Welcome to my Persona Dancing Trilogy Review! Persona 4 Dancing, Persona 3 Dancing, and Persona 5 Dancing are some of the most popular Persona spinoffs games and in this Persona Dancing Trilogy Analysis, I'm going to be reviewing The Persona Dancing Trilogy. There will be story spoilers in this Persona Dancing Trilogy review for Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5 because I compare them to Persona 4 Dancing, Persona 3 Dancing, and Persona 5 Dancing. The Persona Dancing Trilogy From Great to Awful is just my own opinion on The Persona Dancing Games. If you disagree with me, that's okay. This Persona Dancing Trilogy Analysis is a follow-up to my Persona 4 Analysis, so make sure you watch that as well. The Persona Dancing Trilogy From Great to Awful is the best video I've made.

    2:08 Persona 4 Dancing
    16:20 Persona 3/5 Dancing
    24:54 Conclusion
    26:15 Outro & Supporter Credits
The Persona Dancing games are a strange anomaly. They’re among some of the most infamous games to come out of the great Persona spinoff era for a myriad of reasons. For those who are unaware, the Persona dancing trilogy is a series of rhythm games where the main appeal is to watch your favourite characters dance to funky remixes of tunes from their respective games. While it’s easy to point and laugh at what they ended up becoming. The concept of a Persona-themed Rhythm game actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it. The series is well known for its catchy music and since Atlus already showed interest in expanding the Persona franchise beyond RPGs thanks to the arena games. I figure they thought, “Hey, why not” and greenlit the project. Persona 4 Dancing All Night was originally released for the Playstation vita back in 2015 but would eventually receive a remaster for the Playstation 4 a few years later. This version of the game has better texture quality, runs at a higher resolution, has better performance, and is overall just the best way to play Dancing all night. The only issue is getting your hands on it.

1:16 worst part is, if you already own either Dancing 3 or 5, you can’t buy it. I had Dancing 5, and only just heard about that 4 was included as a bonus. I told myself I’d at least get 3 and 4. Then I tried purchasing it, and got a message saying I was unable to buy it, because I already owned one of the things in the package. So essentially, I’m locked out from playing Dancing 4 just because I bought 5 on its own

You can actually get it on ps4 and ps5 if you buy the endless night collection. It’s not on the art though for some reason but if you read the description, it says that it comes with it. I feel like P3D and P5D were missed potential but P5D was dealt the worst in my opinion. It came out so soon after P5 came out that no Royal, Q2 or even Strikers songs was in the game. P3D had every game of it already out so there was nothing left out and that makes P5D substantially worse. This is a situation where DLC would have made sense but surprisingly, Atlus released no DLC for other P5 games.

    • @KaiKrimson56

      @NotLukeSky 2 года назад +61

@@KaiKrimson56 Yeah, and they could have had Keep Your Faith/Throw Away Your Mask remix, Prison Labor Remix or even a Kichijoji 199X remix. As for Strikers, every jail theme could have gotten a remix. Also Counter Strike and the final boss themes could have also gotten remixes. The possibilities are endless and it sucks that this didn’t happen because of a company trying to release a game so soon after the hype of P5. And again, this is a situation where DLC would have actually made sense since P5 still had more games releasing.

    • @Mageman17

I find it funny that this is a scenario where DLC would have made sense and Atlus didn't do it, then we look back at the release of P5R and groan at the excessive and probably unnecessary DLC that it got, which is how not (sometimes) to make DLC.

I feel like something that could have been brought up for P3D/P5D is the way the dlc works. The DLC is the exact same between games, which means that you can use Shinjiro in P5D and Akechi in P3D. It makes it incredibly obvious that these were developed to be 2 different games to milk as much sales as possible and the fact that they may as well be one game with a mode select mode in the title screen.

To be honest though, I feel like that’s much less of an issue now that the bundle for all 3 games is like, $25. Like yeah they were trying to be greedy by splitting the game in 2, but it back fired and they’re the 2 worst selling persona games, and now the bundle for them is 1/4 the price.

