  • its very, very good, but not perfect! Flying Scotsman with Steam Generator ,
    The Flying Scotsman fitted with the 'New' Hornby Steam Generator and the HM7000 TXS sound chip.
    I have waited two and a half years for this model to be released, and was really looking forward to running it! On the whole a game changer for model railways, however the model is not perfect, but I am defiantly not disappointed.
    Join me as I take at the all new Hornby Flying Scotsman,

    Great review of a really nice Flying Scotsman.Someonecsaid theres has sprung a leak where the bung goes in also i think Hornby should have supplied a couple of spare bungs in the detailing pack as i can see a few of these bungs going missing.Hirnby should also carry spares in case anyone loses theres.but great review

      Apologies for the delayed response, I totally agree the bung is so small during the filming I dropped on to the track and very difficult to find. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

    An excellent overview of this locomotive here Dusty Shelf Collectables, I can certainly see why you are very happy with this, I myself would like to try out the steam generator, I already have tried out the HM7000 system though as at the beginning of June I purchased a 21 pin and 8 pin sound decoder and fitted them to a heljan DP2 and Hornby Class 50 and as you say it is a game changer, I really like the HM7000 system and will be getting more of those sound chips when I can, as for the steam generator as I say I would like to try it! What I’m hoping for although it may never happen is I’m hoping hornby will release it as a separate item so then we can fit it to locos that are designed to take it, for example I have one of the new black 5s and one of those later this year is going to be released with the steam generator so for me with me already owning one of the black 5s which I do intend to fit sound to using the HM7000 it would be good if the steam generator is potential released as a separate item for us to fit to models designed to take it, good video,overall, hope you get lots more enjoyment out of this model.

      Many thanks for the kind words. I do like the idea of a separately sold steam generator, Just thinking about loco retrofitted and not to mention how it could be added to a yard seen, with steam coming from a shed, Unfortunately may not happen, I am reading that the P2 and Scotsman have different water capacities so I guess the fitting is very specific but at least the 7000 system is interchangeable and very good. Thanks again Matt

    I have one of these and tbh, I think I'm going to be sending it back. Like yours, I've noticed that the smoke box door isn't on flush. They're not glued on and only rely on the railings at the top to hold the door in place. This means that the bottom keeps popping out. I've also found that water leaks out of the smokebox door and forms a waterfall at the front of the loco when running at the higher speeds. Putting the smokebox door back in place properly doesn't help as the pressure of the pump pushing water on to the atomiser is pushing the bottom of the smokebox door open. I've contacted Hornby and apparently changing CV211 to value 60 and CV212 to value 45 should resolve the leak problem (I guess they reduce the force of the pump). After doing this, I didn't see any improvement and like you've said, I've also had the issue with the chimney getting clogged, which means I'm regularly having to blow air on it to get rid of the bubble that forms. The last straw was after I filled it for the last time and no steam came out at all. I pulled out the water plug to check the level and found it was empty. I then lifted the loco and found that water had been pouring out from the bottom of the boiler. I find it rather ridiculous that this hasn't been designed so that the water is properly sealed within the model and is able to leak out from a number of places. It's such a disappointment after two years of waiting.

      Oh dear, Unfortunaly it does sound like you may need a rtn, I've not had water running out on mine, but now I worry about the longevity of the model. The smoke box door is annoying, I spent some time looking at it and the only fix I can see is glue and I wont do that. It is a shame after waiting 2 years but I guess it takes these bugs to allow the pushing of boundary's in the hobby. When it works I still think it a game changer. Anyway thanks for watching and taking the time to share you experience, I will be interested to know if Hornby can fix if you return.

    Now all they've got to do is add the illuminated lamps and you've got the whole package. Waiting for either a GWR or Southern loco to get a smoke generator and I'll have one.
    Modeloco had the same issue and Hornby sent him info regarding CV's. Might be worth watching his video about that.

