There's a pretty marked difference in how people show scorn for art they dislike versus how they show affection for art they like. When talking about something you don't like, it feels so easy to point out its flaws, but if you are truly moved or excited by something, it's hard to put that feeling into words. You want everyone else to feel that feeling for themselves, and you want to just thrust them into it and say, "just trust me, this will be great and you'll love it." But if you can properly convey what you're feeling and why you're feeling it, the enthusiasm that shines through ends up being a lot more powerful than just rattling off criticisms.
I'm glad you ended up having some good things to say about the movie in the end. It indeed stretched believability to the breaking point at times, but I found it effective, and the ending was a total gut punch. Okay, I was younger when I saw it, but I still remember what it felt like!
Honestly, from the start one of the funniest shows you guys have done in a long time! I was in tears laughing at points. As someone in recovery, I can tell you that being able to laugh at things like this is absolutely vital. Also loved Matt’s incredulity that drug addiction can progress so quickly. Bless your heart, my love. You guys are the best. What a fun episode. ❤️❤️ ps - Weed Is the Tom Bombadil of every cautionary drug story. 😏
This is probably my fav video so far from you guys! Had me laughing all throughout it! That abrupt ending about Alice overdosing caught me off guard and your guys reaction to it! 😂
That's a weird look for William Shatner, but I have to admit it does stop you from automatically thinking "There's Captain Kirk" whenever he's on screen.
Hey guys, soo glad you saw Close Up - it is amazing. I would recommend another Iranian film, A Moment of Innocence by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, it is under 90 minutes and is another amazing film from the Iranian New Wave. Love the show - thank you for doin what you’re doin.
I always watched my Dad watch this when I was a youngin, and I genuinely thought you all were way more popular. I’m subscribing because you deserve it.
I read this book in maybe 5th grade and my mom had read it in high school, reread it around 8th grade but really need to do a good reread. It was always such an enjoyable book with a lot of depth. I never got to see the movie :o
I now shall take it upon myself to find other films in which the actor who played Butt appeared, in the hopes that we may one day have a man called Butt in the Hall of Fame.
Severely belated update: My search appears to be at a dead end. The actor's IMDB page lists no other roles of any kind, and his name cannot be Googled, because it is shared with an extremely famous person who actually did make more than one film, none of which will ever appear in the Basement.
My sister was given this book to read when she was in middle school. Seemed interesting so i took it from her. She said they had told her it was based on a true story. Few chapters in and i knew they had bullshitted her, or she misunderstood, idk. But it was a pretty good read anyway. Never knew they made a movie
I was hoping that the theme of "Alice May" would be a reference to a unique woman of historical renown. Maybe an actress in classic films. But alas, google only gives me a 3rd string Scooby Doo villain as results.
Ohhh, an Iranian movie!! And a good one. If you liked that one I highly suggest checking out the rest of Mr. Kiarostami's filmography especially "A Taste of Cherry" and "Shirin". I think you'll find a lot more great stuff from my country :DDD.
Unfortunately I don't remember the drug warnings that were covered in D.A.R.E class in 6th grade. At that point it was mainly telling kids don't smoke. In high school 2000s they covered the ones like cocaine, PCP, marijuana, possibly meth. Don't know if they mentioned acid. The wave of top 5 go to drugs is always changing especially now with emphasis on vaping and shrooms.
I am a perennial pioneer of American film noir, ranging from early 1940s up to modern day. In 1981, Czech émigré Ivan Passer (1933-2020) directed Cutter's Way (probably his best directorial effort in a now mostly forgotten career) with John Heard and Jeff Bridges playing amateur detectives hunting down murderous scum among the filthy rich. Nothing new about that, but this is an interesting take on the subject. Have you seen it, because I would very much like to hear other people's opinions about this sadly neglected gem.
I understand that the inclusion of "White Rabbit" seems incongruous to the film. But the title "Go Ask Alice" is a lyric in the song and where it came from, so that's why it is there. We only see a few seconds of Ruth Roman despite her getting some top or near-top billing. So, I can only assume that either she had a very short role in the movie or that her scenes were not all that interesting ... or both.
I've been meaning to read Go Ask Alice for years and I listened to the audiobook every day for the past week. I was very over-prepared. Most of the important narration was cut, no wonder you guys didn't know what was going on. I recommend the book, although there are moments that really scream "a Mormon parent wrote this" and the ending paragraph felt kinda Plan 9. Jeez, I haven't thought about Close-Up since I saw it in a college class. The part I remember most was the motorcycle scene at the end. If I remember correctly, the main actor's mic isn't really cutting out, he's actually being censored because he kept cussing out the motorcyclist
We had 8 periods of 50 minutes each. Homeroom was five minutes and started at 8:00 a.m. We had five minutes between periods. School ended at 2:40 p.m. I can remember this after decades but can't remember where my keys are.
Actually CH is really just a combination T and SH. English speakers usually don't think of it that way, but linguists, and folks who speak other languages, do.
This movie could have been really great if it wasn't based on a lie and a complete propaganda film. If they had used a real person's diary and used the same sort of film techniques that stood out really well(such as, as you mentioned, the scene with the potential rape/murder couple), it could have been a genuinly good cautionary tale. However the fact that the diary is fabricated takes all the greatness it could have had and dumps on it. It makes it feel like they were just throwing things in to be like 'oh we have to cover that topic next' etc. For example the whole 'mY mOnThLy pReGnAnCeY sCaRe' line. There was birth control at that point, she gets ahold of hard drugs regularly, why wouldn't she just take birthcontrol? and why focus on that part of it other than to just be like SEX IS BAD YOU MIGHT GET PREGNANT! AND DRUGS MAKES YOU WANT TO HAVE SEX WHEN YOU WOULDNT NORMALLY!! and lets be honest...with the amount of random pills she was taking she probably couldnt have gotten pregnant anyway....I also noticed that two years pass in this film and its not really...covered? Like you said it skips time far too much, she starts out at 15 and it ends at 17 and then she up and DIES because she has a relapse or something? Idk. The whole fact that it was a fabricated story just makes the whole thing disingenuous and makes it feel like a religious lady preaching that sex and drugs are bad. Which is what it is. The whole movie could have been fixed by them using a real diary, however they likley wouldnt have gotten such outlandish stories that way so perhaps thats why they didnt do that. I dunno. I liked you guys' take on it as usual, I think I have a sort of sore spot over films like this because most of the time theyre just way over the top and unrealistic and literally just a drug PSA. Of course I'm also not saying these stories COULDNT happen, of course they could, but the likleyhood of a 15 year old getting an LSD spiked drink once and then suddenly becoming a pill head and becoming homeless is so small compared to them jsut smoking weed and thats it. Which also, I wish they wouldnt lump weed in with all this stuff, it wont make you trip out, it wont send you to the hospital unless youre allergic to it, and its not a gateway drug unless you already are interested in trying everything. Its just way too preachy. But I suppose in the end that was the point.
In your first 30 seconds, I felt certain you would break into a Sesame Street episode, or at least a "brought to you by the letter A" fake commercial. Also, Grover is Yoda. ruclips.net/video/Ktuvc-Ejv3A/видео.html
So, we just found out that Ray Liotta has passed. He had a lot of amazing performances in his career, so I'd like to talk about one that wasn't so great. Have you seen Corrina Corrina? He played a sweet, soft spoken single dad - a role he couldn't be more miscasted because of his intensity. The movie itself is pretty midiocre, except for somewhat inspired performance from Whoopie Goldberg.
Feels like this had the most "Matt suddenly breaking into hysterical laughter" moments of any episode so far lmao
Not even a full minute in and I’m laughing along! Golden gold!
Another addition to the "Tripping in the Basement" playlist!
"30 years have passed and still no flashback. What a jip that turned out to be." -Norm Macdonald