To make the story explination for p4 simple... its about parasocial relationships. This is more a look of it from the perspective of the influencer rather than the viewer. People shaping themselves in a manner appealing to their viewers as an easy means to building a community. I feel like the words bonds was used oddly when words like community, culture and other things flesh out the overall feel while sounding less cheesy. But, I attribute that to translation.
Mankinds desire for easy bonds. Interesting word choice.

I loved P4D soundtrack and was so excited for P5's but the limited tracks was so disappointing that I ended up immediately returning my copy on amazon. Like you said, alot of the OG songs did not translate well into good remixes (or maybe the DJs were bad at remixing them). Even worse was the SHEER number of remixes for particular songs while omitting other classic P5 songs I thought would be in the game. I like Rivers in the Desert as much as the next guy but did we REALLY needed 3 remixes PLUS the original song on the track list???

Then we have 5... This was the hardest platinum for me, just because of how bad the game was. The music was boring, certain songs were over done, I didn't enjoy the character's interactions, and so it was a lackluster platinum I did at 2 in the morning hopped up on soda, snacks, and sleep deprivation.

Same here, I also platinumed all three of those games, and my from favorite to least favorite were 4, then 3, then 5 mainly due to the song selection with 5 dancing having the least variety as they only had the original p5 songs to go off of at the time, while p4 dancing had multiple spin off titles they can pull from as well for 3 dancing, if 5 dancing came out alike a month ago I would’ve been better with the song selection since they could’ve pulled from other p5 games at that point

As a visual novel enjoyer I'm fine with reading lots of text and getting into the minutiae of what the main characters are thinking.
However, the monologues in these games kinda felt redundant and meandering alot of the time.
It's probably because the characters monologues mostly just relay information we either already know or could infer on our own.
I think it could've really been a good chance to get some real 1 on 1 insight on who these characters are but I guess they just missed the mark.

But they would have benefittet from being one game instead of two, this would have benefitet the story and instead of 2 games with okay content for 100€ there would have been one massive game for 60 bucks. I honestly love P4D’s story so much, love what they did to Rise’s development, showing that the underclassmen wanting to be more independent and show their senpai how much they’ve grown, it really puts a good ending to the persona 4 series. I didn’t have too much problem with the visual novel section, can’t disagree some parts are slowly and I hope they’d just get to the point, BUT I didn’t mind it since it just meant more time with the investigation team, so give me 50 hours of this and I still wouldn’t mind 😂 ! As an overall game, P4D is perfect and I would’ve hoped that P3D and P5D would’ve added a story as great as P4D but still keep those dancing social links.

Honestly, a lot of the reason I loved DAN's story was because of Rise. She's my favourite of the P4 girls, and the story not only features her front-and-center, but also focuses heavily on themes from her Social Link in particular. You can really see how she's grown past who she was in P4, and as someone who adores her, it really adds to the experience. I also think Ashly Burch did a fantastic job taking over as Rise's VA. I love Laura Bailey of course, but Ashly adds a bite to Rise's voice that feels really appropriate. She's not as gentle-sounding as Laura, and I think it works well for Rise's character in DAN.
Also, the remix of HEAVEN, featuring Hatsune Miku? Pure fire. If nothing else, DAN has a fantastic soundtrack.

I absolutely agree about P4D’s story. I own three different versions of this game, and having to play through the story each time to unlock all the songs, even skipping dialogue, really started to wear on me. I liked the idea of getting to play as different characters, but the excessive internal monologues don’t really make any sense when the narrative is already framed around Margaret telling you this story. Like, why are there dialogue options? But I did like Kanami.
You mention wanting the option to have “goods” break your combo during fever time, and I have to say that is actually a challenge modifier available in P3/5D. I do appreciate some of the new challenge modifiers in P3/5D, namely the wobbling notes, but others seem super superfluous and just serve to inflate a King Crazy score. These two games really were just one step forward and two steps back.
I do agree about P3D’s music, as well. Not every song hits for me, but when they do hit they’re fantastic. And I actually really like some of the charts in 3. The “Want To Be Close” Remix is possible my favorite chart out of any of the games, it was one of the first I got an all “perfects” score on.
The only thing P5D has going for it, at least above the others, is the UI, and I’ll just leave it at that.
P4D is definitely my favorite still. I’ve platinum-d it thrice and I own the OST on CD. It truly never gets old.
But anyways, thanks for the review and giving me an opportunity to talk about these games!

