I really didn’t expect to like the new UI as much since the original was themed around “circles”, but I think reload mixes both circles and water themes together really nicely.
The UI especially stands out the further into the game you go. It’s one of those amazing design decisions that pop out especially after the game finishes (like a lot of the dialogue and other design choices do). I hope you enjoy reload!

Another thing about P4's UI, notice how the battle screen has a rounded black border resembling a TV set when irs a characters turn. This both ties into the TV world itself and one of the games central themes of "people only see what they want to see."
Now it's my turn to sound like I'm smart, specifically for P3P: You've played the original P3, and you've gotten so used to the ever present tint of blue that, at times, you completely forget about it. Then, later on, you're getting ready to play P3P, but as you start up you see something... new. Something different. A choice. A force convinces you to select the new option, whether it be curiosity, preference, or hunger for a new experience. Either way, the game starts, and all of the menus are just as you remember them... except that the blue you've grown so accustomed to has vanished. In its place, all of the menus, from the calendar to the battles, have been dyed a gentle pink. For you see, like the menus, the game itself remains virtually unchanged. However, the pink reminds you that playing through the game as FeMC presents an important change that shall follow you throughout the whole game.

Mother 3 changes the music to really calm when you open the pause screen. The most serious moment just happens and you open up the menu screen to hear elevator music. This is hilarious

Hinawa just died and flint went to jail. You open the menu and relaxing elevator music plays. Or theirs a huge robotic pig mech is in front of you and you open the menu to restore someone’s hp and the relaxing elevator music starts playing

I will admit I have a problem where I pause P3R just to look at the menu and forget to play. It’s literally beautiful.
One game with pause menus that I really enjoy is Astral Chain, because of how diegetic it is. You are not freezing the game in its tracks to look up information about the game or make adjustments, it's the protagonist checking their own mobile device for the items they're carrying, information about the current case that they've been cataloguing, the state of maintenance and upgrades of their legions.
The protagonist doesn't even leave the screen during the pause, the camera just moves until they are on the left corner and the menu is visible to the player.
It also helps that the save menu is separate from the pause menu, contextualized as a PC at NEURON HQ, where it makes sense to make a more complete report of the current events and keep all that information saved.
Those things really help keep you immersed in the game, since you're not broken out of the game setting when you need to pause

I've actually been trying to break down and recreate the P3R UI and MAN OH MAN, the timing and layers and masks/mattes, they really did God's work on that UI design, and all I've done is the pause menu and All Out Attack splash screen!

I became a fan of Persona soon after Reload came out so seeing one of my new favorite youtubers cover it makes me so happy. Alax, if you see this, I’ve been watching video game YT for over 12 years since i was 9. Seeing where you’ve gotten your inspiration from others and watching you turn it into your own special thing has been a blast! Here’s to more years of silly video game videos :)
I also feel like the main colours of the uis reflect our main characters.
The persona 3 protagonist is depicted in media as melancholic, sort of somber, struggling to truly enjoy things in life - so the colour blue as the colour of "sadness", but also "calmness" fits him.
The red of persona 5 is bold, almost agressively. This, I think, represents how bold in his goals the p5 protag is, trying to change the whole world for the better, while also showing how passionate he is about everything.
Yellow is the colour of happiness and warmth. Which might fit how Yu appears to be the source of happiness for a lot of people around him??? Idk I haven't played most of persona 4 yet tbh so I don't have a good idea of the mc (I was gonna write about how the social links in 4 feel more deeply connected to the mc than in 3 but idk if that fits my previous writing well.)

I’ve played a lot of games in my 2 decade of life and P5 was what ignited a fire in me. My friends like the design and gameplay, I loved the UI, the concept and I thought one day, I could work for ATLIS. Oh my god- CATHRINE?! I loved the opening start page!
I remember for my college project, I was to team up with the game department (game dev,des, and art students) to make a mini game. I pushed so hard for something similar to P5. I wanted to be proud so bad. Alas, we didn’t do that because, despite a few us in design, we needed a Graphic Designer to help with the UI and I was as skilled in art.
Today, I still dream. One day I’ll make a game…and use the same technique or something similar to P5. That game always brings the fire when I give up on myself.

I have watched a lot of videos on the subject of these games' menues, and this has my favorite editing of them all. Which is appropriate, because editing is just like UIs in games, in that it can elevate the material a ton but often is sacrificed just for having something basic that works. Good stuff.

when i bought persona 5 royal over christmas break (it was on sale) and first started playing, i’d just interact with the menu to see how smooth the transition between screens were. it was crazy.
as i was playing this game i just completely fell in love with the ui. i never even realized how much an amazing menu can add to a game.
