Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. None of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
The movie announced on Facebook before every new episode. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.
I'm still puzzled why they decided to slightly rewrite/sanitize the dialogue in the English subtitles. In the original, there is no "happily ever after" at the end. Just like in almost all traditional Hungarian folk tales, the ending line is "they lived happily... until they died", which is a decidedly less cheerful conclusion. This is reinforced by the final image, where the modernization represented by the dragons has become reality and Treeshaker (Tree-tearer would be a more accurate translation) is just a fading memory. Also, the gnome is supposed to talk about the size of his dick and balls, not his beard ("koponyányi monyók" meaning "skull sized testicles" and "kapanyelű facika" meaning "hoe handle sized dick").
I had never heard of this movie before, but within seconds of seeing the art style I realized what a huge influence this must have been on Genndy Tartakovsky. The mythology-focused episodes of Samurai Jack have the same trance-like psychedelia, and the fluid design of Aku feels like it would fit perfectly into Son of the White Mare. Plus, since he grew up in Eastern Europe, he was probably a lot more likely to have been exposed to this film than an American animator.

One of the things I find fascinating about this movie is the symbolism. Like, the King and Queen can stand in for a Thundering Mountainous Father god and a Sky Mother goddess whose robes could be studded with stars or snowflakes. The trope of the Three Sons matching the Three Metals, with the youngest equated with gold. Also the three princesses seem to represent the seasons, including the fact that in the Dragons' imprisonment they're at their worst: Autumn (red) is like an over ripe harvest, Summer (green) is weepy with rain, and Spring (yellow) is slow in blooming. And I swear everytime I see it I notice something new.

Also I'd like to add the three sons representing the time of day with the father representing night. (You can see this indication in the film with them walking on water, their reflections reminiscent of the sun setting or rising on water.) I found the correlation between the personality of the two oldest sons and the personality of their counterparts very interesting, too. Such as Stonecrumbler is lazy and incompetent, and his princess is lustful and abrasive. Or Ironrubber's cynical and cold attitude paired with his princess's neuroticism. I wonder why these pairings? But they make perfect sense in a way -- they are reflections of themselves but in the opposite sex.
I was also wondering what was the meaning of Treeshaker not eating the first two meals that were offered in his fight against the dragons, but eating his princess's meal? Also the detail of Treeshaker's princess helping him defeat the dragon is very touching and true to life in a meaningful relationship.
I haven't watched this film in months but at times I reflect on its meanings and the symbols.

@@timmytee734 picking apart the symbolism in this movie is low-hanging fruit though, as it was meant to be that. it is intentionally on-the-nose because it wants you to understand these things. not saying this as a criticism though, i think it is a positive quality.
Also the dragons representing fundamental dangers to mankind - the three-header is natural disasters like volcanoes and earthquakes, the seven-header is wars of all kinds, and the twelve-header all the bad things that come with 'modernity' ie pollution, urban poverty, ugly buildings crowding out nature, etc.
This doesn't have anything to do with the episode, but I was randomly perusing through the Hall Of Fame inductees on the Welcome To The Basement website; I just came across the entry for Gregory Peck, and I am DYING.

I was able to find this movie online and watch it today. It was wild. I loved it so much.
One of my favorite details was character’s faces appearing in the pupils of others when they were looking at each other. Too cool.
This movie is a trip and a half, and I just love it. Yeah it's really weird and you'd die of liver failure if you took a sip every time there was ~Yonic imagery, but it's so beautiful and colourful and hypnotic, there really is nothing like it.
I loooove this movie as well! The art style is amazing. It's psychedelic without taking away from the mythological story. If you ever get a chance to go to Hungary, do it! It's one of my favourite places I've ever visited. It is so unique among European countries - partly because the first people to settle there migrated from Central Asia, which is why the language and mythology are very different from the countries that surround it.
Like Holy Mountain, this is all about alchemy. 12 headed dragon = zodiac. 7 coloured gnome = 7 planets. Three sisters = Fire, Water, Air.
Would imagine "Iron Temperer" flows a lot better in Hungarian.

I still regret that I missed the time I had an opportunity to see this movie in a theater.
I usually watch your videos regardless of whether I've seen the movie, I just love hearing your commentary. But, for this one I'll hold off and come back after I get a blu ray copy, the animation has sold me on it.
The Blu-ray is put out by Arbelos and is 100% worth it! Includes early short films by the director as well that are worth the price alone.