To be honest, I'm just not great at rhythm games. I actually have a good sense of rhythm, and can dance in real life. In rhythm games too many notes overwhelm my senses and I freak out and mess up, either because the notes are coming in too fast, or there are too many, or both. Which is a shame because it makes playing these games less satisfying

Very nice review. One of the problems i had that you briefly touched upon was the amount of "visual vomit" on the screen. The amount of times i lost track of a note, because the screen was just destroyed by flashing colors or visuals and particularly during fever time is ridiculous. An option to reduce this would have made a world of difference.
Edit. Neat trick i just figured out, if you turn you brightness all the way down in config. The notes stick out very well.

Are they really widely considered the worse? Most people I've seen consider them fairly ok at least. A fun fact, though, 3 Dancing was already in development but due to 5's popularity they rushed to make it to come out with 3, hence why the songs in P3 are much better remixes.
I always appreciated that, with P3D, Elizabeth has some nice interactions due to being from the present. My favorite being when she gets visibly depressed during one of her discussions with Makoto due to knowing what would happen to him.

In contrast, I slogged through P3D's platinum trophy in a couple days, never touched it again, and gave up on completing P5D halfway through. The spark P4D had is completely gone in the sequels.

  • @HedgeThatDamn
    @HedgeThatDamn 5 месяцев назад +4

My personal biggest issue with P3D and P5D is that treating them as sequels like P4D wasn't something that should've been hard. Sure Makoto died at the end of Persona 3, but a simple "something is fucking with the Great Seal and only responds to the bonds of people shown through Dancing. Makoto returns for one night some time after Persona 3 with the SEES team to stop this new threat". Persona 5 would've been even easier "Sometime after the events of P5, Mishima has set up a school musical about the Phantom Thieves. And he just so happens to have cast the actual Phantom Thieves as their own parts, with Ren being brought in just for the occasion. However in the School itself the Metaverse has re-merged and is being ruled by multiple dance gangs, it's up to the Phantom Thieves to show dominance as a dance group". The P3D one hurts even more cause the opening song literally is written from the perspective of "I'm so glad we can finally be together again as a group"

P4d is really just a good game. Story makes sense , choreography and music are just amazing. You can tell developers tried to make something special for persona 4 fan.
P3 dancing game is okey. Choreography is still great and I was impressed with some songs . If you are fan of p3 I think you can enjoy it. But remix’s are weaker compared to ones from p4d. Still there are many songs that I like.
P5 dancing game is just lazy. Remixs are just god awful. They recycled 1-2 songs many times. How can you make original p5 music worse. Choreography…. Just stop. Dance doesn’t flow well to the music and doesn’t feel like it’s got any meaning. I truly believe they made this game purely for greed.

