  • I’m constantly asked why I buy so many CDs. Then I hear comments that I can’t possibly listen to them all. That I’m a hoarder. There must be something wrong with me. Or that no one needs to own more than a couple hundred. I will tackle all of these things and more when I explain Why I Bought 12,000 CDs.

That is a fir point too. However, many colectors do listen to everything they own or at least are aware they enjoy xperimenting listening to a vast array of music. Being a completists is something I really can't comprehend. I have had artists I have loved who then have gone down a different track and I haven't liked their new music. In these cases I stopped buying the albums. It seems you have the balance just right but I think Brendon is not possessed rather loves exploring a library - and one needs a library if they are to go exploring. • @goopah
      @goopah 9 месяцев назад +3

Exactly. It's nobody's business. I've been to the homes of actual hoarders, and there is a huge difference. You literally cannot walk through a room without climbing over piles of things, and there tends to be rodents and spoiled food everywhere. But even then, I'm tempted to say leave them alone if they are happy. Unless you are a relative concerned about them, or a landlord who is going to need to do a major cleaning job some day. Most collectors, on the other hand, tend to be organized. When I have guests at my house, they usually end up acting like they are at a music museum, looking for their favorite music and asking me to play it when they find it, which I am always happy to do. 🙂 For me, collecting is a joy, not a job. And I kind of hate that there are people out there that only collect because they are speculating on future dollar values. I can't imagine parting with my favorite music. And while I know that streaming is currently capable of solving most peoples' listening needs, with RUclips it comes with ads, and with all streaming platforms, albums frequently get pulled for licensing issues, so I enjoy having a collection that I can count on always being there for me. Sorry for my little dissertation there. I got carried away because of my strong feelings in the matter.

On the one hand, I agree: it's nobody's business what he buys or collects, as long as it's ethical and legal. That's for him to decide, and everyone else can go jump in a lake. The only people he might need to justify it to are his loved ones or, if he's a spiritual man, a higher power. But when you make a RUclips channel about your huge CD collection, you're necessarily inviting all manner of comments and questions, and some of them will be negative. That's the nature of the beast. If you don't want people being negative about your hobby, keep it private.

When I got a little over 8K cd's, I began to rip them. It took me about 15 years, but I ripped everything. Most of it to FLAC and some to AAC at 256kbps. Backed everything up to 2 drives and created a PLEX server. I sold or gave away all but about 200, which are collectible or that I want to pass along to my son. I love having everything right there. I can play in my car, on my TV, on bluetooth speakers. Or plug up to my rack system and play from an old phone. My collection comes with me on vacation, and to the gym and on long rides, etc. It's the best of both worlds, and I don't have a house full of stuff that somebody will have to physically discard when I am no longer here.

Around the same age, got the bug from my older sister and her first Michael Jackson and Eurythmics albums, glam metal was my thing as a teenager, my first Vinyl was Foreigner Agent Provocateur and first CD was Apetite for Destruction. By early 2000s i had around 3,000 CDs, 700 Vinyls and 100 cassettes, already expanding my musical tastes from Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop, several forms of Rock from 60s garage/psychedelia to Metal. Around that time and due to constant job relocations i had to slow down a bit but now that i am back to a steady place, i have resurfaced my full collection, reinstalled my sound system and enjoying every bit of it. I am not investing that much anymore but thanks to streaming i am constantly looking for good music and selectively go out to buy new records. Younger generation will not understand the connection with physical media, the images, smell, the process of putting on a record and sitting for 40 minutes listening to a full album while reading the material. Now at 51 i still gather with my high school buddies, visiting record stores and gong to concerts. And this will go on as long as possible…

I have more art books than a lot of public libraries. I have enough art supplies to start a small store. I have thousands of albums myself although not nearly as many as you and I can truthfully say is all that's held me back from more is money, or rather the lack of it. Art and music have been the staples of my life my life. Enjoyment in these things and the enriching value they bring to one's life is what makes life worth living. This is true of any collection that brings personal satisfaction.

I doubt i'll surpass 1,100 albums, I'm in my late 40's and getting more pickier every year & some of my favorite bands have broken up so there's less new albums to buy.

Perhaps this is the element that we're missing today, everything is fast consumption, easy access. In the past you had to struggle to get to some stuff, and you appreciated it more because of it.

