Diet, nutrition, and mental health. What is the connection between them, how does our nutrition influence our mental health and emotions, and what are the steps we can take today to walk on a path towards proper brain health? Has your diet significantly affected your emotions, behaviors, or mental wellbeing? Are you seeking a powerful alternative to the never-ending cycle of prescriptions? On this episode of Health Theory, nutritional psychiatrist and author Dr. Uma Naidoo joins Tom Bilyeu to discuss such matters and more as they explore the connection between your diet and your mental behaviors. They discuss ways to lower anxiety through diet, the affect sweeteners have on your brain, what key foods to avoid, the ketogenic diet, what steps you can take for proper brain health, the dangerous and hidden ingredients in fast food, how to build a healthy proper salad, and what supplements everyone can benefit from taking.

    QUOTES:
“When a doctor says to you, “Here take this prescription,” as I have done as well, it’s disempowering to someone, you know. You’re being told you have to do this and you have this symptom and this is what will make you better. I think that nutrition and food flips that ratio and puts the person in the driver seat.” [25:14]
“Having those little things at the tips of the fingers is empowering; knowing that there are 200 names for sugar." [28:30]
“What I find is that of the different diets, the mediterranean eating pattern has consistently shown the best results for depression and anxiety.” [32:00]

Note: not just fried food from restaurants All cooked food. There’s no way they would cook with oils like olive, coconut, butter, etc when they can cut costs instead. They’re so much more expensive compared to veg oils. Even your fancy restaurants are known to cook w/ these oils :/

@@bharatirai527 eat fruits, aim for rainbow of vegetables, cut down on sugar, avoid processed foods, lean protein, healthy fat, healthy whole grain. If ur living in a country where there is not a lot of sun (especially in the winter) get vitamin D supplements. If ur lacking magnesium (check with ur doctor) then get that as well since it helps against depression and anxiety (based on this interview) experiment with diets, but you can start with Mediterranean diet, which i have described above, as a guideline. Also, drink plenty of water. That’s what I do and I feel pretty good.
The only thing what I need is probably vitamin d supplement cause the sun is going away again 😄 I also eat noodles as carbs, but not overloaded and I workout 3-4 times a week (hitting the gym). So, I burn that.

meds clients clients for life, real food keeps the doctor away. All medical schools in the US are heavily sponsored and funded by the big Pharma, so of course everything med students learn is HOW TO PRESCRIBE YOU MEDS and make you believe you need them to get healthy, which is a LIE, the health industry doesn't want you to get healthy, it wants you to be a patient for life. if you eat healthy, whole foods, you'll never go to the doctor. I've been eating very healthy for the past 20 years and i only go to the doctor once a year for a checkup.

I was a person with chronic infections.. i would visit doctors at least every month, and i would just be given different type of antibiotics. Nobody told me to stop consuming poison like sugar. Until i got tired. Until i decided that i will no longer trust my health with conventional doctors out there who know nothing about health. I did my own research. Change my diet and do yoga every single damn day. I am now antibiotic free for 2 years and i have never been to a doctor since. Too many doctors out there who will make you get sicker rather than get healthier because that’s how they make money. I thank for channels like Tom’s and Dr. Eric Berg.

I stopped sugar and junk for one week, and it resulted in consecutive days where I just felt awake and not stressed as much. Then we got invited to a kids birthday party and I pigged out on pizza and doughnuts. The next day, high BP again and anxiety.
It works, but the bad stuff is highly addictive and you have to be disciplined, which I am not.

    • @ShalomSimplified
      @ShalomSimplified Год назад +6

The easiest way to deal with bad food if you lack self-discipline is simply to cut off access. Don't have it in the house (have someone else do the shopping if you seriously can't be trusted in a grocery store). And don't go to parties where you know there will be junk food. It's not good for your child(ren) either, so it is a good time to talk to them about the issue and get them on board.
The good news is, when a good diet becomes truly habitual, you will find that self-discipline naturally increases, or at least your desire for junk goes down. I used to love pizza and chocolate as much as the next person, but I don't even miss them anymore. If someone shoved a slice of pizza in my face, I am confident I could say "no thanks" and I say this as someone who definitely does _not_ have perfect self-discipline. It doesn't happen overnight, but it really is possible, especially if you can get your family on board.

