Flounder Fishing - Jack's Country

- We go fishing for flounders off Weston Shore in Southampton Water and then move on to the home of Out of Town. On the way we pass by many places that form the history of Southampton including where Southampton began. We also come upon a black swan collecting twigs to build a nest.
About Jack's Country:
I used to work as and editor on Out of Town with Jack Hargreaves and then went on to make 60 programmes with him called Old Country for Channel 4 as producer/editor.
Jack mainly lived in Hampshire and Dorset and most of his programmes were shot in these two counties. They told the day to day life in the countryside and introduced us to many of the country crafts that still existed in those days.
I am making a series of films on RUclips about the subjects that Jack would have included in his TV programmes. I am not trying to recreate Out of Town or Old Country as this would be impossible without Jack's wonderful story telling but what I am hoping to do is make films on subjects that Jack may have chosen to make programmes on.
I do hope you enjoy them and if you have any suggestions on subjects you would like to be covered please let me know in the comments section.

I'm a resident of Yorkshire now. Spent many years 'darn Sarfampton' Did a lot of Flounder fishing (and Eating) at the spots featured in the film. Bought back some fond memories. I was an avid watcher of 'Out of Town' (with Jack lighting up his Pipe on set) and Jack's Country. Thanks for bringing the memories back.

I used to longline from a small boat launched in magazine lane with my late father, this film brought back fond memories, thank you. Hotspur used to be blue if I recall correctly, as kids we'd race the train along Hythe pier seeing if we could beat it!! I watched the reclaiming of Hythe waterfront, and now its got the lock. Who'd have known back then, I'd become a police officer pounding the beat in Southampton City Centre!!

Thank you. The fishing around here is not what it used to be. We would always go out and catch something but that really does seem to have changed.
Lovely video. Thanks. These areas became bass 'nursery areas ' . Unfortunately with bass being a pelagic fish, it caused the demise of flounders, eels and small harbour fish. No wonder there's very few, if any , left.

I wouldn’t compare it to one of Jack’s programmes as I think nobody could copy his unique style. I suggest this clip should just stand on its own as a very good piece of work. I’m afraid that, these days, it is not the sort of film that the big networks would be interested in - which says everything about the quality of the networks. I’ve tried to watch some of the angling programmes that have been on but I found them all to be the exact opposite of relaxing. I could watch these types of films all the time - no matter the subject. If you are able, please keep them coming.
Thank you so much for your lovely comments. I of course realise that I cannot ever replicate Jacks programmes other than in style as I used to make them for him. What I am try to achieve though is a record of things that still are in the Hampshire Dorset countryside that Jack may have made a programme on. I have many more waiting to be made and now with the end of covid restrictions I am starting to do the research and arrangements for some of them. What a lot of people do not realise is how long they take compared to a lot of the programmes on RUclips. If you take the programme I made on the Frank Whittington the toy maker this probably took a month as I do all the pre-production, production (filming) and post production work. Therefore comments such as yours make me feel all the time is worth it. I will continue on so please keep an eye out for more.
@@DaveKnowlesFilmmaker you deserve all the compliments you get. I’m sure that many, as I, don’t underestimate the time, the money and the care that is needed to produce high quality films. They deserve a far wider audience than YT can give; I’m sure most people just put in Jack Hargreaves or Out of Town to the search function and that led to his pieces and then to your pieces.
I expect every generation has said the same but the changes that I have seen in the countryside are almost beyond belief that it’s the same land producing the food we need. At the fields beyond ours, the farmer has been letting out 50 acres(?) to people who grow salad leaves. It’s all been planted now for the first crop; they will harvest in about 6 weeks and then plough again to re-sow through the season. It must be the newer varieties that allow for such early sowing. All the work is undertaken by Eastern Europeans who are unfailingly pleasant and exchange good morning when I see them on my early morning dog walk.
As a nation, we continually demand cheap food; as a percentage of daily income, the amount spent on food has decreased dramatically. To enable this demand for low cost to be met, farmers have to work their fields harder and harder; our local farmer told me that he is getting the same price for wheat today as he was 5 years ago - and yet the cost of everything has risen dramatically in the same period. We have a large company with farms locally producing chicken eggs. There is no battery production anymore (thank goodness) but the buyer still wants the cheap prices. The company made an application to have a chicken farm about 3 miles away and the furore that this created! Banners alongside the road; petitions being circulated, you might have thought that a blood sport was being applied for. And yet, these complainers are the same people who want the cheap eggs. Talk of large lorries almost in an unending caravan all day; when it will be 2, 3, 4 at most - probably less than the number of tractor movements. It does seem that it’s all about wanting the benefits but don’t produce in my backyard. I can only think that all this is the result of townies buying houses in the countryside; commuting to wherever but wanting some kind of idyll that can’t exist.
@@theofarmmanager267 Thank you once again. I am very happy growing my RUclips channel which now has subscribers from all over the world many who have never heard of Jack. The interesting thing is that the viewing figures of some of his programmes are getting very near to those that watched Jacks first series of Old Country. Even by the third series the viewing figures were less that 1,000,000.
So what's the point calling it flounder fishing if you catch nothing?
Lovely little film Dave👍😊 We had a Black Swan on the River Cherwell in the University Parks centre of Oxford around 15 years ago. I would see it often on my Chub seeking adventures and it too would collect twigs in the hope of one day finding a mate, but alas as a exotic escapee the chances were very slim 😔 One day it had disappeared after being around for a couple of years whether to a fox or who who knows? It always made me feel a bit sad that it only had itself for company and if any Mute Swan came near it although 'Blackie' was smaller he'd chase them off. A shame really, I think a Mute/ Black hybrid would be a very handsome bird 😊 Liked and subscribed 👍

Unfortunately never had a second trip and my friend whose boat we went out on has now sold the boat and become a landlubber.

Not sure why but that's fishing. What I am doing is trying to find similar subjects that Jack would have filmed for Out of Town and Old Country. I of course worked as and editor on OOT and produced Old Country for Channel 4. These are early days and I am just feeling my way so looking for feedback as to what subject viewers would like to see. It’s what makes the Mary Rose flagship so interesting, what survived wasn’t the crowns of kings or the capes of emperors but the nit - combs of the common man
@@davidheafield1436 Thank you David, I didn't take it as being bad.I used to work at Southern on a series called Going a Bundle and that had these wonderful small films on how things were made, so in my series I want to do things such as how a cricket bat is manufactured. Also there was at Brockenhurst a toy factory which employed I think around 100 people. The toys were sold all over the world. This I think is worth find more about. All the best Dave
