Note: Before using any of these methods make sure to check what is required to use a drone commercially in your country, as you may legally need to obtain a license or insurance first.
Matthew, Very helpful. I just shot a video of a hotel I'd stayed at last week not intending to sell it. But I happen to show it to the hotel manager and he offered me to pay me right on the spot. Its exciting to see all the possibilities. thank you for the info.
Great video. I won a Mini 2 at an event, and have really been enjoying learning to fly it. I hadn't even thought of trying to upload some of my footage for stock. I live in an incredibly beautiful part of the world and it's hard to take a bad shot. While the rest would take a lot of investment (mostly time) the first one I can do with what I already have and keep it a hobby. Cheers!
I'm retired and have a mini 2 se. My daughter gave it to me for my birthday. The money earning ideas All are interesting and doable. All of the videos you share have good content and are informative. Thank you for sharing.
Roof inspection sounds great for folks like me who live in rural areas. Lots of Farms, small businesses, and older homes where drones are few and far between. One could make a lucrative gig offering easy access to out of sight areas of property. And there's not much competition.
NEVER WORK FOR FREE. This mindset is killing the commercial photography field in general. Courses in Ecommerce or other fields that use media for advertising even flat out say that "you don't need to pay for photography anymore", just find people looking to add to their portfolios and use them for free. If you're watching this video, you need to realize lots of other people are watching it too (over 30 thousand views as I write this) and more will watch it in the future. TONS of people want to make money with their drones and business and property owners are approached all the time by people wanting to do drone work for them and do it for free. Why do you think that you'll do a project for free and then get paid for the next when there are a dozen other people behind you telling the customer they'll work for free also? They're NOT going to use you. This practice has to stop, so that we ALL can make a living!
I went from making a comfortable living in the 2000s to fighting for every gig in the past decade because of photography volunteers. It's made me consider doing volunteer plumbing and other gigs like that just to get back at these kinds of people. To prove a point!
Just watching this video that’s a year old, it has over 500k views so lots of folk out there looking to get in the market. Great point about not doing work for free, so what’s your top tip for building a portfolio that would help get paying clients..?
You need, drone something like Air2S and upper as mini is too weak for commercial use. A very powerful pc, and adobe or equivalent package to edit videos, a good skill to edit videos, drone commercial insurance, various drone licenses depending on country, and a 3D mapping training and software. For events like weddings and events you need to be a pro as it is an once a lifetime event... Sounds easy, but when you start looking at it for real it gets serious.
In US get your FAA 107 first if you are planning to use drone footage for $. Great tips - looking forward to finishing my 107 so I can do something besides hobby footage and of course "justify" a drone upgrade ;-P
Great point! In the UK you just need commercial insurance to get started. You are right though, these expensive drones need some sort of justification! ha!
And the same is true for Australia, you have to get a (UAV) pilots licence, insirance for the drone and public liability insurance. You also have register your drone with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.if you plan on using any footege commercially, not just for money but any other use thent is not for "fun".
You always put out great content! I just purchased a DJI Mini 2 and I have been putting out RUclips videos as well as reaching out to Real Estate agents, so this video has given me a few more ideas. Thank you!
Great video. But in Australia lots of guys are registering their drone to make money but the insurance premium is high so lots of guys are doing the drone work under the table… no insurance goes up on registering the drone… People just will not pay big prices for aerial footage unless you’re lucky to get a big company that will do it.

It’s worth mentioning that in the U.S you need Part 107 certification from the FAA to use your drone in any commercial way. Their wording is “in the furtherance of any business”. As an example: if you took video of a resort and gave the footage to the owner for free, but the owner then used the footage in marketing materials, you would be in violation.
You are correct. As I understand it, even if someone posts a drone video on RUclips, and it’s monetized, they’re in violation of the law. I believe the fines can be substantial.
@@almccallie4314 The fines are absolutely outrages and at some points becoming astronomical. I’m in a local drone forum in my region of Texas and a few guys gloated about flying their drones for hire without a part 107. Within a few weeks the FAA sent some people down from Oklahoma City (or wherever) and caught all four guys doing what they were doing and sure enough they fined them. They then went straight to the forums crying about it like they were a victim of some sorts. The fines were in the low few thousands of dollars and I am not even joking. You can do anything that you want to illegally but the minute you get on social media and gloat and loudmouth about doing something with a smart elec (catch me if you can) mentality you will then be specifically targeted which is what happened to these four guys. Their arrogance pissed off enough people to where it warranted a group of investigators to come find them and they did. This applies to people who will put something on RUclips to show off with a captured on video and then monetize it. Unless you’re a part 107 pilot don’t ever post drone footage on RUclips. My point is that yes, you are correct about the monetizing.

