WALKS IN HAMPSHIRE at ROMSEY (ROMSEY ABBEY & ROMSEY CANAL)

- This is another video in my series “Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I take a 3.5 mile circular route to the North of Romsey in Hampshire (the town is located 7 miles North West of Southampton).
I start the walk with a little exploration of the town itself by passing through Market Place - which has some splendid historic buildings - and then on to the magnificent Romsey Abbey (now the largest parish church in Hampshire) & The Folly House next door.
The small tour of Romsey is completed by a visit to the War Memorial Park which includes an impressive bronze of a war horse & soldier as well as a complete Japanese Field Gun from WW2.
I then head to the Plaza Theatre where I start my meander through the countryside - initially following the path of a disused canal. Along the way, I explore a restored Victorian railway signal box (now a museum).
The Fishlake Meadows Nature Reserve provide an alluring view on my left and the canal looks so peaceful on my right as I head North.
Eventually I change direction by heading West across some water meadows before coming across an enchanting channel of the River Test - a little piece of Heaven!
Finally I head back South towards Romsey, following an A road & then a woodland footpath through the Industrial Estates back to my car.

Look at that beautiful Logan🥰 So cute he is Dave. I guess you can tell I love animals. What a wonderful walk. I enjoy each one. These walks are so amazing and interesting as I have never been to England and wished I could visit each place you have showed us. We are lucky to have you show us around Dave and Logan. Thank you 👏🏻☀️
Thank you Melissa. :)
@@DaveFord you are welcome Dave . Keep up the great walks .Much appreciated👏🏻
Great video Dave, I'm from Romsey myself and know that walk well.
Thanks Nick. A lovely place to live. Thank you for watching.
Beautiful and informative video Dave😍 Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Renata and indeed thanks for watching.
Thanks Dave, another great video, and a really pleasant way to end the day. i must try this walk myself.
Thank you David. I hope that you have good weather when you do your walk.
Nice one Dave...from a life-long local resident
Thank you Chris and indeed thanks for watching.
Back in the 70's my sister and I sat in the back of our parents car heading down from Salisbury to Mudeford or Sandbanks on a Saturday. We would always look out for the big billboard approaching Romsey, "You are in Strong Country"...quite amazing to see it again after so many decades and revive a long forgotten memory. Thanks Dave!
Thanks Mark .... and thanks for watching. :)
Thanks Dave.🙂 I learnt a lot that I didn't know. I have driven from Oxfordshire via Romsey to Mudeford in the past to avoid the motorways. That walk looked lovely.
Thank you Cathy.
Hi, another lovely walk. Will be doing that soon !
Only worrying part was when you first stood in front of Abbey. Looked like a man was relieving himself against the abbey in the distance! 😮
Keep the vids coming
Alan and Michelle 😊😊
Thanks. Just had a look at the video - yes it does look a bit odd. I seem to recall that the chap was doing some gardening / tidying up but maybe it was not quite as innocent as that!
Very Nice Tour Greetings from Austria ✌
Thanks for watching!
AMAZING!!! 💖❤🧡💛🧡❤💖💖❤💖BIG Royal LIKE!!!
Thank you.
Hello Dave , I know Romsey quite well but you have shown a walk I did not know, must give it a try one day. Thank you.
Thanks Peter. :)
I live in romsey and used to work at the signal box...great video :)
Thank you and indeed thanks for watching.
As always a joy to watch. Thank you so much. You have inspired us to visit. The Abbey is particularly beautiful. Wishing you a very Happy Easter...🐣🥚🐥🐇
Thank you and best wishes to you as well.
Great video Dave and Logan,🐶 very informative and looks a lovely walk, thank you for the tour 🚶♀️🚶♂️🚶♀️
Thank you. :)
Super walk Dave. Romsey Abbey really is an impressive building isn't it? Have you thought of doing a walk at another of Hampshire's impressive churches, Christchurch priory, perhaps combining it with a walk to Hengistbury Head?
Thanks. Christchurch Priory - one for the list for 2022 for sure.
Wonderful stuff as always Dave and Logan! I was surprised to hear about the Fishlake Meadows nature reserve - in my mind it had been turned into a housing development.
Thanks Ian. Yes, I believe that plans have been submitted for a housing development on the old "World of Water" site next to the nature reserve! Thanks for watching.
Great vid Dave, very informative. I'm going to walk around Romsey centre later in the year. I noticed you ended up at Romsey World of Water. I can't understand why that closed, it always seemed to be doing well when I visited. best wishes, Rob
I believe that there is going to be a housing development where "World of Water" is located - which is a shame as it was a good place for a cup of tea! Thanks for watching Rob.
@@DaveFord Tx Dave, I wondered if the site was sold for development. It's probably in a flood plain ! :(
Thanks for your walk and interesting historical points of Romsey. Wimborne Minster is another interesting town with some great country walks nearby.
Thanks Kathryn. I hope to be doing some walks in the Wimborne area some time during the Summer. Thanks for watching.
Hello David, interesting video, my current boss is a Romsey boy, not a Strong...a Moody! Lovely area, we have only ever driven through, this video will make us think about stopping next time we are in the neighbourhood. Cracking area for wildlife, that water looked crystal clear. Have a great easter, Ceri and Kat ❤☕👍🐰🥚
Thank you both. I had a boss called Moody as well! Thanks for watching.
Hello again Dave and Logan. Ah! Romsey. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that on my list of videos. I know the town very well , having gone to school there when I was 14/15 back in the dark ages. One of my sons now lives just up the road in Timsbury. The secondary school in those days was just passed the cinema/theatre. I think it was up the lane towards that signal box, before it moved to a new site at the other side of town. I’ve been wanting to visit the Signal Box for years, but it’s only open on a few days of the month and I haven’t managed to get there yet.
When I was at school Strongs brewery was still in operation and I had to walk past it on my way to and from school each day. The smell reminded me of cold tea, a little bit sickly.i haven’t walked your route, although I knew the railway was built on top of the canal for most of it’s length.
Lots of memories. Thanks Dave.
Thanks for sharing your great memories of the area Lionel and indeed thank you for watching.
Love the abbey. I ring there every Wednesday and Sundays. We've had to stop for obvious reasons. (My profile pic is the bells at the abbey in the wooden cage at the top of the tower)
The door on the right the small one is the way we get in to the tower to ring the bells.
It is certainly a magnificent building Peter. Thanks for the extra information about the small door. Thanks also for watching.
@@DaveFord no problem.
Dave, you should make merch I would love to buy some
Now that is an idea!