      @dustyshelfcollectables  9 дней назад

      Yes the illuminated lamps would be good, and I am sure A GWR will be released sooner or later. Thanks for the tip about the CV code, I saw the advice from Modeloco last week and gave it a try it made it better but not a fix. I have posted a video of my findings if you are interested. I am still playing and in the process of pushing the cv's further. Anyway thanks for watching and the message.

    I always liked the look of the Flyinc Scotsman, it is just regal. I was excited to hear about the steam generator and thought we had a replacement for the old oil burning type, but your report of the clogging quelched that enthusiasm. What a perfect addition to any collection after a substantial wait. Great video, Jersey Bill

      Hi bill, Its a lovely engine, I got on the fool plate at the national railway museum earlier this year which was fun. I can see past the clogging as when it works is is so well done, really different in person to the old smoke generators, I am sketching out a video at the moment to compare the old and new, hopefully in a couple of weeks. Thanks as always! Matt

      @@user-uk8jr6zc9l The Box does NOT indeed say Flyinc Scotsman.
      The G, for some reason on Flying Scotsman, looks more like a C than it does a G, and the box is representative of that but it most certainly isn’t a C. It is the font of the lettering, nothing to do with the box.

    I had the same problem with my P2. If you use filtered water it solves the problem. It seems to be impurities in the water congealing and forming a film over the hole in the chimney. Hope this helps.

    Thank you for the review. I received mine yesterday but unfortunately still in the box. ( Not for long)I purchased the Prince of Wales last month interesting it’s says 5ml max capacity on this one yet on the flying Scotsman, it’s saying 3ml ? The problem I find with the steam generator i have to run the Loco for while before it kicks in not sure if this is right. I also have the black five on order like you said 2 1/2 years is a long time and I believe it isn’t due for another few months yet. Thanks again for another great review all the best, Carl.

      Hi Carl Hopefully you have had a chance to run your Scotsman, Interesting about the capacities, It does raise a few questions never the less when working its amazing. I had the issue of not working initially but one past that I only have the issue of blocking. I've also got the black five on order, 2 1/5 years on, I will have to see if I have the cash for that one when it finally arrives. Anyway thanks for watching and taking the time to comment/ Matt

    Great video review of this stunning locomotive. When you fill up do you use tap or distilled water? I can remember the days of old car batteries of long ago, when we used distilled water and not tap to top up the individual cells.

    Hi Dusty, great review. Did you manage to sort the fire box door?.... In the close ups, it shows that it has dropped down (I wonder what is actually holding it on) and so it is not in-line with the aperture in the smoke box; That is why it would not close when you tried to press it into place. cheers for now Derek

    • @dustyshelfcollectables
      @dustyshelfcollectables  19 дней назад

      Hi Dereck, I've not gone back to it yet, I need a bit of time to carefully investigate, there a several very fragile parts around it and with my eyes will need a magnifier. Ideally shouldn't have to look into fixes but in the big scheme of the loco you do really have to look for the Issue so not the end of the world. Thanks for the advice and also for watching. Matt

    Hi
    If you have a look at modeloco review of this loco i think he has a fix for the water clogging i think you need to change cv211 from 65 to 60 which should stop the clogging if you have a look at part two of the Flying Scotsman he explains it all in the steam fix video hop this helps

    Is the reverser etc on the wrong side of the cab? Or was Scotsman once right hand drive?

    • @davidstrains4910
      @davidstrains4910 19 дней назад +1

      As originally built as an A1 Flying Scotsman was right hand drive, it wasn’t converted to left hand drive in 1947 when it was overhauled and rebuilt to an A3, this model depicts it with the earlier British railways crest so dates this model to 1949 to 1956.

      I believe there is an intention to sell the steam generator as a separate item so a side it will always come with a Hm700 0 decoder. But if you have a phone or alike with Bluetooth I would recommend trying the controls in the App, I personally found them quite good.
