"I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One" is good to start with I guess. Autumn sweater, moby octopad, stockholm syndrome, green arrow.. so many great songs on that album.
So I'm in Hollywood, roaming throughout Amoeba picking up Tim Hecker's new album when I stroll across this beautiful album artwork. A giant, vividly-colored tree catches my attention and I pick up the album. "Fade Yo La Tengo" First track? 'ohm' sounds promising. I get home and see if Anthony reviewed it and he has! Definitely gonna grab this album, thanks Anthony [:
Yo La Tengo is honestly one of the most solid bands out there, every single album is and 8-9. If you like indie I would REALLY recommend you listen to all of there albums. Each one has something you would like :)
I don't think there's such a thing as a bad YLT album. Some I like better than others, but honestly, they are kinda a victim of their own success, to consistently put out so many things so close to perfect, anything even slightly less seems bad only by comparison.
Another solid Yo release. Very relaxed, poppy record, with some really memorable melodies, I think. Great to hear Ira playing some of his usual bi-polar guitar over this dreamy backdrop. I love this lush production as well. I'd give it an 8. Looking forward to seeing them next month. Great review, Anthony.
Wheezy Waiter actually got me into these guys as he had played "You can have it all" during one of his videos, and i loved it. Yo La Tengo is an amazing band, fo shizzle.
@Rayas - Sorry if you read that as overly negative; I meant that last sentence jokingly. I think music today is in a great spot. Lots of great artists with a ton of different influences coming together. 2009 and 2010 were probably a couple of my favorites in recent memory, but 2011 and 2012 were good too.
im sorry @Fantano @theneedledrop but i have to disagree; Fade is such a beautiful record, it somehow gives this wisdom feeling throughout the LP, so different to other more romantic based themes YLT use to reach in earlier records. It is a consistent LP showin' how this guys really are masters of their own craft (just like their incredible 2018 release), an this can be experienced in their recorded KEXP live, displaying such a fidelity with the album sound using just the basics, and Ira givin classes of guitar posmodernistic noisy soloin at Ohm's (such a great performance). Just to add, i really dig this overall acoustic vibe of the LP, wich is pretty innovative if we just discard fakebook or StuffLTT. It deserves an 8 minimum! Cheers
You know Spanish is a European language, right? It's a medieval romance language "white people" have been speaking for centuries. It spread across the world through the colonization of other peoples. Why put a limitation on a language that others are speaking only because of bloodshed, and the abuse of indigenous people? You think all those people native to Mexico just took so Spanish because it was convenient? The same goes for the spread of English. IMPERIALISM RULES, right?
Fair review, as always. I felt about the same about Fade. It's got some drawbacks--it does meander a bit--but it's highly listenable and quite beautiful and super catchy at times. It's probably my favorite release so far of 2013 but it's still early in the year so if it doesn't get usurped soon, the year will probably be sucking pretty hard musically.
that's awesome!! thank you so much for responding. it's a fantastic station. keep checking it out now and again if you can. some of the DJs are unbelievable.
Hey Anthony are you thinking of reviewing the new This Town Needs Guns album that drops later this month? They've put out a couple of singles that are really nice, I think you should give it a listen!
Anthony is a great reviewer and all and I know it is nice to have one's taste affirmed by others, but those who want Anthony to review their faves should maybe upload their own reviews...Go on give it a try...What's the worst that could happen? (apart from harsh judgement and misplaced hatred directed at your earnestness).
Can you please review the Extended version of Julia Holter's Ekstatis album? It came out kind of middle December of 2012, so I know it is over a month old, but I love hearing your perspectives on those kind of electronic albums, and think your insight could be enlightening.
This review seems about right. Not their best album, not their worst. I'd say I prefer Popular Songs to Fade, but I'm more partially to the jammier elements of Yo La Tengo.
I don't know your stance on female rappers but can you review Angel Haze's EP i've been hearing it's nice, and i think i asked once already and got no reply so sorry for that. and I love your reviews
Pretty much agree with your overall review on this one. I would just like to say that of course music is completely subjective, and considering this I think you do a fine job of reviewing a large range of music. Thank you. Maybe review some Cancer Bats sometime?
im suprised you didnt review storm corrosion, not even y u no review. i know you probably didnt like it, obviously, but still it was very long awaited and pretty important to a lot of music fans, i think anyway, plus it was just something a little different you know? idk i guess i was just looking forward to see what you were ganna say about that one, no big deal of course. anyway, based off the new wilson track luminol, i highly doubt youll like the new album, but we shall see i guess...
7.5 out of 10 for this one. Ira Kaplan's nerdy week vocals do piss me off sometimes on a couple of tracks but songs like Cornelia and Jane on this album make me forgive because I think that song alone could well be their best and most beautiful yet.
I know its an old album but I could not find a video of you reviewing Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come. Would be interesting to hear your opinion on one of my favorite albums (and I am no fan of hardcore punk).
Why would they? Just because they're born and raised within the borders of a nation, doesn't mean they got to follow the ideal of that nation; no one asked to be born in their respective nation. Basically you could say the same thing about lyrics: should musicians with an english/american background (and other nationalities with english as first language) just be the musicians who can sing in english?
It's a nice album, I enjoy a lot when it gets noisy and glossy in tracks like Ohm and Before We Run, and some of the "classic" pop/rock track are great too, even if some other tracks are less imginative and kind of forgettable.
I really love the album and Stupid Things actually my favorite track off the album but to each their own. If it didn't resonate for you that's cool. One of my favs of Yo La Tengo. As for album to review - Christopher Owens "Lysandre"
What? What does that have to do with us making are own review? I'm curious what other people say about my favorite albums - one of which is Menomena's "Moms" - check it out. Namely Capsule, Plumage Heavy as Heavy Does and Pique. Making my own review is not the same thing remotely. In fact it's probably the total opposite.
"I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One" is good to start with I guess. Autumn sweater, moby octopad, stockholm syndrome, green arrow.. so many great songs on that album.
"and then nothing..." masterpiece.
Let's Save Tony Orlando's House
Tommy Ray Classic...
Let's Save Anthony Fantano's House
Tu La Tienes Fantano
Yo La Tengo puts out consistently good albums. Such a great band.
LOVE IT
we'll see. never ever been a wilson fan, but i'm waiting for the album to come along that changes my mind....
that "pavement" part with a dinosaur jr. album popping up was absolute HILARIOUS
check out anything they dropped in the late 90s, early 2000s.

