    A collaboration with friend and fellow photographer Dave Reeves, we had planned this shoot many months ago before the UK went into lockdown so it was nice to finally meet up. We revisit a location I have shot before although this time I'm shooting with the Bronica SQA in 6x6cm on black and white film. Weather conditions weren't ideal but I was pleased with the result. Check out Dave's channel in the desription below. Hope you enjoy.

    My introduction to 6x6 was in 1961 when I was a photographers assistant at the age of 16.
    I was given a Rolleicord 1V and told to learn how to use it. My own camera at the time was a Zenit C with a 50mm f3.5 preset lens.
    Rolleis were the order of the day.
    Now I am 75 and my corrent 6x6 cameras are a 1957 Yashica Mat with a 75mm 3.5 Lumaxar lens and a Kiev 6c 6x6 slr with a 90mm 2.8 Vega lens. Both lenses on these old cameras are really sharp.
    I like the waistlevel finder on the Kiev as there is a mirror in the hood to enable to focus and shoot at eyelevel. This is how the Rolleiflex Tlrs worked.
    I have a darkroom and enlarge with a condenser enlarger and a Schneider Componon S 100mm 5.6.
    I also have an Epson V600 scanner for colour negative film and colour slide film. Usually Portra and Provia 11. Huge files are possible and wonderful images.

      Lovely cameras !. I’ve not gone down the enlarger route yet but once the house is less like a building site I’m keen to buy one although they are very rare these days.

    I always enjoyed my Pentax 645N more than any of the DSLR's or mirrorless cameras I have owned. Great to watch the fine art of medium format film. I used to shoot Fuji and I think with the pastel tones, and the wooden ceiling, I would have enjoyed doing color in that location also. Nice job. I used to always have three backs loaded and ready.

    • @LeePengellyPhotography
      @LeePengellyPhotography  4 года назад

      Yes you can’t beat MF and film. I usually have two backs on the go, one BW one colour but was hoping for better light for some colour.

    i went to local maui photographer meetup recently. someone else had a hasselblad. it was a film. i have 907x. when i looked through his viewfinder, it was a square. and lately i've been shooting square 6x6 crop and loving it. came across this video because i'm looking into square crop photography. composing is so easy.

    "...I am used to being in a landscape...with sheep! That sounds a bit dodgy..." 😂 yes it does! Excellent video, Lee. Really great images and
    compositions. It's not the quantity that counts, but the quality. And thank you for keeping us entertained!

    I only shoot with 6x6 SLR’s and TLR’s. I find that it allows for a artistic square format, and for landscape I can crop to 645. There are advantages to 6x6, usually less weighted camera, easy to compose horizontal or vertical, more frames per roll and more camera options. I have tried 6x9 with a Fuji GL690, the issue I find is that it’s less frames per roll, large heavy camera, fewer and more expensive cameras.
    All in all 6x6 and cropped 6x6 has plenty of resolution to make large prints. If one desires more, then go with 4x5 large format, in my opinion it’s the next big jump.

    It's hip to be square. I love my Hasselblad 500C. For me it helps me to make more minimalist images. I also find I like the waist level finder. It seems to slow me down and actually look at what I have composed.

      Yes it’s definitely a good move for me to be square 😂. I find it so nice to compose with.

      Luís Conde Think it was more tricky with getting the focus right and the light was very contrasty. This time round it was very nice flatter light

    Hi Lee. Just came across this video. Great content, very nice image. Interesting to me as I to have a Bronica - a SQ Ai. I love using even if it is a bit of a lump to carry around. I've also got a Yashica Mat 124G - somewhat lighter (as well as a couple of decent digital cameras).
    My problem is that I can't remove the film back on the Bronica (although I can still open it to put film in and take it out). The mechanism seems to be jammed. I live on an island off the south-east coast of Thailand (not many Bronica's around here!) and took it Bangkok recently to see if I could get it fixed. I got to a repair shop, told the person the problem, and pointed towards the stuck button - and it was gone! I went to several repair places but they all said the same - no spares, cannot fix. Bronica was never a popular Brand in Thailand and so it looks as if I am stuck unless there is someone out there with the know-how and facilities to make spares. Do you have any ideas? Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

    • @LeePengellyPhotography
      @LeePengellyPhotography  2 года назад

      Hi thanks for your comment and glad you enjoyed the video.
      Just a thought but have you got the dark slide in right the way ?. If it’s not right in it can stop the mechanism working. Other than that I’m not sure, I know it’s only a spring type mechanism inside that holds it on.

    • @colinclark3218
      @colinclark3218 2 года назад +1

      Ha-ha. Yup. Checked the dark slide. It is also in good condition. No wear on the little lump.
      It looks like the mechanism is stuck, but I am loathe to try to fix it myself - and, as I said, I've lost the small release button. If I could find one of those, maybe from a scrap / spares camera, I might be able to get one of the repair places to take a look at it. I was wondering if you knew of anyone in the UK who might carry spares or suggest a work-round and a way of repairing it. I've tried in Thailand, but Bronica's are far and few in between here. Mention the brand to most places in Bangkok and they just laugh at you (or the more polite ones just smile).
      Thanks for getting back to me.

      @@colinclark3218 I bought all my Bronica bits on eBay, from Japan. There’s no places left in the U.K. I know of anymore sadly.

      OK. Many thanks, Lee. It is no great hinderance as I can still load / unload film and use the camera. It's just that I'm a bit of a perfectionist and would like to see everything working correctly - and maybe buy a second film back as well.

    I don't know whether it was because you are a more competent photographer, but your film images looked vastly superior to my eye, mainly in terms of the way the tonal range was rendered. His looked overly contrasty with blown out highlights, whereas yours looked natural.

    • @LeePengellyPhotography

      sfbdotcom To be fair I know he was shooting into the light whereas I was shooting into the shaded part. My films shots were straight off the roll though very minimal post processing just to clean it up a bit. I find film much more pleasing for contrasty scenes.

    Hi Lee, are you using a Benro G2? I recently picked up the GD3WH for large format, but I think it may be a bit much for med, 35mm, and digital.

    • @LeePengellyPhotography

      Yes I am, I have both heads but tend to prefer the ball head with the 6x6cm and use the feared head for architecture mainly

    @ Lee Pengelly Photography how ya now, do you ever plan for reciprocity failure of the film eg with your first shot @4 seconds illford would recommend using 6 seconds...@15 seconds = 33 seconds ect ect? my calculation might be of but should be near enough

    • @LeePengellyPhotography
      @LeePengellyPhotography  3 года назад +1

      Print film is pretty forgiving but transparency film can be tricky, my meter is pretty accurate but I do tend to over expose slightly especially when using a polariser. I do use a reciprocity calculator for long exposures and low light shooting.

    I hate the square format. That is why I have two Hassleblads, a Rolleiflex F3.5, a Voigtlander Bessa 6, a Zeiss Ikon Nettar and even a Holga 120. When I use my Olympus EM5 Mk ii I find that use the 1:1 aspect ratio more often than the native 4:3. Yep I definitely hate the square format.

      Gary Row I think the movements are great with 5x4 especially with 120 backs but generally I’m finding 99.9% of the time the medium format camera does the business with less expense hassle and weight
