I am not a quilter and I do not care for the design of a lot of quilts - I prefer the look of simple patchwork quilts. This rectangle/brick layout design I love! Your demonstration was clear and well done.

I agree! As impressive as it is with what all the machines can do these days, it just feels too gawdy and like it misses the point. But this hand-sewn style is so charming. And more talent involved IMO

Thank you for this! I love hand sewing but find hand quilting to be so tedious and repetitive when doing a large blanket, but with this method it’s much smaller and you can change it up by switching between making rectangles and sewing them together! Much easier for us adhd crafters! I also like this method because it’s easier to tuck everything away and take breaks if you need.

Oh my gosh, this is one really beautiful quilt. I just stumbled upon your channel and have been enjoying this video immensely. I have never been much of a quilt person, although I have always admired the handiwork. I am 67 and have only just discovered English Paper Piecing. What a different world this has opened up for me. I am absolutely smitten by the process and look, and this quilt of yours seems to showcase it in such a beautiful way. The mindfulness of slow stitching has brought me such calm and peace…

Historically, that was called a flat fell stitch, I believe, and was often used to hand stitch clothing (modern blind-hem stitching is based on that). I usually secure my flat fell stitched with a knotted backstitch. Your stitches are beautifully neat and I love the colors of your quilt!

Thank you for showing us this block Rachel. I've caught the EPP bug, which has lead me into this sort of hand work. It's so soothing. It was amusing when you mentioned your nails - I was just thinking that you looked like a 'normal' person (please don't be offended!) as all the other You Tube tutorials look like they're done by hand models rather than real people. So thank you for that too. Thought this block would be good with my many unused jelly rolls, which I couldn't think of anything different to do with them - so thank you for that too lol.

Great tutorial! When I handsew, I don't use knots, I don't trust them. Instead, I simply make a stitch twice or three times at the same place, in this case, I would do it under the border, or anywhere it won't be visible. That's how I learnt to do it at sewing school anyway.

Never seen a brick pattern before, nor thought of it! It's beautiful. The fabrics are beautiful too...makes me want to redecorate my entire bedroom, make quilts, curtains, pillow cases and light shades to match!
The easiest way to tie a knot where you want it, is to use a pin, similar to you using your nail but you can be more accurate with a pin. Put the pin point through the loop and draw the cotton and the pin away from each other, a bit more on one, then the other until you're almost at the exact spot you want your knot, then stick the pin straight down into the fabric, pull the thread to complete the knot around the pin. Pull the pin out of the knot once you're sure it's where you want it.
Ugh I HATE cotton thread. I only buy polyester thread for hand or machine sewing. The only cotton threads I do buy are embroidery flosses, or if I can grab some of the original Sylko mercerised cotton threads, that are still knocking around, despite it no longer being made. I learnt to sew as a child almost 50 years ago, (bloody hell that sounds depressing!) using Sylko cottons and they have a real sturdy feel to the thread between your fingers.
It's like you can feel how equally cylindrical it is throughout the entire length of the reel, and you can feel it's perfect roundness. A few years back I researched which is the closest equivalent to Sylko on the market now, and can only imagine I landed on a practical joke website! I bulk bought a box of black and white Coates Moon thread and spent the duration of their life expectancy swearing my head off!
Never again! It's like watching someone doing rustic traditional hand spinning with sheep's wool, where as best as they can they try to get even thickness throughout the yarn. But being handspun, it obviously has bulgy bits every so often, as it's not machine spun to perfection. That's exactly what Coates Moon cotton is like: thin, then thicker, then so thin is barely gripping itself, then a big thick lump that gets jammed in the needle with fibres everywhere. Just awful! Seriously ruined my enjoyment of sewing. I used them up sewing on paper projects for journals, and even those I made sure to glue properly first, cos I wasn't banking on the thread to do anything other than add pattern and texture.
At the risk of sounding like an old fart: (I'm 54!) "They don't make 'em like they used to!" 😂
Thank you for sharing. Don't know that I have the patience, eyesight or elegant fingers to do an entire quilt this way by hand nowadays, although hand sewing adds a certain warmth and charm that machine sewing just can't. But even if I can't make the whole thing by hand, I'm still very interested in this brick design, and I can add the quilting stitches by hand at the end, and whip them together a few a night.
Actually, I'm literally 4 days post hysterectomy, and am not allowed to lift barely a thing for twelve weeks, so you've given me the idea now, to do a few of these brick blocks by hand, to make a bag! I've currently got only enough wadding to make something small like a bag anyway, so that's perfect! 😊
Yay! I knew I wanted to do some sort of sewing, art or craft project to alleviate the post op boredom, but just couldn't find anything that inspired me to start...and now I do! 😁
Thank you! I'm eager to get cutting my pieces from my scrap basket now, I've got some lovely cotton fabric scraps that are too small for most projects, but will be perfect for this! This has made me VERY happy! I've finally chosen my convalescence project! 😘😘😘