I'm just now getting back into the drone hobby and hope one day turning it into profit. I just bought the mavic 3 and planning on doing roof inspection and maybe mapping if the mavic 3 is capable. For now I need to get familiar and learn all the ends and out of the drone before getting started.

Love your videos, and I was watching @Flytpath, Aldryn, he makes awesome bags for the Mini 2, and even made a coffee table book of his drone shots, I hadn't even thought of that 👍
I was thinking of a drone to buy for my historic research, quite handy to view current locations to old aerial photos but would like to offer one of the services offered such as weddings building inspection etc, what would be a good drone to use i was thinking of a DJI mini 3 pro or a DJI Avanta, which one would be a better option for business use.
Wow, it's so cool. I even didn't realize how you can make real money with drone. Maybe I can make some budget with it for my teenager life)) Like from me.
In the UK I’m sure you need the applicable license if you wanted to do some paid jobs as well as insurance. It’s normally dictated by the size of the drone, whether it has a camera or not, how far you are from people, what category of buildings (historical/commercial etc) are within a specified distance, pre written permission and so on. Haven’t looked at it for a while so may be wrong, but think it was the start of 2021 that they brought in the new format 🤷🏼♂️
In the UK you can now earn money with any drone, no licence required. You would need Insurance and pay taxes though. The biggest drawback is that the bigger drones with the better cameras are much more restricted. You can take extra qualifications for those that reduce the distance from people etc, but not to the same extent as the sub 250g category. The mini 3 may have a better camera that solves this problem.
Hi Mattheww, great video. I like this update to your last one. I will try aerial photography for real estate agencies. I will look into that now because I can do that over weekends or in my spare time. As for stock footage, what sites would you recommend from experience that might actually sell? I tried stock footage before but never got any sales. I am not sure what I am doing wrong there, but I will look into that again.
The best approach is to put your footage on as many of the sites as possible, instead of putting all your eggs in one basket. Hope that helps, thanks for watching.
@@TheDroneCreative Thank you for the reply. I will create accounts in all of them. I think I will go through all the footage I have, edit them into interesting clips and color correct them. Do your LUTs work on OpenShot or Shotcut? Also, what is the average length each clip should be? That is, should I make short 15s videos or long 2min videos or somewhere in between?
@@seupedro9924 I have not had time to put my footage up yet, I intend on doing that over the holidays. I need to edit what I have and make it interesting (and short). As for realestate, I have contacted a few agencies and they were interested, so I might get some work done on that in the near future. I will also try selling to hotels. I have made a point of filming the locations I travel to so I will edit those and try to sell to those.
All the ways to make money with a drone Im impressed by, studying to get my part 107 here in the US I thought I would do a youtube channel to teach legal rules when it comes to drones here in the US and the world cause every country has different rules and doing some comparing and contrasting while doing events and realstate photography
Hey Mattew just bought my first drone mini2 and find you’re videos great I live in belfast and was wondering if we could get a catchup and get some tips from you cheers
Hey there, I was just wondering if anyone could help me. I am looking for drone mapping software that can be used with the Mini 2 or SE. Drone Deploy, which is shown in video only support bigger drones?
In the event you're hired to shoot drone footage for an event flying over people, other than airspace authorization, is there anyone you need permission from to fly over the crowds?
Hi Matthew, really enjoying your videos. I'm a landscape photographer and I'm looking to add drone videography to my portfolio. I am stuck between getting a mavic mini 2 or a mavic 2s? Which would give the better end product in your opinion? I have never flown a drone before so which one I get will be my first.
The Mini 2 is a great beginner drone that produces fantastic footage but for commercial content, the better quality camera on the Air 2S will prove valuable! Thanks for watching, hope that helps.
asked my realtor friend if I could shoot houses for sale for a small fee. next I knew he bought a drone himself. exactly my thought: why hire when they can do it themselves. it's not hard to by a drone. everyone can have it.