Your mention of curiosity piqued my interest in responding to you because at 18, you are just now creating a strong foundation upon which to build your entire future! I'm just starting my 90th year of being curious about everything! Curiosity is one of the most powerful and life-enhancing gifts I could ever hoped to have for gathering wisdom! PLEASE do protect yours with your strong emotional defenses against those who may mock it, insult it, or otherwise try to cause you to fear its results (that heckling may well occur over the years ahead).
Life for me is still an exciting adventure, even with its profound tragic turns, its rewarding successes and its greatest moments of feeling deeply loved. Every step of the way, curiosity led me into EXPERIENCES that kept life exciting and full of a strong hunger to learn MORE!
My best advice is to recognize early-on that what qualities you choose to VALUE will direct your path either away from the goodness of life or toward it, but that it's taking RESPONSIBILITY (accountability) that will turn out to be the source of your greatest & most rewarding adventures.
One of my most challenging adventures has been to conquer fear; it's may well be an undercurrent in each human life BUT someone ("Anonymous") told me that "Once you become fearless, life becomes LIMITLESS!" That answer to my curiosity excites me to this day! I wish I'd learned that at age 18!! So, build your best life-foundation NOW before anything else! Learn what it is that really EXCITES you & PROTECT that(!) so others' attempts to dissuade you or to cause interruptions on your path will NEVER cause you to let that go! WHY? Because it's your DREAM!
"When dreams die, life becomes a broken-winged bird that cannot fly."
That was written in a poem by a famous author whose name escapes me now.🙁 Part of my highest purpose has always been to help others realize their dreams! What's happening today behind political curtains will provide you with all you'll require to fulfill YOUR dream. Dream big! Gather any fears & set them aside. Just DO IT!

I'm 40, diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago, also a teacher. I found that going keto for a time had a similar effect on my concentration etc as Concerta 18. Ultimately, Concerta is what really has made the difference to me because of my age, I already had as many coping strategies as possible, it was the last piece of the puzzle. However, eating badly definitely makes me worse, diet is so important. Magnesium, I notice, affects my mood a lot.

I completely agree, I am 25, and have learnt in the past year that I have suffered from depression for about the last 9 years (memories come up of being very emotional at work and quitting A LOT of jobs In that time). I have become very sensitive to what I eat now, and also use a nutrition tracking app on my mobile.
And almost every time I eat one of these two things, Added sugar or highly processed foods/ carbohydrates, I will suffer from depression for 1 to 3 days starting in the 12 or so hours after consuming any of those in more than moderate quantities (think whole 170 gram bag of potato chips, or a medium/ large Mcdonald's meal).
It is a struggle because I have always enjoyed eating heaps of bad food, mainly because I put on very little weight.
But since I started my new healthy eating habits, I take very little time off work (Finally after 9 years of having work attendance and financial issues.)
Food is a VERY important factor for me in how I enjoy my life...

Tom, please interview Dr Georgia Ede ( nutritional psychiatrist ). I am sure you and your listeners will find her suggestions very interesting, easier to follow, and less inflammatory than "healthy whole grains" and the "rainbow". There are way too many oxalate-rich foods and spices in this lady's suggestions.

Discovered Dr. Gabrielle Lyon (muscle-centric medicine) on Tom's show, and WOW, it changed my life!!! I am so very happy that I - being vegan - on principle and bc I thought it was healthy, ethical eating - glad I did not reject what she had to say about animal protein and our protein needs as we age. She spoke to me and I GOT it - I have had no qualms since about eating animal protein, thank God!

As a PhD Food Scientist, I have had to unlearn all the BS that I was indoctrinated with. I’ve been on a carnivore diet now for 1 year. I have never felt better, am rid of inflammation, I have improved mental clarity, and I feel the happiest I’ve ever been. My philosophy is to avoid GMO foods, eat food from free range animals, avoid any packaged/processed goods, etc., and this approach has been very liberating. I don’t worry about food quantity, I eat until I feel full, salt my food liberally to suit my palate, I find I only need to eat once per day, my body weight is good, healthy as a horse, and plan to do this forever. I want to remain healthy in later life, and NOT end up with cognitive decline. Easy peasy choice from my perspective 🙂

If you want to avoid cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases, you should know that a carnivore diet is only effective if you know your APOE phenotype. Everyone is different. Know your body, because studies on Alzheimer’s Disease and lifespan typically focuses on generalized findings. To every rule there is an exception, though they are very rare.

I always believed the Mediteranean diet is the BEST for long term, which I've started to eat back in the early 2000's when i lived in Italy for 6 years and saw how healthy most Italians are. A lot of ppl think the Mediteranean diet includes a lot of pasta, which is not true. Italians eat a lot of vegetables, nuts and a lot of seafood and fish, rarely they eat meat, especially in the Southern Italy where I lived and where everybody was so skinny. Likewise, I"ve been eating the Mediteranean diet- only seafood and fish in terms of animal protein (if you will). and I can still fit on the same clothes from 15 years ago. I lived there for 6 years and I probably saw 1-2 obese individuals in northern Italy while I was traveling, and who knows maybe they were not even Italians.

Tom, another take on the hypoglycemia panic attack connection is, as your blood sugar drops, your body releases adrenalin in order to increase blood sugar and release free fatty avids to increase energy substrate. When I was doing a lot of long term fasting, it wasn't uncommon for me to have a panic attack in the middle of the night when I'd wake up to pee. Now that I don't fast, and eat significantly more carbs, my anxiety is pretty much nonexistent.
