    Although the video will show you how you can install a folding generator rack from Harbor Freight or from possibly other retailers it really needs to point out more than anything else that the rear bumper on the RVs are very sketchy and some of them are worse than others like in our case. However we did get the rack modified and the bumper reinforced and a hitch Mount mounted but if I had to do it over again I probably would have just had a hitch welded directly to the frame of the RV and have it lower then the bumper. But again are RV sits awful low as it is and I would hate to have something hanging down even further than the bumper that I have already drug more than once going in and out of locations. So hopefully this will help you to avoid some of the mistakes I made and maybe change your mind about doing it in the same manner that I did. Again it works and there's no issue with that it's just a little bit more work and Fabrication that was required. Thanks for watching.

    Been there done that. After a period of time the two U bolts that secured the receiver to my travel trailer bumper bent my bumper inward. I now have mounted four of the Mount and Lock square bumper cargo support arms. it moved my generator box closer to the trailer and works ever so much better.

    funny, I am in the middle of adding a receiver to the rear bumper of our 5th wheel. already posted 3 videos. the funny thing is that I did not see this video until after I finished that part on mine. I used the same bumper support kit. my bumper is a solid 4" tube. to small for a sewer hose. I currently just had hand surgery and had to stop the project for a bit. I have 2 more videos to go in order to complete the project. finish up on the electrical / mounting the cargo box and modifications to the project to help it be more secure. good luck and safe travels.

    Love the in-depth explanations you provide in your videos. I just bought a 3100 Dual Fuel just to have if needed. I'm curious about the exhaust. If it is not practical to put the Generator 4 feet away is it possible to "extend" the exhaust somehow?

    Very nice set up! Especially that you aren't hauling it back there it all you need. I have a different set up but I also pull a 3000 pound boat trailer behind the camper. Changes the dynamics a little. Have to balance out hitch weight in the front to keep weight distribution correct on travel trailer.

      Merle Wickstrand yeah that first hitch that we had if it would have fit I would have felt much more comfortable with it because of its design. Even though the bumper couldn't handle it it actually was rated for a 350 lb tongue weight and 3000 lb trailer pull weight. Again some kind of a feature that we didn't really need. But hopefully this will last we're going to put it to a slight test here shortly I think so stay tuned LOL

    I have a hitch that looks like that one you put on, to hold a bike rack. But since it fits so tightly to the camper I ended up taking it back off because I couldn't stand the rubbing noise it made while traveling. Made a big dent in the trailer too.
    I have a friend who put a carrier on the back of her trailer for her generator but instead of just one hitch an receiver she put two hitches on spaced out and moved the one receiver and put on a second receiver to balance everything out. Then she made a insulated box that would fit over the top and also put a cable around/through everything.

    Had to smile about your view of online purchases. I hate waiting. Thats why for anything questionable I want a local supplier. Its worth it to me to even pay more, especially for warranty issues, so my job gets finished in a timely manner. Namely the same day I start it.

      I live in a relatively rural area. Between Amazon Logistics and the multiple warehouses that are in the area I have deliveries come sometimes the same day and sometimes even on Sundays. As far as returns as long as it's a prime purchase it is hassle free. UPS comes to the door and picks it up and takes it back for me and I get a refund pretty much as soon as UPS scams that they have picked it up from my home. I try to shop locally whenever I need some small parts that might be a project art that requires need a half my hands on it and decide if it will work or not. Other than that for items that I know absolutely sure that I want, and being an impatient person myself, online shopping hasn't failed me very often.

    Thank you for sharing. Great job in making it work. I'm curious if it's held up after some time? I used a similar carrier as yours but it can't fold up because the spare tire is still on the bumper, but it worked great. I carried my 100 lb generator and a few other lighter items. @@Rvdaydream I have pulled a 2500 lbs enclosed trailer off the hitch. And the way I supported it most of the weight will be on the hitch extension. I've pulled trailers over 10K miles off the hitch so it's pretty well tested.
      Thanks for the advice about contacting the MFG . Unless I could talk to a engineer most people I contact don't have the 40+ years as a truck mechanic and welder that I have. It
    is a bit of a pain to have to drag the genset & propane bottle
    out of the back of the truck & then lift it up onto the fold down
    rack, especially after you have just driven 500 miles & it is hot
    enough to need the aircon. I have similar setup (on a smaller scale),
    when I need to use the genset for the aircon or microwave I just drag
    it out onto the pickup tailgate & run it from there. The only
    issue is that your gear in the truck is not secured but there is no
    lifting & it is further away from your bedroom.

