Oh, Pat! How funny! My DD17 and I just had this discussion yesterday after she (AGAIN!) put stuff she no longer wanted on my sewing table! WHY?? Because she didn't know what else to do with it! :O I had to back up the video and let her listen to you say, "Help your family members not dump their crap in your room"...I asked her if that sounded familiar. She said, "No, not at all!" (big grin!) :D We had a good laugh together!
I received some Sew tight magnets in a subscription box that work really well on my rolled up cross-stitch to keep it out of my way. Binder clips help me do the same. The only person that puts stuff in my sewing room is my husband. He forgets to tell me that a packaged arrived! I always get surprised! Works for me!
Pat mentioned using her quilt side strips; I salvage mine by using leftover longarm side strips (including batting/backing) for ‘stitch testing’ on longarm then for my domestic machine, I cut 12” length blocks from strips & use for ‘stitch testing’ as well.
My word is "Mend" and I am making some progress. Started with my collection of socks that need darning (yes, I know how to darn socks without making blister-causing lumps) and then it will be on to the big tote of jeans that need patching (and to think my great nieces purposely buy jeans with holes all down the fronts --- I just can't handle that! My sisters all say to them "What did you do to earn those holes? In our day, we worked for them out in the hayfield and barn yard.") Funny thing ... just yesterday I saw a picture of patching jeans with -get this ... patchwork! Hah! But I don't think my husband would be too thrilled to wear them. Old school here ... in our mid 60s. We grew up making do with what we had and our moms made every effort to patch our clothes so as to not draw too much attention to the repairs.
Do is a great word! My goal for this year is USE and do. Use what I have, finish old projects, Use or do the kits I have purchased that have just been sitting. I’ve been organizing my sewing area to make my space more usable (not done yet), listing all my UFOs and also completed, un-quilted tops. I actually found some UFOs in with my Tops. Once I finish all this, I’m going to reorganize my scraps and start using them, but probably will wait till fall to start that. Love your videos, always inspiring.
When my kids were little and they left stuff laying around (toys usually) I had a box that I would tell them periodically to get their stuff or I was putting it in the trash. That worked for me.
I am supposed to be penning my nephews quilt but I had to go to the Retinal eye doctor today and he gave me a shot in my right eye so I am taking it easy today. Will do penning tomorrow and finish for quilting.
I've never crumb quilted before but I do save my scraps. I've used a few for Sherri McConnell January BOM and I'm liking it so much I may make more Churn Dashes with my March Hope leftovers.
I do dump stuff in my sewing space. 🤷🏼♀️ but I keep any empty plastic tub (15” x18” x11”) and it all goes in there - bet it fabric that needs putting away, my scraps or books and notions that need sorting. Then when I have a spare half hour I go through it and pack it all way. At least when you are in a hurry, it doesn’t get dropped on the workspace 😉

If they are taking your stuff and dumping it in your space, either put it away, or tell the person dumping your stuff into your sewing room that you are using it in that other space short term, or it belongs in the place they took it from to move it to your sewing space. Have a calm discussion and try to understand why they might feel it does not belong in other space when you have a dedicated work space. The main thing is healthy communication. Example. I know I moved me actual sewing space into the dining room, because my dedicated space had 1) gotten out of hand and two the shelved my husband promised me had not gone up. I have been working on organizing my space, he has now put up the shelves. all of my sewing is returning to the sewing space. I have one of Pat's Carts to keep books, knitting/needle work and misc next to my spot in the dining room so that I can roll it off to a corner when I need to like company over.
After admiring your black & white for your March Hope blocks & having only several jelly roll size strips of 2 different prints in my stash, broke down & ventured out to Hobby Lobby Saturday. I needed some other things that Joann's didn't have. I was lucky enough to find a black & white and also an almost white background with tiny multi-colored confetti squares in the remnant section!! Got them all cut Sunday & made 5 blocks yesterday along with 1 of the block 9 of Home Is & the March BOM from A Quilting Life. So I was pretty proud of myself :) Still deciding on colors to use for the corner triangles.
I'm loving the crumb blocks. And I live the yellow tape idea. The other night cutting the hope block. I'm the problem. Do I have a timer and I set it. And when it goes off i stop and clean up. A 5 minute job. I'm loving this block.
Answering the question about "dumping" I would first analyze why it is happening. What is the family dynamic? Are you generally 'messies' in the house? Are you leaving things around the house as well? Are they coming in to 'visit' you and just forgetting to take their belongings when they leave? Maybe they are leaving you 'presents' as a reminder of themselves.(like pets do) LOL After you know the 'why' then you may have more insight into how to stop it. Best if it is addressed as everyone making a change in behavior.
My goal today is first to get outta bed (depression). I want to finish quilting my quilt that is on longarm then catch up on Home is..., Hope, and last weeks Sewcialites block. I want to try and make some crumb blocks too, but if time allows. Oh am I also want to make a list of all my tops I need to get quilted, measure them for backings, and clean up space again.
Praying for you. Try to get outside and get some sunshine every day. If you have SAD, sunshine is a great help. Covid is a very trying time for those who suffer from depression. Will keep you in my heart and mind. PS. Only work with colors and fabrics that make you feel uplifted. I am dragging my feet on a quilt for my son that he deserves, but they are his colors, not mine. I decided to wait for Spring when there are other colors outside that will help me deal with his grays and blacks as I am working.

