That was very helpful. Especially the bit about electric guitars. That's exactly what I needed to know

I color wood with inexpensive hair dye and it comes out gorgeous.
I find that I get a higher quality visual with my technique.
You should give it a try. I mix different colors to reach the desired color. I can go Red, Green, Purple etcetera...The dollar store sells it for $3.00 dollars a bottle and you can mix only what you need and save what you don't use for a good period of time. Its a great use for matching scratches in antique furniture also.

Oh yeah, I used it to make a multi color handle for a blade I made.
I cut down some white oak into thin layers, I dyed each color using the hair dye, glued them all together and sanded it down on the edges exposing the different layers of color. The dye made it look so beautiful. Really easy stuff, but like stain, the longer it sets, the deeper the penetration. Just an idea for you in the future.
      Thanks for the video's

@@Invisible-Human1967Is the dye a powder? What do you mix it with and then just brush it on let it sit for a bit and wipe off? What brand is the hair dye???

No, it's just cheap hair dye from family dollar. It's two parts liquid you have to mix. Mix what you need in a cup and brush it on. Use it just like stain. It just offers colors that you can't get in other stains. It's permanent and beautiful.

Can you sand the dyed wood without removong the colour? I’m thinking of something like splined corners with contrasting colours.

I still have some antique cherry water base stain from 1993. down to 40oz. that I am still using on raw wood. made about three gallons. I have been using it as a base for other warm tone stains

My wife does tie dye so I use the leftover dyes to dye my shop pieces, containers, etc. For example, I have homemade sanding blocks using ROYGBIV for a reference of increasing grits 80 - 320.

I also use acetone as a carrier for the liquids. It seems to flash slower than the alcohol

    I am living in Malaysia.
I want to make a (something of a) cutting board table top island.
I am thinking of adding dye, and coffee ), and wood stains and other things for color to some to some cheap 1 by 2's on the on the long end of the green (not the wide end) but the 1" end.
Then, I will glue them altogether - hopefully they will be straight! - and sand them down only to a degree that is necessary, hoping the stain will not be removed.
    Question :
    What to use?
Water based or oil based to get it as deep as possible, knowing i will HAVE to sand it down.
What stain or dye or whatever can penetrate enough that I can sand (a little) and still keep the color?
Anything I can do to make it absorb deeper? It's HOT here in Malaysia (34°C/93° F) and I assume this will help.
    Should/could I heat the wood?
After that I want to put in some - I think, based on what I've read - mineral oil, then top it off with bees wax.
    Any thoughts?

I am looking to make colorful outdoor carved wood projects that can have a watercolor effect. Will dyes work in this way? Also, as these will be outdoors, for the most part, I am looking for light fast colors. Do you know if there are light fast dyes?

All dye. All the time. I will never use stain on indoor work ever again. Dye is glorious and 100x more beautiful than any stain

Please explain again about “raised grain”.

    • @abcaabca6364
      @abcaabca6364 Год назад

He was using water based dye. The water will "raise the grain". Helps to first wipe the wood with water, dry, and sand. Then using the dye will cause less grain to rise. As he said, usually does not require much to take the grain down. Alcohol based dye doesn't raise the grain as much.
