Thanks again for your awesome channel. Something to add. So after servicing the DTC and changing the oil cooler lines I started experiencing hesitation at peak torque. I though it was engine related. Nope. Turned out to be the tranny. When replacing oil cooler lines you need to complete the other items in the Insta menu for DCT. Flushing, setting slipping points ETC. Once done the hezzitation was GONE.
Can all of that be done after the fluid was changed or do the other items have to be done during the change? I’m about to change my fluid/filter and want to make sure I do it right.
Jay I’m having a problem with my m4. I just bought one and it had some damage to the radiator. I replaced it, topped with oil again, then when driving the transmission has been slipping on all even gears 2nd, 4th and 6th… no codes. Tried resetting ecu and transmission and nothing. Only 19k miles
Thank’s for posting this DIY. Especially when showing the RealOEM diagram. As a 6 speed manual F80 guy, my hats off to all the DCT owners for tackling this. I had a BMW dealership do this on our 335i with an AT and paid way too much.

re watching as I am finally doing my swap. This is a really great video. Couple of items for anyone watching: Reason for the short refill is all of the filters are empty and maybe, probably, some passages, oil cooler lines. The software was made for mechanics and not us. You run for a bit check the oil and fill just like we have done for years prior to all the high tech stuff. Brake pedal down works clutch so again you are purging the system. My guess on the temp is that the oil expands a bit with heat and you don't want a short fill. The only interesting portion of the ista part was when it engaged the gears and I wonder if that is not triggered by pressure and internal sensors to determine oil level. Also if you have a 1 series the ECS kit says it is not for your car but if you look up every part in the kit and cross reference it against realoem the parts are supposed to work so more funny business from ECS. Again, thank you for an awesome video!
@@HelpMeDIY Finally did this today. More pointers for anyone doing this. At 15:49 you can use a needle nosed pliers to grab the hub and wiggle it right out if you do not have the correct size blades to get in there. I would also suggest after you get the old filter out, take a moment to see how the filter is held by the cap. Those three forks go around the filter not pushing down. All of the pressure to get the cap back in appears to be the new o ring so make sure you lube the ring as well as the mating surface. I had an issue getting the cap back on and it must of been hung up on one of the three forks. Had to watch this multiple times before it finally sank in. If you press the filter in then the tipping process has to be done just right as pointed out. I tried the filter in the cap and unless you get it perfect it hangs up on the interior barb. At 21:54 where he puts the filter in. Push the bottom of the filter up resulting in the side almost touching the top of the housing inside. This allows you to take the cap, with two of the forks in the 4 and 8 positions and the third at 12. When you add the cap to this fun you can press the cap on bottom first and the two forks will be slightly overlapped with the filter. As you start to push the cap on further you will straight to balance out the force getting the cap to go on straight. I struggled with this for an hour before I got everything to line up. Best of luck, you can do this. Great video
More feedback. Number 4 on the part list is basically and anti drainback valve. It does not seal perfectly as I found out when I replaced mine. If you are doing this service and you want to check the valve you should be careful when removing the pump. It is a 6mm hex but you cant get straight up at it as the plastic pickup that you remove to change the filter makes it a bit tougher. It can be done but you want to be careful not to break any of the edges of the pick up off. If you are replacing that then no worries. When you look at the valve you should see what looks like a ball. It is not round but the bottom half is. The top half has a few ridges and a nipple. The nipple is the spring perch. If you can see any of this, the spring has come off. You can rotate the ball back to its normal position and push it up into the pump/valve. You can feel and hear a slight click which is the spring seating back on the nipple. I purchased a new pump since I was in there and upon looking at the old and new pumps side by side, playing with them for about an hour (OCD) determined that there is no need for replacement if you see the ball out of the proper rotation. $95 part. If anyone reading or doing this needs help feel free to reach out and I will help with what I have found. Bottom line is it is not hard and if you are doing this you might as well check to make sure it is in the correct position.

