I believe the math book story that Matt recalled went one step further (at least it did in the version of the anecdote I had heard). Not only did the Queen want Carroll's next book, she wanted the book to have her in the dedication. So it was an advanced math theory book that opened with "Dedicated to Her Majesty, the Queen."
I haven't seen this version before! If you ever want to revisit the story, I'd recommend Jan Svankmajer's Alice from 1988. It's kind of a stop motion nightmare, but it's a pretty fascinating movie to watch. Anything from Jan Svankmajer usually is.
The Cheshire Cat from the Disney version scared my sister as a kid. I can't imagine if she saw this one. Also Matt's scared reaction is one of my favorite Basement moments now.
Will Vinton. He made a movie, ‘Adventures of Mark Twain’ (1985) which is strange and brilliant. 80s kids movie with all the weirdness that that implies.
Paramount wasn't just broke they were dirt broke. They literally gave the crying turtle a cow head and insect arms. Even Cary Grant would be like "can I Cry?"
In Kingpin, the scene where they are pulled over on the side of the road on a bridge and arguing was filmed down the road where I grew up. 528 bridge across Lake Aurther Moraine State Park PA. We used to drag race across that bridge in high school.
A lot of the effects in this are surprising good for the time this was made. I mean I've seen similar effects in movies and TV shows that came out after this that are terrible but I usually excuse them because I always figured that was the best they could do for the time period. The walking into the mirror effect was especially impressive. I've seen another live action Alice in Wonderland where it obviously wasn't even a mirror but a doorway with an identical room on the other side. And I know it's not a mirror because Alice doesn't have a reflection. But this, Alice is literally walking into her own reflection. The shrinking and growing effects are also very well done. I think this was before blue screens were a thing and I'm pretty sure they had to make sets at different sizes but it looks better than having her standing in front of a blue screen or green screen and adding a background in post. There was also a trick they use to do in older movies where they projected an image of a background on a rear projector but that also created some disconnect of feeling like the actor isn't really there. I don't know how they did the effects for this but it's really impressive for this time period. Everything I'm thinking of for how they could have done it using practical effects I'm pretty sure either weren't possible at the time or were some how done worse in movies that came after this. The costumes are terrible and exactly what I expect for the time period but the effects are actually pretty impressive.
No problem, anytime maaaaan! Would you like to buy a fine McGuffin? Or have any old ones just laying around? My wife started a McGuffen refurbish and repurpose boutique. Named it “My Muffins McGuffins”. For when you don’t quite know what you’re looking for. We’ll tear this place apart holding everything up to Greg till he nods in approval!
Cary Grant made his breakthrough early in 1933 via "She Done Him Wrong" with Mae West ("Alice" was released at the end of the year), but it can be argued the full-on Cary Grant persona wasn't completely formed until 1935's "Sylvia Scarlett."
ahh there's nothing like that vintage 1930s ""whimsy"". I'd accuse the filmmakers of purposely trying to horrify children if every single thing made for children back then wasn't like this
So excited for this; Alice is one of my favorite stories to see/read adaptations of, and have never seen this version. What a treat to have your commentary.
8:17 If you’d like to hear more voice acting of the caliber that Craig is describing that *also* involves a cat, I’d like to suggest “Mary Crawford’s” masterpiece, A Talking Cat?!?.
My wife and I saw this in a theater and it was both the most boring and the most trippy version we have seen so far. My Seen It for you. Ralph Baskhi's Lord Of The Rings. Imperfect in a lot of ways but I also think it captures the essence of the books better than the Jackson movies.
Well congratulations guys, this movie was probably the most horrifying thing I've ever seen. Such a strange experience to laugh so much during the experience! Thanks for the experience, guys.
Wow i remember watching “The Interrogation” years ago, i really liked it 😁 and yeah… Maker Studios… one of the saddest success stories i ever witnessed, as Shaycarl was one of the first YT channels i followed back in the day, way before the crushing weight of “success” took hold 🙁 It’s a good thing you guys never had to deal with that! 😜 (jk, jk 😊) Edit: 12:51 RIP Humpty-Hump & Shock-G 😇
Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut is Redux without the awful scene where they meet up with the Playmates again and a tighter plantation sequence. It's a better paced Redux
I had the chance to watch this in a W.C. Fields collection. I rather enjoyed this, but the sort of grotesque nature of it all made it more bizarre and fun for me. Some of the casting was definitely misplaced but it definitely tried to do a lot with what they had.
I've heard a theory that the entire reason why Carroll made the world of Wonderland a place of complete nonsense was that it was meant as an allegory for how he thought the newly invented Calculus was nonsense.
Matt mentioned watching „Everything, Everywhere at The Same Time” in the morning. I have a question for you guys - does it matter for you what time you watch a movie? For me that would somehow affect my reception of the movie, with late evenings being the best time for them. If I watched anything in the morning, I feel I would be annoyed by it from the get go.
I definitely enjoy going to big blockbusters on a Sunday morning or something, I still feel as intensely but just with fewer people who don’t really care about being there
There are no levels or compelling reasons to push the story along because on shrooms its very very suddenly obvious that life is optional and almost everything we do we do for some silly made up human reason. We cant stand to sit in silence for 5 minutes Thats torture We must always move on to the next thing But if you do shrooms And you meditate You’ll realize its all a strange trap-like dream. Alan watts could tell you more haha

