I think an important tip that you missed is teaching someone else to fly your drone, whether it be a little kid, a friend, a sibling, or even your parents. The moment is always so wholesome and gets me up and flying again. Its very motivating!

Good tips! 👍 There have been times I've had all the batteries charged, perfect flying weather, had the spare time to go flying but that 'excitement' was missing! I'd just make an excuse not to go and miss out on a great flying session.... Meeting up with a flying buddy helped me to get my 'mojo' back. 😊👍 Edit - Another factor that has negatively impacted my flying sessions is all the over regulation and constant rule changes, I find it all overwhelming sometimes and it makes me feel like I'm doing something 'wrong!'😮
I don't I get bored with my drones, I just get bored shooting in the same locations all the time. I think it's better to travel more, than to spend all you money on gear. Great video Russ, thanks for sharing.
I’ve only been flying a few weeks but I’ve been using Google to find different areas to fly. It’s fun being out and exploring places I’ve never been. Very good tips.
You are right this hobby can be a money maker that is how I started out and last year I made 52k in 8 months looking at 100k this year. I also let my local news stations use my videos for the news and even had PBS use some of my footage on one of there shows. I love the drone life and will continue doing this for a very long time!
Do you have any advice on how I can send my work to a news station and have it played? Or how I can start to make a few dollars with the mini 3? Thank you.
That last advice really struck a string in my heart, donating my time and ability to pilot a drone for non-profit organizations, this aligns with my values, so by helping others I shall be blessed!
Great video Russ! I would like to add an additional tip: Rather than randomly putting the drone in the air, try to create projects of varying scope. This will ensure purpose. These could be something like for example: -Perfecting a long complex waypoints mission around several POI:s. -Creating a transition between different flights of the same area. -Shooting and editing a 1 minute showreel for your town, your property, an event. Basically, setting targets for yourself, little and big challenges (not unsurmountable ones). I find with this structured "project" approach, flying feels more purposeful and never just random. Hey, it works for me anyway. YMMV. Take care Russ! 🌷
I swear I feel like you read my mind. 😂. I have the DJI FPV and the Mavic air for many years and barely fly now do to the restrictions. I do need to find a park that I can fly and not see a sign that says no drone. We pay so much for these quadcopter and barley use it . Good video. 👍
Great advice! I put my bird in the car before a doctors appt. once and when I was finished inside, popped it up in the parking lot and got some incredible shots of the area. Since Then its like my "man purse" when I go out somewhere/anywhere.
Man oh man Russ I lost interest during Covid. I was a essential worker! Now I’m months from retirement and I felt it’s time to play with all the money I spent. Bought a mini 3 and it sat in the box for a year. Charged it up and took it out and felt good. Went to charge up Mavic 2 and one battery is dead! Charged up Skydio 2 and one battery dead! Neglecting the drones I’ve been doing! I’m a in recovery now and hot swamped Skydio 2 to it took charge at a 1% charge. Now I’m going to get out again so I can enjoy again! Thanks Russ I needed this video.
Yes! Have a drone with You whenever there's a change of something to record! My "little friend" just suggested that! One thing to think about is the charged batteries.... Another way can be to sit down on a railroad hub and fly for recording trains. One day not much, the other day trains are swarming like flies.... Tip number 3, doing research.... Being slow to do it for common excursions, it's doubtful it will be done....
Using Google Maps is a good tip. Personally, I use the 3D view on Maps and Earth to scout locations. If it looks cool on Goolge, it will look even better with a drone. I use it to plan shots. My problem is what to do with the video and pictures. No one wants to watch an hour of raw video, flying around, setting up shots. The time it takes to edit down to something watchable brings me down.
Great tips! I've done almost everything you said to do..I use google earth all the time to find new places. I take my drones with me everywhere, I learned FPV last year with the Avata, I have flown events and accidents . The thing I did years ago was to always fly with goggles, my Bebop used my phone in split screen goggles, my evo 1 used the dronemask , used my phone in goggles for probably 8 years now. It always gave me the feeling of flying. The newer goggles ,like the integra are unbelievable!
I am burning through the RC hobby. I started on helicopters in 2013 before realizing that I'd be broke and tired of fixing rotorheads before I would ever be good enough to fly anything more interesting than a fixed pitch. I went to FPV in 2017-18 but mostly flew around slow in angle mode and tons of collecting dust. I actually had more fun getting it setup as it was a PNP kit. I bought a Mavic Air 2 a couple years later and spent the entire year exploring and getting some amazing shots. This put me back into FPV with vengeance and I have a fleet of freestyle, cinewhoops and even a long range rig with DJI O3. Here in 2024 I am bored again and bought a Arrma Vorteks 4x4 3S and I am a surface guy for the moment but I know I will go back to FPV....Mavic still resting in box though I do pull it out make sure it still boots and the batteries are still healthy around 50-75% charge.