I thought there was going to be a lot more voodoo involved in this one but it’s pretty much the same as the ZF8HP in a lot of other BMW’s it seems? It got a little confusing when doing the test plan but it kinda looked like it isn’t really all that essential to use ISTA? All it really did was monitor the fluid temp and switch thru the gears if I’m not mistaken? I have ISTA but I’d almost rather just use another scan tool I have to monitor the temp and run it thru the gears myself and just skip all the clicking thru a bunch of pages on a laptop while I’ve got transmission fluid running down my arms and face. I think you just helped out a whole lot of M owners that are really gonna benefit from this in the years to come. I’m curious, how many miles were on that fluid?
+Derek Hanson thank you! Yes I would recommend using ISTA. When I (finally) got to the right step it definitely did something (other than monitoring) that allowed me to get additional fluid in. It would be low if not for ISTA. Now would that hurt the car? I can’t say for sure either way, but the peace of mind is nice 😎
Could you make a video about changing the fuel filter on the F80 / F82? My M4 has 142.000km and I think I could change this filter even if BMW says it‘s "lifetime"
Great video, do the wheels have to be in the air? Will they start rotating as soon as ISTA starts the second phase? Unfortunately I don't have a lift, just a pit.
Hello, thank you for sharing the post, usefull🙂 You mentioned that you bought 7 litres of oil, but the transmission circuit is projected for 8,5 litres (DCT+cooler+pipes). Did you changed all the oil or only the amount in DCT and the rest (1,5 litre) in pipes and cooler you left there? Thanks
@@HelpMeDIY yes I know, but if you dont get away all the old oil then you mix your new 7 litres with 1,5 old litresl and the result is some mixture that is already degraded from the beginning of using. You also bought a differend type of oil than the manufacturer filled there at the beginning. I dont think so that this micture will work well 🙂 What do you think?
@@richardbielicky3603 works perfectly. I assume you don’t disassemble your entire engine and wipe it dry every time you change your engine oil just to get an extra liter to fit? 😁
@@HelpMeDIYof course not, the engine drain plug is on the lowest position so the earth gravity helps to get away almost all the amount of the old oil:-) Usually I drain 6,3 litres and fill 6,5, the mixture of new and old is acceptable. The situation with the DCT is different. The drain plug is in the same heigt as the cooler so the oil from the cooler doesnt flow out automaticaly. If you only chnge the oil in DCT then 6,5 litres is enough, but this is just a part solution. If you want an overal solution then you have to get away the oil from the cooler as well, which means to dissasebly the cooler and pour out the oil or flush the circuit, then you can fill all the 8,5 l 🙂
@@HelpMeDIY that's also true. The oil will definitely be quicker out of the sump and thereby give a heavier jet of oil. But the sloshing is due to the underpressure in the system forcing the air to pass the oil jet. When I empty an oil can I poke a hole opposite the cap so that air can get into the can while pouring. After this, the jug can no longer be used for leak-tight storage. By the way, you make nice videos, I also have an F80 myself and was planning to change the oil even though BMW says not to. Greetings from the Netherlands.
What an excellent tutorial, props to you man! Did you notice any difference in the smoothness in the gearbox afterwards? I have the GTS flash and while it is a LOT better, there's still the audible clunk when going into/out of reverse. Just wondering if this service quietened it all down any?
Great video buddy. So have I got this correct BMW just crack the drain plug open and refill for a standard 40k fluid change but that’s only 5l? And this requires none of the Ista+ bit?
My experience with BMW (in southeast VA) is they do it fast and DO NOT FOLLOW BMW PROCEDURES...i had a differential replaced and had to go back twice to have bplts tightened. I AM NEVER GOING NEAR A DEALERSHIP AGAIN....
+J Z I assume you mean the one on the side for the cylindrical filter? I had to lift the filter up a little and quickly slide that cap back on so the 3 tabs would fit around it and not hit it.
Thank you for this video. I noticed the kit you got no longer contains the Vaico filter and it got poor reviews on fitting....put you did get it to fit without trimming the outer ring on the back side of the filter visible at 21:55. the kit now lists a Meyle filter which does not have the lip/ridge. Any thoughts/
Great video. I bought an M4 and had to replace the transmission cooler. I refilled the transmission fluid and when driving the transmission slips on 2nd, 4th, and 6th only. No codes, I reset ecu and transmission, only 18k miles. My mechanics can’t figure out the problem. I live in El Salvador, can you give me some advice or have you seen this issue before?
@@HelpMeDIY yes. And everything checks out. Im doing an oil flush and new filter, maybe the tube inside filter may be cracked and it’s not sucking oil in. Not sure what to do if this is not the issue

