Conwy Valley Miniature Railway- is it the longest £2.50 ride?

Just opposite Betws-Y-Coed mainline station is the Conwy Valley Miniature Railway. Sadly, no steam on the day that we were there, but we got a full value trip around the museum site. This little train ride literally goes for miles and great value for families at just £2.50 each and still very popular. Join me for a ride on the train. #modelrailway #steamrailway
Conwy Valley Railway Museum, Betws Y Coed was it £2 well spent ?

A fairly small attraction and you don't get anything for £2 anymore. However, while I really enjoyed my visit (and lets face it, I can spend hours looking at trains), the attraction has some work on going and a few of the push buttons were not working. If you go in expecting the world for £2 you may be disappointed, but if you go there understanding that this is part of the fabric of Holidaying...

Sorry I Can Not justify £450 on the all new Hornby version so lets repair run and enjoy one ten times cheaper and from a vintage era. I have had this loco for a while, a non runner, I was mailed an advert for the new release Hornby version and while I am sure there will be a vast improvement, I can not justify £400 to find out so I will have to settle with this much older version. #modelrailway...

I've just got into trains since taking early retirement. I'm only 56 and quite comfortable off. I've got a spare room and now that I live a!one I can do what I want without being nagged to death.😁 but I was expecting to pay something like £65/85 for a class 43. I think I will just stick to watching trains on RUclips and I can get an veterans railcard and jump down to Portsmouth and see a few old shipmates who settled there after the navy. I live in Glasgow so I'm spoilt for railway connections.

Youve allways got the option to replace the motor with cd motor. Theres is also the option of lighting kit upgrades to give you directional red tail lighting which are very cheap. If you want to upgrade to dcc its very easy to. If you have the older hst, stick with it and upgrade it

So... some of the price increase is inflation. Some of the price increase is due to everything coming with DCC and sound (or at least DCC-compatible circuitry and a built-in speaker) out of the box. But some of it's just, well... I'm not necessarily going to say greed outright because there can be a few other reasons why a company might do this, ranging from corporate greed to shareholder demands and even a poorly thought-out attempt to simply get out of a deficit without concern for the inevitable decrease in sales, but it's arbitrary price hikes.

Hornby slit cars are dilly money now. Scalextric are in the £50/55 range, nice bodyshells but rubbish underneath unless its magnets on a home track. Slot it at £62/65 are much more sccurate and handle really well. My HST dates from a new purchse in about 1980 from a Manchester city centre model shop. Runs with Jouef coaches i bought at the same time, still happy with it ..

I found a comment on TripAdvisor titled 'Help this shop and museum before its gone for good' which was added in March this year. Sadly it does sound as if this place is on its last legs, according to the review the owner is in his 90's and I guess that no one has the cash reserves to take it on and invest what's needed to bring it back to life. We visited back in 2022 and everything was looking pretty tired then but it was still a lovely place to visit. Unfortunately the miniature tramway had been closed down due to a fallen tree having smashed some of the infrastructure which wasn't going to be repaired. I guess we can only hope that what's left can be saved and revived in some way.

I resto-modified a pair of HST power cars the same as these many years ago, I fitted newer motors to both cars that came from the newer Virgin HST power cars along with the newer bogie sets with all wheel electrical power pickups, the newer motors did not use traction tyres. I also fitted bi-directional LED lights. The reason for two power cars was because the single bogie drive of the old Hornby power car was incapable of hauling a prototypical rake of 7-9 coaches, even the shorter Hornby supplied mark 3s that came with the sets. The newer Hornby models are far superior to the old stock but at over £400 they are way over priced for what is essentially a loco & a coach.

The missing loco is a large possibly 10in gauge Britannia. It was there last year. Yes the large North West area in the 1950s in M gauge has gone. In my opinion the museum is one of the best railway attractions going and still retaining its charm of a family run attraction. Over the past 2-3 years it has been in need of some maintenance , however I guess that the costs involved are quite challenging. Great model shop. I hope that it keeps going.

The new HSTs with the modern chassis are far superior to the models you have there. Yes £400 is very pricey but the models you have there are frankly rubbish by todaý standard. Its like claiming the Accurascale Deltic is overpriced at £180 odd because you can buy a Lima Deltic from 1980 for £30. The argument doesn't stand up. I have two full HSTs. One is of the latest type, all singing. The other the last of the ringfield types made in China with superior finish and blackened wheels etc. These are worth modernizing with the light kit and replacment motor kit. The dummy has also been powered so gives a good performance. The origonal models with the 'short' coaches are well past there sell buy date.

    • @dustyshelfcollectables
      @dustyshelfcollectables 3 дня назад

I am not comparing the price of the old with the new and I expect the new one to be far far superior. I was posing the question what can you do to a 125 shape loco to justify the cost. The New 9F is amazing with so many separate parts sound flickering fire box and motion and yet its much cheaper. I am interested to know, what's been done on the 125, working springs moving fans detailed Cab, if it has two motors then that goes some way and someone said also two decoders. Anyway many thahks for watching and taking the time to message.