I have done this kind of quilting for many years except that I do the corners first by folding just like you do the sides but the way I do it you end up with a 45 degree angle on the corner folds and I seem to prefer that look as to the straight 90 degree angle at the corner. It's just as easy as the way you do it but it just takes a couple of minutes longer to do but to me it's worth it. You do some very beautiful work as. I have taught sewing for many years and have had many students that just seem to never get the knack of doing it. Thank you for having a channel that can show people how without going to pay a teacher for lessons and just can't get the knack of sewing.❤

Thank you Brenda, yeah I keep meaning to try the mitred corners but I've done so many with the square corners that I don't want them to look different so maybe if I do another project with these rectangles I'll do them then.
Thank you for watching and commenting xx

I have a bunch of soft-colored fabrics from Moda, and I think this would be a pretty way to make a quilt without much contrast but still create visual interest. Thanks for a great tutorial.🎉

FYI: I do what Kate at the Last Homely House dies when hand quilting abd run my theead across beeswax to keep it strong, it will not split and will not break as easily. Thanks for this tutorial. ❤

That's how you strengthen cotton thread. If you use a polyester thread wax shouldn't be necessary. I don't use polyester as I have seen when you use 100% cotton fabric, polyester thread is stronger than the weave of the cotton fabric. That can cause the cotton fabrics to split and tear. Many years of washing and wear before that happens. It depends if you expect your quilts to be heirlooms.

@@TraceyWarneke Im pretty sure she is just adding to the conversation, the different threads were already said. It's actually a tip I forgot and bought polyester after watching this the first time, and now kicking myself because I have the same colour cotton and beeswax here.

Hi Rachel! I'm so excited after buying from Missouri Quilt (with your code)! You've inspired me to start my own project. This is perfect for me and with all the great fabric I have, I'll have so much fun putting all the patterns and colors together. I bought a cream jelly roll for the border color. I thought that might work well. So, thank you so much for creating this video! I really needed something to soothe my anxiety and some therapeutic busy-work to fill my spare time. Thank you from Savannah, Georgia - USA❤

ive learned so much from you (watched this about four or five times haha) and I have cut out a few bricks ready to get going....
About the knot, I pass the needle three or four times through the first knot rather than tying twice....something my Oma showed me years ago

I have always wanted to try quilting but I have limited space for laying out big projects. This is a perfect technique for me to try and make and attach one block at a time. Also, I have never been good at sewing even though I do other kinds of needlework, but your tutorial is so clear and simple that I am sure it won’t take me long to get a handle on it. I’m so excited to finally be able to quilt! And the brick layout is so beautiful!! Thanks so much for this video!!❤❤❤

I’ve done a king size grandmother’s garden all by hand. The hexagons were 3/4 inch. It took me a decade to finish. Obviously, I did not work on it everyday. This pattern will not take as long, but once finished it would be a nice heirloom to hand down. I love your pattern pieces.

Im new to quilting and have watched 4-5 tutorials to see which i would prefer and the English Paper Quilting is great. You have a new follower because you explain each section so easily. Im just trying out small weight bags which are done by a lady called Cappi in the USA just to see how it goes before i spend too much. Im hoping to gather enough fabric to make your quilt ,cant wait an thanks again 😊