Oh man, that would be amazing to see them watch that movie
Ooh that one is so creepy! Actually, I think I should go watch it again.
". . . said the White Rabbit."
"Shamlessly beating the baby... and she is loving it" Matt, How you made that line - Perfection
The Cheshire Cat from the Disney version scared my sister as a kid. I can't imagine if she saw this one.
Also Matt's scared reaction is one of my favorite Basement moments now.
That was the longest episode of The Mighty Boosh I've ever seen.
I remember watching Film 101 when it came out and I really enjoyed it! I’m always glad to see you guys trying new things
Same here.
That THING at 15:08 looks like one of those raisin cartoon commercial characters from the 80s.
Will Vinton. He made a movie, ‘Adventures of Mark Twain’ (1985) which is strange and brilliant. 80s kids movie with all the weirdness that that implies.

I never thought I could be impressed by a three second clip of Matt shoving a stuntman's head into a table. But damn, the guy really sold it. Props.
In Kingpin, the scene where they are pulled over on the side of the road on a bridge and arguing was filmed down the road where I grew up. 528 bridge across Lake Aurther Moraine State Park PA. We used to drag race across that bridge in high school.
Well, this was certainly the loudest Basement episode in a while (I listened on my headphones, and Matt nearly burst my eardrums a couple of times!) 😅

This is hands down one of my favorite episodes. Ya both killed it.
Film 101 was something I was really hoping would get made. That pilot you shared is a favorite of mine on this RUclips stream.
That ending was terrifying, if I had watched that as a kid I would have nightmares for years
No problem, anytime maaaaan! Would you like to buy a fine McGuffin? Or have any old ones just laying around? My wife started a McGuffen refurbish and repurpose boutique.
Named it “My Muffins McGuffins”.

I died laughing when the Red Queen started choking Alice out.

One of my favorite versions is the 1999 TV movie. The cast is amazing.
One of the last Gene Wilder performances.
@@TheLastAngryGeek everything he did had such depth, especially his children’s movie roles. His small part in ‘The Little Prince’ was heart wrenching.
To me that's the only good adaption. Martin Short as Mad Hatter is genius casting
@@locnar1 Oof. I was going to look it up until Martin Short was mentioned.
Another good background vinyl would have been Steve Martin's, "Let's Get Small" stand-up. 🙂
I love when you watch "bad" movies. lmao "Was there a director???"
That was genuinely frightening. But a great episode!
LOVE the reviews guys, so does my girlfriend ! she said you remind her of 'Mystery Science Theater 3000' 👍
Seen it: Maniac? Man, was that movie unpleasant. The pov was incredible. I never thought that Elijah Wood would frighten me, but here we are.
It’s actually a remake of a 1980s movie by the same name “maniac” haven’t seen the Elijah wood one in a while, gonna have to check it out
@@vincentzombi3916 didn't know that. Is it also shot in the pov of the maniac?
I didn’t know WC Fields Humpty Dance was something I needed
So excited for this; Alice is one of my favorite stories to see/read adaptations of, and have never seen this version. What a treat to have your commentary.
These are the kinds of movies you love to catch after midnight randomly. Happy Friday everyone!
All the characters look terrifying but talk so weirdly normal and casual it kind of drains all the horror away
8:17 If you’d like to hear more voice acting of the caliber that Craig is describing that *also* involves a cat, I’d like to suggest “Mary Crawford’s” masterpiece, A Talking Cat?!?.
As always, Love the Smiths reference!
Great episode guys
Pretty sure later down the line both Gary Cooper and Cary Grant would look back at a photo of them in this and say the Shaggy line "that wasn't me".
My wife and I saw this in a theater and it was both the most boring and the most trippy version we have seen so far.
My Seen It for you. Ralph Baskhi's Lord Of The Rings. Imperfect in a lot of ways but I also think it captures the essence of the books better than the Jackson movies.
It would summon King Candy!
Gonna have to do a supercut of all smiths references in WTTB one of these days 12:56
Well congratulations guys, this movie was probably the most horrifying thing I've ever seen. Such a strange experience to laugh so much during the experience! Thanks for the experience, guys.
Never thought I’d see Matt simulate smoking a bong but there that is