...gotta disagree with the thing against P5's choreography. As lazy as that game is, aside from Ryuji (which still baffles me to this day since the guy who danced as him was Junpei's choreographer), nearly every dancer brings their A-game in some shape or form. Joker's dances all kill it, mixing ballet and hip hop like an alchemist to represent P5's bombastic feel. The Phantom Thieves always crossing a line between being badasses with a tinge of grace was very well shown with Joker's movements. And River's in a Desert feels very personal to me, with each verse really showcasing Joker's longing for justice. He stays cool, he keeps his calm, but every time it reaches the chorus, spilling out the lyrics about this being a final chance for him, he completely gives himself up to the beat, whether with a partner or alone. Because this is his moment. And at the end of the dance, when all is said and done, his ideals finally gave him a much-earned victory over the man who took everything from him. He doesn't do his classic all-out attack finisher pose with the same snappy speed as usual, but instead, a content-chilled-out variant because at least. His justice has finally won the day.
There was literally an entire analysis video on Akechi's dance, I ain't gonna get into that--
Haru is phenomenal during her movements, you could tell the actor had a field day with every single one of her songs. Unfortunately, her outfit doesn't match the phenomenal work she did. (Seriously, what the fuck is that-), like, I agree the game is lazy, and that the music is kinda trash, but Jesus, the outfits make me depressed.
Yusuke was so in character it kinda killed me, XD like. It felt like Yusuke himself was genuinely dancing. For Morgana, I could imagine him doing like, more acrobatic and amazing/cartoony shit, but oh my goodness, Yusuke just feels like Yusuke. I feel like I could imagine the guy spouting off an entire speech about every turn and kick step he makes, explaining the beauty of how great they are. (And while I'm not gonna say something big about it, I feel like if you really look at his dance blooming villain /I think haven't seen it in a while/ you'll notice a lot of meaning behind it. Possibly Yusuke pushing past the trauma he endured from Madarame, which is why he's so serious during this tune. And the way that Joker and him do the part of his social link could be representive of him trying to build his creative self back up with the help of Ren/Akira...I dunno, I'm just looking way too much into something I haven't seen since 2020, lol
Ann just feels like Yosuke to me; a little bit sexual at times sure, which is actually in character surprisingly, but overall she felt very modern and cool whenever she danced. Nothing overly flashy, but she danced and she made it look good. I especially like her stuff with Ryuji; the way they both did finger guns and high-fived was adorable.
Honestly, I could make an entire tangent about how awesome the group dances are, like, Yusuke and Futaba in the days when my mother was gone still gives me chills.
Also, speaking of Futaba...she was just being a gremlin most of the time, but when she started tap dancing. Jesus christ. The way it matches up with the song /and/ just looks flat out looks amazing /AND/ is a reference to the Persona stage play, is just SO cool to me, like, I love that so much.
Makoto...is fine I guess, lol. Not my favorite, but it never felt too bad. Her doing those motorcycle motions in Price, the song to the palace she got her Persona in was a pretty nice touch, and the way she moves her feet around is honestly very cool. Unfortunately, her fight-dancing has nothing on Chie--
So yeah, that's my short essay about a subjective opinion, lol. I still agree with you on everything else, and honestly do think P5 had the weakest choreography overall...but I gotta be honest and transparent when I say that while the game is a bit weaker in that aspect, it's still really sick to me and I personally think just throwing it off as another lazy part of this cash grab is a little disingenuous. Because those dances and a couple of the social links personally save the game for me at least.

I've always liked rythyn games, but all of them are usually Japanese music I'm not into, and so having one around Persona was definitely a big selling point. I could honestly gush about these games for hours, they got me through a really tough spot in 2019, and I played them a lot with friends in 2020. I honestly wish there was a bigger community for these games, but I understand why there isn't, especially since a major reason I like them, and the series as a whole is because of where I was when I played them.

There are parts I agree and disagree with. You missed out a few key details about the story for P3 Dance is that this takes place at the same time as Persona 5. So Elizabeth literally broke time and space to have one more night with the P3 protagonist and the dancing was a bit of an excuse since she kept hinting that she was from the future and missed him highly.
Also, something P3D did that the others did not do as well was that every partner dance had more personality in how each character interacted with one another in their songs. Probably due to the fact that they had more history with one another.
While it doesn't change that it is overall one half one a game compared to P4D I still think that between all 3 games, P3D was solidly in the middle between best and worst over P5D

Time to rant about the DLC. Half of it wasn't released at all in Europe and Australia. So first off, obvious thing, some of it just straight up isnt available. Second thing, cosmetics and songs in 3 and 5 can't be purchased individually in these regions. For example, I just wanted Futaba's Shujin uniform. But noooo, to get that I have to buy ALL OF THE COSMETICS. And third, you know that free DLC for 5? IT IS STRAIGHT UP COMPLETELY INACCESSIBLE IN THESE REGIONS. You can view it in the store but when you try to download them they require you to own another one of the free songs released. That's fine I guess. Or it would be, BUT THAT SONG ISN'T AVAILABLE MEANING I AM COMPLETELY LOCKED OUT OF THE FREE DLC JUST FOR BEING BRITISH. Barely anybody talks about this issue when discussing these games so wanted to bring it up here to highlight the sheer fucking stupidity of Atlus.