Another way to keep from getting bored is to dig out that old drone that you have not flown in a while and get some air time. I started out with a Phantom. Now I do 99% of my flying with the Air 2S with a Mini as my backup. Regretfully my Phantom spends a great deal of time without seeing the sunshine. Dig out that old drone and see just how much you have forgotten about how fun it was to fly with another platform and another app. Charge that bad boy up and get it in the sky. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the adventure. I fly every day as there's nothing like the ability to fly. Ha ha...thanks for re-sharing your Avata practice video. I remember that day..no breeze...birds chirping..and some guy yelling f bombs in the back ground every time they crashed..lol. Have a great day
I bought the Holy Stone hs720g. Then I bought an fpv RTF kit. Then bought some used equipment from a guy. 3 drones. Goggles, a radiomaster tx16s, and a battery charger. Then, I bought the Tinygo 4k RTF kit. Now I have the avata because it bridges the gap between camera drone and fpv drone. My avata is for exploring places. I wouldn't want to crash my fpv drones.
Every once in awhile I'll switch it up by flying my air 2 or air 2 S to FPV mode. It's a little different for sure. I haven't been able to purchase FPV goggles, but I'm still thinking about it. Thanks for sharing

Recently I've been doing drone photography rather than constantly recording video which I might only watch once. I can share pictures with friends and if there are any really good ones can get these printed. I also produce a local magazine so it is great having some unique photos to include in this.
I really appreciate this video! Great work... I really like to stick the FPV googles on people, especially older people and fly for them. The joy I get and they get is unsurpassed! Also if I get the chance I'd like to do this for disabled people that can't get out much..so they can see their surroundings a little better!
The winter months in the UK with lots of rain has put my hobby on hold, but I am itching to fly. Will take these tips onboard to get myself back out there. Still learning manual mode with my Avata, can keep it in the air but the footage is still shakey.
Hi Russ, thank you for this! I have been letting my Air 2S collect dust and especially with the weather getting better soon, I've been thinking about reasons to get out and fly more. I gifted my dad my Mini SE for his birthday so we have a reason to get out together when we can, and I think it'll also make flying infinitely more fun!
wow, very impressive tips Russ, thanks , would you mind telling us, what are the best - move setting ie, gimble - yaw- speed setting and you are using now plz ? thanks
I probably needed to see this today. Living in a boring part of the area I sometimes lose my enthusiasm. Finding a few others that would like to fly would be great.
Drones can be used as a digital camera and put in places regular cameras would be more difficult to take pictures. Place the drone on the ground, on a shelf, in a tree, whatever, and take pictures or video from different vantage points (without fliying)
Always at least one drone in the car, but I've had the same challenges and found a few of these really helped, especially flying with others. But the biggest thing for me is now starting to capture video. I bought the drone as a stills photographer, and that's still my big motivator, but I'm forcing myself to capture at least ten clips or moves from each location and starting to build videos of the outings. Last night this worked out well because I only had time to get to a local place I've photographed hundreds of times, but I did not have any video footage at sunset, so I spent almost an hour getting footage and will try to edit it this weekend. The video editing skills have been very exciting for me. I appreciate you introducing me to CapCut!
I am a fan of yours, but don't relate to this video/editorial. I have been a Part 61 GA pilot for over 42 years, and a drone Part 107 pilot for over 8 years and every time I take off (either in a GA aircraft or with my drone), I still feel the thrill of flight that I did on my first flight. I am always planning flights that I want to do - some are months off due to weather and some will require some travel, but am always anxious to get there and do them. For me there is not enough time - never a loss of enthusiasm.
@@weseehowcommiegoogleis3770 I wish. My wife and I live in a mobile home manufactured in 1979 and we bought in 1999, and our only car is a 1980 Honda Accord with nearly 200,000 miles on it. My drone is the first aircraft owned. Perhaps you have heard the saying “The only thing better than owning a boat is having a friend that owns a boat”. The same applies to aircraft. Both my wife and I are north of 80 years old and fortunately in relatively good health. Thanks for your interest.
Outstanding subject for a video! Thanks! I liked and will use all your tips. However, I kinda paused at your first tip: Taking the drone with you everywhere so you have it if you need it. I hesitated because the process for getting geo fencing clearance/permission, while not complicated, would probably suck all the flying excitement out of me by the time I got the green light from DJI.
I have a question about using your drone for non profit organizations. Do you need a part 107 license to provide those types of organizations with drone footage? Like your example of the youth camp or maybe like a church camp or function? Thank you for the great videos.