Hi guys, love the show. Collateral, seen it? I think it’s great!
Great video.
Can we get the anime movie Redline for cartoon june??
I had the chance to watch this in a W.C. Fields collection. I rather enjoyed this, but the sort of grotesque nature of it all made it more bizarre and fun for me. Some of the casting was definitely misplaced but it definitely tried to do a lot with what they had.
Sterling Holloway was a Disney player for years, I think he does some narration in Saludos Amigos
15:32 Why You Little!!!
I stared in everything believe it or it.
You guys need to watch Jan Svankmajer's version of this story. It's awesome, but maybe even creepier than this version.
I was going to say that. ‘Něco z Alenky’ (1988). It’s a weird, haunting and beautiful film.
Man this film is truly disturbing, I was cringing right at the same time Matt was
I’d love to see you guys check out Return to Oz, if you haven’t already, and hear your thoughts on it. Is it really too scary for kids?
And here I was, thinking Carol Channing's White Queen was the craziest.
I know because of reasons Film 101 only had a pilot. Regardless, I loved the pilot! Love you all and all that you do. 👍
Wait a minute... a movie where nothing happens, with ANOTHER story within the story? This is just "Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny"!
What a headtrip.
Holy crap I was litterally talking with a friend about this movie
I've heard a theory that the entire reason why Carroll made the world of Wonderland a place of complete nonsense was that it was meant as an allegory for how he thought the newly invented Calculus was nonsense.
So you’re telling me that in unboxing I’m going to see more horrifying moments from this movie? Ehhhh 🫠
Alice has a sampler? Akai or one from EMU?
Hello, Matt and Craig. Have either of you ever seen the British film 'Winstanley' (1975). I would be surprised if you have.
Matt, if “going down the/a rabbit hole” has become too overused for you, might I suggest we substitute “drank from the firehose” as a nod to UHF?
Dr Robotnik!!! 13:57
What was the reference about at 7:08?
I believe Matt said Siddhartha
@@theasiaticcheetah what is Siddhartha?
@@stevensedlak Founder of Buddhism; also the name of a Herman Hesse poem.
Harmon-Ising. Bwahahaha!
Looks like Cary got the short end of the razor.

I used to feel that way. Now I prefer during the day. Now that I'm older , I don't have the focus to watch a film and enjoy it during the evening.
8:38 Felix The Cat Clock!!!
Did David Lynch see this as a lad?
,
I somehow doubt that matt has done psychedelic mushrooms but if anyone ever watches the older alice in wonderlands, theyre all about tripping.
I think both Mr. Winnie-the-Pooh and that baby were in The Gold Diggers of 1933.
The clock says 4:20
Don't do shrooms kids.
4:58 Pre Beauty and The Beast Cogsworth there?
This movie seems to have something of strange, disconnected, and even nightmarish quality of the books!
when is welcome to the basement going 4k? also #justiceforguse
Lewis didn't really like the ladies more than the little girls... don't know if that game was his of tea. Hahaha

They're singing "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane. Look it up, it's good.
Seems like this is a movie hard to pull off (tone wise) with the complete absence of color.
I’d much rather watch the 1999 made for TV movie.
Hieroglyphs is plural noun, hieroglyphic is adjective, descriptive of writing. Just sayin’
Oh god…this isn’t the x rated one, is it?
