"Play Possum Up a Gumtree!" Few people realize that "Possum Up a Gumtree" was the "Stairway to Heaven" of it's day, and that Basil Rathbone was known for doing a killer version on the violin. But Craig knew.
I really like Easy Rider because there’s always something new I can glean from it, but I think it’s the kind of film that’s more fun to think about and talk about than it is to actually watch over again.
i'd love a comparison to the british produced "Hound of the Baskervilles" , released half a century later - it's originally a tv show but it's a feature length special and stars, to me, the greatest Holmes of all time, Jeremy Brett. Have you seen any of the "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" from the 80s?
I love Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Terror by Night, Pearl of Death, Woman in Green, & Dressed to Kill are my favorite with Basil.
For the ultimate spooky Rathbone/Bruce Holmes outing, “The Scarlet Claw” is definitely the way to go. All the atmosphere and suspense of this version of _Hound_ but cranked up to 11 😱 And yes, that includes a glowing monster in B&W 😉
Great episode guys! I wasn't familiar with this story so I paused the episode to go watch it. Went in colder than I expected: I always thought Baskerville was a place, not a family name!
3:24 Either an Inverness cape or Ulster coat, depending on the source, and deerstalker cap. Also if there's anything stashed in that copy of A Farewell to Arms, he might have need for his Calabash pipe.
Yes! Matt's thoughts on Easy Rider the movie (not the porn mag) are exactly my thoughts! I enjoyed the Criterion documentary on Easy Rider more than the actual movie, but I appreciate the importance of Easy Rider.
Great Neil Young album in the background. Down By The RIver and Cowgirl in the Sand on same album! The Byrds covered Cowgirl in the sand... in the 60's they did a lot of Dylan covers... but they believed Young was to be the Poet of the 70's.
The package has been mailed! I did it though not before this week's episode dropped. Just saw The Batman in theaters and I must say, the return to long form noir is welcomed from me (welcomed to the basement)
A spookier story in the Rathbone/Bruce is The Scarlet Claw--- someone (or someTHING) is killing people in a foggy Canadian village by ripping their throats out with the titular appendage. Its generally consider the best of the Universal produced films.
Definitely my favorite of that series, as it really leans into the spooky atmosphere and horror elements… plus in that film the monster actually DOES glow! 😱
The Cushing/Lee movie puts an unsatisfactory twist on the classic story. Cushing did a much more faithful version in the 1960s BBC series. But as the Hound goes, the best version might by Jeremy Brett’s.
Seen it - The Aviator? I'm not a big fan of this film, I think Leonardo Decaprio sometimes just can't commit to the character. A lot of the CGI is really dated, and that throws off the film in some scenes. But the big crash was really intense and it had John C Riely in it, so it's worth watching for him. And I never knew Alan Alda could be such a bad guy, wow!
Is it Barryman in the movie because it is Barrymore in the book. I had a "violent start," as Watson was fond of saying, every time you said Barryman (only slightly exaggerating).
These old movies made Watson so thick. If he were in the States in the era he likely would have been committed to some new age sanitorium for daily enemas and lots of cornflakes to cure whatever brain issues he was obviously suffering from.
You guys seem underwhelmed by this movie, but there are better Rathbone Sherlocks than this one, which is the first in the series. "The Pearl of Death" I think is the best one. Matt says that he wanted to see more "eccentricity" but I would contend that Rathbone's resistance to being eccentric is what makes his Sherlock one of the best. So many actors fall into the trap of making Sherlock way too weird and affected until you can't take him seriously. In my opinion Jeremy Brett is easily the worst offender, Cumberbatch is also guilty of this at times .
It's kind of funny you say that because two very big Sherlock fan friends of mine think Brett is the best Sherlock period. Not saying you're wrong or anything like that, I just find it intriguing with how certain Sherlock fans stand is all.
It's suppose it's kinda like Doctor Who, everyone is gonna have their own vision of the character because he's been around so long. I just personally don't connect to Brett's portrayal, I prefer a down to earth Sherlock.
It is not painted. A few months ago, I had a couple of fingers pinched in a closing garage door, between the boards. It did not feel good, and I do not recommend it. One of the nails turned black, but it is growing out and should be back to normal soon.
I know you're not fans of Monsieur Goddard, but have you seen Masculin Feminin? It's the one film of his where the Marksist musings and philosophical discussions between characters actually work. It's engaging, melancholic and not annoying unlike The Weekend, which was on the show. Plus, how can you not fall in love with Chantal Goya who's playing Madelaine? I've never seen anyone on film as beautiful as she was.
Seen it? Robocop 3. What the Hell happened? Robert John Burke did not capture the magic of Peter Weller. It was far too cartoony. The villain was annoying and lame. What a terrible way to end the Robocop Trilogy.
"Play Possum Up a Gumtree!" Few people realize that "Possum Up a Gumtree" was the "Stairway to Heaven" of it's day, and that Basil Rathbone was known for doing a killer version on the violin. But Craig knew.
I'm now imagining Sherlock Holmes using a large microscope to look at clues instead of a magnifying glass. Good one, Matt!
I really like Easy Rider because there’s always something new I can glean from it, but I think it’s the kind of film that’s more fun to think about and talk about than it is to actually watch over again.
I just realized I've been donating rolling to you guys for a long time. The time sure does fly!
Every time I heard your name I thought you were 2 people, BA and Mikey D.
@@PinheadLarryVEVO nope. Just me! Lol.
My dog got into my spice rack. Now he's an everything beagle!
14:47 "Oh I notice, by your handkerchief, that you grew up in Somalia..." made coffee come out of my nose.