I too really like to support Hornby, and recently purchased 2 Hornby Diesel locos with HM7000 already installed, admittedly Railroad Plus, but they look good enough on the layout, and cost under GBP100, I just added a bit of weight and installed a Blackcat lighting chip and it's still an inexpensive entry level model. I totally agree with you on the price of the Class 43, it must of covered its initial tooling cost a thousand times over, and even though it is a new tooling it doesn't justify GBP450. The thing I notice is that all prices are going up, or will go up, but Hornby gets all the flack, and in some cases unjustified, the new management aren't fools, but the company is in a dire financial state, and has recently, and is still conducting fire sales through the retailers (as are Heljan), hopefully they will pull through, and sales so far this year are looking up, and their financiers are still willing to back them, so fingers crossed. As a comparison, I bought a Heljan Class 57, on sale at GBP109 , a good loco, added an HM7000 decoder, great! However, all the great buffer detail was pre-fitted, which meant stripping the buffer at least on one end to get a coupling in the NEM pocket, also with the RRP of GBP159, for an old tooling, is a bit rich, however, with a few things that could have been addressed with a new tooling, then perhaps the GBP159 would be justified. ......Drew

For about £225 pounds, you can add a sound DCC chip into the HST with some of the great speakers available, your neighbour will be thinking there's a Class 43 about to crash through the adjoining wall, they're that loud these days! Plus, Oxford Rail was selling MKIiI coaches at great prices, even brand new, to make a complete HST set for the same price. A few years ago, whilst I was in the trade, I used to shudder at three things Hornby did. They had a captive market with pre-orders, I don't think they understood this or if they did never conveyed to the marketplace. If they'd delivered when they promised, under promised and over delivered, everyone would have been happy! Having a consistent pricing banding for various wheel arrangements. Between Hornby's three Brands Hornby, Railroad, Oxford Rail, you could have various levels of detail per brand and priced accordingly. To take people to the next level you could brought the Airfix range back and have as a self detailing model c/w instructions on how to do it!

All very true. I like the idea of using railroad. oxford and Hornby as tiered detail I guess they kind of do that with railroad but to introduce Airfix self detailing packs is a grate idea. I do need to explore some of the other sound options out there. Anyway many thanks for watching and taking the time to message.

I have 6 sets of the old Hornby and Lima HSTs, I love em. I have the original "Correct length coaches" (longer), before they were shrunk and manufactured with acetate sides, I also aquired 2 full sets including First and Buffet in Virgin livery but these were manufactured with the shorter length coaches. I agree that the pricing for the newer models is a tad too much, especially since the older models can be improved consideably by a competant modeller. I got my first HST in 1982 and its still running fine 42 years later.

I am much the same still have my original from 40 years ago and several sets with both long and short coaches, not sure if Hornby or lima though. And as you say doesn't take a lot to add detail. I forgot when filming the coaches in the video I filled with light that turn on with a magnet, rally look good going round. The 40th anniversary pack released in 2016 was £179.99 new. 8 years later, I know there are some tooling improvements and it has the TXS sound but that is still well above inflation. I'm glad I got my Anniversary pack in 2017 for £149.99, even though I still have my original blue set from when I was 3, the 2010 on model is much better.

If both units were motorised, then maybe over £400, but no, I just update the lighting with led`s and use 2 driving units from 2 sets bought on ebay wire them for 8 pin decoders buy 2 normal decoders or 2 HM 7000, job done and they run awesome.

    • @dustyshelfcollectables

I agree if both were motorised that would go some way to explain the cost - 2 set from ebay - a great idea. Anyway may thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

Its a great HST model and Hornby released this in their 1986 range of model trains. As much as I like Hornby, they have and are continuing to price a lot of us out of the hobby and I would also like to mention the Lima version from the 1980's is also a good alternative as Lima did one of the best HST models of the 1980's. I did hear that Hornby are having financial problems but as of late, they continue to keep on upping the prices and closing off more and more of us that want to support them. I will just hold off for a sale and I will buy from Cavalex Models and Accurascale as they do give value back to the customer. Great video mate and all the best. Peter.

Hi Peter many thanks for your kind words, indeed it seams like a bad situation, up go the prices we buy less, then up go the prices and around we go again, the bit I don't understand are discounts, point schemes and fire sales, sure I will take advantage of them but at my age gimmicks have no influence on the trains I buy. Last Christmas Hornby were offering a free charismas tree of all things. Anyway many thanks for watching. Matt.

Hornby CEO: "We need to increase our profit margins, we're losing money. Let's increase our prices." Later... Hornby's Financial Department: "We're still losing money" Hornby CEO: "Why's that? We're making more money per sale." Hornby's Sales Department: "Yeah, but our sales have fallen because people no longer see any value in our products." Hornby CEO: "Lets raise prices even further to compensate." Hornby's Financial Department: "That sounds like a good idea!" Hornby's Sales Department: "Uh, guys? You're kinda missing the point..." Later: Hornby's Financial Department: "Apparently that didn't work. We're still losing money." Hornby's Sales Department: "Gee, I wonder why?" Hornby's CEO: "It's because our prices are still too low, we need higher margins." Hornby's Sales Department: "I'm surrounded by idiots."

Sad to see such junk on the market and to think they have the audacity to ask an insane amount of money for it. It's just terrible to see such garbage come on the market. Glad I model narrow gauge and don't ever have to consider this. It's like the 1970's all over again with what are literally toy trains that were cheap and nasty. I reall the junk that LIMA made only too well.

@@dustyshelfcollectables Sorry for being so brutal in my assessment of the model. I just cannot understand why they charge so much for a model of this calibre. I live in Canada and see some of the British models including Hornby at various train shows. I have been in the hobby for more than 50 years and have always modelled in O Scale Narrow Gauge and was fortunate to be able to buy brass locomotives. I always sought out a used model and then completely reworked them from new gears, motors and now in recent times have switched all my locomotives to battery power with radio control. I have my own RUclips Channel showing my layout you can view it if you search my name. I will take a look at you small England loco.
