My wife went to a talk and question session with Colin Blunstone last night. He told the story of this performance. He said that he was so nervous that he drank a whole bottle of scotch before going in to the studio. The stool was to stop him falling over and moments after the performance he was violently sick! To me the fact that he was able to sing at all after drinking that much whisky let alone sing so beautifully is testimony to his natural talent. To this day his voice has not changed.
Thank-you RUclips, this is the first time I've ever seen this song being performed by the wonderful Mr Blunstone. I can remember listening to it some 50 years ago on the Johnny Walker lunch-time show on R1 Fab FM, and always wondered who the singer was. Now I know, as I was never interested in the minutiae of the pop world by reading the MM and the like. I noticed what big flaring nostrils he has like Kenneth Williams, which I suspect must give him the dreamy, breathy quality to his voice. What an absolute joy it is to hear and see this marvellous song again, after all these years Also isn't the String Quartet backing totally amazing, probably second only to Eleanor Rigby by the Fab Four, for the unique backing to a pop song.
Colin's best and Denny's best, but the most beautiful thing to me is the age range of the musicians, giving Their very best to make this wonderful piece. Thanks to all of them, young and old.
The voice: the ability with octaves, and the beautiful cadence. The emotion. So Moving. A one of a kind gift that he has shared with us all for decades. I appreciate this so much.
Congratulation Jules! I appreciate the use of the phrase “one of the greatest” rather than the arrogant “the greatest”. There were and are many very good voices and Colin rates amongst them.
Just lovely, not an easy song to sing, Colin's voice perfectly suited to the song. The strings were magnificent too. Can't believe it's over forty years ago, where has all the time disappeared to.
What's amazing is that it is so pure. An E5. McCartney actually manages an A5 on the mid section of Twist and Shout, the "aw aW AW Woah WAAAAA!!" bit, but that's more of a scream. Fantastic singers both.
What a gorgeous performance of a gorgeous song. And what a beautiful arrangement. This really wasn't what I was listening to in 72(?ish) but quality always speaks and I'm glad it's one of those records that always stayed with me.

this song will survive with all the classical songs and composers because it seems to be as perfect as anyone can get singing a individual song live. [IMHO]
Would that they only could make songs like this today, simple clean lyrics, brilliant dynamic vocal and fantastic strings and no autotune !! Timeless classic.
Wow what a find. Just browsing Gilbert Osullivan 'alone again naturally' Great song. Then this appears in my search. His voice is so mystic, remarkable. Thank goodness for algorithms. Thanks whoever you are for this.
I was at a CB concert at the Stables in Milton Keynes a few decades ago. In the audience was Rod Argent who lived locally. He went on stage and they had a reunion after years of estrangement. Subsequently the zombies reunited and thry had another bite of the cherry of success. So glad i was there to see it!
Absolutely and utterly exquisite. A joyous experience and the string quintet know that they absolutely nailed this. Just watch their reactions at the end. Great arrangement and an even better performance. Sublime vocals.
A Voice for the Ages, One of a precious few true artists who can truly tuch your heart and make you weep and in the very next moment touch a chord in your heart to make you smile, never stop bringing a little bit of heaven to a saddened world
His voice is so heartfelt singing this song it's makes me cry. Plus I was only 10 when it came out and I'm 59 now so.. Very nostalgic for me xxx he's still touring!!! 🥂
I saw him live in 1972 or 73. I think he had Argent backing him. When he did this one, they replaced the strings with a cleverly controlled wall of feedback and fuzz. But of course his voice soared above it. I've honestly never seen a performer looking so genuinely happy before or since.
I love youtube! when they put on clips as good as this! Colin Blunstone a track from his first solo album after the breakup of the Zombies. One of the finest singers England has ever produced. All his recorded efforts are wonderful and worth tracking down.
Colin captures so many emotions with his subliminal voice pain sadness and sexual longing even despair are all there. Every time I hear this song I'm overwhelmed with admiration for the guy and for a guy like myself who can't sing jealousy.
Rediscovered this song from my youth, he still has the 'breathy' quality to his voice he had back in 65 in she's not there. Great singer Colin Blunstone.
Have loved this song forever, it lifts my spirits every time. Voice and arrangement are both utter perfection. Colin is so professional in his approach to singing and performance. Hadn't seen him performing it until I found this, think I have maybe an insey little crush developing now ...

Wonderful performance by Colin, sweetly piquant arrangement with those strings; particularly the bowed cello and double bass. Finally, not forgetting the delightful song-writing of Denny Laine; whose own version of this song is equally as striking in its vocal range.
Listen to this lovely song, close my eyes.....I can almost believe that it's 1971 again and I'm still doing my A levels! It has worn well over the years...wish I could say the same!
This is so beautiful! I loved his voice from the very beginning, when I started to get into popmusic. So many great songs: "I don't believe in miracles", "Andorra", "Wonderful", "I want some more", "Time of the season" and more...
I've owned a copy of One Year - first in vinyl, then CD, now download - for most of my life. Colin Blunstone is one of the truly great British vocalists. Beautiful rendition of a beautiful song written by Denny Laine. Loved this since the first hearing over 40 years ago and never get bored with listening to it. Also, I think it's fantastic that Colin can still hit that high note at the end. Best preserved pipes in pop or what?