i think the other tracks are softer, not as bold because they wander a bit, but i think the overall experience is unforgettably pretty.
Yo La Tengo is honestly one of the most solid bands out there, every single album is and 8-9. If you like indie I would REALLY recommend you listen to all of there albums. Each one has something you would like :)
Summer Sun is such a beautiful and underrated album. Always wanted to know what your thoughts on it were.
I agree. It's a great album.
I don't think there's such a thing as a bad YLT album. Some I like better than others, but honestly, they are kinda a victim of their own success, to consistently put out so many things so close to perfect, anything even slightly less seems bad only by comparison.
Summer Sun is a great album to listen to in spring and summer. A massively underrated album.
I fully agree, one of their best! Keep spreading the good word, dude!
considering this one.
it's "Summer Sun", no "Summer Fun" Anthony!
Great review, Anthony.
yes, and i'll look forward to their next LP. :-)
it's a bit of a compilation, aint it? i heard it, dug it, and think it'll get a mention this week. :-0
Today Is The Day, One Way To Fall and Season Of The Shark have to my favorites from Yo La Tengo. From this album, I'll Be Around is the star for me.
You didn't like Stupid Things? The best song on the album?
Wheezy Waiter actually got me into these guys as he had played "You can have it all" during one of his videos, and i loved it.
Yo La Tengo is an amazing band, fo shizzle.
Cornelia and Jane is one of the most beautiful songs of the past decade. You can't play it loud enough. I love this album!
@Rayas - Sorry if you read that as overly negative; I meant that last sentence jokingly. I think music today is in a great spot. Lots of great artists with a ton of different influences coming together. 2009 and 2010 were probably a couple of my favorites in recent memory, but 2011 and 2012 were good too.
thinking about it.
Can't wait for you to review Foxygen. San Francisco is already one of my favourite songs of the year.
I loved And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out so I'll definitely pick this up.
im sorry @Fantano @theneedledrop but i have to disagree; Fade is such a beautiful record, it somehow gives this wisdom feeling throughout the LP, so different to other more romantic based themes YLT use to reach in earlier records. DAMN.
This album feels like a warm hug and I predict it'll only get better with repeated listens.

i catch it online occasionally. :-)
Maybe my 3rd fave YLT, behind ICHTHBAO and Electro-Pur-a. Loved Georgia's VOX on this LP. SO mellow!
totes.
WHY WHY WHY.
what about 'em? i reviewed the album they recently put out last year, bro. :-P
Fair review, as always. I felt about the same about Fade. It's got some drawbacks--it does meander a bit--but it's highly listenable and quite beautiful and super catchy at times. It's probably my favorite release so far of 2013 but it's still early in the year so if it doesn't get usurped soon, the year will probably be sucking pretty hard musically.
new order has a new LP out?
it'll get a mention this week.
i miiiiight have.
that's awesome!! thank you so much for responding. it's a fantastic station. keep checking it out now and again if you can. some of the DJs are unbelievable.

Hey Anthony are you thinking of reviewing the new This Town Needs Guns album that drops later this month? They've put out a couple of singles that are really nice, I think you should give it a listen!
soon, soon.
it'll get a mention. :-)
Really enjoying this latest release from these guys. Definitely consistent and like the added layers they've brought to some of the tracks. 8/10.
Anthony is a great reviewer and all and I know it is nice to have one's taste affirmed by others, but those who want Anthony to review their faves should maybe upload their own reviews...Go on give it a try...What's the worst that could happen? sure, why not?

Will you be reviewing Steven Wilson's new album next month or is that out of the question?
Pretty much agree with your overall review on this one. I would just like to say that of course music is completely subjective, and considering this I think you do a fine job of reviewing a large range of music. Thank you. Maybe review some Cancer Bats sometime?
Thanks for this review!!
I hope a Foxygen review is coming soon.
im suprised you didnt review storm corrosion, not even y u no review. i know you probably didnt like it, obviously, but still it was very long awaited and pretty important to a lot of music fans, i think anyway, plus it was just something a little different you know? idk i guess i was just looking forward to see what you were ganna say about that one, no big deal of course. anyway, based off the new wilson track luminol, i highly doubt youll like the new album, but we shall see i guess...
The band Cream was also not an actual dairy food.
7.5 out of 10 for this one. Ira Kaplan's nerdy week vocals do piss me off sometimes on a couple of tracks but songs like Cornelia and Jane on this album make me forgive because I think that song alone could well be their best and most beautiful yet.
