad I subbed a while ago, these are always great videos.
As someone who has played Left 4 Dead since I was about 10 years old in 2008, this is absolutely incredible. Unlike other react channels you clearly know what you're talking about and go into depth about the music. Would've loved to see you analyse the different horde themes from L4D2, as they change depending on the map you're on and always fit them extremely well.

One thing that I always thought was really cool was that in Left 4 Dead 2, the main themes instrument's would change depending on which menu background was playing! Like you would have some creepy carnival music for the Dark Carnival level or some really unsettling back country music for the Swamp Fever level. It was a great detail!
If you ever do l4d2’s soundtrack you need to compare L4d’s ‘skin on our teeth’ with the second game’s version, they are the best songs in the soundtrack
0:40 I love that the singing in this track uses a lot of nasal/semi-nasal phonemes, it gives it that calm, lonely vibe, like someone humming to themself with noone around
Left 4 Dead 2 have some amazing different music too, they made the same music in different instruments for each enemy type, just amazing! Should do part 2
Something I would like to add at 12:22 something I gathered and since I have played is that with the hope kind of part with the choir in the background it is saying that “you have finally escaped for now” reminding you that even though you are safe there is still zombies surrounding you even in your time of hope
14:27 You got it exactly right! Normally you wouldn't hear that last part, you'd only hear it at the end, when you succeeded in finishing the level. Before that, where it sounds like angels singing, that's if you fail the mission and none of you survive.
there was a part in L4D2 "The Sacrifice" where the starting music LITERALLY tells us that someone is about to die by listening how the music played as "Eerie" into "CHAOS" within that part kinda tells that something wrong is definitely going to happen, and it did. Left 4 Dead 2 - The Sacrifice Intro Music look it up and it hits at 1:13 of the video.
11:45 that song is played during escaping a campaign level. Which is why it should get you hope of survival, I am kinda wowed how the music can tell you that.
This was so much fun to watch. I always knew that the L4D soundtrack was on another level but hearing somebody who knows what they're talking about actually articulate what's so special about it is super rad. Thanks for this!
17:10 About that - The witch is a type of zombie in the game that often can be completely avoided. The first part of the sound plays as an ambient as soon as you're in her radius. She sits on the ground and cries. As you disturb her she becomes scared and if you disturb her long enough she stands up going after you which is where the music then starts picking up!
The music also plays a huge part in the gameplay itself. The music accentuates the emotions of the moment, and the stingers warn you what's about to happen. It's one game where I never turn off the music, or listen to something else. Also, the three distinct Witch parts? Simplified, explained as such: 1: Do Not Disturb The Witch 2: Witch Is Angry! 3: Burn The Witch!
Especially happy you reacted to this game! Zombie Games like Left for 4 Dead always have this sort of feel that's indescribable when it comes to the music they use and create. I think the Left For Dead series and Project Zomboid (A game I highly recommend you check out, as well as the many music songs that come with it!) are both some of the best examples when it comes to encapsulating the vibe of most zombie games. Excited for your next reaction Lionmight! Oh, and congratulations on the rebrand as well! :)
12:30 this is so on point and it's amazing how you look like you knew what really happened. Fyi this soundtrack is played after the survivors were rescued on a chopper when you completed a certain campaign. When you mentioned "unsureness" you are also right since the survivors' journey didn't really stop after being rescued. Spoiler alert for those who haven't played the game the chopper crashed, they survived the crash then the game continues on a new campaign.
If there's one of the l4d's soundtrack that always scare me since I was 8, It's the sound when the witch spaws.. It's something that make me feel agony, like the witch, that is always crying (and in L4D2, walking by), and If u get closer, u'll be in a very danger (she puts u down with one hit)
You're really good at horror violin! Your addition to the main theme was so seamless I thought I was listening to an official version I'd never heard before.
I've got one question. Did you play any Left 4 Dead. 18:44 If you haven't played any Left 4 Dead or see what the Witch is. Brother you absolutely nailed it. You hit that analysis of the Witch in the game PERFECTLY.
I always enjoyed a certain theory regarding the "Left 4 Dead" specifc song. Near the end you hear the melody hummed but it sounds like its over the radio. Someone theorized it could be a mother singing a lullaby to her baby through a radio as she slowly starts to turn. Always loved the Left 4 Dead games and their amazing soundtracks. I really hope you listen to more, especially the Left 4 Dead 2 soundtrack, they went with a different vibe that still suites an outbreak. Really hope to see a part 2 soon

@@ItsKatsuragi that's some opinion since both games are some of my favorite games of all time but to each their own

