I learned that the subway scene in Tokyo was totally unscripted and they didn’t have permits to film there. That would have been hilarious to see on your morning commute, the beastie boys rapping in engineering outfits!

In watching this video for the first time and watching the mixed reaction from subway riders, my first thought was did they get permits or did they wing it? Thanks for clarifying that! 😂

Although it has recently been rezoned and has become beautiful, it is a shame that it has lost its former charm. In recent years, Shinjuku Station in this video has become very beautiful.
In the 1990s, members of the Beastie Boys came to Tokyo many times and introduced New York street culture to Japan. Thank you very much for your love from Japan. Rest in peace MCA." -Google Translate

Always liked them but only found out a few years ago how complete they actually were when I saw a live version of Sabotage with actual guitars etc. My love of rap and hip hop was almost something I had to keep secret during school, my teens etc. Because I was in indie bands and they didn't really mix, I used to go to what we my city called urban nights etc. In clubs on the down low because I was worried my fellow musicians would think I was a phoney when in actuality a lot of those guys had beastie boys, wu tang and Eminem albums and respected the genre and the only person being phoney was me for not embracing it and even attempting to use it in the music.

Well, now, don't you tell me to smile
You stick around I'll make it worth your while
My number's beyond what you can dial
Maybe it's because we're so versatile
    Style, profile, I said
It always brings me back when I hear, "ooh, child!"
From The Hudson River out to the Nile
I run the marathon to the very last mile
Well, if you battle me I feel reviled
People always sayin' my style is wild
You've got gall, you've got guile
    Step to me I'm a rap-o-phile
If you want to battle you're in denial
Comin' from Uranus to check my style
Go ahead, put my rhymes on trial
    Cast you off into exile
    Intergalactic, planetary, planetary, intergalactic
    Intergalactic, planetary, planetary, intergalactic
Jazz and A.W.O.L, that's our team
Step inside the party, disrupt the whole scene
When it comes to beats, well, I'm a fiend
I like my sugar with coffee and cream
Well, I gotta keep it going keep it going full steam
Too sweet to be sour to nice to be mean
Well, on the tough-guy style I'm not too keen
Trying to change the world, I'm going to plot and scheme
Mario C. likes to keep it clean
    Gonna shine like a sunbeam
Keep on rappin', 'cause that's my dream
Thank Moe Dee for 'Sticking to Themes'

I am known to do the wop
Also known for the Flintstone Flop
Tammy D gets biz on the crops
Beastie Boys known to let the beat
    Mmm, drop!
Now when I wrote graffiti my name was Slop

Using the electronic influence combined with a hip/hop baseline and some pretty unique cadence really did produce an enigamatic sound. This video is legendary. What I love about it is it takes more than just Kaiju (giant monsters) from Japanese media. The shots, the costumes, the choreography, it's super Japanesy.
On top of that they used a recording technique that would be used in music videos EVERYWHERE later:
They would perform the song in a slower or faster pace on camera, then correct the pace of the video to match the song tempo, making either a hyper or airy feeling.
This is legendary, and the song is one of the best rap songs ever made.
