- Lisa the Painfuls ending is often cited as one of the most cruel finales in a videogame. And as you progress through the story it becomes increasingly obvious what it's building up to. Some would argue the entire last scene has been ruined since the game was first released however.
Ever since an apocalyptic event known as The White Flash main character Brad has had to contend with a world that’s not only vapid of plant life and working architecture, but completely devoid of women, while that last one is a big victory for noise pollution it is overall a net negative to humanity for obvious reasons.
After discovering a baby girl in the middle of the wasteland Brad vows to redeem himself, as in his childhood his sister Lisa tragically lost her life at her own hands after suffering years of awful treatment from their father: Marty.
Brad feeling he hadn’t done enough to stand up to his dad's deprived acts decides to place his bets on this baby, who he's named Buddy.

As soul crushingly sad Lisa the painful is it's also one of the many reasons why it's my favorite indie games.
Wasn't expecting Undertale music in a LTP video, and even less that it would actually be pretty fitting knowing how drastically different the two games are from each other.

It would literally be impossible. Even Cheetahs, the probably most inbred species in earth, needed 7 to bounce back. And now all Cheetahs remaining on earth are cousins.

I like undone a lot but it’s a totally different story to what joyful is. Maybe that’s for better or worse, but I would definitely not compare them both outside of the broad strokes. I’d argue undone is more of a Rando / Olathe centered mod given how little Buddy being the last girl drives the plot.
Oh my God... And I thought everyone forgot about this amazing game... I mean, the emotions it gives are amazing. Even the ending... I was crying when Brad was forced to kill his party members... I tried to reach the least painful ending for Brad saving him both arms, choosing for Buddy to hug him in the end... But my efforts were not enough to stop the pain itself. Lisa is all about the pain... And this is what makes this story unique for me... R. I. P. Bradley Armstrong (even though physically he is still alive)... You were the most tragic example of a father figure I have ever witnessed...

I think Austin’s biggest pitfall with this games writing is how buddy seems attached to Marty versus how she sees almost everyone else during joyful. It’s impossible to imagine buddy saying Marty was a better father than Brad ever was even despite all the beer outside the cave showing the contrary, it’s just one vice versus the other, but Brad most likely chooses to continue to try and do good by Buddy.
I don’t get the Marty stuff in painful at all and I feel like it just sits as a blemish on what is otherwise a captivating story. It definitely feels like Austin wanted Brad to be a morally grey character. But when he tries to juxtapose how Buddy saw Brad vs how she saw Marty it feels just wrong. I love this game but that part has always been a sore spot for me.
Maybe I’ve just always been more sympathetic to Brad as a character than most people, but it just feels like sometimes (especially involving Buddy and Brad) it felt like it was hatred upon hatred that seemed very unwarranted in the story that unfortunately follows painful.
I thought it was dumb how sticky presented himself to Brad like he did something to buddy, even though he never did. I guess he’s just provocative? I think Brad is right to be worried to an extent but still
@@bossdoor my guess is unreliable narrator fuckery involving Brad and the slow effects of joy mutation. Since Buddy is much younger than Brad with I would assume the joy wouldn’t take long to have a far more potent effect on her like we see in joyful and all of the visual hallucinations. VS Brad I would argue it’s likely a lot of what he hears or sees from people could be effects of the Joy taking over. Brad still has hallucinations involving Joy but they’re all tied to Lisa and his trauma, so Buddy and Sticky saying things to allude to Buddy’s rape by sticky could possibly be chalked up to Brads mind simply assuming the worst or making things up based on what he KNOWS happened to Lisa, and what he fears could happen to Buddy. He doesn’t want to fail to protect Lisa again, it’s something I think definitive editions secret final boss demonstrates wonderfully and it’s one of the few genuine improvements to the games
The Marty stuff works in painful. It’s just that joyful makes it worse by how it characterizes buddy.
Well, that's because Marty, like Brad, is a man who's attempting to make up for the wrongs he did in the past. Marty's not over his addictions much like Brad, so bottles are expected. but the cave scene made clear that she didn't even know what joy was thanks to her closed-off lifestyle, and Marty even tells her not to take them while Brad asks for her to look away when confronted with it.
Buddy's also likely going through puberty around the time that the events in the game are taking place so unstable emotions are commonplace.

Tbf I really wonder about the post credit scene at the end with brad cause it just shows him strolling up to buddy I assume maybe the developer put it in their with the dlc in mind; but without it your left thinking a joy mutant brad is getting close to a sleeping buddy who has a sword and idk it just leaves to many questions in my mind. Like I get the dlc wasn’t the best and I feel it would have done better as a full game instead of a dlc but at least it doesn’t leave on such and ambiguous cliff hanger. Or maybe this game has made me crazy who knows
Honestly I like Joyful overall (pre definitive edition)
But it is kinda funny how Austin managed to fail at making Joyful better than Painful twice.
But I will admit I think I like Joyfuls “potential” more than the substance the warlords are interesting and could’ve gotten more screen time and Rando is my favorite character period.
If only someone respected in the fandom made a fangame that elaborates on Joyful

Loved the video, but i think there's one thing that would make it better.
When you've put "Undertale" over the fight where Brad massacres Rando's army, the song should've progressively gotten more distorted and eerie, to symbolize that Brad is losing his last bits of humanity, his precious memories are being twisted into animalistic instincts and desire to kill, and he's quickly stepping towards his doom.
This would've made the scene hit much harder.
The funny references don’t work if you do them too often

First of all, just wanted to say thank you for remembering me, Boss Door. It means a lot. Your editing is very well-done and your humor combined with your monotone voice makes for a fabulous watch! Now, I'm about to criticize Lisa the Painful heavily as I have discovered that I don't like this game very much, but this is in no way criticism directed towards you. I think you're a very good creator! I just don't like the game and have decided to add to the conversation, even though no one asked.
1. Brad's dad and Buddy's relationship...is not great. She's just a kid, sure, but why would she say that Marty did a better job taking care of her than Brad ever did? He [Marty] CLEARLY didn't do a great job, what with the blue Joy pills, the alcohol, the cave, and whatnot. Maybe she just said that to hurt him, but that's unnecessarily cruel.
2. How did Brad completely annihilate his father and the army? Is he magic?? Did the Joy mutate him? Or just "video game logic"?
3. Trans erasure. The apocalypse wiped out all flora/fawna and women, right? But trans MEN exist. Testosterone is not a form of birth control (although some trans men cannot/don't wanna go on T, and that's fine, too) (continued in reply to this comment)
-And if the logic is that they were wiped out, too, then that's bullshit. Plus intersex people exist as well. (3)
4. Who are we cheering for? Brad means well, but like you said, his methods are barbaric. Buddy's just a kid in a fucked-up world with very little hope. And humanity...absolutely does not deserve to be redeemed or repopulated at ALL. Are we just an omnipotent character watching a tragedy where no one wins? Because the latter is the only "good" option, and those kind of stories are too dark and drawn-out FOR MY TASTES.
Anyway, that's my take on Lisa the Painful. These are just my personal opinions and yours may be different from mine. Can't wait to see more content from you (ESPECIALLY In Stars and Time

That's LITERALLY the sfx that played during the cutscene, like it plays a monkey noise during salvation blacks intro, like it's followed up with "No Race Jokes please"
You need an editor for your scripts, unless you're misreading the correct words. "Vapid" is straight up incorrect in the context given, and I'm sure you mean "depraved" instead of "deprived."