Love ...love your videos. Thank you. I'm wondering if you could answer a question for me. I have a machine that has a vertical spool holder. Most newer machines have the horizonal holder. I use Aurifil thread. Because of the way it's wound on the spool, crisscross, as opposed to round and round, (real technical here) does the thread come off the spool correctly for a vertical holder? I'm not having any problems but have been told my thread might twist and cause problems with the tension. Can you tell I'm a new quilter? 😊 Thank you in advance for any help with this matter.
I love to see your ideas and techniques. I have lots of fabric pieces but they are of all colors. How could I make a crumb block with colors that don't necessarily blend like yours?
Here are some suggestions: 1) Using a firm straight edge tool like a yard stick, mark one long straight line in the direction you wish to quilt. Use a chalk marker, or one of the many types of disappearing markers (air, water, heat). Then do your first line of quilting on that guideline. Another idea is to use painter's tape - again, place it along a straight edge tool so it doesn't go curvy when you press it down on the quilt top. Then do your first line of quilting just next to the edge of the tape. Now that the first line is quilted, use it as reference for the succeeding lines. 2) Most machines come with an accessory called a seam guide. It is shaped like an upper case "L" with the long leg being straight and smooth, and the bottom being flat and curved. The straight leg slides through a hole in the back of the presser foot and is held in place with a small screw. Determine how far apart you want your lines of quilting. Mount the seam guide through the hole but don't tighten the screw just yet. Rest the curved leg on the first line of stitching and adjust its placement so the needle will be at the desired distance away from that first line of stitching. Tighten the screw and your set-up is ready ... just let the seam guide run along each of the previous lines of stitching ... no brainer, relaxed work. HINT: check that screw after every pass, sometimes it will loosen up and the bar will shift causing the measurement to get off. 3) If you want your quilting lines really close together, just use the edge of the presser foot as your distance gauge after doing the first line of stitching as described in step 1 above.
@@hollywaddell6727 I was hoping for a faster way - LOL. I did do the marking with a pencil and that worked well. Once I am at my machine quilting, I don't want to stop and get up for marking and such - 🤣🤣🤣

@@hollywaddell6727 it did, but I don't likenusing the walking foot. Besides, I switch between FMQ and then to some of the straight sections, I just keep my FMQ foot on and go. It takes too much time to keep switching the feet 🤣🤣🤣
When my daughter was in her teens she was horrible about leaving her things all over the house. She had a pair of bicycle shorts that she loved. She was told numerous times to pick her things up and put away. My husband threw those shorts in the garbage!! Nothing got her attention more! So I say throw their stuff away if they continue to make your sewing room a dump area!!!

Still starching my fabrics for Serendipity. All my BOM’s were pushed back so I decided to just take my time with them and enjoy the process.
My word is patience and my dogs is calm. Believe it or not we are both improving. less barking and more patience with all my projects.
My word for the year is Grace. Grace for me, and grace toward others. (Especially for my 5 year old grandson who tests my patience, lol)

When you do the wave quilting do you go back and forth or all one direction? Would you hat change if not spray basting. I pin paste.

All colors work together in crumb blocks. It is so freeing. Google Crumb fabric blocks and you will get a lot of ideas.