Maybe 5 years ago!! I passed my PFCO (permission for commercial work) then. I had only 2 commercial jobs after that then nothing.. the market is saturated now because a lot of large and small businesses just add a drone to their already established business as another “tool” if you’re a photographer, videographer in property weddings etc. or a surveyor then great “your in” but starting from scratch as a drone pilot good luck😏 it’s not that easy to get in. first of all you need to do a course to get you commercial qualification. in the uk that is now The A2cofC for flying in the “open category” (non congested areas only) or for flying in congested areas you will need a GVC which is now about £600 if not you will be flying illegally! and risk a prison sentence.
Yes, i think this video is a bit misleading as it is much easier said than done. The market is very saturated with so many drone pilots out there. If you want to sell anything, you need a license like you said, not to mention that to fly in busy areas is extremely complicated due to the many rules out there.
Hi Matthew. Thank you for making this video. Based on your accent I imagine you are located somewhere in the UK. Can you tell me if a license is required to earn money from operating a drone in the UK? In Australia it is but I am moving to the UK next week
Stock Photography is not a guaranteed way to develop an income stream - it's very speculative with no guarantee of a possible return and extremely hard to identify popular subjects. The site I upload to doesn't allow me to see what uploads are the most popular and all I get is a list of searched for keywords. Yes, you could upload a video on a theme of nature but do you have any idea how many videos you're already competing with out there? As for shooting popular landmarks, if they're popular then they will have already been done to death.
I don’t know, maybe these can work if you are a videographer or photographer and buy a drone. But I don’t think this can work if you are a normal user 🤔🤔
Hmmm.....nice idealistic view. But in real hotels dont have time when they even hear the word drone video or drone promotion video etc. Your talking as if theres a demand. There zero WANT bec drone flying has become so common that every guest that stays in the hotel comes out with his drone and says he will capture footage and share it with the hotel and he feels a big thrill doing this. I have done several hotels at low costs like 50-100 usd to build a portfolio and then got some OK paying clients also. And so now have the double the portfolio and some professional promo films show with multiple 4K cameras, lights, etc NO TAKERS....as time went by it became so common every riff raff is walking around with a gimbal and a drone. They profess themselves to be VIDEO PRODUCERS and offer free shoots to get free food or free stay in the hotels with their girlfriends. I have a Van full of equipment literally and have learned just owning a drone and a 4K camera doesnt make you a video production business. The final film these guys make is a sloppily put together video. Its only professionals who know how many man hours and how much equipment is needed to create a pro result. The devil is in the finesse and details. But the hotel owners are HAPPY with the amateurish looking video mashup. Zero business now. Almost closing down. So these money making ideas are all easy to talk and tell people its possible. Even i can make a video that its easy to become like Micheal Jackson, there are dancers with so much talent starving and homeless. The only one getting rich is the youtuber making the video. Dont promise false dreams. I saw videos on RUclips etc 8-9 years ago and started following this dream (that too my education was in media, 3d and such associated technical fields). Yet technology is making it too difficult for art to survive, they dont want a drone....click a few buttons in GOOGLE MAPS and it gives a you a 3d fly thru of any part of the world even close up of buildings etc. Now AI. Ive become a dinosaur before i could even recover what i invested.
I bought my mini 2 as the cost of getting scaffolding to check a house roof I was thinking of buying out was more expensive and way slower. It paid for itself immediately as the roof wasn’t great . Id been looking for an excuse to buy a drone for ages! Great video thanks.
Great use of a drone, I used a friends one to inspect my own roof so I knew what the issue was before I got roofers in. They then tried to claim the issue was bigger than it was... Once I showed them the drone footage showing two loose tiles... they suddenly came up with an ''option b'' for repairing the roof!!! Needless to say I sent them on their way and got someone else to do it, but it saved me 3 times the cost of the drone.
Shutterstock or any other online library dont want videos or photos from a Mini 2 or 3 cause of the bad mpq/jpg footage quality. Even when you filter the footage with ae or encoder and change it to hires mov or mfx, its not good enough for shutterstock. 🤨
Thank you for putting you background music in the right place! Behind your voice! Lol so many people get this wrong. If you don’t have a video about this , it would be a good idea!