@@HelpMeDIY Well yes. I watched all 40 minutes and also took in your comments on Bimmerpost, Gator. I'm now curious... isn't the end of it after refitting the parts basically a bleeding procedure for the DCT? I mean... 6 liters go in... use ISTA and process the system... adding one more after calibration? Do I have that right? Isn't there a clutch reset that needs to be performed as well? Hello, I’m from Brazil and I have a 2015/16 M3, with 32600km (20200 m) and I went for an oil change, the mechanic recommended me to change the transmission fluid, since this is a 10yo car, can you please give me your opinion, I’m not sure what to do, I know that bmw doesn’t recommend this fluid change cause it’s “lifetime” but we all know it’s simply impossible an lifetime fluid, and if I change this, I may have any consequences due to this “early” changing? Thanks!
Question so the link for the kit comes with the pan for over 500 but Ecs also has another kit without the pan for 300.....do I need to change the pan ?
+will pak I highly recommend replacing the pan for 2 reasons. First, they are prone to warp and crack since they are plastic which will of course cause them to leak. Second, the gasket is integrated into the pan so if you remove it to replace the inner filter, you would have to also reuse the gasket.
I have 23k miles on my 2017 M4. Since I got it used with 7.5 k miles, when cold, the transmission feels like it slips when I backup or go forward for the first time. Afterwards, even If I only drive a 1/2 mile, it then drives normal. Is this the way it should be - because the engine is cold the transmission is programmed to let the engine rev higher? Or is this an indication that the transmission fluid needs changing?
+Mark Kauffman I don’t think it’s slipping, I think that’s the normal operation for a DCT. It’s not the same as an automatic, more similar to a manual clutch that is automated for you so it’s probably the clutch being engaged that you’re feeling. But I also suck at diagnostics that’s just my guess :)
@@HelpMeDIY You had me all happy until I read your last sentence!!! Anyway, thanks for the video (by far the best one I have seen) and the links for the tools. I think I will change mine this summer just for peace of mind.
Seems you went under the car a few extra times. Seems you only need to go under the car one time to refill the extra 2 liter once you start ISTA? (After you get the "Actuator system activated" prompt)?
My car jerks when I’m braking I can feel it a lot when changing from 3-2 gear. I got a transmission fluid change coming up you think that will help it? Just got the brake fluid done recently too.
@@jorge12films it’s the dct software, some have updated their software or gotten the gts flash to help. Mine sorta does it but only from 2-1 depending how i brake
@@HelpMeDIY my bad, washing it as in pumping clean oem oil while draining the “old” one from the gearbox. There are specific machines for such operation, just I wanted to hear some opinions :D
@@HelpMeDIY ops, sorry about it.. I’m reading from workshops that actually are specialized in gearboxes repair and services that in fact in almost every gearbox there’s a lot of leftover “old” oil. So if you drain 3 there s still going to quite a bit old oil left.. that is what “scaring” me. How much did you drain more or less from the dkg someone on bimmerpost says ~3 liters and the dkg according to my readings should have 7?
About to do the same for 135i. Old oil looks decent, wondering how many miles and did you send it to get analyzed? When you replaced the pan, did you replace the bolts too? Thanks

It would be low if not for ISTA. Now would that hurt the car? I can’t say for sure either way, but the peace of mind is nice 😎

Thanks
+@richardbielicky3603 yes the 8.5 liters would be when it’s completely dry. 🍻
@@richardbielicky3603 the oil I used is supposed to mix just fine with the same specs as the oil from the factory
If you remove the filler plug before the drainplug it won't splash as hard in the video.
+Alexander H. Yeah it would probably avoid the glub glubbing 😁

Great video buddy. So have I got this correct BMW just crack the drain plug open and refill for a standard 40k fluid change but that’s only 5l? And this requires none of the Ista+ bit?
+G Bth thanks! If by BMW you mean a dealership, they SHOULD do this whole procedure.
@@HelpMeDIY thanks man. And one last Q, is the Ista programme required for anything other than the sequence restart procedure?
My experience with BMW (in southeast VA) is they do it fast and DO NOT FOLLOW BMW PROCEDURES...i had a differential replaced and had to go back twice to have bplts tightened. I AM NEVER GOING NEAR A DEALERSHIP AGAIN....
Help. I can’t get the oil cap back on. I lubed it. I tried using a clamp to push it back in place and it isn’t evenly fitting back in.
+J Z I assume you mean the one on the side for the cylindrical filter? I had to lift the filter up a little and quickly slide that cap back on so the 3 tabs would fit around it and not hit it.
I’ve never done this procedure, but I wonder if it makes sense to snap the filter onto the cap before installing into the hole?

Hello, I’m from Brazil and I have a 2015/16 M3, with 32600km (20200 m) and I went for an oil change, the mechanic recommended me to change the transmission fluid, since this is a 10yo car, can you please give me your opinion, I’m not sure what to do, I know that bmw doesn’t recommend this fluid change cause it’s “lifetime” but we all know it’s simply impossible an lifetime fluid, and if I change this, I may have any consequences due to this “early” changing? Question so the link for the kit comes with the pan for over 500 but Ecs also has another kit without the pan for 300.....do I need to change the pan ?
+will pak I highly recommend replacing the pan for 2 reasons. First, they are prone to warp and crack since they are plastic which will of course cause them to leak. Second, the gasket is integrated into the pan so if you remove it to replace the inner filter, you would have to also reuse the gasket.
Hey, i'm about to do the dct complete service as well, I'm wondering if it's okay to reuse the oil pan bolts ?
+Larrycoe Rudy I believe I talked about that in the video and reused mine.

+@Madstyle365 because your transmission got too hot? 😝 Sorry I don’t have any experience with that.
