  • I have gone out and tested the Shimano BFS Alderbaran MGL on some Aussie Bass.
I tested this reel on 2 BFS rods with jerkbaits and soft plastics. It was an impressive bit of kit, check out the video to see my opinion!

Great to see another Aussie youtuber getting into BFS. Yea I agree, it looks over filled.

Thanks mate, I have had the BFS stuff on the channel a long time (8 or 9 years I'd say) but have just started using more variety and some better spec reels for the job. The love has definitely rekindled though.
I definitely thought I'd have to sort that line, 3 trips later still going strong... good reel or good operator (I would suggest the first)

Nice seeing you back mate! It’s interesting how Shimano decided to include this reel within the handful of newer reels they recently started to bring, not saying it isn’t a good reel but it’s a relatively old platform. I can’t remember exact year of release but it shares frame with the 2016 Aldebaran BFS, which btw it was for a long time my favourite BFS reel, and I still hold onto mine and sits really high on my list. Anyway, welcome back and looking forward to more content!! Cheers

Cheers mate, I've always wanted an alderbaren (non bfs versions) so I kind of had to buy this, despite being an older platform I love it! Honestly stoked with it, now I have had a few sessions with it aswell! All it needs is a drag clicker and some after market knobs and she will be one of the best. 😂

@@TheHuntForBronze oh so it doesn’t come with drag clicker? You should’ve grabbed a 16 Alde BFS, it comes with clicker and better components than the 30 Mgl and honestly, it is one of the most versatile BFS reels I’ve tried, can cast up to 15gr comfortably if you wanted to cover that range…but obviously that one isn’t available off the shelves

Aldebaran MGL 30 isn’t a BFS reel. I had the same model Aldebaran 50 (non MGL) and it underperformed for me, really light weight but not at all BFS. In fact my old Chronarch ci4+ outperformed it.
The Aldebaran BFS is what you want.

Funny you say that. I found it cast light weight incredibly well. It just had a broader casting range than a specific bfs reel I guess. It is actually comfier at lighter weight than the conquest BFS so far.
If you want to split hairs on it. Maybe a power BFS but it was very comfy with a 1/12oz plastic. I was incredibly impressed

Can you share you specs on the rod you use with your conquest bfs? I just bought a Calcutta conquest bfs. Was thinking of getting the daiwa infeet ex fast taper rod.

Hey mate, it's a 4-6lb, 7ft fast taper ACM Custom Rod. It's a popping blank so very parabolic in bend, but makes for an unreal bass rod for blades, jerks and cranks baits. I have been using it for about 9 years and absolutely love it. Even more so now matched to the conquest

@@TheHuntForBronze thanks. Will look them up. Have never got a custom rod before.