I am mostly a vinyl guy, but I also own a large collection of CDs as well. I have long given up on making people understand. All I know is, a download is not tangible; some of these remasters sound crummy and that includes stuff put on vinyl too. Some of my best sounding cds are from the early days before the compression wars started. The example I can think of is my Led Zep Houses of The Holy from the mid 80s; I think it runs all over the Led Zep studio box set from 1993 for the same album. Bro if you were a hoarder, we would not be able to see the carpet behind you. I think you have a very well curated collection. Enjoy your tunes, screw what others think. I spotted your original Pink Floyd Pulse on the shelf ;-). Love that one.

Well explained Brendan. It’s definitely not hoarding my collection is an important part of me . Its all in order and looked off by me . The art work was very important to me remember getting out of the blue by elo I couldnt stop looking at it and it suited the music . When i watch your videos i never think he sounds out of control you don’t buy 10 twenty copies of same cd . I know someone who was a hoarder with his vinyl he would go to same store and buy all the tge copies of one particular artist amd kept them all sealed and never played. I would go along on a Friday to this particular store if i left it too late all the copies of an new release i wanted they would sell to him . He passed away a few years ago and his complete collection got auctioned off 10 and 20 copies of each album sealed were all sold for next to nothing now he was a hoarder as it was mental heath issue. So it was sad . But i love getting new albums and discovering new artists. Take care joe

I've amassed about a 2,000 disc collection over the years myself (and in the last 5 years went back and started collecting vinyl again). And I went through a period where I started selling a lot of stuff off, too, in the mid-2000's when digital took over - a lot of which I've begun to re-buy in a measured fashion. And I've begun buying stuff, that I only had on digital for years and years. But I still really love the convenience of streaming. I've ripped my entire collection to FLAC and stream it through Plex whenever I want. My collection is mostly original masterings as newer masterings tend to sound really bad. But it's really the best of both worlds. When I'm home, I'll play the discs whenever possible but when I'm out and about, Plex turns my collection into my own private streaming service.

No, most are released on CD. And when the album is digital only, it’s also not available on vinyl. But that’s actually pretty rare at least in the Rock world. I’d say that for last year there may have only been 2 or 3 albums that were digital only out of the couple hundred new albums I bought. If anything more are getting released as both vinyl and CDs increase in sales. Physical media has been making a comeback.

    I relate totally to this.
I am almost 50 and have a fairly large CD collection, not as many as 12,000(I think). I started collecting in the early 1990s and I am very much a completist if I like an artist. I don't tend to stream much, partly because I have downloaded or ripped most of the albums onto a hard drive and I tend to play them from there.
I like the fact I have a physical copy for a few reasons.
    1) A this time so many albums are being rereleased but often with things like autotune being used, these versions get streamed not the originals.
    2) Artwork and lyrics it is great to have copies of both.
    3) I have many smaller artists in the collection, they are often not on streaming platforms
    4) I can often buy secondhand versions cheaper than the downloads are.
I confess at 50 I may not ever get to play everything I own again, however not one album I own has never been played and I am hopeful I will enjoy the collection in the future as much as I have done in the past.

The biggest problem for me is my backlog of around 300 albums (including boxsets) I still haven't gotten to. Some go back four years. But any new purchase, I must listen to multiple times before I officially promote it to my collection and my database (everything I have is databased). Sometimes albums are growers so I give them the chance. I'm also a completist of artists I really like. I don't know how you do it with 12,000 - that's immense. Again thanks for sharing your story.

For me, it stopped with digital around the mid 2000s but man, nothing beats opening up a record and checking out the artwork and lyrics. I think us older guys have more nostalgia for going into a record store and digging into something that grabs our attention. Mostly from the artwork and word of mouth. The metal genre is doing great stuff with physical media nowadays.

For me, the other thing that made my music collection grow which isn’t anywhere near this impressive amount of cds, is some of the bands that were formed in the 1980’s up to present day, they all state their influences in interviews etc, so then I check them out, and some of those artists have now been added to my collection, so it has been another way to explore some genres or artists that I might have ignored. For me I don’t listen to radio anymore here in the UK, so I discover some artists through festival posters or if a band I like is touring then I can check out supporting bands before the gig!