I live next to dartmoor and it never ceases to amaze me how none of the depictions of dartmoor are actually filmed there or look anything like it
I love Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Terror by Night, Pearl of Death, Woman in Green, & Dressed to Kill are my favorite with Basil.
“He just played the opening of Stairway to Heaven!” Damn, that was funny
I AM SO EXCITED!!!! I adore Basil Rathbone's Holmes, he's up there with Jeremy Brett for me!!! Ahhhhh
Just watched this one the other night! What a treat. Happy Friday everyone!
I look forward to the "Moors in the Basement" playlist: "The Wolfman," "Wuthering Heights," this...
(and yes, Stapleton does drown in the Grimpen Mire)
.... American Werewolf In London ...
The Secret Garden
I live for Fridays!
Thanks for all you do, guys!
MY BOOK!!!!!!!
In this weird way I feel like Craig and I are collaborating on the next episode. And yes, we are officially buddies now
Throw in a little Audio-Tune and the Basement's "More Than a Feeling" redux will be their album's breakout hit.
You had me at "MORE than a FEELIN"
I have actually rewatched this version of Hound of the Baskervilles once or twice over the years. Once was enough for Easy Rider though.
For the ultimate spooky Rathbone/Bruce Holmes outing, “The Scarlet Claw” is definitely the way to go. All the atmosphere and suspense of this version of _Hound_ but cranked up to 11 😱 And yes, that includes a glowing monster in B&W 😉

Yes Stapleton does drown in the mire in the short story.
Name your kid Sherlock and sarcasm will follow him all his days.

If you're both familiar, what do you think of the Jeremy Brett version in comparison with this?
Moving on with plays into movies: Le Tartuffe (1984) by and with Gérard Depardieu? Seen it?
Alright, I’m starting a band named “Basement Beethoven”!
Great Neil Young album in the background. Down By The RIver and Cowgirl in the Sand on same album!
The Byrds covered Cowgirl in the sand... in the 60's they did a lot of Dylan covers... but they believed Young was to be the Poet of the 70's.
You two are on your A game
The package has been mailed! I did it though not before this week's episode dropped. Just saw The Batman in theaters and I must say, the return to long form noir is welcomed from me (welcomed to the basement)
Possum up a Gum Tree is my favorite track from Basement Beethoven. I was into them before they went mainstream.
Have you seen the thematically similar movie ‘Brotherhood of the Wolf’ (2001)
What's the funniest thing that Craig could hide in his A Farewell to Arms book safe? I vote for a copy of The Art of War.
If I'm not mistaken, the Holmes hat is called a deerstalker!
I mean, Ol' Shitty Teeth could finally have an album. That'd be pretty cool. I'd buy it.
I can clearly see in my mind the Hound sitting at the table among the other neighbors.
Basement Beethoven is a pretty good band name
18:57 "the flipside of the summer of white love" - please elaborate, Matt. I'm curious about your historical perspective on the late sixties.
Easy Rider scared me that last scene shudder
The website Middle of Beyond sell a great version of that Farewell to Arms book, a Book of the Dead from Evil Dead to keep all your weeeeeed in :)
Matt you could record an album of Eddie Money covers 😈🥸
also I have a suggestion for the non human category for the hall of fame: kissing 🥰
Have you guys seen Death on the Nile (2022)? I fought it was a solid remake on a classic murder mystery
A spookier story in the Rathbone/Bruce is The Scarlet Claw--- someone (or someTHING) is killing people in a foggy Canadian village by ripping their throats out with the titular appendage. Its generally consider the best of the Universal produced films.

@@Gappasaurus yes. Been awhile since I’ve seen it but I remember it scaring the crap out of me as a kid

You should use the studio recording prize to record a “Righteous Knuckleheads” album !
Basil Rathbone , The Quintessential Holmes.
I’ve always thought Sherlock Holmes was the original Mary Sue. No matter who he’s up against, he’s always bigger, smarter, and stronger.
You should see The Tall Stranger and Jesse James (1939)

If you put your weed stash in that book, then you don't have to worry about people putting severed heads with it like before.
Where’d the mst3k’s behind The Couch go???
Great video.

Jeremy Brett is to Holmes what Peter Dinklage is to Tyrion Lannister.
"This is John Clayton."
Tarzan?
I love I Wanna Hold Your Hand!
(I wouldn't have minded a little comparison with Benedict Cumberbatch's H.O.U.N.D.)
lmao excellent guys
Chekhov's Mire.
Seen It - Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl.
Mister, won't you please help my pony?

Deerstalker.

I prefer Tom Bakers Sherlock from 1982. It's available on DVD, which I have. An old favorite for bed time. ruclips.net/video/NCdJpY5cni0/видео.html
The best Sherlock is Jeremy Brett. He was Sherlock Holmes.
FIRST! LOVE THIS SHOW
Sherlock Holmes' hat is called a 'Deerstalker'.
Gotta do some Chad Vader vids. He’s the hero we _need._