The other thing is we don't plan on keeping this RV so the time spent installing that type of amount really want it pay off. The other thing is the window in the front of the RV which gets looked out constantly during all my time sitting at the table either eating or editing videos would be blocked considerably by a big generator. But in the future, on a different RV, I may want to do something like that. Mainly for the reason that that area will allow the generator the smoothest ride during travel. We'll have to see what the future brings though. Thanks for the comment👍😁

    • @Rvdaydream
      @Rvdaydream  6 лет назад +1

      Axle flip makes it less stable when towing because center of gravity is higher, Plus gas mileage would be affected as now the trailer would be slightly higher up in the wind.... Crazy to do this.. Why are you lugging it from the truck to the rear and then lift it into the holder. Why put it so close to the bedroom and why NOT use the ground . Why lift it and get vibration to boot. Keep it up front , on the ground or leave in the bed if for short stops.

      @Rvdaydream  6 лет назад

      Joseph Randazzo we have alot of options thanks!

    • @Rvdaydream
      @Rvdaydream  6 лет назад

      Joseph Randazzo well we're looking at not leaving it on the ground for security reasons. As I mentioned in the video people have the tendency to think that something just sitting on the ground is easier to steal even if it is chained up. Quite honestly I would find it easier to steal if all I had to do was cut a chain and roll off with it. Now if it was sitting on a Cargo Carrier at that point I don't know if it's secured to the Cargo Carrier in addition to having a chain on it. Also if I leave it in the back of the truck that means the cap and tailgate are wide open which of course is another security issue. Also my power cords in the rear and will not reach to the front of the RV without the extension cable that I have. Which is one less thing that I want to deal with especially since the added length would cause additional strain when running the air conditioning unit. The vibration can be dealt with with some sort of a anti-fatigue mat put down prior to the generator being secured to the cargo tray. These are just personal options, we just don't want any surprises and feel as if we're inviting trouble for having a generator sitting out behind our RV with a single chain on it at a truck-stop as we sleep. Plus there's going to be a propane tank sitting alongside of it also that needs to be secured. I'd rather just do all of that on a cargo tray. Ideally I would like to have a generator box they would allow us to permanently mount the generator and secure it and protect it from elements and thieves.

    • @TheJcrandazzo
      @TheJcrandazzo 6 лет назад

      You surely have thought this out and did a very nice video. I think however your concerns are a little bit exaggerated. I have considered the same set up and a even a welded platform. After considering all options the best was to leave it in the truck while stopping over and then putting it on the ground and chaining it whilst camping.Mainly because its quieter in that location and no lifting. Just plug and play. I diverted my exhaust to an vertical sky position not horizontal so I close the tailgate lock it and leave it running. The cord is long enough to make it on mine. On your set up it still can be stolen off the platform , but my main concern would be that it is too close to the bedroom wall.. The noise and vibration would be too much .You have a nice arrangement however and wish you the best of luck , but I might consider a longer extension cord heavy duty and just leave it locked in the bed.. I also only park in good areas and try to stay away from borderline environments if possible. You did a nice job , just have concerns over the logistics , but you course would know best .. Options like you said ...Good luck..

    • @Rvdaydream
      @Rvdaydream  6 лет назад

      Thanks a lot appreciate the reply, I can't change the exhaust of the Champion inverter generator. And the heat that comes off of the engine Cooling is Extreme. Do you have an inverter generator or just an open frame contractor style generator? There is a huge difference with sound and vibration as you probably know. I could make some sort of an extension for the exhaust I'm sure by modifying the case but the venting of the engine cooling fan blows heat out hot enough and down words that wherever I sent it on my lawn will burn a six by six patch of grass to the point where it will die within a day. I believe it's actually more hot than the exhaust is. I would prefer to do it the way that you are however I cannot secure all the items in the back of my truck having a cap on it with the tailgate down. I think I might readdress this entire issue again on a future video as this RV maybe with us a little bit longer then we expected. And of course at that point I've got to do something a little bit more permanent for travel. Most likely that would put the generator on the tongue of the RV and a box of some kind. We'll have to see, stay tuned and find out how we finally get this thing set up so the lifting part is addressed. Although I have no problem moving it around now at some point in my life I won't be able to throw around a hundred fifty pounds like I used to. LOL.