I'm pretty much with you on this one. P4D's story is a little long, but at least it actually has a story that ties into the original game really closely, plus it definitely has the best remixes (and it's the only one to actually incorporate the characters' Personas into the routines). P3D and P5D are pretty disappointing since they lack that kind of story, and P5D definitely suffers from having been released before Royal and Strikers, but I still prefer it over P3D because I feel like that "close bond between teammates" thing that all the dancing games share makes more sense with the Phantom Thieves than it does with S.E.E.S.

I got really lucky when I got the p4 dance all night on PS4, I wanted p5 dance for PS4 bc it was 25$ on black friday, but the only copy was the display copy which was actually endless night so I got all 3 games for 25$. Thanks GameStop employee who suffered thru black friday 2019.

My personal ranking is as follows:
    1. Persona 4 Dancing
    2. Persona 3 Dancing
    3. Persona 5 Dancing
I'm surprised you pointed out the note color being blue in P3D but didn't point out the abysmal UI in every menu and song in P5D. The main menu genuinely strains my eyes so much. Neon red sky, black & gray for high contrast, and then rainbow confetti in neon as well. It's so noisy.
The red notes help with visual clarity, but the sides of the screen being black and dark grey also make it too high contrast for me.
(Also idk whose idea it was to port a UI that works well only on handheld consoles to the PS4, a console where many players play on large TVs. I feel like I have to go cross-eyed to see every note.

I wouldn't call it awful but mediocre instead. Its Fun to play on and off but the underwhelming content and microtransactions pull down the game alot. In the End, It was great to see P3 and P4 characters in HD while also dancing :) Great Video!

Yes! Someone who agrees with me about macho momentum!! It sounds crazy out of context, speed it up to make it easier, but it works!
As for my basic take as someone who has managed to King Crazy every song that I have bought on all difficulties aside from that pesky Tanaka song on all night, I can see where you are coming from. I didn't have as much of an issue with the set list in 3 and 5 but I can definitely agree on the blocky text issues in 4. All in all though I really enjoyed all three and wish they would add a few new songs from later games. I've heard that in Japan they did, but the rest of us never received those songs unfortunately and I have checked many times.

This is the review that hit the closest to home for me. I got the Platinum Trophy in all 3 dancing games within two months and while I love rhythm games, the grind is extremely tedious.

Should I check 3 and 5? It's not really my thing, but I love the cast of 3 and 5 and would at least give it a shot if it's a good enough rhythm game

I can definitely see the problem with P3D's color choices since the main color of the P3 is, ya know, BLUE, even the backgrounds

I had to order a copy of the Dancing Collection from overseas a couple years back and make an American PS4 account to use the download code for P4D and the included DLCs because I knew I'd want to play all the games eventually and it's not sold in my country. It's a shame you have to go through such hoops to access P4D because it's easily the most fleshed out of the three games imo and the remixes are mostly pretty good. The code has an expiry date as well and I'm pretty sure by now they're all expired

I recently bought the collection for 20$ and I believe it was worth it just for P4D. Ironic how P3D and P5D became the bonus (still good games though).

Now sens we do have Persona 3 Reload, Persona 5 Royal, Strikers and Tactika and Persona Q2 i would LOVE to see a remake of Persona 3&5 dancing with the new remix (imagine a dancing remix of "Wait and see", "Road less taken", "Take over" or "it's going down")

I loved the P4 Game and imo the DLC stuff wasn't too much (the Songs with new characters were kinda expensive though)