Wow, great story. I wouldn’t mind but he looked so composed. Great performance though!
Gracias por la anécdota, le da valor al video
Came here to say he looked like he was battling some severe indigestion!
A whole bottle of scotch and he could still sing so beautifully? I wouldn't have been able to find the stool or stand!
A full 1/2 bottle Id guess. Anyway a phenominal performance of a fabulous song. A lifelong fan.X
WOW! I so wish there were other songs of Colin singing live in this era. I could listen to this all day!
Try Caroline Goodbye and Ain't It Funny.
Colin gave this such a beautiful treatment. RIP Denny Laine- you wrote an amazing song❤

Loved it when it came out, loving it now
I just love Colin Blunstone's smokey English voice !!!
No auto tune for that geezer.. beautiful song and voice.. my mum used to love this song didn’t really get it as a child I certainly do now
His voice is perfectly suited to this song and not an easy song to sing. Brilliant.
The voice: the ability with octaves, and the beautiful cadence. The emotion. So Moving. A one of a kind gift that he has shared with us all for decades. I appreciate this so much.
One of the greatest ever voices in pop music. Brilliant.

Does the poster of this possess the entire show broadcast on 14th December 1971 also featuring Uriah Heep?
Congratulation Jules! I appreciate the use of the phrase “one of the greatest” rather than the arrogant “the greatest”. There were and are many very good voices and Colin rates amongst them.
Totally from the soul as when he sang The Eagle Will Rise again in the Alan Parson Project.
Just lovely, not an easy song to sing, Colin's voice perfectly suited to the song. The strings were magnificent too. Can't believe it's over forty years ago, where has all the time disappeared to.
Agreed...!
Now it's 51 years ❤
Nothing comes clase though these days does it
I love this soooo much ❤
❤
that high note at the end gets me every time over the last 50 odd years, timeless, gifted, effortless vocals.
Its awesome. I try not to listen too often. I dont want to get bored of it. Im starting to think its not possible anyway
Yes
Ethereal and so pure!
What's amazing is that it is so pure.
An E5.
McCartney actually manages an A5 on the mid section of Twist and Shout, the "aw aW AW Woah WAAAAA!!" bit, but that's more of a scream.
Fantastic singers both.
He did some gorgeous work with The Alan Parsons Project
So beautiful. The song too 😊
Wow..I'm 62..makes me cry😢 so wonderful
It’s not about the voice. It’s about the vibe. Totally organic and original. Wonderful.
What a gorgeous performance of a gorgeous song. And what a beautiful arrangement. This really wasn't what I was listening to in 72(?ish) but quality always speaks and I'm glad it's one of those records that always stayed with me.

Thank you Denny Laine for a wonderful song!
The exquisite sweetness of Colin Bluestone’s voice is a rare gift and a real pleasure to listen too..
Violinist with a Dicky Bow!
And no backing dancers...
In the days when real music ruled.
And he is still performing in 2020.
It is rare to find a performer of this class, everything he does is a classic.I love this today as much as as the first time I heard it.
Cracking song...and a cracking vocal performance
this song will survive with all the classical songs and composers because it seems to be as perfect as anyone can get singing a individual song live. [IMHO]

Just astronomical. Had to listen over and over, Like a little reset.
Wonderful performance by Colin, sweetly piquant arrangement with those strings; particularly the bowed cello and double bass. Finally, not forgetting the delightful song-writing of Denny Laine; whose own version of this song is equally as striking in its vocal range.

Very classy...................and he's still performing live with that superb voice
As part of the reformed Zombies
With all the rubbish that they play on UK radio these days, it is so nice to come onto RUclips and find quality music such as this.
I've owned a copy of One Year - first in vinyl, then CD, now download - for most of my life. Colin Blunstone is one of the truly great British vocalists. Like Rod Stewart, Paul Rodgers, Robert Plant, Ozzy Osbourne, Elton John, John Lydon even, as soon as you hear that unique voice you know it's Colin.
Very true, unfortunately he doesn't have the profile of the others you mentioned; I'm not sure why.
I've loved this song since a was a child and it was on the radio. Thank you for sharing it.
Omg, just discovered this! Awesome and so beautiful!
I'll tell you what I love about this, you can see his mouth creating the sounds with such emotion...its incredible!
Beautiful rendition of a beautiful song written by Denny Laine. Loved this since the first hearing over 40 years ago and never get bored with listening to it. Also, I think it's fantastic that Colin can still hit that high note at the end. Best preserved pipes in pop or what?
He started doing voice exercises about 20 years ago.

I bought his One Year album when it came out and still play it. Love the voice.
Incredible. I can still being totally knocked out by this in 18-whatever, when it wa originally released.