    • @TheJcrandazzo
      @TheJcrandazzo 6 лет назад

      Yes I have a Champion 3100 inverter generator. I welded a short piece of 1 inch pipe and then a 90 elbow looking up. I have a Chev Avalanche and it is easy to remove the last top panel and close the tailgate.No one sees it and can hardly hear it. The cord however does come out the top and over the tailgate. Hardly noticeable.It gets enough cooling air for the fan as well.

    Did this to my 28” ultra lite, on my way to the campsite the whole 3 bicycle and bumper was dragging 😡😲.
    Eventually if you install one of this rear mounted gadgets it will fall of , so do attempt 🤬.

      Did you install the Mount N Lock Safety Struts and hitch and still have the bumper dragging or did you just add the hitch? I am curious as to how strong the Safety Struts are in adding capacity to the bumper.

      No we were just showing that if I was unable to lift the generator up on the rack that she would be able to. Which of course it's a little bit too heavy for her. Doesn't really make a difference at this point as we mounted the generator on the tongue now

    People who are OCD shouldn't be drinking so much caffeine!!! LOL I saw that big "JUG-O-POP" sitting on the bumper!! LOL Thought maybe the audio was going to start sounding like chipmunks in overdrive, maybe you can edit that in next time/project!

    All that time and expense just to keep your generator off of the ground?

    • @Rvdaydream
      @Rvdaydream  4 года назад +1

      Yes and transport it without taking up additional space, and secure it so it doesn't get stolen, and put it in a vented generator box so it can be run in the rain without getting itself ruined or someone electrocuted.. This isn't set up for weekend camping for 2 weeks out of the year this is for full time living in an RV and traveling the country

    • @MYCHANNELWITHMYSTUFF
      @MYCHANNELWITHMYSTUFF 4 года назад

      @@Rvdaydream you said, in this video, that you don't transport the generator mounted to the rv rack. So strike one on your explanation. As far as keeping it out of the rain. At no point in this video do you mention that your intention is to cover the generator for that purpose. I keep mine chained under the rv and it stays quite dry and none ever got electrocuted thank you. If it's going to be stolen it's going to stolen. If someone wants or bad enough you're not going to prevent it. As far as full time, I'm not full time but my RV stays in the forest all summer, may 15 th to October 1st moving as required only by forest service regulation. So my original statement stands. All that time and expense just to keep the generator off the ground.

    Why not keep the generator in the bed of your truck?

    • @Rvdaydream
      @Rvdaydream  7 лет назад

      Tony Marshall that's what it we're doing our problem was when we went on our 14 day trip to Florida that we just got back from I really didn't have a place to put the generator if we wanted to Boondock at a truck stop. As I mentioned in previous videos I could have got it out of the back of the truck and just set it on the ground and chained it up but, I think that might be a more open invitation for somebody to try to take it. Versus it being mounted on the back of the RV during the time in which we are stopped and using it. But once we're done using it of course I would shut it off in store it back in the rear of the truck again.

      I have the same genny as you. All I do is chain it up in my truck bed and connect the power cord to it and turn it on. This works at a truck stop or walmart. In the morning I disconnect my power cord and drive away. I appreciate what you have done and I also thought of doing something similar but I decided it's way easier to keep and run from the bed of my truck. Thanks for the video.

    Why not setup a tripod with a hoist and platform and lift the gen off the ground and run it in the air. Then no vibration into the trailer. Just a psychological anti theft operation..The noise and vibration are telegraphing into the RV, and after a while I would hate that, And just leave it in the truck bed and run it there is better than doing all this gen hauling around.

    Why not just weld a piece of 2x2 tubing to the top of the bumper? Problem solved.

    I always call a camper with an engine that your drive, an RV. I call the ones you tow, a trailer.
    The get universal mount that bolts to the frame! Much much much stronger. Camper bumpers are not made to hold anything.