I’m not having a go at you I do like your content. In Australia to make one cent from your drone it must be registered with casa and that is usually around $40 a drone. Not a lot of money but if you are caught define is a lot more than $40. Plus I’m not sure whether you need a license too I could doublecheck this right now but it’s 2:30 am and just watching a few RUclips videos to try and go to sleep. 👍 so that is one more thing to think about when making money from your drone it just depends on what part of the world you live in. This is why I’m very scared to even post videos on RUclips I do have some good video edits but I am too scared to share them.
All good! In the UK you only need commercial insurance to get started, I believe in the US you need a Part 107. It's different depending on where you are in the world. If you are only starting on RUclips you won't be making money from it initially so I am pretty sure that counts as a hobbyist. Thanks for your info, appreciate it.
@@TheDroneCreative Yeah I’ve heard in Australia some people with a grey area in the law have been fined with RUclips videos. Now I can’t prove that I have just heard through the grapevine. Your video is a great video man I just thought I’d say something about that I hope you don’t mind. 👍😎
@@TheDroneCreative ruclips.net/video/7QmYNqDhmLo/видео.html This is also a great video for Australians but it is pretty funny for anybody to watch recommend it.
Mad Max: If you are commercially registering a 250 grams or smaller drone in Australia, with CASA then the cost is $0. You will also need to go through a drone course for commercial use. That also costs $0. The only thing you may need to pay for is insurance for your registered business. Have a look on the CASA website BTW Matt. Great video
I’m not trying to make money with mine but I did shoot a local bike parade and created a short 15 second reel with it. It got way more attention than I anticipated so I can understand how the right contact points can get you a paid gig.
Very relieved that you took the time, at the end, to reminded everyone about the Drone Rules. Many of these suggestions would cross a drone rule line at some point unless you have the correct qualification and know what can and can not be done with your particular drone (the weight limitation). MANY good suggestions here though. The mapping one is interesting, but because it's currently considered "niche" it can be mind-numbingly expensive.
@@Wreckz_Tea having a real camera is also required most of the time to combine both aerial and terrestrial shots. Let's say you wanna promote a hotel. Using a drone is perfect to value the outside look of the building and its surrondings (beach, pool, tennis courts, etc...) but you need to remember that a hotel is a place you go to sleep so you HAVE to show the entrance hall, the restaurant and some rooms
@@BlockMasterT Don't forget that even with a DJI drone, you can hand hold the drone to either take stills or to take video with the gimbal stabilizing the footage while you walk through the hotel.
Just note for any of you who are planning to do drone related jobs you’ll need a certified license UAG if you don’t want to get into legal trouble otherwise do so at your own risk
Note: Before using any of these methods make sure to check what is required to use a drone commercially in your country, as you may legally need to obtain a license or insurance first.

Happy to help, thanks for watching!
Thank you man, great 🔥🔥🔥
I'm looking at a Mavic air 2 for $800 NZD ($488 USD) with the fly more combo 2nd hand, is it worth it?
I was thinking of a drone to buy for my historic research, quite handy to view current locations to old aerial photos but would like to offer one of the services offered such as weddings building inspection etc, what would be a good drone to use i was thinking of a DJI mini 3 pro or a DJI Avanta, which one would be a better option for business use.
I liked my drone for 2 yrs, then I tried the ocean, on a boat. I missed that drone!
Do we need degree? I’m asking before I watched the whole video.
Wow, it's so cool. I even didn't realize how you can make real money with drone. Maybe I can make some budget with it for my teenager life))
Like from me.
Same here I ireland but I don't always do what I say lol rich men don't get rich by paying taxes 😅
Pretty sure this would be the case in a lot of countries for most of his list.
@@stephengibbons thanks for clarifying and here’s hoping for an awesome camera in the mini 3.
Good grief.
Don't you require insurance to be paid to do work? Also the size of the drone matters as to where you csn fly it (near people)
Hi Mattheww, great video.
What a great guy this Matathewuw is!
How is it going?
Excellent video could you put the names of the sites that you can sell video on please
Thanks for the good channel. Subscribe and will watch... 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻I like all 👊🏻
Happy New Year. I have a small drone ,can it be used to make money . Your drone is large. My drone was bought from Amazon for £37.99.
@@TheDroneCreative Thank you pal. I appreciate your reply.
asked my realtor friend if I could shoot houses for sale for a small fee.
next I knew he bought a drone himself.
exactly my thought: why hire when they can do it themselves.
it's not hard to by a drone. everyone can have it.
