this is the kinda stuff that defines video gaming for me. the culmination of the climax to a story, the difficulty of the encounter, and an mega epic score all come together to make something truly special. final fantasy = video games.
Even now after Dawntrail I still think this is the best "final" boss in all of FFXIV, both in mechanics, music, and storyline its just so perfect. Other expansions had better overall stories and stuff but this as a big fight with Zenos is S tier stuff, no other final boss comes close except maybe Hades.
I always love the heroic flourishes with their themes. I was a WoW player for most of my life and they never seemed to understand that games are also a work of art, especially with their musical themes. The lead into the Stormblood boss theme is amazingly perfect and beautiful. I replay so many fights in the game because they’re fun, they’re enjoyable, and they connect emotionally. And the theme is perfect because it’s the hope of the people in Doma and Yangxia against the horrors and suffering inflicted by Zenos and the Garlean Empire. Jumping to FF14 was totally worth it.
This, this is how you do a final a boss. On an beautiful stage of battle with an amazing battle theme to go with the majestic beast you're fighting. Props to SE for this fight. Jonathan Joestar Mmm so Bismarcks theme is better than this theme? So Zurvans theme is better than this theme? The only theme that trumps this is Niddhogs and Thordans. And then the extreme where he stabs his tail into the arena and you have to run across to the other platform as he shoots lasers at you. Its just. Chef’s kiss. FFXIV just nails it with the presentation of the fights.
I *LOVE* the transition from the phase theme unique to this fight back to Stormblood's main dungeon end boss theme. As I said before about Revenge Twofold in 3.4, I love when the OST does a good job of making callbacks to other tracks.
This brought a tear to my eye from the sheer epicness of it, a battle truely fitting the Warriors of Light. What would I do to that eikon Zenos, Kill it? You're godamn right....

I'm still having trouble wrapping my gods damned mind around this fight. It's just...so good. Like you said, it has that old Final Fantasy feel, I could easily see Shinryu as the final boss of a 16-bit era game. Kinda reminded me of Neo Exdeath with the background, actually. And the music! It hits every note right to get across that feeling of finality and "Oh hey, you're fighting a dragon god that created a PROTO PLANET JUST TO FIGHT YOU". Like holy shit, Shinryu is infinitely more powerful than Bahamut ever was. I mean sure, Bahamut destroyed Eorzea and would have done the same to the whole world, but Shinryu? Shinryu has the power to create an entire planet, not to mention the complete control over ALL the elements. Bahamut can go succ a bicc dicc, Shinryu for life.
The DF group I had for this may have wiped a lot, but this was literally the best fight EVER in FFXIV. T13 was close, but this is better, with the music and the mechanics. Good for samurai too, since I didn't need to worry about positionals!
This whole thing is a massive nod to FF1. Zenos becomes Shinryu just as Garland becomes Chaos, their only motivation in doing so, their sole reason to do so, being to kill you, the Warriors of Light. You fight Garland/Chaos on a bunch of blue, floating crystal square tiles with a strange, space-like background behind you, and Chaos floating just off the stage where you stand. Chaos hails you with attacks of all elements, just as Shinryu uses all 2.0 Primal's strongest signature attacks. Literally everything about it is a nod to the original Final Fantasy, and it's fucking amazing, not to mention what an absolutely stunning boss fight (my favorite fight in the entire game by far) and an amazing way of wrapping up this amazing expansion besides. I don't think they could've ended it better, this and the last dungeon just really brought everything together so beautifully. Well fucking done on this one, SE. Just phenomenal.
MoonlightMura Not to mention since Shinryu is a boss from both FFV and several of the older games' remakes, it is literally just SE going back to their roots. Also, dat music swell, doe. Gods, I was on the edge of my seat with each death and rebirth cycle. FAVORITE PRIMAL FTW!
He is based on Vayne Solidor actually, not Garland. He is the imperial viceroy to an occupied nation and happens to be the son of the emperor. Him fusing with Shinryu is more like how Vayne fused with Sky Fortress Bahamut. Which is why he is the leader of the XIIth legion like Nael was the leader of the VIIth and was based on Sephiroth and Regula was the leader of the VIth and was a part of the Warring Triad storyline.

When 1:47 plays exactly when you're running over his tail in the extreme version
Ah, I didn't know that as I'd never played XII, but that bit about the legion names is pretty interesting, that's really cool.
Zythrone Fitting, given that FFXII: The Zodiac Age is coming out pretty soon
Shinryu is also using the ultimates of Ifrit, Garuda, Titan, Ramuh, Shiva, and Leviathan
I spent 2 and a half hours on this fight...and I ain't even mad cuz the music is so fucking bomb
