A HUGE RV bumper upgrade.....and a fantastic hitch basket.

  • Backstory: A customer was using his old, store-bought hitch basket on a short trip. He had it loaded with firewood, was heading to the campground when, along the way it gave out. It snapped the thin 2x2 tubing that inserts into the hitch right in half. He came to me, explained what he wanted and we got right to work. He wanted a hitch basket that would hold his 2 costco coolers and enough wood for a couple fires. Since we were doing the heavy duty hitch basket it was only natural to do a new heavy duty hitch to match. The new system has been in service all summer and has been performing well. He has loaded it heavy, put his bike rack on the back and towed his boat (without the rack in place) all without any problem.

    Oh heck yea, to have a handywoman you can call on to help is great. Especially one that is as strong as you are. Loved the way she exited by flinging her gloves to the floor.

    Wow, seaching for something like this for my cousins class C mh. She got stuck in the desert and had to down load her carrier to enable a winch out. She wants a 72" w unit that is elevated above the stock bumper so it doesn't ground out when stuck.of course no one makes a wide unit that has a riser hitch. You may have found a new niche. Love your fab skills.

    Well designed bumper and hitch basket. I was about to suggest the wheels, but you got it covered! A lot of loops on the basket to tie down any load. It would hold easily half of a ton. Enough weight to have this VR not easy to drive in a straight line. I had to replay Jessica's move at least three times! Very well executed, both gloves clapped the ground at the same time! Lol! Thanks Vincent! Joe Lesage (new channel name).

    Any idea how much this weighs?
    It’s the same idea I have for mine, but worried about shifting to much tongue weight back, before I load anything back there?

      My wife's name is Jessica too, what a coincidence! That was actually my hired shop helper, my wife was at work....😜. The hitch can hold a lot of weight.

      usually I use .120 BC the sewer hose still fits. I think on this one we may have gone to a heavier wall BC he crates his sewer hose

    • @marcinmisztak257

      Thank You for replying. I think i will go with 3/16 5X5, so I will be done with it for good and don't have to worry about it.

    • @HealthSupercharger
      @HealthSupercharger Год назад

      @@marcinmisztak257 If you do this then you will have to get heavy duty leaf springs in the back like weldtech does with 9 to 11 big leafs. Also if you put a heavy bike or lots of weight in the back do remember that this puts 1.5 to 1.7 x more load on the rear axel and also the front wheels get unloaded which lowers your steering and stability. Put something heavy in front of the rear axel.

    What a well built setup you fabricated. Your customer should be well pleased. I have one question though did your angle braces stiffen the ride at all. I think there might have to be some natural flexing of the RV body. Just asking because I have a 5th wheel and thinking about doing the exact thing to mine. Anyway I think you did a awesome job, God Bless!

    • @unitedstatesofbuild4915
      @unitedstatesofbuild4915  4 года назад

      The customer said it has been working really well. I dont know if he is the type of guy to notice flex in the body. Im also am not sure what weight he has loads it to either. He does have load helper bags on the rear axle. Thanks!

    wayyyyy to thick of steel....a seasoned fabber knows how to utilize lite gauge steel in all the the right places....try bolting segments together also....makes for better flexation