Nah man that tank has way way more muscle mass than a gorilla
Surely skinnier legs but tanks arms aren't covered in fur and it's real size of the muscle
@@Kepalsomeone described the tank as a "fucked up looking gorilla" which I'd say fits
I never noticed the radio in the menu theme, makes it seem like there are other survivors trying contact someone(s) else but they just aren't getting anywhere.
quick edit bc im stupid, its extremely reminiscent of any folklore style description of sirens. it feels familiar because it harkens to the childlike memory of having a mother sing you to sleep, unintelligible words but a melody you can feel drawn into before you even walk. you just dont know its a modern day siren until its too late and you realize it wasnt a person calling you forward
imo its meant to explain the feel of the start of the game/ starts with an unknowable but familiar string of notes to a voice, building the feeling of unease, while slowly warping slightly and becoming more and more filtered through a radio, turning the unease to dread when you realize the somewhat familiar voice you heard so clear seeming to maybe be friendly, becomes not a person but the echo of one, leaving you feeling much more alone than you expected, after looking for hope in the voice, dragging you deeper into the unknown
Me neither honestly - i think because we would normally start loading a match before the main theme reached that part of the composition 😅
I actually have an extended 1 hr l4d menu music saved on yt that I would play to fall asleep to 🙃

You nailed it on the monsters within saying that it “Hinted a bit of hope but it’s buried under uncertainty”
That song plays at the end of each campaign in the first game, but each campaign are all just parts of the same journey of the survivors, so you have your victory, but there’s still a long road ahead

The way his eyes instantly lit up when Tank started.
Exactly what every player felt the first time a Tank showed up.
To give context:
The first is the main theme, which plays on the main menu.
Hi no offense or anything but the third section of the witches theme
actually only plays when you set her on fire with a Molotov
or use of incendiary ammo in L4D2
@@DustyDevilBytes ah, sorry, I misremembered.
I think that third part plays when the Witch is on fire, because fire is a counter to it. You literally "burn the witch!"
In a way, it seems like the music stops representing _your_ fear, and starts representing the Witch's.
Which can be heard after the radio was cut off near the end of the song
nooooooooooooo i wanted to forget about that comment :(

@@ozalduin4383 someone made this up on the comment, picturing the theme with some sort of story

bruh I love this community@@Washii_Musashi
The first theme itself encapsulates the feeling of hopelessness, despair and death, the lullaby could probably be someone about to turn into an infected singing her last notes and it really fits with the Left 4 Dead aesthetic since the world there is basically gone, devoid of any living human beings and the song is there to tell us "there's no hope, were all gone" or you could say the song tells you that you're left...for dead

@@teranyan I do all around prefer left 4 dead 2 since I find that it has even more variety but I will agree that I over all preferred L4D1's version of music and overall feel of desolation. But at least we can play the first games maps on the second one.
@@Matt_The_Anomaly Exactly. If they'd combine the l4D2 varierty and dynamics with L4D's Desolate, dark atmosphere, they'd create the perfect l4d

The 2nd version of "Skin On Our Teeth" is so much better though. Hell, compared to the first one, the first one seems actually quite bad.
@@Vengar_ wouldn't say is bad, it works good enough, the lfd2 just focused more on a despair feeling

Honestly, nice job accompanying the melodies with your violin. Good job.

Wow, I dont think I've seen anyone mention L4D's amazing soundtracks in ages.
Something I would like to add at 12:22 something I gathered and since I have played is that with the hope kind of part with the choir in the background it is saying that “you have finally escaped for now” reminding you that even though you are safe there is still zombies surrounding you even in your time of hope
14:59 was my favorite for sure, you played that so clean and gave me goosebumps of how good it was!!!
11:55 *"We're safe... for now."*
This was so much fun to watch. I always knew that the L4D soundtrack was on another level but hearing somebody who knows what they're talking about actually articulate what's so special about it is super rad. Thanks for this!
absolutely loved when you played along at the end of each song. definitely a cool channel and what skill!
8:24 *This would do so good for the Swamp Fever campaign in L4D2*
I'm not even playing L4D/2 but man hearing Tank's Theme on 5:53 gave me a bit of PTSD 😬

The TANK music still gives me goosebumps to this day, after so many years. wow
6:40 I got pstd, everytime i hear that sound i look for a gasoline or molotov
The music also plays a huge part in the gameplay itself. The music accentuates the emotions of the moment, and the stingers warn you what's about to happen. It's one game where I never turn off the music, or listen to something else.
Also, the three distinct Witch parts? Simplified, explained as such:
1: Do Not Disturb The Witch
2: Witch Is Angry!
14:16 I love this
12:30 this is so on point and it's amazing how you look like you knew what really happened.
15:41 im remembering traumatic experiences with this one
At 0:53, closing the eyes (like I did)you know it’s good when it sends tingles and it feels relaxing, but yet, so good.