I never laughed harder than when Matt said, "We got blasted with gamma radiation and we all became Hulks."

Definitely gonna name my first child 'Butt'. They'll probably end up becoming the President of the World or something.

Finally subscribed with monthly donations. Loving this show and catching up with old episodes while keeping up with the new episodes.👍❤️
Simply not focusing exclusively on bad movies puts this show in pretty rare company.
That's a weird look for William Shatner, but I have to admit it does stop you from automatically thinking "There's Captain Kirk" whenever he's on screen.
Instead you're on the edge of your seat wondering if his moustache will fly away the next time he talks.
Props for the Misfits/Glenn Danzig reference 🤘☠️🤘

Love y’all! Keep up the wonderful work and Thanks as always
Can we have just one second of random Sloan Rage - just staring angrily at a dropped Post-It note? 😆
I love Matt's glee at his own Danzig joke :) This would make a truly hideous double bill with Noé's Climax.
I always watched my Dad watch this when I was a youngin, and I genuinely thought you all were way more popular. I’m subscribing because you deserve it.
Simple comment. I love your show.

I never got to see the movie :o
We had 9 periods in my school but only if you count Lunch.
It's funny, every time Craig questions the name But/d I have the urge to respond with "beats me." from Totoro.
Blasted with Gamma Rays.....pure Fire 🔥

"I think that was the most golden gold we ever golded."
It is scary when you are sober and the people around you are stoned. I experienced it far to many times.
"Wow, man, I am so high I keep imagining your dad is Captain Kirk! "
I remember having to watch this during health class in junior high

Went do I get the feeling reviews for "Alice Doesn't Live Here, Anymore" and "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice" are forthcoming?
They covered Bob & Carol a few seasons ago.
Great video.
I'm convinced that the most ironic TV show is my all-time favorite: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." It's just dripping with irony!
Read this in school never knew there was a movie
*crosses fingers for Friday the 13th part VI because of the Alice Cooper connection...*
"I don't like K". Perfect timing for my earphones to start working properly.
3:02 and 4:25 song references?

Maaaatt. Did you have a little puff of the devil's lettuce before this episode? :p
don't drink that water, craig! matt laced it with acid, I know it!

Nice Jonathan Richman reference.

hot take: his name is Bundt
I look forward to Matt's "alphabet report" on unboxing for the next 26 episodes
Anyone remember the name of the tv movie with Andy Griffith where he throws up blood in church?
Certified Copy seen it?
I'm gonna keep asking; Mobile Suit Gundam: The Movie. Scene it?

Fun fact: until very recently, K, W, and Y were not part of the Portuguese alphabet, only being used in loanwords.
Also, hearing a Brazilian pronounce "double u" as in "www." always brings a smile to my face. :)
8:45 HERBERT!
"bonkers on the bonker puffs" .... like ya do ....
This is like MST3000 without robots
12:49 hey, wha happened?
Matt was VERY giggly this episode!
Matt Sloan foremost authority on the Julie Adams mouth acting technique. Hear he's gonna open a school.
His name is Butt.
Was that Marissa Tomei?
The shaving cream scene….
Foot notes: Matt asks Greg low key for X.
8 periods wtf? we only had 6 back in jr and high school not unless your counting homeroom as a period

My school had 6 periods each day, I think they changed it years later
I know this comment might be late, but you guys should read 'Unmasking Alice' its all about beatrice sparks and the con she ran
Where are my LSD flashbacks? Still waiting over 20 years after the last of MANY LSD trips.🤷♂️
On the c and k thing - c is needed for ‘ch’ sounds. K or Q could be eliminated though

All the kids these days getting hepped up on goofballs.