Great video Russ. Thanks for your years of great advise and help flying drones. Have a mini 3 pro and recently suffered an eye injury, leaving me with one good eye and one not so good. Would FPV be a good option or are two eyes necessary for successful operation? Don’t know any other pilots that use FPV .
I’m finding it harder with these law and rules to go to places I like,so I basically stay around the house but I do like to take it with me when I travel 👍🇺🇸
Awesome ideas, the FPV flying does look interesting. I’m still fairly new to this hobby, only 3 months in. Looking for other hobbyists in my small town as well.
Thanks some good ideas. Tip 1 how do you keek your batteries charged and ready to go. Mine always drop down to about 60% when they have been sitting around for a week or two? Also there are some kick butt 3rd party apps (Litchi) that work with older drones like Air 2s and mini 2. Dynamic home point, follow me GPS, Waypoint mission created at hone 😊
After 4 years of flying that’s what happened to me Some of it is from RID some of it from already flown most of the areas around me I always carried my drone in the car but the last 3 or 4 months nope Thanks for the ideas
Great video Russ. I'm in that boat that I just think I've filmed everything there is to film in PR and lost interest in flying. Maybe trying one of the "smart modes" like doing a hyperlapse will get me going again!😊
That's very good advice because sometime I do get bored with my drones I have basically all of the DJI drones my brother said I have too many LOL but that was some very good advice Russell
Well, time is way too short to getting bored 😋. With new technologies I suggest to try out these augumented reality glasses from either apple vision pro or meta quest in combination with the (fpv) drone. Lot more exciting and the features they come with are really overwhelming. Yep, a total different experience.
I had a similar thought. I’m in Texas and have deer frequently in the back pasture. Can’t always tell antler size or point count. Kind of curious if they will take off when I fly over.
Gray area. Technically a non-profit is not a “business” because they aren’t in existence to make money. I would reach out and email your local FSBO to inquire. But if someone challenges you on it, they just aren’t a good human. 😁
I have been watching you when you started I remember when you hit 10k. I have the mavic 2 zoom . Not flying much wish there were more people in my area that had drones
I was flying my air2s in central Manchester in the uk the other Sunday morning when an old chap in a silver saloon car asked me if I had permission to fly,I said do I need permission ? he said yes and he would contact police if I didn’t stop flying drone.Just got the mini 4 pro will take that into town at weekend weather permitting.I suppose it’s like when you first meet your wife ,exciting etc but then something happens something you thought would never happen and she’s ok about you buying another drone, cool.
Help anyone out there! Does anyone know of a good release switch for a DJI Mini 2?? For small things like a fishing line..?? Thank you and if you have an Amazon link that would rock.
If I'm on the road, I have one packed. A DJI if I know the area or an Autel if I don't. My experience with DJI's geofencing is that it sometimes is overly aggressive - imposing limits well below what is permissible in the location I'm flying from. Autel doesn't do that. This may require a bit more work on my part to verify what I can and cannot do in a specific location, but I'm OK with that. And I also have the sub 250 gram versions for travel to locations where that's a necessity.
Hello I am an avid watcher of your RUclips channel but wanted to mention no one seems to be covering on the Mini 4 and how it has a (landing assist tool and will hunt out a landing pad )Most folks either catch or land in the elements .Have you ever mentioned it ?
Mindblow🤯I just got my avata, and flew it through my house after practicing on the simulator. Returning to my bedroom I freaked out: There's a weird guy with goggles in my bedroom! Wtf?? 😂😅😂😂
i want to turn off the 400 limit and go higher but im afraid if i will get in trouble lol. i dont think i will be tired of the drone. i got 25 miles in it in 2 months. still a newbie here.
In my situation, in the mid west, I have to “hope” for nice weather. And those nice days were always on days I was at work ! I’m recently retired now and plan to do a LOT more flying, since the park will be mostly empty of people. I have the DJI FPV, and just bought an Avata. Couldn’t agree with you more about the feeling of flight that you really don’t get from watching the view on a phone or tablet screen !
I think the reason people get bored with a drone is because there very easy to fly, they practically fly themselves.I fly model airplanes and I find there always a new challenge in flying them.I have been flying for over 40 years and I never get tired of flying,I love the hobby and owning a model airplane.
The worst problems are, firstly the short flying time and secondly the now almost universal prohibitions and preconceptions regarding drones and pilots!
My issue is I live in North Virginia and am a father to little kids. So there is restricted places I can fly and the times I can drive somewhere to fly is few and far between. Not sure what to do!

Do you have any tips on reviving a mavic pro battery rhat has sat unused for a few years?
