When I saw the Who do the 20th anniversary of Tommy in New York he did this song and it was a real highlight. Great album and I agree a highly underrated album.
My son (Pete; who I've always believed was secretly named after Mr. Townshend) LOVES this video, and we have watched it about 50 times (I'm sure more will come). I'm so glad Pete Townshend was so into the Iron Giant!
The book was called The Iron Man. The animated film, which is not related to this charming video clip, was called The Iron Giant. All three are charming, thank you for posting this 'un.
I was fascinated with this video when i was little (born in 89, so its as old as me). Now my son is obsessed with it too. Thank you for the upload. Brings back so many memories ❤
Pete's lifelong 'spiritual counsel' Meher Baba may have inspired this song, which is a simple celebration of friendship--- Ella blushed and said, “Yes, Baba. You know I cannot accept you as God, but is it all right if I take you as my friend?” Baba smiled broadly and replied, “I am the best friend ever. I am Father, I am Mother, Brother, Child, Beloved - whatever you take me to be - and I am God. If you cannot accept Baba as God, that should not worry you. Accept Baba as a true friend. I am God undoubtedly; but it is difficult for the Western mind to accept the concept of God in human form.
Was lucky enough to have grown up, read the book and seen this video of such a powerful song before the Iron Giant came along. And my god what a movie, still one of my top 5 to this day.
when i saw theWho in Boulder, Colrado, 30th Anniversary tour, under a full moon - on 'shrooms - ther Who took a break, petre did his songs - face ther face, trough boys, a friend is a friend-sounded just like the record - he had the original singers, etc. i love him.
When I was a boy I heard this song the first time. This is the most powerful song about friendship I've ever heard. "A friend is a friend, nothing can change that". To be friends with good people and be good to them is to know Jesus.
+Joe Izzo i certainly do since most people of my generation[no pun intended!!] seems to only know THE WHO from the CSI series I'VE always loved this song and of course the IRON giant was one of my favourite stories as a wee lad!! ENJOY!!
@11xzxzxz Pete: The greatest rock songwriter and performer + Roger: The greatest vocalist and frontman + John: The greatest bassist of all-time + Keith: The greatest rock drummer of all-time = THE GREATEST ROCK BAND OF ALL-TIME!! Any questions?
For some odd reason, maybe it was the time, but I always relate this music video to a clive barker story called, the skins of the fathers. HOw Gruesome.
Warner Brothers was looking to bring this version to the big screen and had already optioned it, but Brad Bird had a different approach and created his animated movie, which Pete Townshend had an executive producer credit on, and he enjoyed the movie.
Welll....I tend to agree w/ you there but he's had his share of cheese in his later solo projects...But he's 90% and that's DAMN good for any songwriter.
@scartissue94 Warner Brothers, Disney, whatever. The story it's based on was straight from British poet Ted Hughes. Even Pete Townsend would be proud to admit that.
This isn't about the Iron Giant, it's about a book by Ted Hughes called the Iron Man. Disney later made their film based on the same book, but they changed the name because they didn't want it conflicting with the comic book character.
Just finished reading Pete's autobiography, also read Roger's at the same time. So I was interested in the music Pete made towards the end. And it's shit. Tommy, Live at Leeds, Who's Next and Quad are his legacy. This is poor.

Pete has an executive producer credit on The Iron Giant.
Commitment forever, to borrow or lend. Deliver your future into the hands of your friend.
Pete is a great hero
"This album was based on the 1968 novel The Iron Man: A Children's Story in Five Nights by ted hughes..."
Sylvia Plath's husband.
Wore the cassette tape down to the point I didn't want to risk putting in the deck!
I heard that this song was meant to be in the iron giant movie
When I saw the Who do the 20th anniversary of Tommy in New York he did this song and it was a real highlight. Great album and I agree a highly underrated album.
It's not the law that Every fucking You Tube video has to include a ridiculous "underrated" comment..
@@sirandrelefaedelinoge It took you ten years to respond to that? Have a nice day.

I have to point out that this came out in 1989 and the Iron Giant came out 10 years later. you could say the Iron Giant was into this song 😀

This is pretty surreal to see after growing up watching The Iron Giant. Great song, though.

Jesus is dead. Maybe better just to follow the golden rule regardless of religion.
"A life-long alignment of boats, beans and trains. Boats, beans and trains."
Sorry, I literally missed the like button.
I love this video and the book is awesome, the movie is awesome. The REAL Iron Man cannot fail!

So... Who is the greatest rock band of all time? Just want to be sure. ;)
It was a book by Ted Hughes.
Love It!!!
A friend is a friend nothing can that arguments squabbles can't break the contract
Joe I sure remember it!
I remember this.
I believe the Who played this on the 1989 tour.
I saw them in July 1989 at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. My first rock and roll show ever.
Yeah they played it. Saw this tour @ Giants Stadium. It was my first concert too
Yeah, they also played a live version of the(ir) song Dig from and on The Iron Man Pete Townshend solo album from that same year.
@DonBoby That's amazing! Wow. Thank you, it's cool to know that.
Hogarth lives!
Moral: You can't keep a good (Iron) man down.

Well I hope whoever did that The Iron Giant movie paid Pete Townshend some royalties!

@scartissue94 No worries man, it's a great song :)
sylvia plath...ted
What the shit, Pete.
why does the Iron Man walk off the cliff???
faster than walking?
It's how the Iron Giant story itself begins contextually.
This is an incredibly cheesy song and incredibly cheesy video...but I fell for it all the same.
Shoulda just stopped after the release of 'Who Are You'.
Haha
CHRIST THIS SONG SUCKS
Sounds like your life sucks worse 😅
Just finished reading Pete's autobiography, also read Roger's at the same time.
