As a person that lives in Louisiana (Near New Orleans) I can explain why the campaign is so depressing. New Orleans is filled with people and joy with the whole place despite the lack of color on buildings etc. When the main part of New Orleans is taken away (People) It makes the place seem forgotten and grim and the streets filled with zombies adding more of a depressing state to The Parish.

I’m a born and raised Louisiana resident that grew up like 20 minutes outside of New Orleans. Coincidentally, I was also really getting into zombie apocalypse stuff as a kid by the time L4D1-2 came out. Trecking through malls, mills, swamps, and finally to The Parish was a fantastic feeling. Seeing the streets so broken, dead, haunting. The OST did an AMAZING job at capturing the theme with a somber Louisiana jazz twist. Where most of L4D2 was lighthearted compared to the first game, the hauntingly empty streets, scattered food, hastily put together barricades, and fires were all beautifully atmospheric. The Parish’s theme also filled the air with an eerie yet beautiful danger. Truthfully, it reminded me of the Left 4 Dead intro screen from the last game. SUPER depressing.