"...and don't get me started on Tiamat". Oh, man. I remember that cartoon from the early 80's. I thought that dragon was so cool.
brand new sub here, and ONLY because you guys have delved into 2 ancient movies that I'd never heard about, but recently discovered and really liked: 'bring me the head of alfredo garcia' and 'the forbin project.' you covered both of them in silly, but very insightful ways. the fact that you're even talking about these two forgotten flicks has won me over. looking forward to more forgotten movies you'll lead me to discover.
FYI - "The Many Saints of Newark" title comes from Tony's uncle's (and later his cousin, Christopher's) last name, "Moltisanti", which is Italian for "many saints".

I never heard of this movie and wasn't sure if i was going to like it but to my surprise i found this to be very enjoyable. I just might have to seek out more foreign animated movies to add to my collection. Thanks for this guys it was fun.

This fairy tale reminds me of a Polish one. It involves twins (Waligóra and Wyrwidąb, who are namesakes and equivalents of Stonecrumbler and Treeshaker) some gnome-like creatures and freeing princesses from dragons, but that's where the similarities end.

I'm sure someone said this already but I believe it's called The Many Saints of Newark because Moltisanti (main character's last name) means Many Saints in italian. Love the show and I have been watching since 2010 but I almost never comment.
I think Good Morning, Vietnam is the only movie to succeed at using What A Wonderful World to underscore violence.

The Many Saints of Newark tells the story of the Moltisanti family (it's even narrated by Chris) and their name translates into "many saints". Hence the title.

In the sopranos, chris's surename is moltisanti or many saints, his father took tony under his wing just as tony took chris under his.
Hey, did you watched the Tragedy of Man from Marcell Jankovics? This is his most daring and gramdious animation movie, the ecranization of the philosophical drama with the same title of Imre Madách, the greatest Hungarian dramaturg. I will be glad to hear your thoughts about it.

I can't sing the praises of "Everything Everywhere" enough. Blew my expectations out of the water and I don't care if it wins zero awards as long as it rekindles Ke Huy Quan's acting career.
I enjoyed it but there were a few things I found unrealistic; like Laundromat Evelyn wouldn't have the pinky strength of Kung-Fu Actress Evelyn. You may have the variants' knowledge but there's no way you'll knock a guy 20 feet without ever having done one pinky push-up.
@@aestevalis0 I don't think the film was going for perfect realism. Also it seemed to imply that experiencing every reality at once granted a person physics-defying cartoonish god-like abilities if their brain didn't break in the process.

Back when I found this movie online for the first time out of curiosity I was in my big SJ Phase. So when I watched it I had the exact same vibes. I still do.
(Also this film and the Director's other works inspired some artwork ideas for me, when I'm in the mood to draw something surreal and challenging.)

Seen It: Le chat du Rabbin or The Rabbi's Cat? Beautiful, french animated movie with a lot of interesting philosophy. It's not a fast paced movie, so I don't think it would be good for the show, but it's funny and smart, so I think you'd like it.
Best case scenario is Silver Dragon but they're not really the princess-kidnapping type.

This is the second griffon movie of this year.
The 7 headed dragon reminded me of the "The Elephant Celebes" by Max Ernst or other larger than life creatures seen in his paintings.

Directed by the Hughes brothers, who insist it isn't in any way a religious movie despite the central premise being the pursuit and protection of a Bible
The only thing I didn't like about EEAAO was how they'd attain the physical abilities of their variants. There's no way Laundromat Evelyn would have the pinky strength of Kung-Fu Actress Evelyn. The only character I'd see being able to do that is Joyful Teriyaki because she could actually swap bodies, as shown by how her clothes would change.
The version I watched online wasn’t the best resolution and the colors were more garish, maybe I should actually get the Blu-Ray.

SEEN IT: (1975) THE MAGIC PONY.Speaking of weird cartoon horse movies this seems like it would be to much of a kids movie but it deals with alot of adult themes.
spoilers for White Men Can't Jump, but I think Kubrick probably liked the story's ending. Woody and Rosie don't end up together. She lays down an ultimatum and Woody breaks it, for a noble reason and he is ultimately successful, but it doesn't matter. She told him not to do the thing and he did it, so she left. He probably also got a kick out of the gangsters staging all of their executions.
Have you seen "What About Bob?"? This movie is weird, because it feels that Bill Murray's character is the antagonist who unrealistically wins constantly. Especially at the end. I don't know whether to root for him or against him.