Ask female realtors.
Very interesting video I've only been flying my SE Mini for a week so would be interesting to see if I can earn any money back from the purchase 👀
Not any more. Earn money with any drone without any qualifications.
@@stephengibbons if you get caught, good luck paying the fine hehehe
Yes, i think this video is a bit misleading as it is much easier said than done. The market is very saturated with so many drone pilots out there. If you want to sell anything, you need a license like you said, not to mention that to fly in busy areas is extremely complicated due to the many rules out there.
@@danielbroomhall8882 No fine, read the rules.
@@stephengibbons your very naïve if follow that path
Quick question: How long on average does it take for one to become a professional drone pilot?
By law, a licensing course that you can take in a day
Do you have your part107 certificate?
Hi Matthew. Thank you for making this video. Based on your accent I imagine you are located somewhere in the UK. Can you tell me if a license is required to earn money from operating a drone in the UK? In Australia it is but I am moving to the UK next week
His accent isn’t British. Don’t know what it is though?
❤❤❤
Γειά σας έχω πάρει από ιδιοτη ένα drone mini combo 2 είναι καλό σε ποιότητα
YOU NEED TO BE FAA CERTIFIED TO FLY A DRONE COMMERCIALLY! You can't just buy a drone and make money with it without passing the FAA Part 107 exam.
You forgot: Making RUclips videos of how to to make money of of drones
Nice video, remember if you are in the US you need an FAA 107 license to make money legally.
In Soviet Russia, FAA need part 701 license from you!
What tool do you use to produce videos? Or is there any YT-video that discusses the best video editing software? thanks!
Pre COVID I was making tons of money from wedding drone videography
And why not anymore? Pandemic is over
👍👍👍
I don’t know, maybe these can work if you are a videographer or photographer and buy a drone. But I don’t think this can work if you are a normal user 🤔🤔
Fun fact: most places have already either hired one of the thousands of drone pilots out here or they have bought a drone themselves and learn.
Stock sites are a rip off. I sold around 40 images and received less than 5 pounds . Its a joke. Don't waste your time
Hmmm.....nice idealistic view.
Do what?
So you still had to pay for scaffolding to repair the roof ?
@@divingbikingviking2002 well he did say he was "thinking" of buying the house. I'm guessing he did not.
@@divingbikingviking2002No I’m guessing he didn’t buy the house and instead ended up with a £500 drone to look at one house roof 😂
Never work for free when it comes to an assignment that one would normally have to pay for.
This video been watched with 275000 businessman
Do you still need a drone license?
Shutterstock or any other online library dont want videos or photos from a Mini 2 or 3 cause of the bad mpq/jpg footage quality. Even when you filter the footage with ae or encoder and change it to hires mov or mfx, its not good enough for shutterstock. 🤨
What are you talking about Mini 3 has 4K footage
Thank you very much! I didn't know how many opportunities you have, when you own a drone! :)

Absolutely not, I really appreciate the comment - have an awesome night! (or really early morning, ha!)
@@TheDroneCreative ruclips.net/video/7QmYNqDhmLo/видео.html
This is also a great video for Australians but it is pretty funny for anybody to watch recommend it.
Mad Max: If you are commercially registering a 250 grams or smaller drone in Australia, with CASA then the cost is $0. You will also need to go through a drone course for commercial use. That also costs $0. The only thing you may need to pay for is insurance for your registered business. Have a look on the CASA website
BTW Matt.
Hi.. Very interesting your comment there about niche abs really expensive..mind filling me in please? Thx, Stef
I think it's worth mentioning that with a lot of these photography businesses, you'll want more than just a drone camera.
I didn't know that I'd like to hear What you would suggest
@@Wreckz_Tea having a real camera is also required most of the time to combine both aerial and terrestrial shots.
Let's say you wanna promote a hotel. Using a drone is perfect to value the outside look of the building and its surrondings (beach, pool, tennis courts, etc...) but you need to remember that a hotel is a place you go to sleep so you HAVE to show the entrance hall, the restaurant and some rooms
@@GuilM in theory you could just hold the drone and take a photo with it. Might not work as well though
@@hoocli If a high quality camera is just mounted on a drone, you could just unmount it. This doesn’t work with DJI drones though