Great video Russ , good tips for seasoned flyers and newbies alike
I am a fan of yours, but don't relate to this video/editorial. I have been a Part 61 GA pilot for over 42 years, and a drone Part 107 pilot for over 8 years and every time I take off (either in a GA aircraft or with my drone), I still feel the thrill of flight that I did on my first flight. I am always planning flights that I want to do - some are months off due to weather and some will require some travel, but am always anxious to get there and do them. For me there is not enough time - never a loss of enthusiasm.
You are extremely wealthy then.

I wish.
Super interesting video concept, and I appreciate the suggestions you made. Always top notch content.
I’m finding it harder with these law and rules to go to places I like,so I basically stay around the house but I do like to take it with me when I travel 👍🇺🇸
Spot on Russ. Great tips and video.
After 4 years of flying that’s what happened to me
Some of it is from RID some of it from already flown most of the areas around me
I always carried my drone in the car but the last 3 or 4 months nope
Thanks for the ideas
All great ideas, I must say! I heard you mention a simulator. Where can I get one and in your opinion which one is best to buy?
Very nice tips bro thanks
Love that hoodie Russ!
A great video. The tips make sense.
Hope it helps some folks!
Well, time is way too short to getting bored 😋. With new technologies I suggest to try out these augumented reality glasses from either apple vision pro or meta quest in combination with the (fpv) drone. Lot more exciting and the features they come with are really overwhelming. Yep, a total different experience.
Thanks Russ!
Check out your local Civil Air Patrol Squadron. They use drones in different missions.
Winter in MO is when I get bored with flying. When its brown and ugly. If there was some snow then it might be more interesting.
I had a idea of going out and looking for Deer and Elk Sheds the weather is changing here in ne oregon been having cabin fever
I had a similar thought. I’m in Texas and have deer frequently in the back pasture. Can’t always tell antler size or point count. Kind of curious if they will take off when I fly over.
Loved the video! I do have a question though. When flying for non-profits and things of that sort do I need a Part107 for that? Thanks!
Haven’t tested for the 107 yet, but thought I would get with some of the locals to ignite a service that a small community might not have.
good advice
If I'm on the road, I have one packed. A DJI if I know the area or an Autel if I don't. My experience with DJI's geofencing is that it sometimes is overly aggressive - imposing limits well below what is permissible in the location I'm flying from. Autel doesn't do that. This may require a bit more work on my part to verify what I can and cannot do in a specific location, but I'm OK with that.
And I also have the sub 250 gram versions for travel to locations where that's a necessity.
I haven't bought a drone yet, but I'm already watching video how to avoid getting bored with it :3
Hello I am an avid watcher of your RUclips channel but wanted to mention no one seems to be covering on the Mini 4 and how it has a (landing assist tool and will hunt out a landing pad )Most folks either catch or land in the elements .Have you ever mentioned it ?
Haven’t flown mine for like a year
How often do you guys fly per month?
Sooner or later you can't get battery's for them anymore. Now what do you do??
Is there any chance make Mavic 2 Zoom with DJI controller make compatible with the new FAA rules? Anybody has the same issue? Thanks
I think the reason people get bored with a drone is because there very easy to fly, they practically fly themselves.I fly model airplanes and I find there always a new challenge in flying them.I have been flying for over 40 years and I never get tired of flying,I love the hobby and owning a model airplane.
👍👍✌️ I’m there. I find just not interesting spots to shoot. Hardly flew at all last summer.
Thx Russ 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
The worst problems are, firstly the short flying time and secondly the now almost universal prohibitions and preconceptions regarding drones and pilots!
Thanks
Thank you!
My issue is I live in North Virginia and am a father to little kids. So there is restricted places I can fly and the times I can drive somewhere to fly is few and far between. Not sure what to do!
When I first got my drone thought I'd be flying every day. I use my footage to put in vfx projects like sci fi movies.
Joshua Bardwelll just put out a series on how to learn how fly FPV, it really worked for me, lots of time on simulator, but it really helped me
Im not bored of my mini 3, but here in Texas anymore, it seems the wind is always blowing so much. 🤬
How can you keep your drone on you at all times when DJI batteries are designed to drain to 60% after a few days idle
I don’t know. Maybe take it in the house at night and charge the batteries? 🤷🏻♂️🤪
@@51Drones what, every night. Just in case. Get real pal
Worst case…How about take your Drone with you a few days a week when you’re out and about.
We get the idea Ken…Thanks!!!
Pull it apart and put the parts on a plane. It is a bit tricky but can be done..
My rush comes back evey time there is an isolated thunderstorm a town over, And not raining by me :D
I have my Mavic Air 2 with me at all times, however, I can't use it anywhere in DC, VA or MD, it says "restricted zone" all the times....
